Who is making the triple oil/oil/fuel gauge?

beerchug.gif

Posted by: DBCooper Mar 7 2013, 08:02 AM

It was Mark (Marks914), then he moved it over to www.newvintageusa.com. I think I heard that they're not doing them any more, or maybe they could but only as a special order. There was a thread in the Vendors section.

Posted by: michael7810 Mar 7 2013, 08:23 AM

Palo Alto speedo and North Hollwood speedo were doing them also.

Posted by: JmuRiz Mar 7 2013, 08:47 AM

Yeah, what he said....but they are $$ compared to what Mark used to offer the 4-gauge for. I REALLY should have bought one when he was selling sad.gif

Maybe someone can convince him to do another run of the quads....

Posted by: Mark Henry Mar 7 2013, 09:19 AM

I wish someone would just print a custom face or some kind of UV proof decal kit...I could do the rest.

Posted by: r3dplanet Mar 7 2013, 11:46 AM

This comes up regularly now. Many of us would love a triple or quad gauge. Who among us has the necessary manufacturing access and skills? Whoever it is, I am jealous of that person.

Posted by: Cairo94507 Mar 7 2013, 05:21 PM

I know I will be needing some gauge work for my Six. I want to add the fuel gauge into the tach (like a turbo boost gauge) and then have a triple gauge for oil pressure, oil temperature and voltage.

I like the quad gauge but it looks a little crowded for my taste thus the fuel gauge going into the tachometer.

I have one of Mark's quad gauge setups in my V8 conversion car (works great, BTW). The down side is that the oil pressure part of the guage (which is at 9 o'clock) partially is obscured by the steering wheel.

I have only a few kits left. I made the mistake of posting on Pelican and sold/built several recently. Let me know if you want one. I'm running out of kits and when they are gone, they are gone. MarkS is the one who worked with me to get the lettering worked out once and for all. Then he kept using my artwork. I really didn't care as he wasn't using VDO parts in his and they just didn't look right to me.

These are/were kits that you assemble (or pay me to assemble if you provide the donor gauges).

Here are the instructions:

Attached File  Triple_Gauge_Kit.pdf ( 322.12k ) Number of downloads: 570

Do PDFs' not work correctly as attachments? Anyone get the PDF to display? I can't see it to make sure it worked. confused24.gif

Posted by: JmuRiz Mar 7 2013, 09:48 PM

I can see it, and my 'home computer' is a phone.
I may have to get in touch with you soon about one...don't really care about a voltmeter anyway.

I've never been able to download .pdf files from 914world.com. It's not scientific, but over time I've seen many others complain that they cannot download / read them either.

For example, I can't download your instructional .pdf file using any browser on any of my computers.

Sad.

Hi John,

Could you pm me what it would cost to build a gauge like yours but using #'s for the temp/oil press. (like the 69-73 style gauge). Also the parts that I would need to supply you. It would be going into my 70 914-6 with a 2.7 RS..

Thanks,

Luke

Posted by: John Mar 8 2013, 07:54 PM

Guys, I've been flooded with PM's and I need to check to see what EXACTLY I have left.

The latest order I have is to a gentleman in Luxembourg for (2) assembled kits. He supplied the donor 914 fuel gauges and the 911 Temp/Press gauges.

The kits are $120.00 each and assembly of donor gauges is $60.00 each kit.

So, to answer many questions, a completed triple gauge from me would cost $180.00 plus shipping back to you if you provide me with plug-in style 914 fuel gauge and plug-in style 911 Oil Temp/Press gauge.

Remember, the quality of the completed unit depends on the quality of the donor gauges.

I do not provide numbered Oil Temp face plates and I do not provide oil Press face plates for the 911 gauges. I personally don't feel they add anything except clutter to the finished gauges. The VDO gauges are ok at giving relative temps or pressure, but they are not 100% accurate.

I will be checking in the morning exactly how many more kits I can offer for sale, but I really feel that I need to give Joe, (the original poster of this thread) the first right of refusal. I have dealt with him in the past and I feel that I owe it to Joe to give him that right.

Thanks for your interest,

John

Posted by: Harpo Mar 8 2013, 08:09 PM

Please add me to the list for a kit and I would like you to assemble it for me.

Thanks

David

Sweet!!! I need to think about one of these for my GT Clone..

