914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 912 + Subaru STi motor +WRX trans project

Posted by: RonW Feb 16 2013, 04:45 PM

Hey guys, I know its not a 914 but hoping to share info and request help on my project since the 912 board is fairly devoid of these conversions.

car is a '68 912 and last year I installed a 2005 STi Spec-C JDM motor and running the stock ecu and stripped down harness. I used an adapter plate and adapter flywheel and stage 2 Sach pp/clutch.

for exhaust i used a pair of 2 into 1 header stubs that outback makes and brought each bank up to a turbo flange, then exhausted it to Coast Fabrication muffler. used twin turbosmart EWG with a locked out IWG.

on the inlet side, ran it thru the stock MAF thru the turbo to a water/air intercooler and a turbosmart BOV

up front im running a ron davis radiator and a fuel safe fuel cell with the mostly bent tubing run under the car just inboard of the pinch seam, similar to how the factory ran the oil cooler lines and short sections of 1.25" hose connecting.

with the stock ecu ive have the stock tach sent in to North Hollywood Speedo to modify to take the ecu tach signal and redo the face to 8k redline

the rest of the car is set up with 82SC front end and fresh Bilsteins and elephant polybronze bushes all around and lowered ride height.

So that was phase one and been running her for the last 4 months or so. drove from SF area to Santa cruz and if i kept the revs at 3k then got 30 mpg but was only doing like 60 mph. if i increased to 75mph then 3400rpm and 24mpg. so i decided to go down this subaru path yet further and scored and 2010 WRX 5 speed that only had 20k miles on it. I am swapping in a reveres ring and pinion and will utilize 930 adapter flanges.

Problem: one of many come with this swap for a 901 bodied car.
1) 930 axle wont bolt to the short wheel base trailing arms - solution, take later model LWB and have them modified to SWB dimensions by a shop that has a jig for this very mod. this will then allow for clearance and use with those larger stub axle flanges. plus the bonus of bigger brake options - this should be straight forward

2) transaxle mount - modify stock or subaru mount to bolt to the stock location - again wont know til im there

3) shift rod - hoping to mate the stock shift rod and retain the wevo shifter set up but wont know until i get there. i wish i could cable shift like many here have with an MR2 but no room.

THIS IS WHERE I NEED YOUR COLLECTIVE HELP
4) hydraulic slave for clutch - stock is obviously a cable actuated system and i really do not want to try to graft in a Tilton pedal cluster. any recommendations of making this work? ie cable actuation to some type of master to a slave???

any advise would be much appreciated and i hope i'm ok posting my 912 project here.

Or use the inboard suby cv and have the porsche axle cut to length and re-spline??2) transaxle mount - modify stock or subaru mount to bolt to the stock location - again wont know til im there

If you see pics of the tranny when used on vw or buggy, you can cut down the case, and make it look like 915ish.. maybe a 911 shifter????

The master slave is not that big a deal on the 914,, weld a tab to the crossmember, bolt to tab... Im sure we can find some pics...pretty much same frontend as ours.

I like your idea of a cable actuated master for the clutch. I just picked up a suby trany for the svx thats going in the 914. I am going to use all suby hydraulics, master/slave. I found on the vanagons and jeeps when you start changing one end it effects the other.

So you are useing the pull clutch? right?

Im going to make a mounting bracket that holds the master and the end of the cable. attach the cable to an arm that pushes the master and in turn pushes the cluch in. All back at the tranny, no cutting or welding to the body.

I have the Tilton pedals in mine, using short M/C's for both clutch and brake, but damned if I can remember which right now. It'll come to me. There's more information in my build thread, link in my sig. Clutch works great, but the larger brake size leaves me with way more pedal pressure than stock.

Edit: I remember now, Howe M/C's, the shortest out there, so they'd fit in the footwell without cutting any metal and still provide sufficient (max) leg room. I did use a nicely bent banjo fitting on the slave cylinder for clearance. It's been a while though, and don't remember right now where it came from, but again, it's mentioned in my build thread.

Posted by: jpnovak Feb 16 2013, 08:39 PM

Ron, I used a Honda application for my MC. drilled a secondary hole next to the brake booster, built a 90 deg tab and welded it to the floor in the steering tunnel. Let me check the notes and see what the part number is. I had to make a connection rod that went from the stock cable trunion to the MC operating "pin".

