End of June, I'm showing my car in the concours on Monday June 24. I live in Cadillac, 40 miles away. No other plans for the rest of the week, but I should at least have some 914world people over for a barbecue or something!

Anyone else going?

Paul

Posted by: rnellums Apr 12 2013, 08:59 PM

I'm planning to go up for the concours weekend, but probably not much after Tuesday.

This is my fave spot in Mich, for those of you going. Take some time to see the

area. Take a ride all the way up the peninsula to the very end , where the Grand

Traverse Bay meets the lake. The sunset or sunrise there ,lets you know there is

Looking forward to the Parade! I thought it may not be that we'll attended, but it's been already been oversold on hotel rooms, so looks like folks are coming.

My wife and I went to the last Parade up there (many years ago), and remember the area with fond thoughts. She's already checking out wineries to visit, and I'm looking forward to bringing my freshly rebuilt 914-6 up there. Don't know about the Concours, but the Car Corral is a nice place to wander around. I think there should be a nice turnout of 914s there.

Getting closer. Anyone wandering up into the Big Mitten?

Leaving tomorrow AM for the start of the Journey. Heading to Stoddard, NLA for the Car Show and Swap then flying back home. Then, flying back to Cleveland to drive the rig to Traverse City.

Hi Eric,
Travel safe and see you at Parade.
BTW: My 914 is at a local shop for a safety/mechanical/electrical checks along with a minor tuneup. They just called and said it will be ready late next week or later hissyfit.gif This leaves me little time for my buff and clean time, Grrrr I hate delays. I was thinking about renting a U-Haul trailer & tow it with a SUV Ford Explorer. I just leaned U-Haul has banned the Explorer due to a 2-3 year old laysuit. Looks like I'll have to drive the 260 miles to TC then another clean & buff for the concourse. hissyfit.gif CW life is not fair. smash.gif hissyfit.gif icon8.gif

Looking forward to seeing your beautiful 914. Are you driving to Parade or on a trailer??? It's only about 60 miles ++--.
I checked the long term forcast on weather & looks like low sunny 70's during the day and low 50's at night. pray.gif

Julie and I are going up for the week, assuming I can get through the next couple of weeks at work!

I'm hoping to bring my flared 914-6 conversion car (if we can get the rebuilt engine installed in time), but if not I'll bring my trusty old 914-6. Looking forward to meeting some 914World members in person!

Since I'm in a class with less than 1,000 miles per year of manufacture, I think I'm gonna trailer it up there, it's about 40 miles away. BUT I plan on driving it home!!! And on the Eric Shea ride Wednesday morning.

Eric & 914er's.
Lets all sit together at the Tuesday evening banquet dinner along with Eric's other activities??? slap.gif

I am driving my 914 the 260 miles to TC on Sunday morning. I am behind schedule on cleaning due to a heavy work load in business. Buff & Shine is all it gets.

Eric I agree on the side trip to Leland MI.
My story:: We have a summer cottage up-north in Petoskey (hr. drive from TC) that my wife spends all summer while I commute weekends from downstate Plymouth running my business. During "Sweet Black Cherry" season I always stop at road side stands for a big bag of fresh cherry's on my way downstate. I open the roof hatch on my business car and spit with force up in the air hoping to clear the trunk. When I get home I check for cherry stains on the cars rearend and if none, it's a good trip. I smile at myself in the mirror with my purple stained cherry lips. End of story, life is good wub.gif BTW: I never do this with my chrome yellow 914. drooley.gif

Am a resident of Traverse City and have been looking forward to this. Stopped by for a few minutes on Saturday and the lot was full of 'em, but not a 914 in sight. Then within just a few minutes, George pulled in in his yellow machine. Beautiful. Had an opportunity to introduce and talk, what a friendly guy.

Eager to learn a few things. Am a newbie to the 914, with a '72 1.7. Needs much work but is still my daily driver. It's the one in the lot painted rust-oxide primer with the gold Empis.

If you guys are planning an impromptu tour on Monday, I might be interested, depending on the time.

Having a great time at Parade & meeting many of our 914-World friends. I did well in today's judging. In my full restoration class, first place with a 290.8 score in a possible 300 point system. I am very impressed with the PCA 5+ judging team of experts that look in places you never thing to clean. They are fair and give expert opinions. The enjoy looking at 914's. pray.gif

Today Eric Shea's 914-6 GT & my 914-4 twin "Chrome Yellow" lead about 40 newer Porsches on a tour through Northern MI's tunnel of trees to Cross Village. Eric's car was the lead & I was behind him. It was a fantastic tour and we baptised my car in a light rain. First time ever. My goal at Parade was to photo our two yellow cars together and meet many 914-world friends for the first time in person. Mission done!!!!!

