You cut gas burners? Careful welding them. They're magnesium.
Yeah, but better safe than sorry. And I have no idea who he is, or what skills he has. So would you expect me to assume otherwise??
Looks good Jeff , I've still gotta get you to do this(ish) to my Enkeis!!
If you're serious, it's pretty cool...thank goodness they shouldn't fit with my boxster brakes, fheww.
BTW still trying to convince my wife a set would look good on my SC
Keep up fella's!
1st example is the real deal.
2nd example is the repro wheel cut & widened.
Very nice
$99 clip1 aluminum. left wheel pieces from Bovy 4lug mahles .
So the outer lip is real mahle aluminum.
I have welded my share of mag cases and transmissiom housing..
I wouldnt weld a magnesium wheel.
I did sleep at a Holiday Inn, Once. And Mike Wills showed me his really bitchin tool kit Once.
Very Close after and before cip1 repops

Troy has a fascination with balls. But he is right......... We aren't talking shit here, these are the real deal.
Nice work.
I think I wants some...!
Wheels that is not Ball's
this should be Woodys theme song!
You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain
Too much love drives a man insane
You broke my will, oh what a thrill
Goodness gracious great balls of fire
if you look through hotvws magazine ads at safeway there are TONS of swell repros available these day. 5 lug, 4 lug, old school. priced right. exspensive OEM units and a refinish or a new repros and an all new suspension?
jeff, do you have to heat treat the wheels after the sectioning and weld up?
k
Them rain city rednecks got some serious skills!! Nice work Jeff!!
Tom
So is that wheel a widened replica, a widened original wheel or a replica that can be ordered in the extra wide width? Just trying to plan for the future as I know I want a set of gas burners for my six but it would be nice to get something a little wider than the stock 5.5" wheel as my 2nd set of wheels for the car. I already have a number matching set of deep sixes from '71 that may be going to Harvey after the first of the year
They are the Repops, I cut and widened 1 inch to 6.5.
Wow!
How much does the widened wheel weigh?
But Looks Fabulous
Attached image(s)
powder coat or paint? wurth?
k
Does look very nice. Do you have a weight? What did it or would it cost to have a set of reproductions widened?
The wheels are 89.95 at cip1 VW parts, they weigh in at 18lbs.
Lets see ??
sand blast
doner backs
machining for match
welding
maching
hand work corners
sand blast agian
paint or powder coat
about $400 labour each for these.
5 lug Fuchs about half...way easier.
Not a Quote, just a guesstimate. I did them for myself.
The tire in the pics is a 205/55x15 ES 100

they do 7x17 fuchs for cheep, Probably a matter of tmie for this size too..REMEBER You Saw it here first....
Great looking wheels! Your talents are even more impressive in making these.
Are they painted or powder coated? What is the color?
The donor for these was the rim pieces I cut from making jon bovy's 4 lug mahles using prmade DOT approved barrels, The paint is duplicolor silver wheel piant.
I was anxious to get one on a 914.

Just a beautiful wheel on the 914. Thanks for sharing.
Make some 9's...
No ,,I have the 9's I made for you that I am stuck with..
What... Ever...
Bright Like a Diamond
I hate Mahles at the moment, way to much work...Next to pick a color I dont really want the bright silver like the first one...
3+1 =4......do I need I a spare ??
Attached image(s)
yes!!
3" wide with a skinny spare temptire on it!
super light
color of choice
Attached image(s)
Nice!
purdy...will yours be used with lug bolts or studded hubs and nuts? i was thumbing thru HOTVW the other day and looked at the CIP1 ad. do you know if the backspacing for the 15x5.5 5 lug fuch repros is about the same as OEM? i have the 911 front suspension i picked up at walker's. conv on the cheap with the CIP1 repros. well, sort of on the cheap.
edit: looked it up. 4.5" bs and $79.95 per+shp. 15x5.5, black with polished spokes. that's about the same fitment as 4 lug oem fuch wheels.
k
quick look on irish green.
Attached image(s)
Love the work on the wheel & making it wider. I wouldn't say I am a fan of that color with your Irish Green. I'd like it in closer tot he stock silver. Or posible black with some polished or silver lips. Kick ass wheel either way
Yeah, with the Irish Green that color is too dark (IMHO) and the polished center cap does not go well. Huge fan of the wheels though! I know I will have to have a set of gas burners for my Six at some point when it is done. Gas Burners are possibly the best looking wheel you can put on a Six.
It would look a lot nicer if that tire was clean.
its cold
its cold I agree its a quicky..

Now that you've done this. What's your opinion on widening and changing the backspacing to fit under and fill out GT flares ?
Interesting. I posted a message (should have read them all first) and attempted to delete it. Is there no way for the author to delete their message?
nope your stuck in this thread.
Scotty the back spacing is good just would need to add wider lips to the face, these are alot of work though , the weld ends up between the spokes, I machined them out and then a bunch of blending.
I found this picture of the back of Jeff's garage in Paul and TC's thread in the Sandbox... Jeff has the world's supply of Gas Burners all crated up!

Adding to the inside is pretty simple, These Guys are close to you and have been doing it quite a while.

That is just a perfect wheel.
Looks better with silver nuts doesn't it. When does production start?
Mahle BLUE
Gint, I will make R offset 7's no problem.
BTW This is the RRC2013 914 project..
Too bad I'm the only one in my family that likes gasburners...I'd love a set for the 914 and for the 356.
