914World.com _ 914World Garage _ *****Warning***** Where there is smoke.......

Posted by: wndsnd Dec 31 2012, 12:37 PM

After doing business over a year with members and vendors listed in the Classifieds, and having nothing but good experience with all, and getting my car restored with everyone's help from this and other forums with great fun, I think I have a problem.

There is a member that has been posting in the Classifieds of all the 914 forums, almost daily, with sometimes many posts a day. This member is out of PA.

He responded to my post WTB a running engine with a 1.7. I was in his area on a business trip and called to take a look. We shood hands. We made a deal and I paid him with a check in full. That was before Thanksgiving. The deal was to deliver to my door in MA.

To date, no engine, but many excuses. Now I realize we are dealing with a holiday period. But, I have heard so many stories, and also have had more requests for money for aditional parts I was interested in. I have taken many days off waiting for this engine to arrive on dates scheduled. Yesterday it was to be here by noon, at 5:00 pm I called and was told his driver was 1-2 hours out. Never arrived. Now this guy has gone underground on me.

Before I take this to the next level, I am looking to see if it's just a bad deal for him promising delivery he can't make. OR, if others are getting duped. Please PM me.

Thanks.

BTW, if this is a legitimate guy that thinks he made a bad deal, I would think he would just man up and pay a shipper to get it done.

I gave him $500.00, of which $150 was to pay for getting it to me for a (trusting this) running 1.7.

I hope this works out for you. If the seller doesn't come through quickly, please let us know!

How would anyone be able to answer that question for you if you don't tell us his name?

I will expose him, but I was hoping that there still might be some underlieing problem that I don't know about.

I did give you hints (PA, Multiple Posts, Running 1.7)

But I am trying to take this one step at a time, that is why I requested PM's

Posted by: Black22 Dec 31 2012, 01:16 PM

As much as I want a part, I look to see the post count and Member status. I know who it is you're talking about and I personally would have had reservations about handing over payment in advance to a 0 post "Lurker".

Hope you get the engine soon. smile.gif

Well you are right. Lesson Learned, however I did go to his shop in person, looked at the engine, shook hands with him, and saw all the parts he was listing and selling along with multiple parts cars. He seems like a good guy. I am hoping that he will stop disrespecting me and get this deal done, or return the money.

If he is scamming, there will be others that will reach out to me to help make my case, or he will complete this deal.

Posted by: Cracker Dec 31 2012, 01:46 PM

Based upon what you reported I'd simply leave a voicemail. You have 3 days to do one of two things; 1) deliver the engine, or 2) Fedex me a check for the full refund. If not, a police report will be filed for theft/fraud. You will press charges. If he does neither - follow through with your options.

Please, please, please tell us you at least filled out a simple Bill of Sale?!?!?!?!?!

"MR. NICE GUY" IS LONG OVER!

I never understood the logic of making a public post warning about someone but then not mentioning a name.

Hints? Really? What is this, some sort of game show? Kindergarten? confused24.gif

I'd rather have the name out in the open. That way the guy has a chance to defend himself and everyone else has a chance to make up their mind.

Put everything on the table and be prepared for the consequences, good or bad.

Sorry Sir Andy but I disagree with you.

I made a deal in good faith. Before I expose him on Three Boards, I wanted to see if there might be some commonality to his business, or if not, maybe a good reason he is now underground for me and has my money. I know that this parts business is not easy. The few times I have had to ship out things and cores, it was a PITA for me. The legitimate parts guys provide a valuable and much needed service, and I do have respect for their hard work and support. I am not playing games I assure you. However, I do not want to cause any person or business any unwarranted damage.

I think a request for PM's was reasonable on my part. Let's see who if any steps out.

Sadly you are probably right. He surfaced on three boards around mid-October. Again, I did meet him in person. I wasn't completely blind. Stupid maybe....

Posted by: Scarlet75 Dec 31 2012, 02:38 PM

I will call the name out for you running914 there now everyone knows. And now he can answer or not his choice. It maybe just a simple misunderstanding. confused24.gif Members do have a right to know so as not to become victims. I want to know who it was because later down the road I made need a part and I will avoid that person.

No offense, but to me this post looks like you're trying to build public opinion to support your side without giving the guy a chance to tell his side of the story.

You already took this to the public (no turning back now) but in a very one-sided manner.

My point still stands:
Put everything on the table and be prepared for the consequences, good or bad.

I'm not going to defend the guy, I've been burned by a few people before too. But, I have purchased a few small items from this guy, and he did deliver on time, and the parts were as described. Please give him a chance to resolve this matter quickly. Lord knows, we all need good spare parts for our cars. Just my opinion.

Well as I started the post, not the post I wanted to make. I was hoping that maybe that a little squeak would get his attention. Since he is already outed, I am talking about RUNNING914 or Danny Hunter of Easton, PA. I don't want anyone to make the wrong association. And you are right. I am one sided, as expected, giving all opportunities, however out the money, out the engine, and not being communicated with.

