914World.com _ 914World Garage _ WCR 2013 The Dalles, OR - Shilo Inn

Posted by: Mikey914 Nov 12 2012, 11:39 PM

I negotiated a group rate and have 15 rooms set up to start, The rate will be $99 a night, it's not a Motel 6, but not the W, but a good older hotel that will have a parking lot for us to "meet" in and they're ok with us BBQ'n in the parking lot.

There's not a lot of choice in that area that will meet our needs. This should meet our needs nicely.

I'll have the group code for the rate in a few days.

2 Queens or King room. Not a ton of savings but $10-$20 a night less.

I was thinking the same thing. Now that it seems I can get by with a refurb, and not a restore, June seems about right.

Also...The Dalles Oregon is a nice drive from Moscow Idaho.

Posted by: JimN73 Nov 21 2012, 10:07 AM

My wife has found that the Shiloh Inn has a VETERANS rate, it's only $89. Look for a dropdown in the rate area.

That savings pays for my gas.

About 45min down the gorge.

I spoke with BKLA yesterday and we may at least be able to get a parade lap at the Oregon Raceway, and I'm trying to put together a lunch as part of the experience there. Track time looks like it may not happen, but it's just a matter of $$$.

The vetrans rate and the AAA rate may be better as it looks like $99 a night + tax is the best I can get. They will set aside a back parking lot for us and we can have a BBQ out there. We can also run a few clinics. I was thinking about doing an Acrylic polishing one, and maybe aluminum polishing. If we can get a few others that want to step up I hope to have a 2-2-1/2 hour block of instructional how to's each could be about 30 min with a 10min space between to facilitate transition.
More to come

first.gif

Proposed Bay Area caravan route:

- Leaving Wednesday, June 12th

- Driving up 101 north along the coast to Bandon, OR and stay overnight. Estimated driving time: 9 hours.

- There's a nice motel at the beach in Bandon that we stayed at on our way to the WCR in Seattle.

- Leave Bandon early on Thursday morning, continue north on 101 and cut over to Portland using 18.

- Pass through Portland and drive east on 30 to The Dalles. Estimated driving time: 7:30 hours.

- Going back home is either the reverse (preferred) or if we're in a hurry, we can just take 5 all the way down.

Good idea. I'll go a week early, check into the hotel, give myself an award for best driving lights, do the fun run driving.gif and then be home the next week for my Sons wedding. The wedding might not happen anyway. He proposed at the top of Mt. Whitney. That's 14,000 feet. I told him he was probably hypoxic when he proposed, so he could probably get out of it OK. happy11.gif lol-2.gif

And the fact we are not a legal entity makes insurance more difficult. If we can piggy back on with another group then the cost is much more reasonable. We were looking at having to cover about $6k for a day, and the math is not there.

Posted by: ConeDodger Nov 21 2012, 01:39 PM

Ok, I've got to figure out how to embed the map. I probably have the most fun route I can imagine, though running up the coast sounds incredible. My route is 10 hours and some change and goes through mountains all the way. I think a night in Klamath Falls to split it up but it looks like the drive of a lifetime... driving.gif

I am trying to tie us with another organization that may use that weekend. If a group will do that for us, track day would be around $250/day.

Also, Here is a proposed road trip that takes about 2 hrs. Detour to ORP at lunch for a parade lap & BBQ/Lunch at the FinnSport garage.

My wife will be there too. She may need some distraction as well. Talk her into organizing a Women's event day. If she plans it, they will come...

Posted by: BKLA Nov 22 2012, 11:46 AM

There are a great number of local attractions, museums and events in the gorge area. Significant others who are not interested in car related functions will have plenty of things to do and explore.

Here are a couple of links:

http://www.historicthedalles.org/

http://www.el.com/to/thedalles/

I created a list of a number of other interests and will provide that info (and more) as we get closer to the event.

I strongly suggest that the route back to The Dalles from Maryhill be via Goldendale and 142 to Lyle. There is a section along 142 in the canyon that doesn't have a center stripe. It is two-way, but you can use the whole thing as long as there is no opposing traffic.

Back ion the 80s we took the 75 914 to Seattle, up I5 and back down the coast. We planned a 5 day trip back, going over to Long Beach and then South. Took 4 days to get to Eureka, CA. There were enough RVs, moving road blocks and reasons to stop on the highway to keep our average speed down to under 40 mph.

Beautiful tri and we'll do it again if we have more time.

Yes you can book the rooms no problem They have set aside 15 rooms at this time.
Contact the hotel Directly We will have a parking lot in the back there should be enough room for the trailer or two.

Let him know you want the 914world rate of $99 a night. Should be the same as the AAA rate.

If not, I'll bring the MH and find a RV park nearby. If no wife and no Pugs, then no problem.....I'll drive the 914 on her own.

