914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Rainbow Bright - What's your favorite - and least favorite - 914 colours?

Posted by: tumamilhem Dec 8 2012, 03:31 PM

Let's face it. Only in the 70's would a car come in so many wacky, crazy outrageous colors! The 914 was BY FAR no exception. Which are your favorite and least favorite of the 914 rainbow? The 914 came in 37 DIFFERENT COLORS (Actually 40, but 3 were the same color later renamed)! With as many as 14 OPTIONS A YEAR! I can’t think of ANY car that came in so many color selections! And let's face it - part of the appearance appeal of the 914 was the fact that it came in some really wacky colors. Having a 914 in a "normal" color almost just doesn't fit. For such a funky looking car, it's got to have a funky looking color!

With such an extensive variety of color selections, most of which you won’t find even remotely close to nowadays, which colors are your favorites - and least favorites? Post some good pics of 914s in your favorite colors - especially if it's yours! first.gif

There are a handful of colors that came on the 914 that I think are really cool. I can’t pick just one, so here are my absolute favorites and least favorites:

FAVORITES:
- Anacona Blue Metallic - Probably my favorite color on the 914. I think it’s a GORGEOUS color for the car. Nicely sets off all the lights, and great contrast with the chrome and black trim.
- Signal Orange - Too obvious? Well, there’s an obvious reason why! BAD-ASS!
- Signal Yellow - FRESH!
- Saturn Yellow / Chrome Yellow - Bright and SUNNY!
- Adriatic Blue - Rich blue with nice contrast to the black trim.
- Gemini Blue Metallic - Frosty blue with a nice hue.
- Scarlet Red - Maybe I’m a bit biased because I have a ‘75 in Scarlet Red, but if you’re going to go red, go RED!
- Creamsicle - Okay, I’ll be honest. I wasn’t nuts over Light Ivory, which I guess is probably one of the most popular colors for a 914. It’s nice, but I prefer a bold color on the 914. I always thought white was just too plain for such a car. Oddly enough, I’m a huge white fan and wear a LOT of white (head to toe) and I absolutely LOVE the factory white leatherette interior on a 914! My Scarlet Red ‘75 came in the rare white interior. Unfortunately the previous owner stupidly had it dyed black. However, now that I am the owner of an LE Creamsicle, I’m adjusting to the Light Ivory. Especially with the Phoenix Red accents setting it off, making it even more funky. So my taste for the Light Ivory has become more appealing.

LEAST FAVORITES:
- Red Metallic - Not a fan. If you’re going to go red, don’t half-ass it. Just doesn’t stand out enough.
- Olympic Blue - Nice color, but too weak for the 914. Don’t like the way it sets off the orange day running lights and side markers either. Go bolder if going blue. If you prefer a lighter blue, then make it Laguna Blue.
- Willow Green - AKA Projectile Green.
- Berber Yellow - AKA Projectile Yellow
- Copper Metallic - Eh.
- Black - I know a very popular color for the 914, but I don’t think black really appeals to the fun, funky and odd shape, lines and personality of the 914. It’s too serious of a color for it. I also think black hides a lot of the curves and lines of the car. No bueno.

Semigloss black. The bigger the engine, the less gloss.

Black, white, tangerine, delphi, gold and aubergine.

Posted by: tumamilhem Dec 8 2012, 03:39 PM

No, I mean aubergine, as in purple. swood's old car with polished fuchs looked killer. I'll have to see if I can find a pic. It's been a lot of years if memory serves me.

I thought my conservative engineer Dad was nuts to have paid an extra$209 for a custom color Delphi Green in 1973, and Mom immediately named it "urine yellow!" But now I've developed an appreciation that other drivers have a much better ability to see little ol' me in roads choked with big SUV's these days! driving.gif aktion035.gif

There was a guy in these parts that was trying to sell a super low mileage Berber Yellow '75 2.0. The price was way too high, but I thought one of the main problems with the car was the unappealing color.