The biggest problem I see with this conversion is the location of the slave cylinder. It is top center on the transmission. I do not think it will clear the center tunnel or more importantly the rear suspension cross member/shock tower. It sticks up quite high. Since I cut the rear truck out of the 914 there are no clearance issues.

Is the 901 showing problems yet

Actually the wrx slave cylinder sits lower and behind the clutch rod. It is the same pull to release as the 915 porsche boxes. The rest of the sbarus use a push style clutch and the slave mounts in front of the arm.

d914: yep, ive seen the video of how the Todd at subaru gears cuts down the case to make it essentially like a 915 so it turns out like this

IPB Image

ill look into the sub cv to 930 mating but may end up being close to same price to cut down the 930 axle/respline and get a cv for the tranny. good option though thanks

i'll look for some photos that you are referencing w regard to installing a hydraulic clutch.

DBCooper:
LOVE your build! it was a frequent reference during planning and build. Good to know about the tilton and the howe masters. does the pedal positioning feel the same as the stock pedals ie L to R offset?

Jamie:
hey man, miss talking to you. when you gonna be in SJ again, we should try to hook up again. you planning on the treffin this year? ive got an empty seat if you want.
-Interesting your Honda MC set up, do you have pics? i'll try to search for your build thread so i can visualize it.
-The stock slave is bolted to the top and is a push style but i was thinking of dumping that slave for a Wilwood and mount it as a pull from the other direction like DBCooper
IPB Image
-I've been somewhat gentle to the 901 in first. It's never leaked since I've resealed it at the time in put in the 914 3/4/5th gears but no there is a very slight leak at the intermediate plate so it must be feeling it on WOT pulls in 2nd when she is pulling like a freight train.

a914622:
the 2010 wrx is a ty758 and the clutch slave is mounted to the top so its facing the transmission bell housing to "Push"
here is a shot of the tranny but i dont think you can see where it mounts. i'll try to get a better pic later

thanks again to everyone for the assistance.

btw, i did forgot to give a big thanks to Britain Smith for all his advise on the install and getting the electrical up and running with the stock ecu/harness. piratenanner.gif pray.gif

Looking great Ron!

Posted by: jpnovak Feb 18 2013, 09:20 AM

I did not realize that the transmissions were so different. I am using a late 90s Impreza/GC8 (forrester) transmission. the slave cylinder is on the top next to the starter.

My slave is a push style. I have some pictures of the bracket I made. I will get them up later tonight.

Ron, I was in SJ two weeks ago. I would have called but I was there less than 24 hours and there was no time for any fun. sad.gif

Posted by: RonW Feb 18 2013, 01:13 PM

no worries jamie, im sure we'll hook up again soon

here is a video identifying some of the differences between the pull vs push type release. in 2008-2010, subaru switch the wrx 5 speed in a few ways.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=gJ_96JZhJmI

1) from a pull type to a push like the 2nd tranny in the video
2) the output axle in the wrx in the video ty754 has the axle attached to the diff in side but in the 2008 to the 2010 the small stub axle is part of the CV assembly so it just slides in. to use the subarugears adapter flanges, the small stub axle from the earlier needs to be installed into the diff.
3) the speed sensor was moved off of the transmission and is on the hub at the wheel with a trigger wheel/sensor located there. so i'll just run the same set up i am running now with a trigger wheel bolted to the inboard CV along with the vr sensor

here is the pedal cluster that DBCooper is using that I'm considering. looks like i wouldnt have to do any cutting in my 912, just do the same pedal board and move it far to right so brake and gas are in the same relative position

Is that the same speed sensor I am using Ron? They work great.

The pedal assembly works good as well. I use tilton master cylinders for the brakes and a Howe Racing one for the clutch.

Ron, car looks fantastic!

About your 5-gauge pod, what did you use to hold the A/F ratio gauge in there? I have a 911 dash for my 914 and want to do exactly what you did instead of having the clock there.

