914World.com _ 914World Garage _ just another progress thread

Posted by: xsboost90 Nov 14 2004, 08:51 PM

ill go ahead and introduce myself as im a regular on rennlist and recently more on here. My name is dan(xsboost90) since i used to be big time into turbo mk3 supras. Got my first porsche a year ago-89 944 and after doing alot of work/paint etc..traded it for a 924s and a 76 914 2.0. Now im in the process of rebuilding from the ground up this car including cutting out some rust-not too bad someone had already done alot-PO owned a body shop- but missed some in the floor and fenders. I also purchased a motor which has already been totally rebuilt w/ very little milage and a cam from someone local who needed more-200hp 2.0 rat motor!!- for their project. Ill go ahead and start a thread and try to keep its progress posted for those who find these things handy. I also have a couple of pics of what i plan on it to look like in the next couple months when i paint it..yes im a jack of all trades so to speak. Thanks, stay tuned. driving.gif

Welcome to the board! I'll look forward to following your progress. (Maybe it will encourage me to move a little faster on mine!)

So, any plans to BOOST the 914?

Posted by: xsboost90 Nov 14 2004, 08:54 PM

i threw a "pull the motor out party" this saturday, it was...short lived as it took a half hour to pull the motor and six more to drink all the beer.

now i have the rear suspension out and im going to weld up the rear floor section, strap the rear arms/ frame and rockers inside the car, and install some s2- yes 944 s2 springs in the rear as they are the same size diameter and factory 160lbs. I also have some 924s phone dials that when i drill the rear and w/ the adapters on the front-eventually 911 suspension up front- bolt right up 6" wheels.

this is what im planning on the car to look like eventually.

i doubt itll ever get boosted..but we'll keep that option open.

Never think for one second yours is "just" another progress thread. I think it is a lock that everybody's two favorite things about this place are: 1)instant access to an unbelievable amount of knowledge and experience 2) the chance to gain motivation and vicariously live through the projects of others by following their resto threads. boldblue.gif smilie_pokal.gif

Remember though, there is no such thing as too many pics, but you will get your balls busted if you don't post enough. laugh.gif monkeydance.gif

Well said Chris. I wub.gif progress pics and stories. Can't have enough pics.

Dan, if you need any help, I'm in the area and could donate the occasional Saturday afternoon here and there. What part of Cincy are you located? You hang with any of the VW guys?

FWIW, I also own a white '76 2.0 (rolller)....for now. May be going to new owner when the facilities become available. Then I'll start on my Blau '75 Ca roller.

I like the idea of welding up the cowl to fender seam, hey it's not like the fenders are 'bolt-on'. Looks good, and eliminates one of the many "rust traps" so common on these cars.

I'm all for customizing and modifying these cars to suit. The only version IMO that would be worth keeping absolutely "stock" is an original -6.

That being said, what's up with that yellow one...... huh.gif lol2.gif

Aircooledboy is correct, PICS, PICS, and more PICS! beer.gif

got the floor all cut out the other day and ready to patch up, not much rust, just at the rear corner of the firewall and floor.

made a patch panel for the center and welded it all up, next step will be the sides and center below the linkage...should be fun.

Posted by: xsboost90 Nov 17 2004, 08:59 PM

sprayed some rust preventer stuff all in the entire center section of the floor all the way down to the pedals, sprayed rock guard around the welds in the patch panel, and then undercoated the whole deal...should keep it from coming back for awhile..I also made some drain holes in the patch to let out any water that may find itself back inthere.

hey thanks! got my rear arms apart tonite and cleaned them up to spray. NExt to have the rear hubs drilled...

Posted by: Bleyseng Nov 19 2004, 11:37 PM

Nice pics and yes, ditch the crappy adapters and get the hubs drilled before they break.

Geoff

Posted by: xsboost90 Nov 22 2004, 10:39 PM

getting there, got one more piece welded into the firewall, doing a piece at a time to get the shapes all correct. I just finished welding in the pieces around the linkage/fuel lines/throttle cable and clutch cable. I had to weld the end of the clutch tube back on as well...kinda broke off. Then after i weld each piece im using etch primer to the bare metal and then using rock guard to fill in and seal the gaps around the edges. THen im using rubberized under coating over that! Im also using a rust prohibiter on the inside of the panels to keep me from having to do this again..hopefully. I like overkill.

