914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Early Gas Tank Cap

Posted by: 7TPorsh Dec 22 2012, 02:54 PM

Now I have a round old metal cap with vw on it.

What was stock on these cars? I want to get a new cap; preferably on with a Porsche crest. biggrin.gif

I look on ebay and see nothing. Is a 911 cap the same?

Looks like this: really $100 on ebay??

This is the stock early (1970-74) filler cap. It has patina! They were not produced with a crest. Vintage! and only $5 + shipping! Let me know if interested...

You can buy them new at all vw parts dealers.
They are very cheap.

The later caps do not have the VW logo. VW Thing used the same cap as the 914.

I have a nice VW cap on my Thingy. I have a couple of extras, I can add a Porsche emblem to it for the look you want.

Sorry for the blurry pics. The first one is a sticker. The second is a Porsche badge.

How do you uncrimp the cap to disassemble the internal rubber seals before sending to the platers .

Yes caps with Porsche on these; this is what I was thinking. But in the meantime I ordered this:

The caps that I have are not chrome plated, although they look like it. They are hand polished to a very high shine.

A great idea for a very nice looking cap.

This is nice...with an emblem?

As I look at the pics here. It's hard to tell the sizeof the 914 cap. It looks smaller. Listing say 70mm.

The capp I need is like the one in the pic with the ruler...it's big. Are these different sizes? I have the collar around the tank top but not expansion tank.

This is what I'm using for a gas cap. This is polished stainless steel

So is early different from later? It looks like my cap is the larger; like a Ghia or Thing caps I see on ebay? All listed at 60mm, 70mm, even 100mm.

The pics here show both types. Mine caps the whole top of the collar hole around the tank fill hole...which is a smaller hole.

I'll try and post a pic.
