914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914-6 Long Repair -Am I nuts to tackle it myself?

I always knew my factory 914-6 had rust lurking under the rockers, but I didn't want to investigate for fear finding something bad. Last winter I bit the bullet and pulled the outer rockers. As is likely customary, I found a bunch of moist debris that had accumulated around each respective jack point. After close inspection with a screwdriver it appears that only the outer sheet metal needs attention. I know this thread is worthless without pictures, but humor me... There is an area measuring roughly 8" x 4" directly surrounding the passenger side jack post that needs replacing. Am I nuts to try to tackle this myself? I've done some welding and have a welder, so I am not averse to doing it.
If the collective experts think I should tackle it I have a couple of follow up quesitons. I assume I should pull the engine and trans to do this? Is there anyone in the Minneapolis area with the support bars that span the door area?

May you don't have to pull anything. Post some photos and I'll give you my opinion.

Here are a couple of pics I snapped last year. I couldn't find any of the passenger side, but that side is not nearly as bad as the passenger side.

Don't feel bad. I've had my car since June of last year and I still haven't pulled the rockers to look mainly because I'm scared of what I'll find. I know long repairs are fairly common on this site, but does anyone know of any good, instructive, long repair threads for beginners?

I did my own (complete left and right sides) many years ago, I'm in St Bonifacius and could give a hand. Not a hard job you.just have to go about it carefully.

That's way more than a parch. Have Paul take a look at it. His car is top notch. It can be repaired without setting it up on a bench. Lots of guys have done it. But if your a novice welder you may not want to fudge up your factory 6. Do it right and protect the value.