Thanks

Yep same sensor!
I need to get in pedal box area and make take some measurements and see how it will fit. I know it will be different and take some getting use to im sure.

thanks for the kind words. i gutted the non functioning clock. I gently pried from the back of the black bezel ring and it came off. removed the glass, removed the guts then used a scrap piece of black textured ABS plastic to fit within the bezel and mounted the ARF gauge to it. ran the wires thru the back of the clock body. reinstalled the bezel to the clock body and recrimped the bezel in place. then the clock body just mounted as it did before. cost = $0.00 welder.gif

Sorry, I can't help but I will say your car looks like lot of fun to drive and very well put together.

Posted by: RonW Mar 16 2013, 09:35 PM

first off, thanks for all the positive comments, must appreciated but only way this car ever came to being was due to helps from guys like you sharing info!

first day ax here in pca-ggr for the season and had a blast. fast course but got to stay in second all the way around (8k rev limiter)! i mounted the WAIC radiator in back and was hoping it would keep the IAT's down. I used the Tactrix connector to the OBDII port and was able to datalog on the micro SD card. Even after getting a re run at the end of the day so basically hot lapped it, the temps were mostly in the mid 70's on only breached 80 for a short duration and ironically, never under high rpms (ie 6-8k) but more around 3-4k and quickly dropped back to the 70's.

trannys weaping at the intermediate case so i'll have to get moving on the suby tranny sooner than later.

anyway, here was my last run of the day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=OsZ4F1cwgeA

got a chance to hang with Britain and is partner in crime Alan the night before and check out his rig, fucking sweet! and the aero is just as impressive. Brit offered me a right but it would have been Gangnum style sitting on the rear deck lid holding the B pillar of he cage, ya, no thanks <insert gangnam emotocon here> watching them drive that car was equally impressive! way to put down some times guys. great seeing you again and hope to see you at a future event soon.

Time to start on the TY758 WRX tranny. Here are a few shots taken during the tear down, pretty simple, lots of case through bolts, only 4 internal bolts, a few love taps and she opened right up  . Btw, the new LSD pictured is a factory JDM unit and will receive the Subarugears reverse ring and pinion and outside will get a 930 to Subaru flange.

Finished up trimming the new nose cone and plugging it up. Ready for assembly. I wanted to compare my spare 4 speed 901 before I gave up on the 901. It nearly identical!!! Overall, Bell hosing face to tip of shift rod housing 73.5 vs 74.0 cm (Porsche to Subaru respectively), bell housing face to flange center 16.5 vs 20 cm (Porsche to Subaru respectively). My only fear is the actual position on the shift rod at 10 o’clock vs 6 but I think I'll have it enter above the shift tunnel and have the shift rod above the tunnel as well and make raised platform for the 915/wevo shift tower sit on.

got a chance to start pulling the bearing off the open diff and install them on the LSD keep the matched bearing/race together.
IPB Image

IPB Image

then pull the gears and bearings off the original pinion and install it on the new subarugears pinion
IPB Image

IPB Image

bolted the pinion assembly to the case and used the pinion depth tool and with the original 2 shims, nearly perfect. i'll have to get some gear marking compound to check the pattern this week and install the seals/gaskets

Wow, great work, beautiful car, super fun project. One of my all-time favorite 911 colors, too. Light weight and big horsepower are fun, aren't they? Best possible combination, and any way you can get it it's good.

Posted by: RonW Jun 9 2013, 08:41 AM

thank your for the kind words. it is very fun but always cautions with first gear fearing the worst. hopefully i'll be able to launch and leave a block long strip of rubber biggrin.gif neighbors are gonna love that lol.

Ron very cool 912 do have any pictures of the build...ie the front rad. Set-up etc...

Posted by: RonW Jun 9 2013, 01:34 PM

Thanks oldschool.

So, radiator mounted up front and using the 912 gas tank opening for the exhaust. here was an early stage before i enclosed it and after i put in the fuel cell.

IPB Image

IPB Image

i tigged up some 1.25" tubing with mandel bends to run forward along the pinch seam and connect to motor/rad via the same gates style hose you guys use.

IPB Image

there are 2 spal 14" fans drawing air in via sealed rear mound. this was a complete unit from Ron Davis. the stock ecu control each fan to temps and load situations i selected.

as a note, you NEED to have a bleed line running from the radiator back to the turbo tank otherwise air will be trap in this style of a set up. i am running a -4AN hose front to back for this.

after getting a cheapo hf sheet metal break I finished it off. there were some small gaps but i closed them all off with foil tape and she runs cool and no heat on to fuel cell.