Posted by: Luke M Mar 9 2013, 08:10 AM

John,

If you haven't already, add me to your list also.
I have some of the parts/gauges needed to complete this.
I'm waiting to get in the 911 donor gauge.
I'll wait to hear back from you on how many kits that you have available.
Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Luke

Posted by: sixnotfour Mar 9 2013, 08:20 AM

Me also on the list thanks

Posted by: 396 Mar 9 2013, 10:12 AM

Pm sent...count me in for one.
Thanks

Posted by: Steve Mar 9 2013, 12:07 PM

I will take a kit if they are still available.

Posted by: John Mar 9 2013, 12:46 PM

I only have parts available to offer (5) kits.

So far, I have received PM's from:

1. Cairo94507 (confirmed) (cancelled 3/14-2013)
2. rcktmn247 (confirmed)
3. clapeza (confirmed) (paid)
4. michael7810 (confirmed) (paid)
5. r3dplanet (confirmed) (paid)
6. Steve <--- Next in line (contacted)
7. dereknle
8. JmuRiz
9. dfrank
10. Justin Fischer
xx. Craig Downs (it appears as if I owe him one from way back and not included in the (5) available kits. He will be receiving his when I get his address)
11. 0396
12. Harpo
13. Luke M
14. sixnotfour
15. 02loftsmoor
16. jbachert

That is (11) eleven parties that showed interest. This is the order that people inquired, but with only (5) available, I have to narrow down the list.

The original poster, Joe O'Brien has not responded with any interest, so here is the deal, I will offer the remaining (5) kits for sale in order that they sent me PM's.

The price is $120 plus shipping per kit. If you send me donor gauges and want me to assemble the kit, I will return a completed gauge for $180 plus shipping.

If you are still interested, please PM me by noon Central time on Monday 3/11/2013 to make the list for the last (5) kits. I have not investigated making more of these kits, but if enough interest is there, I can see if another run is feasible and what the costs will be which will set pricing on any future kits that I may happen to be made.

EDIT: Even more names added to the list.....

Posted by: Harpo Mar 9 2013, 12:51 PM

I did not realize that you had to PM you John. I responded to this post on March 9th not that it will make any difference. Please add me to the list

My apologies, but I have more people interested, than kits, and this isn't my thread. It looks like I hijacked it. My apologies to the Admin.

I'm not on the list but want to be. Maybe you missed my earlier post on here. I sent you a pm to be added on the list.

I put a PM for a tiple gauge kit

Posted by: John Mar 11 2013, 07:05 PM

All of the first 5 responders have confirmed that they want the kits, so I'm sorry to say that they are all spoken for at this point. However, if the rest of you will kindly confirm that you do want kits or assembled gauges by sending me a PM, I am considering making another run of these kits. I need to put pricing together and I will need some time. I'm guessing I can get pricing and lead time together in a few days. At that time, I will make an attempt to estimate a lead time to complete the new run of kits. Hopefully, I will be able to hold pricing where it is at or only slightly higher.

Please stay tuned.

Posted by: JmuRiz Mar 11 2013, 07:52 PM

Cool deal, thanks for the updates...I'm in if you make another run of them (but you already knew that:) )

Posted by: Luke M Mar 12 2013, 07:21 AM

John,

What would the kits include ?
I'm trying to figure out if I can do this or just pay you to take care of it.
Is there a core gauge/parts that you would need and if so which ones?
I'm in for 2 gauges for sure, so keep me on the list.

Posted by: scotty b Mar 12 2013, 09:12 AM

John, add me to the list of wants if you do another run.

Also, would you still do the silver dot if we provide the necessary parts ?

Posted by: JmuRiz Mar 12 2013, 10:04 AM

Good point, I was wondering how some have the dot and others don't...

Sorry I didn't do a better job of introducing myself to the forum with my first post, but a friend of mine pointed me here for the three-way gauge kit so I won't have to butcher the dash of my 3-gauge 912!

I don't have a 914 yet, but my interest was piqued by a ride in a hot 2.7 on an autocross course- what a rush!

email on the way!

I will take one. Will send a PM

Posted by: clapeza Apr 14 2013, 08:23 PM

Anyone from the original 5 remaining kits got theirs yet?

I was in the original group, got confirmation from John that I made the time cut-off, sent payment, got confirmation from him that he got the payment, and he said he was sending the gauge kit out later in the week.

I haven't received anything. I've sent him multiple PMs, with no response. His member listing says he hasn't been active in about 10 days.