Pat is going to loose it! biggrin.gif

I think "already lost" is more fitting!

Hi Paul,
Just a personal note to say your 914 is beautiful and you did the 914 world proud first.gif I heard many concourse people say their first car was a 914 during college & their first Porsche love. They would go on & on about their youth and Porsche. You are now our "official 914 Preservation Man" w00t.gif You did good!!

Paul's car has been christened "Christine".

First about the car... let's just say the judges now have a new benchmark. They weren't really looking for faults or flaws, they were just looking so they knew how to judge "future" preservation 914's to come. This is the benchmark, the high water mark. if you ever find yourself in Michigan and want to see what a 914 would look like when it left the dealer showroom; it's worth the drive to Cadillac.

Now... On to the "Christine" part. I'm certain on the day Paul's car left the assembly line it was mixed in a line of off white 914's. One of the line workers hands was injured when the hood smashed down on it and... Don't even think about going near her with a cigar.

You see; Paul decided he would "drive" this preservation group car yesterday on the tour with us. "Christine" had other things in mind. It think it best I let Paul finish the story. They say a picture (or three) is worth a thousand words.

Tom, that drive with you along the coast of Lake Michigan was a long held dream come true!

Posted by: orthobiz Jun 27 2013, 06:50 AM

Thanks, Tom. For the CW crowd (like Pat, who hasn't logged in for about a week), I forgot to remove the coco mats. I realized this at the beginning of judging and they let me take them out.

Tom gave me a couple of 1974 brochures that I will cherish and will always stay with the car.

In walking up the cement steps after the last bathroom run before the ride, I fell UP the steps. Cement steps. Crisp, pointy big steps. In order to protect myself from injuring my arms I used the bridge of my nose to break the fall. Breaking the nose in the process. And lacerating a few areas around the nose and left eye.

If my car is gonna be Christine, then call me Quasimodo, or Quasi for short.

thisthreadisworthlesswithoutpics.gif comeon... Show the gore!!!

Posted by: orthobiz Jun 27 2013, 07:05 AM

Well, there goes the thread. This is the "before" picture. I mean, "after" falling and "before having my nose set. Glad they took those blue strings out of my nostrils. The other ends felt like they were pressing on my eyeballs!

Most of the gore is on the floor of the church community center. Nary a drop on my vintage Porsche shirt!

What a trooper!

Do us all a favor and go buy another 914. Park Christine in a bubble and go out and have nice talks with her every now and again. Unlike the real Christine, she won't be able to regenerate herself and, you need one you can drive.

Congrats again to Paul, and all of the other 914's!

Now... Where's Mr. Zarbo with his tales of woe?

While on that subject, it really hits home and hits your heart when you see what these 914 people do for one another. I'm always amazed, humbled and blessed to have all of you guys as an extended family.

Richard blew out a fan belt in his barn find six on the way up to TC. No biggy, he grabbed a few tools and we proceeded to do a parking lot swap in front of his room. This is when I developed an odd pain in my abdomen. It did nothing but get worse and before you knew it he was driving me and my Father in my truck to the hospital. A 3-4mm stone ensued but, that's just the commencement here... This was the day before the concours. Richard and I were going to fix the belt and prep our cars together.

Well, those who have had stones before know that I ended up fairly heavily medicated and on my back that night. MY CAR WAS PREPPED AND FINISHED THAT NIGHT BY RICHARD, HIS SON STEVE AND HIS GIRLFRIEND MARIAH!!!! All I had to do was get up in the morning (feeling much better thank you) and drive it to the lawn! We joked (over dinner that night) that they probably did too good a job as he wiped all of the carbon out of the exhaust tips. One of the judges was overheard saying "he should actually tour with it" LOL.

So... Thank you Paul for sharing your car with the world this week. Thank you Tom for the amazing brochures and best of all, that drive in the Northern Michigan countryside that we've been dreaming about and thank you Richard for saving me and helping prep the car for the show. It's truly been an enlightening week.

Thanks 914 guys!

Eric, did that stone pass? or,, are you still waiting for it... yikes.gif

Posted by: Eric_Shea Jun 27 2013, 09:06 AM

I think it passed but I've yet to see it.

