914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Am I doing this correctly? Checking end play

Posted by: tornik550 Dec 18 2012, 07:22 PM

Just want to double check that I am doing this correctly. I am checking my end play. The engine is assembled. I put a magnetic dial indicator mount on my flywheel and placed the point of the indicator on a parallel flange on the case. I then pulled the flywheel away from the case and took a measurement. Then pushed the flywheel into the case as much as possible and took a measurement. The difference between the two measurements is the end play. Mine was .005.

Does my technique sound correct? Am I missing anything? Is .005 acceptable?

Thanks.

I bolt mine to the case and measure the flywheel.
The acceptable range is .003 to .005 with a wear limit of .006, I always aim for .003 while taking care not to be less than that figure.

I went outside and decided to recheck my work. I got the same numbers -.005. I then turned the flywheel about 1/8 turn and rechecked- I then got .007- WTF!!!

Obviously I am doing something wrong. Which number do I use?