I have not checked, but a call tomorrow would answer the question. I too have a pug that I'm sure my wife would love to bring. I have the day job tomorrow, would you mind checking and posting back.
Thanks,

I believe that it is the ORP club and they stepped up and committed to that weekend knowing that we had reserved rooms in the gorge.

OK Ive gotta make it.
So Drew (or whomever) what about the RV thing?

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 9 2013, 12:34 AM

We have room for the cars in the back. I think I could pursuade mamagement that we have hirred security to watch the cars so we could sneak in 1 RV, but I'm pretty sure we would have a problem with more.

Hey Mark, I'll be towing up and will park my trailer in the back. Hey Mike Bellis are you trailering your car up? And what day are you leaving? I'll be leaving wensday morning about 11:00 am. I have to do my Dailysis first then I can leave, will be hitch up and ready to go. If you want to follow let me know, going up US-5, I know boring but going to go as fast as I can in comfort. eric, a 300 mile shake down run prob isn't such a good idea. 300 or less before you set out to work out any bugs might save you major hassles. by the time you get home it'll be over 1000. seen it a few times...radiator failure on a v-8 conv, shift bushing go kaput, wheel bearing adj, cables...

...not that you need any help, but here is a link to some videos on the track. The cool thing about ORP is we can run it both directions... I prefer CW in a car because its more challenging (blind apexes, off camber exits, etc.) but it is not for novices IMHO. Ive done CCW on a bike and felt more comfortable as to apexes and visual clarity, so we could do CCW the first few sessions to get people comfortable and then go CW if people want.

Either direction is a blast to drive and will challenge even TC, should he join us from the far south biggrin.gif

They gave us a discounted rate so asking for the group rate caused confusion with the woman I spoke with. After giving them the dates she saw the discounted price and then took my reservation.

Linda & I will likely be there and make it part of a vacation. We love the area and we had such a great time at Medford that it will be great to go back to Oregon. Unfortunately, I'll be sans-914. The 2 trips we've made with the Eurovan Camper towing the 914 have resulted in radiator fan failures while crossing Nevada. We're just not going to take the chance anymore on towing.

Well Mr. C,
I'm guessing you probably would get the best of baby and me at AX...Since she is bone stock. I've thought about doing some serious AX, but just can't see tearing up a good original 73' 2.0 survivor. I think her destiny is to take some fun runs in the Washington, Idaho, and Montana mountains. We have some incredible scenic switchbacks in this area that are just CRYING out for 914s to give them a try.

I wouldn't mind putting putting in a few laps at the track though...just to have a legal place to get her up to 100 MPH, and then throw her into some turns. That would be some serious fun. I see your a PNW guy, so maybe I'll get to meet you at the WCR if my refurbish goes as planned.

Posted by: kg6dxn Jan 21 2013, 12:44 PM

Looks like I'm out sad.gif

My nephew is in a program for at risk youth sponsored by the California National Guard. I (ex-Marine) am his mentor. He graduates on June 14 @10am in San Luis Obispo. Smack dab in the middle of WCR. As much as I want to be there, family comes first.

I have considered all options but it doesn't make sense to race on Friday afternoon to Oregon just to make the end of WCR. There are no airports (with a flight) within 1.5 hours of each location. hissyfit.gif

I am cancelling my reservation in OR and booking one in SLO. My new goal is to have the car running for a trip to SLO. Then a nice ride up the coast with my wife.

See you guys next year! beerchug.gif

The idea would be to have the doc help assemble a few transmissions over the course of a few days. It would require dissassembly cand cleaning prior. The doc would work with those that wanted to do this prior via the internet, and could assess the required parts prior to the even to bring along. So basically just assembly would occur at the event.
Thoughts?

Track day info:

ORP has graciously added the WCR weekend to the ORP club schedule. All three days (Friday - Sunday) are available to those who want lots of track time.

Single Track day cost (including catered lunch) $400.00

The attached pdf explains more regarding the cost. If you are "local" and plan to do more track days, part of the fee can be credited to your membership and the cost of each subsequent day goes down.

Further, as the sponsoring member of the ORP Club, I am credited an amount for every person who joins. If you join, I will have that amount additionally credited to your account (rather than mine) to help defray some the of the cost of membership.

Again, if you are local (seattle, PDX, Etc.) and want access to lots o' track days, this is a great way to get track days!

For the sunday trip out to ORP - (Planning lunch and possibly a parade lap and a photo op on the front straight.)

Here's the route that I suggested to Mark & Jamie. I have driven most of this (not from ORP to Dufur, yet biggrin.gif) lots of twisties and great scenery.

Mark & I need to firm things up regarding the Lunch - but I'm sure we can do the parade lap!