Posted by: JawjaPorsche Dec 31 2012, 03:08 PM

This is a shame because 99.9% of people on this forum are great people to deal with.

Posted by: Cracker Dec 31 2012, 03:17 PM

That is good to hear but when a fella supposedly doesn't make good on multiple appointments (with a buyer who has taken off work for him) and says he'll be there in 3 hours (and then goes quiet) but never shows is the equivalent to that of a thief/scum. Just calling it the way I see it.

Of course, this is assuming the OP is sharing the truth, which seems to be the case.

Well that is good news. Quickly is good. Hasn't beent that way and I have had many excuses, and now no communication. I think it is a delivery problem.

He was to have a guy deliver, then problems with the guy, then he was taking Sunday off to deliver himself, leave by 6:00 am be there by noon. No Show, No Call.
I found him at home at 5:00. He sent a guy after all. He's 1-2 hours out, No Show, No Call. Sent Emails last night. No response. No contact all day. Giving all benefits of doubt, but beginning to think the worst. Thats why I said if delivery is a problem, man up and just send by truck, but at least start telling the truth. Not sending me emails looking for more money upfront for more parts when I can't get whats owed.

Here is what I am dealing with"

Hello, John,Here are a few picts of your parts , muffler $50.00, air box excellent condition $40.00, heater boxes $35.00, and auxillary light mounts, $20.00, John the sail trim is not cheap i have a guy who has them in excellent condition for $ 75.00, Its an apearence part, I sell ones that are not perfect for 50.00 and they sell like hot cakes, This is the last set i have, and from what i am finding out, They will not exist much longer, The price of a good set in the near future will be in the hundreds of dollars, I attached a pict of the ones iI will remove for you, The total cost is 220.00, I have the motor crated and in my freinds truck, He will be leaving reading pa, thursday morning, At 8:00, according to gps he shouls arrive around 1:00, is that good for you, i want to ask you a favor, I spent hundreds of dollars in the shipping end of my buisness, Could i trouble you to send me they part money western union today, I need to pay for The sail trim, blower box and heater boxes, They are not mine, The guy has other people wanting these parts, You can deduct the cost oif western union bill from the total cost of 220.00, You can do western union on line, They will give you a code number, You give that to me and i can go pick up the money, I will then go and take the sail trim off today, Today is really the only time I have to take a ride,my information is Danny Hunter Easton pennsylvania 18042, i will be giving you a call in about a half hour, John i dont like to have to ask this but I really have no choice, I have a few thousnad dopllars out in parts deliveries, Thank you in advance Danny

He is the last person I could ever see calling someone out unless
he had a legitimate issue.

His honesty is beyond question in my book.

I had recently considered doing business with Danny (real name?), but declined when he wouldn't accept PayPal. I just don't do 1st dates without protection beer.gif

I noticed later he was inundating numerous sites with parts.

I asked him to update the vin database on 914World with his cars so we could track their end-of-life, so to speak.

He refused saying he didn't have enough time with all the shipments he was trying to get out.

He offered to send me 4 green top injectors for my review, but I declined again - just REAL odd.

I hope he comes to the board to establish his end, make it right and then resign quietly...

Life does happen, I among many know this, but not responding or doing so with negativity when someone has spent cold hard cash with you is unforgivable in my book.

In my opinion, the minute I see "Western Union" I just assume it is a complete rip-off. You may as well just go flush that money down the toilet.

That is most likely why he doesn't take PayPal. I have reports that he did at one time and had issues.

Thank you for your offer. My car is a 1.7 and I tore it down to build a 2056. My car is in for paint now that I finished the rust removal and has been running big $$$. I Thought I would buy a running injected engine to throw in while I sorted the car out on reassembly.

I bought a parts car this past August. It was just before Labor Day, and due to my busy schedule, asked if I could leave the car there til I had the time to come get it. Turns out that it somehow went missing before I got back to pick it up. I had to sue them to get my cash back.

I would post this guy's information on every site. It will probably save more than a few people from getting scammed in the future.

Yes but I am on the phone now. The 914 is all I have now. I am a Porsche guy from way back.

My. dad had a 57 A That we had to put a crowbar under the seat to keep it from falling through. I bought my first slate gray 356 in my teens

I need to amend my signature. When I set it up I did not know the protocol.

I noticed on one of his ads, he mentioned something like " this is a business"
The tone was a red flag to me.
In my opinion, there should be a rule for someone selling parts to fund a project and an individual selling items as a business.

As most of our reputable busineses here, they have a barner or a link that redirects us to their site or inventory. I think thats the right way for a vendor to advertise here unless it is a group buy.

the site was overload with items from the same vendor. I don't think this is fair for us tryng to use resources here to save our teeners. As a busines a vendor should go to the guidlines of purchasing a barner and host their inventory elsewhere.