IPB Image

IPB Image

as a side note, that 10 gal fuel safe cell fit perfect and i was able to adapt the stock sending unit (had to trim it down and re solder some internal wires and works with the stock gas gauge.

All I can say is WOW, great looking fabs on this conversion 300 + HP....mmmmi the 912 going to fly.

Congrats

I don't know how I missed this thread earlier. . .

Wow!! Nice job!

You probably have the clutch hyd mc figured out by now, but in case you don't, you may look at the mc Saco makes that fits into the tunnel on a stock aircooled VW. It could probably be easily adapted to your 912. You can do a search about them on thesamba.com.

Again, nice job!

Posted by: RonW Jun 9 2013, 11:37 PM

Hey Nate, thanks. I have not yet decided on the clutch master but just did a little research and that might actually work well but will have to see how throttle rod runs in there so not to interfere, sometimes I really wise I was DBW. I figure one step at a time, get the tranny in and deal with what comes next biggrin.gif

Great Build!!!

For the clutch option, I followed what STRAWMAN used for his suby conversion.

It is in his thread http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=83031&st=100

It works great and is easy enough for a novice like me to copy biggrin.gif

Please post a video of it driving when you get there!

Cheers!

long overdue for update:
I want to get the trans in this winter. Not that the Bay Area gets that cold in winter but I’m a pussy. I decided to start while the gettin is good. I knew I’d be pulling the motor and trans in and out repeatedly to take care of interference and to mock up the trans support and doing this all my self would be quit a chore. Instead, I sourced a dead case that a rod had tried to escape at speed. With that and a disassembled trans case, I found the areas on the rear seat hump that needed massaging with the precision big fcuk'in hammer. After an hour or so of getting out my aggression, I was able to locate were the new hole for the shift rod would enter the cab. The original 901 shifter is in the 6 o’clock position while the suby unfortunately is in the 11 o’clock position and has to go over the torsion tube. Anyway, got it mostly mocked up but still need a few more love taps to be “perfect.”

got wilwood clutch master and slave and will fab on brackets and run the hydraulic line.
still need to figure out the axles but im leaning towards Ians solution with hybrid axle 912 outer cv (i believe same as 914 diameter and spline count) and subaru inner cv. or 930 inner cv cuz i do have the adapter flange. not sure yet, opinions?
finally since i cant run the cable shift as you guys do, will have to run something like this but off set to pass side and hopefully clear the ebrake

Jamie,
they hargett is bank and from what ive read is a pita to still access the ebrake. i already have my wevo shifter and coupler so id rather note fork out more dough, the above elevated platform should be simple to cut and tig up and call it a day biggrin.gif

Dr. Evil,
Thanks for the kind words. I was actually thinking about you and your clinic you had in Napa this weekend. I was tearing into one of my stashes of 901's to harvest a shift for to cut of for an adapter to go between the suby shift rod (16.5 mm diameter) to the Wevo coupler (for 901 shift rod 15mm). work out perfect.

got the trans mount mocked up to use to oem unit. figured out the mounting for the Wilwood hydraulic slave and will hopefully get the fab up a mounting bracket for the Wilwood clutch slave to work with the stock pedal as other teeners have documented.

This is Great Work Ron.
Are you the first in the territory of a 912/Subi4?
I recall Ruf has built a 356/911 POLO.

thanks veekry9, i don't know if im the first but ive only seen the 914 guys crazy enough to do this with P-cars screwy.gif . also lurking around with vw bug conversion forums cuz a thats a subys are becoming quite popular with them too.

What I"m really curious to see is the feel you get with the Subaru transmission compared to the 901. In the 914 and a cable shifter it's a huge improvement, really night and day. I'm not sure if that improvement is more because of the cable linkage, the transmission being a more modern design, or the combination of the two. You're going to remove the cable shifter from the equation, so you'll be able to compare just transmissions, Subaru to 901. I'm curious to hear how it turns out.

If nothing else you'll get ratios that are better matched, and that by itself makes a huge difference in the overall feel of the car. Mismatched ratios are kind of like the car has a personality disorder. Big difference.