I'm not trying to suggest he ripped me off. He's been a member here for a long time, and has a good reputation, and I believe he has a quality product. Has anyone had contact with him? I understand life happens, but I'd like to know if I'm going to get my kit sooner or later...

Chester

(of course, posting this usually means mine will show up tomorrow!)

Posted by: r3dplanet Apr 14 2013, 08:36 PM

Two weeks ago I sent him a PM asking what was up, and he told me he would ship that or the next day. It never showed up.

I'm a touch vexed. It's been five weeks now. I know better than most how life gets in the way, but if it were me I would find some help to make good on my promises.

Still nothing. Two more messages ignored. And his profile shows that he's been here recently and has therefore read and ignored my messages.

That's $125.80 down the the damn tubes.

I also found out when I went to initiate a resolution with PayPal that if you send money as a personal gift, you're not allowed to resolved anything with them.

This teaches me that all transactions I make via PayPal to sellers or vendors here get paid for goods, regardless of their desire. I think others should be aware of this since so often sellers here want you to pay them as a gift so they don't pick up the charges. Well, now I know the downside to that.

Just a touch pissed.

I'm so pleased that "you have a life." It must be a thoroughly rewarding one if it so completely occupies every minute of every day that it was just too engrossing to locate a stamp and stick it on a package.

John,
Could you show us rotated vs. non-rotated just to clarify? Also, are you doing any restoration to the bezel and glass or just pulling them off and putting them back on?

Posted by: John Sep 4 2013, 08:40 AM

Ask and you shall receive.

Non Rotated Number Gauge:

Rotated Number Gauge:
Attached Image

The difference in cost is $30

For USA addresses, the costs (including shipping and Paypal Fees)

Kit = $132.00
Assembled with your later model donor gauges = $200.00

Add $30.00 to either for the rotated number gauge faces.

______________

When I remove the ring and glass, I clean the glass (I use the glass from the 911 donor gauge) and if the ring is rusty or cruddy, I respray that to make it look very nice when completed, I have also been applying glycerine to the rubber seals as it brings back some of the flexibility to the rubber.

Posted by: ConeDodger Sep 4 2013, 10:26 AM

Thanks John. One late gauge on the way. Rotated please! biggrin.gif

Shipping will be to McOriginal McCustoms...

I'll send a core along too. I'd like you to harvest the silver button and install it on the late gauge... Keep the rest for parts.

Posted by: scotty b Sep 4 2013, 10:30 AM

John do you want us to go ahead and send you gauges now, or will you let us know when you are ready ?

Also might be good to clarify exactly what gauges you need, for both silver dot and non silver dot

Posted by: Luke M Sep 28 2013, 09:07 AM

I finally got my gauge kit installation done this morning.
Took some time to install the kit (about 6 hours) but it wasn't too bad.
I just had to work slow so not to mess things up.
If I had to do it again I would pay John to do it.
You need two gauges to make one kit work.
A late 914 fuel gauge and a 911 oil temp/press gauge is needed.
I also opted for the rotated #'s plates.
Then just follow John's instructions for the install.
I soldered the bulb holders, then reinforced them with JB Weld also.
Over all I'm very happy with the gauge. Here's a few pics.

John do you want us to go ahead and send you gauges now, or will you let us know when you are ready ?

Also might be good to clarify exactly what gauges you need, for both silver dot and non silver dot

Scotty (and anyone else interested),

My kits are set up to use later model 914 gauges. When looking at the backs of gauges, later model gauges will have round black connectors that have three (3) spade connectors and a nut in the middle of the black plug. The black plastic plug has embossed in it (+) corresponding to a +12 volt wire, a (G) corresponding to the wire from the gauge sending unit, and a symbol designating ground that corresponds to a brown ground wire.

Early gauges have individual wire "pass-through" connectors each with a spade lug. (I can not use these types of gauges).

Both the 914 fuel gauge and the 911 combo gauge need the black round plugs in order to be used with my kits.

For a plain black face (no silver center disc), you simply need any donor gauges that fit the above description. For a silver center disc, you need to provide at least one donor gauge with the silver center to be re-used with the kit.

I have shipped out (just today) all of the orders that I had in-house. I still have kits available and can assemble them if that is what you want, but please note, these are a bit time consuming and I am slow, but they do come out nice. My wife is making me increase my assembly fee, but I still don't want these to get too expensive.