Brother's in common @ Parade.
More to the story with Dick Zarbo (Hawk) he took Eric to the local hospital and spent most of the night making sure he was properly treated. Dick is Dr. of Pathology and KD Ward Chair VP of a Major Hospital, Eric was in good hands if he passed away lol-2.gif Hawk is a special friend to us 914er's. smilie_pokal.gif
Eric & I lead the 40+ new/old through the twisties on Tuesday and Wednesday he took a similar group I didn't attend. Eric, my wife saw the group at Spring Lake on Wednesday taking a break and drove through the parking lot (silver SUV) and saw your dad guarding your car. She thought your dad was you and said to me he is an old man, ha ha. I corrected her, I can't say enough about the friendship we share. pray.gif

Paul, Thanks for our new 914 friendship, it will last a long time, now get well.
Thanks to all the other's not mentioned, everyone was special.

My summary of Porsche Parade.
I believe our 914 Parade group has advanced acceptance with PCA's 100K membership for the future of 914's. We had (7) 914's on display and in my opinion we raised the bar with the core group of Porsche members in the Porsche hobby. They talked about finding a 914 for their stable & waxed on about the 914 they used to own especially their 914-6's. Also, met Pete Stout in person after many emails and PCA is in good hands. Pete is putting together a team that is going to set PCA records. Pete is one of us 914er's & we need to support him when he brings about changes to PCA. I was also impressed with the Porsche factory people at the meet. Peter Porsche was there along with an army of higher ups. I am sure they noticed our presence. popcorn[1].gif BTW: Buy the best 914 you can before they go up in price. rolleyes.gif 914's are on a roll. smilie_pokal.gif

My wife and I have been here all week. We have been enjoying Porsche friends so much that I did not have a chance to check this site too.
Got to chat briefly with Eric at the concours. You did a great job on your car. Its a beauty.

Even got to shake hands with Peter Porsche earlier in the week. w00t.gif

Tom Parker got first place in his class in the autocross in his recently restored silver 2.0L. He also showed this in the concours too. Another nice car and fast too.

I took the 914 tech quiz this morning. I will let you know how it went.

Ed Scott

Had the final banquet at the Parade this evening, and a 914er, Ed Scott, took first overall in the Tech Quiz as well. I managed to get a close second, so that was a nice evening.

To cap off the evening, Reliable Auto Carriers gave a round trip certificate to next year's Monterey PCA Parade, which I was fortunate enough to win! Now I have a easier way to get my 914-6 out west for next year's Parade! They also gave away two new Caymens from the member's raffle to two lucky winners, and the traditional trip to Germany sponsored by the Porsche factory!

Nice way to cap off a great week in Traverse City!

Lemme get this straight: they're gonna trailer you to and from the Parade?

George,
Let me know if you have room on board to Monterrey next year. Might be cozier than this years mode of transit I took to and fro the Parade :0
Congrats and it was very good meeting you.

Got back on the PC after a few days of travel back from Parade 2013..... sorry for the delay in Congratulating all the Winners at Concours with their 914's.

We did not have our 2.0 litre with on this Parade, as we drove something a bit more disposable and easier to replace, since we had left in the midst of storm warnings, later to hear 2 inch hail fell and up to 9 inches of rain fell hard on our heels.

The driver/beater 944 made the trip and did so with aplomb, skirting disaster and adding 3,000 miles of uneventful, troublefree miles.....It is not a show worthy car in any sense, but it did us well with loyal service.

Congratulations to all.......
Tom. A pleasure to meet you and view your car as it was judged, all be it from afar as we had to juggle viewing and photo- ing our friend Steve's 73-Grey Beige 911, the 73 Sepia 911 of Candyce, and friend Cory and Deb's beautiful 356 - 4 Cam GT of 63 vintage.
Along with Paul's amazing 914...... We also had a friend's early 901 car that was placed in the Historic section---- Bob's amazing Monte Carlo Tribute, and another region member's first attempt at concouring their gorgeous 944 S2, along with fellow 911S Registry's Ed Mayo and his wonderful silver 911 from Texas.

Try as I might , I never got all the photos of everyone I came to see and support, nor got to spend the time I would have wanted to getting to know everyone personally...... but it was a GREAT and memorable pleasure meeting and speaking with fellow PCA and 914 World friends....

Paul. What can I say ? Hope it all heals well and may you remember the Parade for all its positives.......... I am SO glad we pulled out of the tour group on another run and didn't have to witness the carnage you endured. But really , I would have been there to help had I known what was going on. ( As an aside....... I nearly did the same thing when going into the same building BUT on a different day, as we left for another tour. I think we need to check that stair for proper rise.

Congrats George on winning the trip to Monterey next year with your car from Reliable Transport... WHAT a prize. Just Awesome !

See you all there at the famous tree in Carmel ~