Just My 2 cents.

Ok, I bought a small part from Danny a couple weeks ago for $33.45 and he said he didn't take PayPal so he would send the part out and if I was satisfied with it to mail him a check or money order which I did since I was happy with the part. Said he didn't take Paypal because he had some issues with them, I am guessing someone filed a claim and locked up his account. Here is some emails he sent me:
Dec. 16th

Hello, Mike, I am in the process of building a web site, I was wondering If you could send me a pict of your car, I beleive that sombody such as you and the way you demand your parts to be top shelf, You must have a very nice 914, If so I would like to use it on my web site front page, If you would see fit, Thank you Danny

Currently I am waiting for a rear tail light lens he offered me and if it is as described I will send off a money order to him. These are the only dealings I have had with him and so far I have been satisfied.

I met him at his house. There was a multi bay garage that was full of 914 parts and items laid out for photography. I only saw one complete car but the parts supply would suggest he had cars stashed somewhere. I am thinking he might have inherited a garage from family. There is a picture of such on an old eBay link he once used.

Eek. The grammar in that email would have been enough to tell me to "look elsewhere". I feel for those that have been burned by this guy. So far, I have had nothing but awesome dealings with the members on this forum!

I even remember when I first joined the forum, a member sent me a perfectly good alternator (for free!) just to get my car back on the road. I can't remember his name (black and yellow racecar), but it's something I'll never forget!

Best of luck.

I certainly can't advise you what to do, but if it was me,
I would call the Easton Police and seek their guidance. They may tell you six weeks to fulfill a sale is not unreasonable (particularly during the holidays). If they say you have a legitimate issue they can recommend a course of action which may or may not include-

Filing a formal complaint with the police.
Taking him to small claims court. It wouldn't even be about the 500$ anymore, it would be about demanding justice be done and sending a message that unethical behavior has consequence's. I don't believe for one minute one action would modify his behavior but taking "no" action certainly reinforces that behavior.

Reporting his business to the BBB
Posting the facts on the boards as you have done. Just the facts and timeline. people can then draw their own conclusions.
The Police may advise you to refrain from posting his real name or address, unless he uses his real name as his business name.
File a complaint with the FBI internet fraud.

wndsnd,

If you need a 1.7 injected motor, I can LOAN you a spare one until you are done with it.

You would need to bring a truck and spend about 30 minutes getting it out of hiding...but it ran when I pulled it out a few months ago.

Update,

Danny contacted me this morning and said he was through..

"Hello, John today my 914 world site has bee suspended, I return for your services YOU CAN NOW, MAKE WHATEVER ARRANGMENT TO PICK UP YOUR MOTOR, I refuse to do anything about your situation at all, According to my attorney, Shipping was the issue, Not the sale , you came and saw the motor, You called me back and said well lets clean it up and do the extra work, Their was never any cost for the extra work involved, Now you are also being notified of that issue as well, I thouroughly beleive that byou owe me the shipping, You paid no money for extra service work, Every day it sits in my shop you will also be paid storage, Have a great day Danny Hunter"

It looks like I in fact have a good deal because he is going to be paying me storage biggrin.gif

I replied with some email copies for his attorney to review.

Danny,

The agreement "contract" always was for you to deliver the engine, per email below. I am waiting for you to return my money. A USPS Money Order or Cashiers check will be fine. And I did pay you more than your asking price to include the delivery. It is all in writing. You got the email, you came and picked up the check, you cashed the check the next day. All that is left to do now that you have breached this contract is for you to return the money.

" Danny,

If you will clean it up and get it shipped to 01913 for $500.00 I will take it. It was good meeting you today. I wish I had more time to spend and talk with you. I should have just gave you a check today but I can paypal you or if you are in the Allentown area you can pick up a check as I am not flying out till Friday morning. Let me know. Thanks John"

"Danny Hunter,

I AM CALLING YOU OUT ON THIS. TELL ME SPECIFICALLY THAT YOU ARE NOT GOING TO DELIVER THIS ENGINE AND NOT RETURN MY MONEY.

I HAVE ALL THE PAPERWORK PREPARED TO FILE WITH THE POLICE A THEFT AND FRAUD REPORT.

John"

Now He will ship.

