How far upstate are you talking about? I don't like to let my teener stray too far from the nest. She could stand a little bit of work smoothing out the shift into 2nd. I suspect when the PO shortened up the shift pattern it screwed up the scyncro. It would be nice to learn how to fix it myself.

60 miles North of NYC in the Poughkeepsie area.

Posted by: injunmort Feb 14 2013, 04:21 PM

I am definitely in, right in my backyard

Posted by: tod914 Feb 14 2013, 10:20 PM

Ray that was Chappaqua. Paul the seller, pointed out where they lived when we did the test drive. Very nice area. This is across Thruway from New Paltz. Probally less than an hour from you. A couple of C&Cs going on this weekend. I might try to make one.

Posted by: beech4rd Feb 15 2013, 10:10 AM

I'm in. An hour's drive away.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 16 2013, 05:09 PM

Alright gents, this is a GO! If you are a serious builder, PM me for payment details. Seal kits can be bought on your own or bought from me for $40. smile.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 16 2013, 08:51 PM

I need a count, soon, as I am limited by the venue. So far he feels he can only handle 6-7 people and he may already have that number. So, if you are serious, and/or have a local place to this that has the ability to support more than 7 people, let me know.

Posted by: flippa Feb 16 2013, 09:21 PM

Count me in if there is space!

Posted by: injunmort Feb 17 2013, 10:34 AM

I can accommodate more than 7. have 3 open bays 1.5 car lengths long if that helps.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 17 2013, 10:35 AM

That does help, where are you located? I am trying to coordinate between two boards for this and it is a PITA smile.gif If we can meet at one place that is bigger, then we can get as many done as want to come.

...mort's place is huge....see in the background; that's like half the area.
not that I'm trying to promote you on this one Mort, but you garage/work area just begs for a get-together. Not to mention your on the side of a mountain without neighbors to piss off with the usual 914 shinanagins. (sp.?)

Here is the short version. Sign up. Bring your transmission to Mort's. tear it down and rebuild it with the expert supervision of Mike. Meet the other 914 guys and have a good time drunk.gif

PS HOw is gold dust doing driving.gif

I assume its ok if there is a car attached to it?

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 22 2013, 08:13 PM

Not if you expect to drop it, rebuild it, and reinstall it?

Bummer, i'm not capable of removing myself. I am a wannabe mechanic but just dont have the capability to remove it. I thought this event was the whole banana. My bad! I really wish i had the benefit of having more 914 peeps in the SJ area..

sad.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 22 2013, 10:31 PM

The big issue is that it takes time to remove and reinstall and the exhaust is the bad part. Lots of potential that we have an issue.

Ask for help before the clinic. I bet you can get it.

Posted by: Kraftwerk Feb 25 2013, 09:16 PM

An opportunity for me to re-build my trans! ( I have an extra which out of the car. Maybe I will drop mine and bring both? One for parts... Do I need to bring a table? is there a list of tools to bring?
I have never done anything like this... I am not sure either trans even needs re-building, but lets face it, one at least probably does, right?
Both are tail shift. Is there an option to change to side shift at this time? Do I need to track down a SS case? I already have the s/s rod / engine bracket as. (Can one even change a tail shifter case to side shifter I forget... ) Also I would be interested in flipping the gears ,deviating from stock? Can I get some advice on that before hand so I can arrive prepared? So many questions! Anyway sounds like a fun time.

ps Hey Scott,
The "Gold Brick" is great, (well looks sweet sitting there) I have the gas tank out - going install new s/s lines pretty soon & maybe move the pump to the front.

Posted by: Dr Evil Feb 26 2013, 10:23 AM

Maybe I will drop mine and bring both?
Yes, bring both. I guarantee that you will benefit from opening it up. Bring two and make at least one good one.

Do I need to bring a table?
If you can, it doesnt hurt.

Is there a list of tools to bring?
Regular tools. I bring anything special.

Is there an option to change to side shift at this time?
Absolutely. This is not a problem if you have the internal parts. I can sell them to you if you need. You will need:
- Internal shift rods
- Side shift console
- tail cone (optional)

Do I need to track down a SS case?
Nope

Also I would be interested in flipping the gears ,deviating from stock? Can I get some advice on that before hand so I can arrive prepared?
Yes. Gear swaps are easy and can happen at the clinic.

Thanks Doc. This is is sounding real good. I am probably IN just have to re-ask what does the tranny weigh? I think its about 60 lbs. Right? I JUST had hip surgery last week so I SHOULD be up to speed by June.. Just going to check with my OTHER Doctor to see if it is okay to lug one or two of these around in 4 months .. fun times.

I was up at Morts place once, he was bringing a 914 back from the dead, he seemed like a very experienced guy and perfect host.

Posted by: brant Feb 28 2013, 09:42 PM

I'm visiting my inlaws... in the area... at around the same time...

no tools with me though...

anyone have a decent core box they want to sell for the clinic at a decent price?

It might be a good escape from the in-laws after a full week of visitation..... but I can't thing that shipping a core is worth it.

so I'm not going to make it now guys
but I would rather be there!

Brant,

I wonder if we could pull off a clinic at one of the RMVR races?
I am in the middle of pulling apart two 901s right now just to document what is inside and replace gaskets.