That sounds interesting, please post pictures of the rear flares on the car. I always thought that would look cool. You are the first one I have heard of attempting it.

well, i had my bud cut the flares off of this car before he tows it off, they are now sitting in my garage w/ my pile-o-parts. After i get my swing arms welded up and its sitting on all four again, im going to put on my slicks and check clearance. Based on that, i will cut out the lip of the fender, weld in the flares, and weld the lip back in like factory. IF it clears-doubt it- then ill leave it be, but i dont see that..of course.

We will be watching the flare thing closely.

Andrew has been eyeballing my spare set of 944 rear quarter pannels sitting in the backyard. We did some measurements a few times and it is a possibility. Maybe have to put them on backwards due to the length of the pannels. We never got any further than that.

(if anyone else gets the bug, I'll let them go cheap... IPB Image )

Are you still going with the 2 tone paint scheme?

Posted by: jd74914 Jan 6 2005, 11:22 AM

Yeah. We need pics of the 944 flares on your car if you every get to that. I've been thinking about that for a while (I don't especially like the look of gt flares, or the cost) I've never seen an teener with them though.

Great work, and good luck IPB Image

Posted by: xsboost90 Jan 8 2005, 09:33 AM

ok so still working on the swing arms-may get them painted today- but i got them in primer and ready. I also ended up selling the mirror i just bought and buying a cool set of custom ones from the local street rod store. I like these much better than the chromey.

Yeah im still doing the two tone paint but i may be changing some things. IM thinking about something alittle brighter but without being like a f&f car. Ill prob. keep the black lower but make the top something besides silver, like candy tangerine or blue or something...dunno yet.

what if the paint scheme looked more like this????would this be porsche-lly offensive? The orange would actually be like a copper or candy tangerine color. Or maybe silver with the flames...the black would be inside the flames and the lower flames would just be pinstripe..yeah i do that too.

I have these exact mirrors on my 914. They came on it when I bought it. They rock! IPB Image One thing though, I had the 914 painted and never bothered to check the mirror placement/adjustement (never drove the 914 before I painted it) and trusted the PO's mounting. Big mistake, they are too far to the rear of the car. Make sure to mount them ahead of the quarter window post depending on how tall you are ect. So I have to look down to see through mine. Sucks, but dang, they look sweeeeeet! IPB Image

The 944 flares, go for it. I saw one 914 like 10 years ago with 944 front and rear flares. Looked like they were made for the car! I was too young and dumb to take pic's though. But looked great.

picked up my 911 spindles, rotors, calipers and master cylinder tonite. It looks like the mc wont work though. I mounted everything up to make sure it would fit and everything is great but the offset of my wheels is going to require me to space the front almost two inches! I used my early 944 hubs to mount the rotors and they fit fine. Now on to find another master and disassemble the front end, paint/detail, new bearings and check out the floor in the front before i can put it all back together again! IPB Image

Posted by: xsboost90 Feb 13 2005, 10:39 AM

got my turbo tie rods, installed the rack again after i finished welding and undercoating the front end. Waiting for my german liscense plate to come in air mail! Started installing the front suspension again tonite and hopefully have it back on wheels again tomorrow or monday so i can start body work. Im finished w/ rust!!!! Finally time to get back to the stuff i like, paint!

Did you scrape everything out of the wheel wells before spraying more undercoating on?

What undercoating did you use? I've got to get a lot of it, as I've got shiney new floors right now.

Keep up the great work. Maybe I can drive mine down there and I'll have you paint it too! (I'm dreading that part)

Posted by: xsboost90 Feb 19 2005, 10:38 PM

i tried a bunch, best out there is 3m, the big can. That stuff rocks. I did the entire front under w/ one can, and the rear w/ one can.

Posted by: CptTripps Feb 20 2005, 09:32 AM

I've got a can of the NAPA stuff, the DynaMat stuff, and another off-brand. (Not that those aren't.) I'll give them all a shot on some scrap and see what looks like it'll work the best.

Is thicker better, or endurance? Did you prime first?

