So, what are the causes of a wigglie speedometer needle?

I just need a list so I can check everything.

I think the head unit is fine.
The cable is newish. . but not routed in the original manner (and I have not checked it, I didn't do it)
Lubing the cable from the top does not help

Thanks

Sean

Mine started acting haywire. It turned out to be the drive unit in the tranny. The liitle shaft in the drive unit itself had sheared.

Same thing with my speedometer. Since the cable was replaced the needle bounces from zero to thirty until the car gets up to about 30 mph.

A kink in the cable, even a relatively small one, is usually the cause of this.