I know its a bit hectic, but with the covered parking space and ample campers to sleep in, maybe Dr Evil would like to see how we party in CO at the Rocky Mountain Vintage Races? HPR of course ;-)

Just a thought....

Stu

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 14 2013, 06:51 PM

Ok, I have done a lot of parts sales as of late and this has put a hit on the hard to find stuff. Namely, 1st sliders. I have 4 good used 1/R sliders left. It is generally recommended to replace these and New ones are about $500. If you are strapped for cash and want a low cost alternative, I can sell you one of mine until they are gone.
As there are a lot of you, I will be doing this lottery style. PM me if you need one and on Fri/Sat I will make a list and throw a dart at it or some other random pick technique.

If I get more good ones, I will start making my way down the list. If you want a new one wholesale, I can take orders and try to negotiate a better price for a bulk deal.

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 18 2013, 06:09 PM

Ok fellas, I can get you a discount on new first gear sliders if you want, but you need to act now!

Posted by: 914itis Mar 18 2013, 06:34 PM

Doc, I have a grind on 2nd gear unless I pause between 1st and 2nd. It seems to improve as the transmission warms up. I don't have it when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. What do you think I will need to fix that if I make it there?

If I don't make it, how hard is that to change? Does it involve pulling the whole stack?

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 18 2013, 07:22 PM

Whole stack removal, at least 2 bands, 1 or 2 teeth, one slider. I can take care of ya smile.gif

Posted by: 914itis Mar 18 2013, 07:28 PM

Oh, I have no doubt you can. I have a spare Tail shift that I will be taking apart to see its condition, if I can use the parts from there. If not, give me a cost in parts.

Posted by: injunmort Mar 19 2013, 09:20 AM

I will take a good used slider if you make it that far down the list.

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 19 2013, 06:25 PM

Mort, you have one. On your tab smile.gif

Posted by: injunmort Mar 24 2013, 06:36 AM

so, I have recruited another participant who is local, so I will need another set of gaskets. please send me a total so that I can square up.

Posted by: Dr Evil Mar 25 2013, 07:35 PM

Mort, I will PM you info.

Posted by: Dr Evil Apr 1 2013, 09:01 AM

Hi Folks,

Getting close. FYI, I purchased 3 new 1/R sliders and have two left. Discount pricing!

Posted by: 914itis Apr 1 2013, 10:24 AM

Posted by: Dr Evil Apr 1 2013, 10:57 AM

Posted by: Dr Evil May 4 2013, 07:27 PM

Time is running out. Anyone else in on this?

Posted by: Dr Evil May 4 2013, 10:27 PM

I will be inventorying my used parts here soon and selling them first come first served. If you think you will want new parts, better order now as I get a group discount and it will take time.

I am semi short on synchro bands and most builds need 2 to 3 of them.

Posted by: Dr Evil May 9 2013, 09:24 AM

Still plenty of room for this. Seriously, I have like 4 people coming, including the host.

Posted by: injunmort May 9 2013, 03:32 PM

my wife is going to do one so I will be forwarding payment with that of a couple locals who have committed softly. hey ray, hank, tim, paul, joe, in your back yard. maybe andy could be convinced to take a little road trip.

Posted by: Dr Evil May 9 2013, 04:04 PM

Posted by: balljoint May 9 2013, 04:46 PM

The best part of the clinic is when Dr. Evil dons the giant Top Hat, takes off his shirt and sings a belly button song about gear ratios.

You must all dress like Disney Princesses.

Lots of choices. Good luck gentlemen.

Larry is going to look smashing as "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast.

I believe Andrew was going as Pocahontas.

And Evil was stuck between Cinderella and Rapunzel.

Not that I don't have the time or attention span to read through 22 pages, but:

1. What do I need to bring besides my 2 transmission? as in tools etc?
2. Is there tablesspace or are we expected to bring one?
3. Does it matter how clean your transmission is? If it is drained and cleaned on the outside, is that sufficient or I am expected to open it and clean the inside of the case before getting there?
4. Anything else I should bring besides my food and drink and sleep gear?

Greg

Just some basic tools, 13mm, scraper, some knife blades, latex glove, one can of brake cleaner per trans, rags and old clothes.

If you have an extra table and it's easy to bring sure, but I will have a bunch of tables set up.

Clean the case as best you can but it doesn't have to be spotless. If you can dump the oil that will save me a trip to get rid of it.

DrEvil would rather that you didn't open the case.

Bring anything that you think you have to run to the store for, the general store is 10 minutes drive away and town is a <40 minute round trip.

I stole this list of stuff to bring from that "other" thread. Probably applies for this one as well.

Any other recommendations?

I am trying to shuffle around some meetings on Friday, so I may be out Friday evening depending on what time I get done with work. If it is too late, we'll see you guys Saturday morning.

I am thinking of riding the R1100RT instead of taking the bus. It will just be me and I can likely fit all I need into the copious luggage. Save a shit load on gas, too.

Thank you Mort for hosting such a fun event, thank you Doc for leading us out of the darkness, thank you other guys for making me realize that I wasn't alone in feeling like I was in way over my head and thank you Flippa for straightening us out on English pronunciation. I just hope I get my cah on the road soon so I can go down to the lobstah shack.

Y'all are welcome to visit over this way sometime wink.gif