"John, Here is what i am going to do, I will have the motor shipped to you, I will pay for it, I will do this on monday morning, You will have the shipping companys name and phone number, I just really dont want nothing to do with you, I will honor our agreement, About the motor, and in all honesty, I regret ever getting involved with you, You know dam well i was being more than fair, Your problem is you have money and know what these things really would cost and seen an opportunity to take advantage of my kindness, You did that, If you think this is somkind of game or con job i was trying to do to you, You are wrong, I had some issues, I could not help that, Their is one thing i can do, Just give you what the hell you paid for, In the big picture The only thing i lost was some faith in people, Because i truely beleived that you would be understanding about the extra work and understand that,Parts cost money, Working on a motor takes my time costs money, Vacume lines cost money, Preperation and cleaning the motor takes materials that costs money, You act like i was trying to get a million dollars out of you, You looked at me like a buisness deal that you knew you were on the better end of, Instead of a man trying to get you what you desired, If that makes me a bad guiy then I guess i am guilty, You should wake the hell up and realise, that not every situation in life is about trying to do what is always best for your selfish ass, your motor will be shipped, The cost to me is $ 375.00 plus the added cost of 285.00, to tow a truck, and another $75.00 in material; to do the motor and my time to do the motor,You won john yahooo yahooo, Danny"

Now I do not want

"Danny,

Save yourself the freight charges and return the cash immediately, you are good with Western Union, or PayPal. I do not believe you or trust you or the engine at this point.

John"

Now he is ?????????????? headbang.gif

And I have talked to the PD..

"...Their is one thing i can do, Just give you what the hell you paid for"

Damn, don't you hate it when after every avenue the only option you have left is to do what you agreed to do in the first place? Always such a hassle.

I think Mr. Hunter should stop trying to deal car parts and take some English classes. Or as Danny boy would put it, "inglesh clasis."

sheeplove.gif

Really all thsi boils down to is (to quote Cool Hand Luke) "failure to communicate." If Mr. Hunter did have the best intentions (let's say just for the sake of argument that he did), ALL he had to do was COMMUNICATE. He claimed on the Porsche 911 car ad on AA that he checks his email daily. Even if he didn't, he SHOULD if he is making a BUSINESS of selling ANYTHING on a DAILY BASIS. Moreover (now there's a word he's never heard before), let's say (again) that he did have the engine and in good working order, was going to clean it up as agreed at whatever extra cost or lack thereof (if he chose not to charge then that was his decision) and just had problems with shipping it - as he claims - then what is it to just pick up the phone or send an email stating "I have your engine ready. It is running and cleaned up as you requested. I have attached pictures of it for your satisfaction. I am having an issue with the shipper at the moment which is delaying shipping to you. It is taking longer than I anticipated, so for that I apologize. I am trying to get the issue resolved with the shipper. If it is not resolved in a timely manner, I will seek another shipper. Again, I apologize for the delay. I will be happy to let you know when this issue is resolved and engine is going to be shipped. Thank you for your patience."

This BUSINESS is called customer SERVICE. It's a minute of your day to let your CUSTOMER know that what was understood is being delayed, work it out and extend the courtesy of an apology. If things happen beyond your control as we all have to rely on someone else for certain things in business, I'm SURE yoru customer will not only understand, but APPRECIATE you being considerate and taking a minute just to keep them informed. AND more likely to do business with you again because you were being considerate - which is WHAT YOU (Mr. Hunter) SHOULD DO IN THE FIRST PLACE.

So whatever excuses Mr. Hunter makes about how it was out of his hands, all he had to do was say, "Hey, I'm having an issue with the shipper. Sorry for the delay. Trying to get it resolved ASAP. Will let you know when resolved and engine is shipping. Thanks." Instead of accusing you for not appreciating all the work that he did and that he didn't charge you for this and that and now he is going to spend twice as much to get you the engine on his dime and tell you he won't take your money etc. stromberg.gif

Not a good business man. Just giving you the bizness.

Exactly. Well said. If Danny would have just called on those days that he promised delivery and I waited around all day for nothing I would have been fine with that. His problem is that he has an unreliable driver, with an unreliable truck, and he doesn't seem to be able to make the trip, so he should have put it on a truck a week ago. And all his complaining about me is BS. All I did was treat him with respect, and his business with respect. And one of the reasons I was talking about more parts with him was to make the delivery better for him. But I sure wan't going to give him more money up front. I told him I would pay on delivery. And, I had planned on giving him a tip for the service. So the world through Danny's glasses is tainted dark. $500.00 is a lot of my car money despite what he thinks my financial position is. He told me he just purchased an $8900.00 3.6 to put into his 914. I don't have a 3.6! I don't have a stinking old $500.00 1.7!

Spoken from a person with some self discipline. In the end when the money is spent and you wish it had been more you turn to behaviors that annoy others. And without that self discipline it happens over and over and you don't know why, and you don't know why every one is on your case. Frankly, I don't see how anyone can make a real living selling a few used parts a day or week, even if they are junk. I feel sorry for the whole thing. For some reason selling automobiles can bring out the worst in people who are otherwise great. Twice I have bought 911s on trust and both times the sellers were hiding, I mean hiding, problems that made the car worth a lot less.

Fortunately for the most part this particular *World* is a nice place to hang out and trade.