Thanks Ron
That made my day.
A lot of questions answered.
It's plain to see the spectacular results.
I have to ask,Big Brakes,Late 911 Suspension?

Posted by: RonW Oct 22 2013, 07:52 PM

dbcooper,
i am excited to see/feel the results too. when i switched to the wevo shifter and their shift coupler and new bushings, as well as upgraded the tranny to wevo pucks, it really helped the 901 but heel toe from 3rd to 2nd is sometimes a bit questionable if rushed. i am confident it will be improved and cruising at 2600 rpms on free way will be much better than 3200 with the 901 for sure.

veekry9,
ive updated to an later model SC front end with bigger brakes and rebuilt the front with all elephant polybronze bushes and fresh bilstein strut inserts, turbo tie rods, later steering rack etc. rear unfortunately is still '68 smaller calipers but so far for ax, its been fine.

The 72 914 I havewas produced without them,
so I will do the Later stock install shortly as I have all the

sounds like a very fun project you have which is about to go under the knife to make even more fun biggrin.gif

yes, Tarrett front and rear. the front unit has been on for some time but the rear is sitting awaiting install. they wevo brackets the Tarrett bolts to in the rear need to have some fiddling before i can weld them to the chassis because the chassis pinch seam is in the way and was not the case for later 911's. i'll get that install after the rest of the brackets are fab'ed and axles made. leaning towards using the Subaru to 930 flange i have and run the 930 cv's vs subaru cv's. still debating.

Received an order of OEM hardware to bolt the flywheel and pressure plate and clutch disc alignment tool as well as proper bolts for the transaxle to motor. Bolted everything together and slide everything back in place. Needed to trim here and there around the stock suby starter and for the stock suby clutch slave. Looks like she was born there. Made a little adapter to connect the Subaru shift rod to the Wevo shift coupler so I can use the Porsche shift rod (will likely need to be shortened slightly though). I’ll start on the pedestool for shift tower soon. Started in next project…new pedal cluster for hydraulic clutch and improved braking biasing. Need to make a run to get some material and start fabricating!

btw, if anyone is planning on putting a suby in their car and wants to keep their 901, ive got my conversion plate, conversion flywheel, and stage 2 clutch/pp for sale. <1000 miles of use, normally $1200, yours $900 obo +shipping and any pp fees.

finished up the shifter pedestool, Tilton pedal cluster mount and modifying the shift rod. need to order 930 CV's then take measurements for 930 to 912 axles and place an order with Sway Away next week. i think the spline count and diameter of the 912 is the same as the 914 but not 100%

Man...I keep going back/forth about the Tilton pedal cluster. seems like it'd be a little cramped in the 914, but honestly the 912 looks even more cramped!

Great build man.

Posted by: RonW Nov 18 2013, 08:56 AM

For reference, I am 5' 9" and medium build and in the same seat w the OEM pedals I felt most comfortable in the most forward position and w the Tilton, I'm one maybe two seatings back and don't feel cramped at all.

Nearly done plumbing and ordered a custom throttle cable from pegasus which i'll have to add an 8mm barrel to one end because they don't apply have them and i'll run it thru the tranny tunnel to a bracket and attach to the tilton.

getting down to a few final details I've been curious about whether 912 axle splines are the same as 914. If anyone has them around, I'd be much obliged if they could post up.
912:
spline count 25
outer diameter 27.2 cm
inner diameter 25.5 cm

I'm prepping info for a custom pair, 930 inner spline and 912 outer and
total length 38.5 cm
or suby inner and 912 outer, not 100% yet

been a while lurking and wrenching until i had anything to really substantial to post

-rented a brake flare tool from FedHillUSA and enough lines and fitting to essentially redo all the brakes lines. got the Cunifer stuff which is so easy to work with.
IPB Image
IPB Image

-got a set of VB911R rear calipers and Porterfields all around from Eric at PMB, things are sweet.
-designed a VSS trigger wheel since 2011 trans stopped using the internal one to the tranny of course... headbang.gif
IPB Image

-had Mario and the dubshop laser cut it for me and then tig it to the boot flange
IPB Image

-lubed and bolted the 930 CVs and Sway away axles up
IPB Image

-fund a early '66 single master reservior and ran 7mm hose to the masters
IPB Image
IPB Image

-filled the trans with Motul 300 75-90wt

-bleed the system and since wife and kids were out of town, no one around for a leg work out to pump for me so i got a Motive and love that thing.