If you have a debit or credit card you can pay without having a Paypal account.

I could post a secure link here that would work, but want an admin's approval first (or I can PM it to an admin if they want it).

I've got Mike on getting these posters together and we'll be sending these out to a few local shops and dealers to help pump the effort. We have registered the website WCR2013.info that I need to build and poster will reference the site. I want to pump the event for the VW and Porsce community to maybe draw in a few new members.
A little cross promotion will not hurt.

More to follow-

I will be there driving my jeep and towing my BBQ pit (the same one that was at WCR 2011 in Medford, Oregon) Unless we don't need it?

Attached Image

I will also be bringing a few things to give away from this place! The owner donated Three (3) cases of beer (22oz bottles) and some beer glasses! (just like in Medford)

Attached Image

Bare Island Blonde Ale

Named for the scrappy Bare Island in the middle of Upper Klamath Lake, this blonde ale is sure to please any hard worker. It has the strength of a microbrew, yet stays on the lighter side. Its crisp flavor, a characteristic of a Vanguard Hops ale, is smooth and refreshing after a long day on the job. So kick back, relax and enjoy. This beer choice will hold up for the long run. Available in 22 oz. bottles or draft. (2011 Award Winner)

4.3% ABV 20 IBU’S

Attached Image

Glasses from the Brewery

Attached Image

Crystal Springs IPA

Like the sparkling and impressive Crystal Springs we find in the Klamath Basin, this ale steps away from the crowd, to a place where clarity comes naturally. Our India Pale ale is rich with complexity but the taste is simply awesome. Citrus and pine hop flavors dominate the aroma of this Northwest India Pale Ale while allowing malt flavors to linger in the background. Indulge yourself; you won’t be disappointed. Available in 22 oz. bottles or draft.

(7.1 % ABV 70 IBU’S) 2012 Award Winner
Attached Image

Drop Dead Red

Inspired by the gorgeous redhead whose temper was as reknown as her beauty… or so the story goes. This palette pleasing ale will appeal to your sultry side. Its flavors find a balance between toasty and nutty, while the roasted malts impart the deep red hue. Available in 22 oz. bottles or draft.

(5.9% ABV 52 IBU’S) 2011 Award Winner
Attached Image

Vanilla Porter

Vanilla dominates the flavor of this robust porter while chocolate and coffee flavors linger in the background. Brewed with a blend of vanilla beans, this delicious porter is sure to please even the most discerning beer connoisseur. You don’t need an excuse like pouring rain or drifting snow to come inside for this porter. Simply take a taste, and you’ll find yourself enjoying one of life’s finer creations, regardless of what mother nature hands you. Available in 22 oz. bottles or draft.

(6.7% ABV 40 IBU’s) 2012 Award Winner

I have a hard time believing that Shilo Inn doesn't have some kind of redundancy in there IT. It would be really bad for business to lose reservations.

With that said - I will check my confirmation # at their website.

WCR 2013 The Dalles, OR - Shilo Inn, June 13th- 16th

Nice work!

Unfortunatly this was the first attempt at making patches and had a problem with getting all the colors to line up correctly, so they won't be there. headbang.gif But the good news is you can buy these on evil-bay from Thailand for 5 bucks all day. chair.gif The other good news is my cuz spent the extra free time making something really cool for the poker run / raffle prize, KMA.gif and the winner will promptly be beaten or stabbed or shot by all the jealous loosers that didn't get it. It is being (mostly) hand-made right here in Oregon. (sorry no pics, it is a suprise) evilgrin.gif

There is a good local event happening this Sat. The flyer below gives you the info. Sat may be a track day. But for any that want to cruise in the area, this would be fun, and the local car guys would love it.

Hope to see you there,

Stephen

I'd be down for that! Since I'm heading back home through Portland on Saturday afternoon, that would be a welcome pit stop!

Posted by: jsconst Jun 9 2013, 10:41 PM

Looks like I'm not going to make it, too many things getting in the way.
Decided to stay home and put the time and $ into my shop.
Maybe next year....at Least I get an expensive T shirt.

Have fun,
Jeff

on the way home monday i may stop at carson hotsprings (hotel st martin) in carson for a HOT! geothermal water soak in a 6ft tub. when you're done with the soak, about as long as you want if there's no one else waiting for a tub, you lay on a comfy cot while wrapped in a sheet and blanket with only your face exposed. while soaking you drink the hot eggy tasting water. you sweat like crazy. shower up and you feel like a new man. your crap stench for the next 2 days is unbelievable but your digestive tract is well cleaned. you up for a try jim?

Good question I made the call, Heather is the manager, just check in with her and let he know that you'll be keeping an eye on the cars at night and that you'll be there. If she has any problems (or you do) call me.