Current pricing: (10/15/2013)

Kit (without numbered/rotated face plates) = $131 (including shipping and paypal)
numbered/rotated gauge face plates = $39 (including shipping and paypal)
Kit with numbered/rotated gauge face plates = $162.00 (including shipping and Paypal)

Assembled kit without numbered/rotated gauge face plates (you supply donor gauges) = $220 including shipping and Paypal)
Assembled kit with numbered/rotated gauge face plates (you supply donor gauges) = $251.00 including shipping and Paypal)

Please PM me if you are interested.

Thank you,

John

That's rich. I'm not about to take lessons on civility or social acknowledgements from someone who flat out ignored all of my private and e-mail messages after payment was made.

I'm so pleased that "you have a life." It must be a thoroughly rewarding one if it so completely occupies every minute of every day that it was just too engrossing to locate a stamp and stick it on a package.

Yes, the kit arrived. After ten weeks.

I waited a very long time for mine since he started thinking on doing these. I'm so happy to have mine finally and since nobody else is doing these it was worth the wait to get it. It was fun to put it together although a lot of work (everything had to be modified) but I really enjoyed doing it. Btw the instruction are very detailed and helpful and made it easy to do and the quality of the pieces are 1st class.
Thank you so much John for doing these.

Patience is indeed a virtue. My patience was tried and tested but in the end perfection can't be rushed. Behold my new triple gauge

Thanks again

PM sent for two assembled rotated gauges, but I included the old, wrong price. Understamd $251 each with late gauge donor.

Will send a corrected PM

Thanks

John,

Please refer to pictures via our emails to understand the format of utilizing " my " gages format ( euro type) vs what I received - USA format which does not represent euro scale. Thanks

Folks,

Thanks for the feedback.

Just so that everyone is crystal clear on this:

The ONLY rotated numerical gauge inserts (TEMP and PRESS) that I offer are:

0-5 - for Pressure
120-300 - for Temperature

There exist some 911 gauges that read 30-170 (in centigrade) that I don't have materials to offer rotated. There also exist 0-10 BAR as well as 0-140 for pressure and I do not have materials for those either. If you ask me to provide rotated number plates, I provide what I have to offer.

I use the best glass from the best gauges that are provided to me. The glass is cleaned and installed in the gauge that is sent back to you. Each set of donor gauges is kept separate from other orders so that the instruments sent to me are the ones you receive back. I don't have a pile of gauges sitting around here (nor do I want one).

I try to do the best I can with what I am provided.

I really need to get this thread moved to the member/vendor section sometime...

John

John,

Please allow me to clearify so others will not be in my situation.
I sent you the first euro gage and then a corrected - late 914 gas gage as the first one did not have the 'round' plug.
My understanding was that one would simply 'take' existing 911 temp / pressure gage, and attach a 914 gas gage 'to' your three gage face plate...see Luke M posting for example.
I asked if you can label pressure with druck ( german for pressure ) too.
You responded - yes.
What I received back after your install was a USA gage with druck for pressure....I'm looking for the original 'euro' format. Not to mention, the black bezel is pitted and repainted - as mine was perfect.
Please review your emails for clearification and pictures of what I sent you.
If I wanted a USA gage - ya your would is great. Please help.

Thanks

0396,

I believe that we have this resolved via PM's and that you will be sending me back your gauge and I will install your original 0-10 BAR and 30-170 DEG C non-rotated face plates and send back to you as we discussed in our PM exchanges.

There seems to be some confusion about these kits that should be cleared up if the instructions were available.

I attempted to post a copy of the instructions way back on page 1, but I will try again here. If you are interested in either a kit or to have me assemble a kit for you, please read the instructions to see what is required and what is involved. If you can't download the PDF instructions, I can E-mail them to you.

Attached File  Triple_Gauge_Kit.pdf ( 322.12k ) Number of downloads: 52

The kits require 2 donor gauges.

Gauge 1; 914 Fuel Gauge (with a round black plastic connector 1973?-on)

Gauge 2; 911 Oil Pressure / Temperature (with round black plastic connectors 1973?-on)

I apologize for any confusion, but I am trying to get any confusion cleared up.

Thank you for your interest.

Awesome, I need to get of my lazy butt and get the parts I need from my friend and send out for building...no excuses now that I have my car back (well no valid ones biggrin.gif)

Question, how many illumination bulbs are needed, I may buy some LED bulbs for when I actually send in to get my triple made?

Heck, I'm not even sure how many illumination bulbs are needed for the speedo and tach.