-burped the coolant system, pita

-turn the key and she started up after her winter slumber biggrin.gif To my delight, clutch engaged, went into gear and pulled right out. but after a few feet i heard a POP and i stopped, pulled forward and POP again, i thought $HIT i broke a cv! what happened was some bubble wrap that the calipers were shipped in were under the car when i was pulling out happy11.gif

anyway, slow short jaunts around the hood and everything seems to be fine. gonna have to get use the the shift pattern now lol the trans shifts oh so buttery smooth!!! just a nudge and click, click, click.

at this point, the only thing i'll need to redo is the brake masters. they are too big of a bore and the pedal is just too heavy and almost no stroke. im currently running 13/16" and i think i'll drop it down to 7/10" and that will give me better pedal feel i think with the 48mm piston SC calipers fronts and 38mm piston caliper VB911R rears.

Thanks for posting it .

Thanks man, lots of fun so far. Starting to venture farther and push her harder smile.gif
Been pm'ing DBCooper and decided to order 5/8" bore masters because of the significant amount of pedal so I'll report back on the differences.

Is there a way to NOT hear the blow off valve?
A muffler of sorts?

Also, could you please show details of pyour radiator?
Curious about venting, fit etc...and plumbing.

One could set it up so you would not hear much of the BOV. My BOV however is vented to atmosphere, hence the whoosshh. When/If i get tired of it, i can port it to vent to the inlets side of the turbo. that would 'muffle' the whoosh.

Regarding the radiator, check post #22, i have photos of the rad mounted and how its exhausts. then i enclosed it so it would keep hot air out of the truck area. it vents thru the stock 911/912 gas tank area. essentially no cutting except for two 6"x12" holes in the nose and the holes in the front bumper, kinda like a stock oil cooler opening.

i ran steel tuning along the pinch seem under the car similar to how oil lines would be run

im happy to more details for clarification.

one thing ive been psyched about is no leaks from motor or trans...sure the whoosh puts a smile on for sure, but the little things like a drip free floor just does it too biggrin.gif

DBCooper: reporting back and the swap of the master cylinders to a 5/8" bore feels much better. longer though and much less effort.

edit: too spongy sad.gif gonna go back.

Good to hear. My masters are Howe because they're the shortest, leaving the most legroom. I'm 6-3, size 13 shoes, so need it. Unfortunately Howe doesn't make a 5/8" version so I need some other solution. They've said they might be able to make me a custom one (I need to follow up) which would be easier than moving the pedals. We'll see.

I think you'll like that longer throw. My younger son races bikes, and have you ever seen the sportbike guys do stoppies? They have the same, what they call a "long lever," that gives them so much control they can stand the bike on the front wheel with the front brake. So there is a longer stroke but with a lot more control.

Rich, you can simply route the blowoff back into the intake, no big deal. I can still hear it a bit through the air filter but it's pretty muted. I could muffle it further, I guess, but it's not nearly irritating enough to make me feel I need to change anything.

Anyone heard from Ron lately?

I want to see this in person.

Matt,
I'm lurking wink.gif Thanks for the kind words. I've since installed front/rear calipers from Eric and done a corner balance in the garage along with string alightnment. Drives great and love the trans. Did my first AX with it this past Sunday in Marina but lots of work to do on the drives skill level and need to play with my set up, some push on turn in and a little bit of 3 wheeling on hard/fast right hand turns. Gonna have a pow wow with a friend who I respect to give me some suggestions. It just keeps getting better and better biggrin.gif hopefully my driving will too.

Right on! I think you should bring her out to a meet one of these days. Would love to see it in person.

Did you set this up with the intent to race, or street track?

Pushing into the corner is usually pretty easy to solve.

well, not really. I just used the stock oem motor cross member and trimmed it front to back but about 1/3. then used 1-5/8" DOM tubing that run up towards the chassis just inboard (in the engine bay) where I had welded in a bracket to bolt it to.

No, sadly no teener, I must be getting old, ended up scoring a well sorted 964. The wife loves it cuz its got AC and sound deadening and Recaro race buckets. Happy wife is a happy life wink.gif