Posted by: Bullethead Dec 9 2012, 11:15 PM

agree.gif I love Ravenna, it's so subtle. Once owned a '68 911R vintage racer in much less subtle Viper... another love or hate color.

But then I like Sahara Beige and Sepia. Favorite shades for the 914 include Tangerine, Safety Orange, Aubergine, Silver, Black, Alaska and Ancona Blue Metallic.

My 914s are Tangerine and Safety Orange, our three early 911s are two Light Ivory Targas plus a Black '67S, though it was originally Slate Gray. Coolest color in our
garage is on a 356S hotrod I've owned a long time: Smyrna. It was white when I got it, but couldn't wait to make it right. Porsche offered great colors back then.

I agree with you. Can you imagine walking on the lot and seeing the same car in 15 different colors? Imagine that today! Now everything is white, black, silver, gray, beige, maybe red and maybe blue if you're lucky. Especially on the 914 (I think since it was intended for a younger audience) it just came in such an assortment of great colors. Colors even came in multiple shades (several blues, greens, yellows, reds, etc.). Just makes them even more interesting and unique. Never boring.

Irish Green FTW!

Posted by: Madswede Dec 10 2012, 06:03 PM

Me answering this thread is a bit like a deaf person answering a poll on favorite bands/musicians (I'm famously color-deficient ... Ok, "color-blind") BUT that fact notwithstanding, the only colors I really don't like on a 914 are the metallic ones, especially copper and gold. Favorites are the reds/oranges. Too many black cars, but I think black 914s can look really meeeeeeean!

Posted by: iamchappy Dec 10 2012, 06:31 PM

Anything but RED, except Phoenix Red which is really orange....not a big fan of yellow either except Signal Yellow which is totally awesome.

Like White, Black, the Blues, Oranges, Silver, light gold, Greens And LOVE Ravenna

Favorites are Tangerine and Ravenna. Mine is Tangerine, and will be repainted Tangerine when it's done.

Nepal Orange is nice too. Willow Green. Conda green. Malaga Red. Aubergine.

For WCR 2008 in Issaquah the local paper ran a story and said that 914s came in colors like jellybeans. I thought that was an appropriate analogy.

I know it's like saying your kid is the cutest in the class, but is there really any color better looking than Phoenix Red? I'm sure I'm biased, but I've always thought it was the best color on the road. Bold and flashy without being gaudy.

I also like silver, The Ice Blue Metallic looks awesome, Laguna blue, and Ivory.

I like every 914, but with that said...Ravenna Green and Delphi green are pretty bad. Both look like they came out of a diaper.

And all of the LE models look like they were designed by a 7 year old. Really...Bumblebee, and Creamcicle? What a shame for those of us that might want a LE.

I interpreted Bullethead's comment to mean the 914 furthest from the camera, which does look similar to Berber Yellow. But the non-BUB bumpers would imply a color other than Berber, probably Ravenna Green.

Regarding the car in the front, I don't think that is Willow Green. Actually, it doesn't look like a standard 914 color. The car below is Willow Green for sure:

And this one, which I believe is the AA 914-6, is supposed to be Willow Green as well:

Black is one of my least favorite colors on a 914 (for all the reasons I mentioned in the very first comment of the thread). I know it's really popular, but I think it hides a lof of the curves and angles on the car. Plus, it just doesn't seem to look as good as all those crazy, bright colors it came in - almost 40! I think black mutes the personality of the car too much. It's more fun than that. That's just my taste though.

Color Psychology

Black is the color of authority and power.

Brides wear white to symbolize innocence and purity.

The most emotionally intense color, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing.

The color of the sky and the ocean, blue is one of the most popular colors.

Green symbolizes nature. It is the easiest color on the eye and can improve vision. It is a calming, refreshing color.

Cheerful sunny yellow is an attention getter. While it is considered an optimistic color, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms, and babies will cry more. It is the most difficult color for the eye to take in, so it can be overpowering if overused. Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.