Posted by: xsboost90 Feb 20 2005, 09:36 AM

i wire brushed the old stuff off and roughed up the surface a bit w/ some scuff pads.

the 3m seems to spray out alot nicer and cover much better. It also seems to stick better than the cheaper stuff.

Posted by: CptTripps Feb 20 2005, 10:01 AM

Looking back at your older posts...

Are the holes in the center tunnel something I should do? that seems like a place that rust could START rather than prohibiting it.

throw A sway abr on there while you are doing front end work wink.gif

Posted by: xsboost90 Feb 20 2005, 02:20 PM

oh yes, a sway will be in there before the tank goes in, im still saving my pennies and trying to decide on a 19 or 22mm sway bar. Im thinking just get the 22.... huh.gif

Posted by: xsboost90 Feb 22 2005, 09:46 PM

well, it took some small spacing but the calipers fit like a glove. Finally got the rack hooked back up and the parts prepped, painted and installed. Yet to get brake lines or mc yet. Now its time to prep under the tank area, get ready for a sway bar, and do some body work! Also got my euro german plate in to stick up front. Progress..i can see it coming together finally!

in most cases, when im painting a car, ill just sand it down. This thing has been redone once before, and painted w/ enamel, so i wanted to make sure it was not an issue. I used Aircraft Stripper, cant remember the name brand but it comes in a gallon. Heavy duty stuff, i had to run the exhaust fan and open a door to keep from being overcome by fumes. Now i just need to sand everything down, fix the crap underneath and primer/ block primer, paint! I keep saying im not going to strip the front fenders because i dont want to know what is under there, but ill prob end up stripping those too.

sprayed alittle primer tonite, its just for blocking out body work, but its progress. Ds quarter looks good, two little dingers. Ps is getting close.Hopefully she'll be ready for paint before next month.

What did you use for primer? Just rattle-can stuff, or is there something particular?

I'm going to start tearing the paint off tomorrow. We'll see how far I get, but I want to cover it with SOMETHING so it won't start 'turning brown' on me early.

Keep up the great work...

Posted by: xsboost90 Mar 31 2005, 09:49 PM

i use evercoat euro-primer, its high fill and sands very well. Not great for keeping things from rusting in wet weather, you need some sealer primer for that or self etching. More pics of progress and stuff i bought.

mine would be mostly in primer by now but this quarter is really messing w/ me, should be able to spray some tomorrow. Got it all vac'd out and taped up tonite.

Dan, I've got a right rear quarter I'd sell cheap if you decide to go that route. It was cut off at the targa bar but the rest is there.

naw, i think i got the quarter whipped, got most of the car in primer today, front fenders, rear quarters, both trunk lids, ds door. Still need to finish the ps door and the engine cover, do some small ding repair on the fenders, etc but almost there.

How is your primer working? I've never worked with the high-fill stuff before and am curious as to how well it works.

Posted by: xsboost90 Apr 3 2005, 09:58 PM

sand everything w/ 180, put a nice coat of hi fill on there and wet sand it in a couple hours- ready to paint. This stuff flows nice and doesnt shrink up much. Anything heavier than 180 and when it does shrink you could have sand lines showing after paint.

Posted by: CptTripps Apr 3 2005, 10:12 PM

I'm going to have a hell of a time. My car had LOTS of bondo on it, and it looks like he roughed it up with a fork or something. I may have to do a second coat of primer and/or paint. I'm new to all of this, so time will tell. Are you and I in some sort of race that neither of us knows about? We both seem to be at about the same point at all times...that and were both in Ohio.

Sweet. IMO you don't see nice two-tone 914 paint jobs often enough. The way you made the line between the two colors follow the "bones," rather than run it flat and parallel to the ground, reminds me of a Foose paintjob on Overhaulin'. You could "Foose-ize" that paint even more with a little bit of color between the two.

Nice work. Can't wait to see the finished product. pray.gif

Posted by: xsboost90 Apr 20 2005, 05:03 PM

i actually had a harley those two exact colors! I wanted to paint it silver but i liked the black look too, so i kinda combined them. I saw the foose show your talking about, thats kinda why i moved my line up further towards the top, right where the reflection is on the fenders. Ive kicked around a third color in between but no matter what i just didnt like it, so i deleted it all together. Tell you the truth im thinking of doing some old school pinstripes on it like an old hot rod would have but i dont know if it would look right. Here ist the finished product outside getting wetsanded. I still need to fix some things here and there, paint the hood, trunk and trim but at this point i can at least start reassembling after its all buffed. clap.gif

Looking great man....VERY well done!

