914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Console Gauges

What gauges are available in the larger size for the console? I am seeing 2 1/16" gauges for sale but don't want that.

I am looking for an oil temp and oil pressure in the larger size. Are they available or made? What gauges were made in the larger size?

I want to relocate the gauges to the dash in place of the heater controls and radio and get rid of the current console.

Factory console had a clock , Temp gauge and a volt gauge in the large size and this would be the only thing available. I have extra's of these if you can use them. All VDO gauges with the exception of the listed ones are 2-1/16 dia. You cam see what is available by going on e-bay and searching vdo gauges. I have seen ring adapters that mount 2-1/16 gauges in the large hole console.

I wonder what possessed Porsche/VW to use such a unique size for these gauges in the first place?

Using the adapter rings would certainly be the easiest, though you could always replace the face plate with one that has the desired mounting holes easily enough.

I plan on making a custom panel across the dash to replace the heater controls and radio openings. The smaller gauges fit a little better.

I have a clock and a volt meter in the larger size and wanted to add oil temp and pressure and have 4 or 5 gauges across.

It looks like I maybe be better off getting all smaller ones; more available. I don't have the senders either. I sort of want oil pressure.

Anyone seen anything like this done? but not in a race car?

There is a pre made plate made to replace the radio dash plate that allows you to place 2 or 3 gauges in that area. You can also mount two gauges in the area of the ash tray by using the VDO adapter or the metal one available.

I seem to remember that they are made by Rennmetal.

There are many 60mm gauges available but not VDO.

From whom? How do prices/looks compare? Senders too? I would think VDO selection is the cheapest way to go.

Factory Console gauges were VDO 60mm. New Aftermarket VDO are 52mm. The best part though is that you CAN find some of the old gauges from the 70's to mid 80's that are
60mm. You can use the guts to put them in the factory console housings for the factory look.

I think I am going to stick with the 52mm size VDO gauges. I like the look and the size. Here is what I am thinking:
