914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Do you want a tech only forum, too?

Posted by: trekkor Nov 27 2004, 07:10 PM

I really enjoy the features in the Garage, as is.
Sometimes, though, I would like to go straight for the wrenches.
I like to post and read some of the stories and jokes.
It just seems like the "board" gets clogged with a lot of hurdles to the tech on occasion.

Your thought?

Nope. We like everything here.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 27 2004, 07:14 PM

In the past...

The boards all go through a change as people sit on their ass in front of the computer over the holidays. It has been this way since I can recall. The "junk" always goes up from Oct.-Feb. when the weather is crappy for more than 3/4 of the USA/World. When people are building cars during the decent weather months... the tech articles are up over the drivel.

off topic stuff is marked OT:

done....

Posted by: hargray2 Nov 27 2004, 07:20 PM

Cover your head. I suggested the same thing on the peli-crap board. It didn't go over very well. They absolutely blew up over it and criticized me to no end. What a bunch of assholes over there. Expect most to disagree on the idea, but I think everyone will be friendly about it here.

Posted by: Brad Roberts Nov 27 2004, 07:44 PM

This thread is considered off topic..LOL

We only blow up over A-holes who cant watch their mouth a little bit.

My man, I build when the weather is sucky....like now.
When it's decent I'm out...ah...mowing the lawn. sad.gif

With only one type of car that this site has information about I don't know if seperate links is really needed. The other board I belong to for my Dodge Challenger is http://www.hotrodders.com . They have a seperate Bulletin Board link for tech stuff. http://hotrodders.com/forums/
But that site deals with lots of different makes and models. They have seperate links for seperate parts of a cars restoration. Engines, interior, exterior, suspension... It depends on how much time the admins want to put into the site. It basicly comes down to time spent monitoring the different links and navigation on the site.

nope, we don't want to spread it out. everyone should hang out in the garage ...

the more active forums you have, the less participation you have in each.

not gud ...
wink.gif Andy

BTW: we have a "Classic Message Threads" forum with all the important tech threads from this forum plus we have the "914 Info" section ...

Trekkor,

Like we talked about in our PMs, I understand your frustrations about wading through other stuff to find the technical nuggets of gold.

While the off topic chatter doesn't bother me immensely, the thread hijacks can be a bit annoying. Especially when someone decides to comment on every topic... with little to add.

But... the answer to this, IMO, is individual discretion. This is a pretty cool place to hang out... and some non-914 content reflects who we are as a group! smile.gif

I like the garage. I read some of the OT stuff. I sometimes just post a smiley to bump a topic I like to save it from rolling to page 2. Great place, best people. aktion035.gif

There are times when I think a strictly tech forum might be good, but for the most part I think it would be boring. I can scan through things pretty fast to find the stuff I want. I think keeping it all one forum is the best way to go, but I do appreciate you asking the question. We should never act like what we have now is the best arrangement there can ever be.

Posted by: trekkor Nov 27 2004, 11:19 PM

thank you for the replys thus far.

It was lopsided early, then 50-50, now lopsided again.
I guess what I want, is when I post an *important* topic to me, for it to be adressed technically and not become some little boop-boop-ee-doo for any passer by with nothing to say.

I'm here to learn.
Opinions are great. Experience is better. Blah blah, is...well...Useless. unsure.gif

The biggest problem we are going to have with Tech vs Lifestyle (hahaha LMFAO! what a marketing weasle thing to say!)...

IS SEARCHING FOR CONTENT!

Search: Sway Bars :300 hits Hit one:

So, this swaybar walks into a longitudinal repair shop for a valve adjustment, and the rubber seal says......

I didn't vote, it's so political..

This has come up before but this format just seems to work here, I think that is why this board has so many dedicated members.

Check out pelican or any one of the boxster boards. They are lucky to get a dozen posts a day. We get that many in an hour.

Reading about somebody's sick cat while your trying to figure out how to remove your input shaft seal is why I keep coming back. smile.gif

Kepp it the way it is... biggrin.gif

Posted by: DuckRyder Nov 28 2004, 09:22 AM

Well looks like we were solidly out voted.

Andy is right, its better to have fewer forums and the boards I visit that have dedicated forums still have OT stuff in the tech area.

I think that marking it OT (which is done pretty reliably here) is over half the battle.

Posted by: jdogg Nov 28 2004, 09:24 AM

Yep, no need to fix it, it's not broke.

Posted by: Qarl Nov 28 2004, 10:33 AM

No.

Just quit everybody whining and everyone learn to respect one another (and the right for us all to have different opinions).

Posted by: Rhodes71/914 Nov 28 2004, 10:44 AM

If you come here on a regular (daily) basis, which I think trekkor does, most any new topics or new posts to topics will be on the first 2 pages. If that is to much to wade through I'm sorry man.

This forum and the Rupp snowmobile forum are the only 2 that I have been to that have good off topic discussion mixed in with pertinent (sp) tech info.

I like to mix up my reading, a few laughs and a little education all in one place.

Thanks everyone. beerchug.gif

I prefer the one stop shopping of one main board. If you keep up on it on a daily basis it's not that bad. If your looking for advice on a certain concern do a search first.

Posted by: Mark Henry Nov 28 2004, 03:48 PM

As long as you mark it OT I don't care what you post.

Some of the hi-jacks in a true tech thread do piss me off a bit.

cool.gif

Posted by: Aaron Cox Nov 28 2004, 04:05 PM

as long as it says OT, or NWS or NPC i dont care....

whats next... 'politcal forum'? wacko.gif ar15.gif

Posted by: trekkor Nov 28 2004, 04:38 PM

Don't read too deep into this poll. wink.gif

Sometimes I want post a tech question and get tech replies. When people post their unrelated alternate realities that only present themselves as a hurdle to my solution, it can prove to be , well, rather frustrating. headbang.gif

Don't get me wrong, there have been some hilarious posts here and I love it. wub.gif
Also new ideas and opinions are what spark progress in every field.

I'm suggesting a place for just serious tech help.
Obviously, that won't happen, so I'll just keep enjoying things the way they are.

This is not a complaint, just a suggestion.
The forum does work well, as-is I'll admit.

Maybe this will just stir thoughts among the members.