I'd kicked a 2-tone around too. Yellow-Black. Hell, maybe I will still do it. I dig the line you followed. Shows a lot of thought and effort. I never liked the 3-tone idea. I could never find a 3rd color that worked with bright colors. Maybe if I was doing brown, you could do 2-3 shades, but...it'd be brown. biggrin.gif

You'll have a weekend to get further ahead of me while I'm at WCC....bastard!

xsboost90,

I really like it. I would never have thought so. It turned out great. My suggestion would be to keep the rockers & valances the light silver color. I believe it will make the car look lower to the ground & not add another color line.

What do you guys think?? I say light silver rockers & valances.

Tom

oh yes, that is the plan, everything on the bottom silver, everything on the top including the roof, glossy black.

smilie_pokal.gif Lookin great, I like the 2 tone . I never thought I would actually say this but how about clear lenses on the front? I never liked them, but I think it may werk on your car. I like to see something different being done to these cars. I have been considering putting some gold pearl over my dads signal orange. Purists can eat it!! biggrin.gif J.K. I have another car that will be ALMOST all original.

Posted by: xsboost90 Apr 27 2005, 06:12 AM

well, i figured out my brake line problems last nite, had british instead of european lines- and almost got everything ran. The front is done, new lines and rubber lines, got the rear close but had to paint the calipers, backing plates and rotor hats, so i stopped for the nite.

Also got my new 205 yoko's mounted up and test fit and they clear the quarters MUCH better than those wide 225's-never thought i'd say 225 was wide- and doesnt look bad either!!! I'll get some more good pics tonite when i finish up the brakes, hopefully i can bleed them all out tonite and this baby will be ready to start getting the motor/ trans cleaned up to go back in!!

Posted by: xsboost90 May 5 2005, 08:24 PM

got some work done tonite, painted the gas tank, installed the heater box under the hood and made some rubber blocks to set the tank on out of the rollover pads of a 924s i parted out. Finally got the pieces all put together and set the tank in. I found the piece the strap sets on after this pic so now its installed correctly.

welder.gif also time to fix yer avatar so the two tone matches (black on top)......

Posted by: xsboost90 May 15 2005, 07:45 PM

got almost everything wired up besides the one green wire that is i think for the temp guage. Prob. going to have to get new ignition wires since these seem too short. confused24.gif I put my new battery tray in and the old battery to test fit. Couldnt help myself and i hooked it up and cranked the motor a couple times over to see if everything was working. Fuel pump ran, blinkers worked, engine turned, brake lights do not work?????not sure why. Is the brake light switch just the one on the mc? That should be new and hooked up.

Still waiting for my dist hold down to show up before i can put the distributor back in, and ive been replacing fuel line that is NEW with some fuel injection hose that is alittle better-$80 worth of rubber hose dry.gif - even though the old new stuff says 50lbs on it. My g/f recovered my spare tire cover today w/ the black carpet i bought while i was fixing the shifter in her 924s, and i put the rubber bumper covers and my german front plate on. No pics till tomorrow, forgot to take it to the garage.

We discussed today how the interior was going to go together and my g/f is getting some yards of suede leather to cover the lower parts of the door panels and the headliner, perhaps a few other small spots. If i cant get the dist in monday, i will most likely be installing the headlight motors and such in the front of the car. After she is running and driving, the roof, hoods, valances and rockers will need to be sanded, primed and painted to match. Hopefully this will all be in the next three weeks since im pre registered for some stuff the beginning of june. Also need to get those pesky seat brakets made out of something, somehow, sometime.

Impressive work man...That thing looks awesome! Those Fuchs with that paint look wicked.

That first start-up is one of the reasons I'm going to wait a few weeks before I put the optical ignition in. I want to make sure when I get it all together again, it fires right up. I really dig where you put it though...that's the spot I'll put mine too.

Keep it up dude! I'm going to be in Columbus in 2 weeks...maybe we can meet for lunch?

we'll see on lunch, thats a hundred miles from here! Got my starter to crank over tonite, looks like there wasnt good enough ground from the engine to the battery to keep grounded, ran a 924s ground cable from the neg- battery to the starter bolt, seems to work now rolleyes.gif Found out i was mis informed on the rotation of the dist rotor, runs clockwise, not counter. My cool race wires are junk, but the crane cams unit is getting a signal and the coil is throwing spark. Looks like its time to adjust the valves and get some plugs and wires, then see if she'll start. Oh well. Also still trying to find a way to mount my seats, working on it but man its a biatch. welder.gif

IMHO if you went for the two tone paint, you should've kept the dials. I have the same ones (16"?), but the offset and the way the center sticks out no longer suits my desires. I would like one with more "lip". However, since I'm staying with the stock color, I am also going FUCH.

But don't me wrong, your progress and work are amazing! Doing a damn fine job! Wish I had my garage back!

Question: my rear exhaust will not line up w/ the new motors heat exchangers. The new ones dont step up in the rear, they just go straight. THey also have a different pattern as for how they bolt up, the pattern is slightly wider. I have a show to go to in two weeks, anyone have a rear exhaust i can hang on there for a week until i can have my custom one made??? Any idea why this one is different?

Posted by: mihai914 May 23 2005, 10:09 PM

The heat exchangers pictured are for a 2.0 engine, and you probably have a muffler for a 1.7 where the exchangers would bend upwards near the end of the pipes. You should look into a Bursh if on a budget for a new muffler or you can probably post a WTB add, there were some 2.0 mufflers available lately.

Mihai

Posted by: xsboost90 May 24 2005, 05:47 AM

that would make sense, i guess someone had some 1.7 HE's on my old motor! They did bend upwards at the ends. Anyone have a stocker or something i can borrow for a week or two?

Did a quick clutch check and popped it at the end of the driveway and left some nice rubber marks towards the garage. Still need to adjust the brake pedal and rebleed.

finally, all eight bolts holding the seats in- a real bia#ch i may add- and all the carpet its pretty much in. I took the rear window out to reseal it finally and so i havent finished the carpet where the rear pad used to be. May be making a window pad going all across the bottom of it w/ suede on it, like the door panels will be cool.gif I had to get in the zone and get some black carpet which matches the carpet kit perfectly, to fill in the gaps the carpet kit missed ,like under the dash and in between and in front of the seats.

i had to trim it to fit the contour, now i have to fill in the blanks, but ill put in the rear window first. I may be making a trim piece all the way across the top of the firewall that is covered in suede eventually, that would be sweet!

Gotchya - missed that in the text after getting excited over the pics.

I've been thinking of something along those lines myself. Let me know how it works out.

sold some 924 parts tonite and picked up some cool parts from a "local" 914 source. Thank you Doug Leggins for graciously offering up a bursh muffler- i wasnt up to the four hour round trip if i didnt have to though. Picked up this stuff for under a hundey!

I just sent you a PM

Posted by: CptTripps May 27 2005, 05:51 AM

Well done sir! Glad to see you have an exaust that is workable. If the 1.7 is newer, with a little welding, you could use that muffeler section.

Posted by: xsboost90 May 27 2005, 05:58 AM

yeah i thought about that, but the flanges are different, and its more welding than i wanted to mess w/ right now. This one looks pretty good, need to get a collector gasket for the muffler, bbq paint it and throw it on tonite. Cant wait to hear it w/o the open headers. I keep having to talk myself out of throwing the primered hoods on it and cruizing it! Im going to try and get the black stuff primed and painted before sunday, a guy i painted this 53 chev truck for is putting on a "rat rod" car show and wants me to bring the teener. Its unfinished so i guess itll qualify right? Ill make that the maiden voyage!

