914World.com _ 914World Garage _ On Topic: Brake MC upgrade question

Posted by: skline Nov 27 2004, 10:51 PM

I got a 20mm Master Cylinder for a 80's SC and was told it will fit on my car. Brad? Any tips on installing this bad boy? Or anyone else out there with any experience in this endeavor?

20mm ? Show a pic of it. The only thing I can think of that might be different is the inlet holes might be in a different location.

Didn't someone recently ask about a M/C with a "20" cast into it that turned out to be a power assist unit?

Oh great, so it may not work at all? Here is a few pictures of different angles. Let me know what this is and if I can use it.

That is for a boosted unit, can't see how it would work.
The only 20mm that normally fits was the one used with the 911 aluminum S calipers. This started with the 69 911S. As soon as they went with power brakes the whole design changed. The original 20mm has been unavailable for a very long time.

There is a factory 19mm master cylinder that will bolt on to a 914. It was used on 911s with the S-calipers. There is also a 23mm Mercedes Benz unit that will bolt onto a 914. You have to do some adjusting to the brake lines to get it on the car. If you use it with stock or slightly upgraded brakes, you will get a very hard pedal and no travel. It would be good for very large, multi-piston calipers.

Well, I have stock rear calipers so I could retain the E brake, I have Volvo 240DL calipers up front which are 4 piston. Currently I have a stock 17mm MC, how do you think it will be like it is?

With that setup, just put the 19mm master cylinder into the car. Your brakes will be fine.