Posted by: xsboost90 May 28 2005, 08:28 PM

may be able to make the show tomorrow w/ just the hood and trunk painted...Got alot done today, think i figured out my knock or "ping" from bad gas/hot plugs. Got the consule pretty much mounted up, windows installed, rear window glued in w/ window weld eurethane glue, steering wheel in, hillbilly alignment done, lowered the front slightly-rubbed fender anymore than that w/ the 205/55's on there, made brakets for the rear exhaust since the trans exhaust support is still for a 1.7, got my bad wire on the gas guage fixed and got the temp guage working last nite as well.

question- i have a brake light on the dash flashing away, but my brakes work pretty well. what does this mean, i need to rebleed them? A

also, i used 944 front hubs to adapt to five lug, they are so close-the rotor- to the ball joint, that when you lower the car extremely, the rotors start to rub the outer edge of the a-arms. Anyone have this problem? Do i need to get some 911 hubs?

tomorrow- paint hood trunk in the morning and hit the rat rod cruise in tomorrow evening.

That's your Emergency Brake 'alert' light. Annoying...aint it? wink.gif

I just pull the wire on it.

sorry I couldn't make it down there today...I really was all ready for it.

Good luck tomorrow!

Posted by: jim912928 May 28 2005, 11:22 PM

On the flashing brake light issue...if you recently bled the brakes...there is a switch on the master cylinder that needs reset. Look at the master cylinder on the drivers side and you should see a small button like thing...push it in to reset the barke warning light. You have to do this everytime you drain the fluid from the brake system otherwise it will flash constantly.

Posted by: xsboost90 May 29 2005, 06:17 AM

reset! cool! yeah the brakes work great and the ebrake weather its hooked up or not that light flashes.

Posted by: SGB May 29 2005, 11:02 AM

Whooo-wee. Ain't it great to get things done and know they are done right. Way to go!

Posted by: xsboost90 May 29 2005, 05:42 PM

hey, i cant find no stinking reset switch. and the manual doesnt mention it. Where it be at? didnt see one on the mc, maybe i missed it.

Posted by: turbo914v8 May 29 2005, 06:47 PM

Here is a picture of the reset button on the master cylinder. It is a little small button in the center of the white plastic part just above the male connector.

Turbo Paul.

well i figured since a bud of mine was putting on a show today, i would slap on the primered hoods and take the car for a test drive up to the show. Made it to the show ok, but had a couple of issues to attend to when i got home. ONe was the car seems to sputter when you come to a stop, and when you go to take off, it hesitates, then takes off like crazy. The second problem was the rear tires. They were rubbing the rear fenders, slightly, enough to boil the paint on both the rear quarters. Sooo i had to take some camber plates out to get alittle more clearance from the wheel wells, and the sand down the burnt spots on my quarters. Ill be respraying the quarters as well as the roof, rockers, valance and hood/trunk/ hood this week. I reset the electronic ignition timing to double check the adjustment and the timing of the distributor. seemed to run alittle better..

heres a question. theres two places to hook vaccum to the advance on the dist. Now most pics show the hose going to the rear of the advance, like closest to the cap. This seems like it would retard the dist, instead of advance. I put mine on the outside of the dist, seemed to keep my motor from pre-igniting/knocking and runs slightly better. set the computer "knob" to full rich and turned up the idle air screw. Seems to keep a better idle now when coming to a stop. Opinions on how to set this w/o a machine-digital sun analyzer?

well, she made it all weekend without much of a hitch. We put about 500 miles on it this weekend, never ran hot, always ran well. It DOES sit too low and rub the tires in every corner that has so much as a pebble in it. Had some oil shoot out the heads where the blowby tubes are supposed to be- smoke.gif -and smoked out the m3 following me on the 105 mile driving tour portion of the speedfest weekend. Made it to the show after driving the tour for more than two hours and ended up winning second place in the 74-89 911/ 914 class! smilie_pokal.gif

What seats are those? Is there much access to the hand brake?

Posted by: xsboost90 Jun 9 2005, 05:46 AM

friend of mine got them off ebay, they dont have any brand names on them. He sold them to me when he sold his car and put the stockers back in. I had to do some serious fabrication to get them in there, and the ebrake now has just enough room to pull it all the way up, and drop it down, but it is against the seat when you pull it up. cool.gif

if you need a black cover for your tow hook check out Lowes or Home Depot. Look in the isle with all of the draws of screws and odd bolts. You should see a drawer for plastic cover. If i remember correct, it is 1" and was like 2 dollars. They also have metal/crome ones that can be painted or used with crome bumpers. Your car looks great.
