• 10pm: BBQ complete – continue festivities at motel parking lot. THANKS MIKE AND MARY!!!

Saturday, September 7:

• Stop at Silverton
• Stop at Ouray overlook
• 1pm: Stop in Telluride for lunch and sightseeing (map in attachment) – there are no defined plans so do whatever you want. The gondola is free. There are shops in town. • Stop at Lizard Head Pass
• Stop at Priest Gulch Campground (snack and pit stop)

• 7:30pm: Dinner at Dalton Ranch Golf Club (map in attachment)
• After Dinner: Continue hootin’, hollerin’ and shenanigans at the motel parking lot

Sunday, September 8:
• Depart Durango and head for next adventure (make your own darn breakfast plans! )

Dinner is $25 and if you want a picnic lunch (sandwich, chips, fruit, veggies, dessert) it's $10. You can give me cash or a check at the event, or paypal me gintersm@yahoo.com.

Reservation made, but it sounded like trailer parking may be some what of a bear as the truck and trailer will have be unhooked and parked separately. Has anyone actually seen the facility layout?

Go to google street view and drive around the block. There is a big parking lot next to the motel.

I will book when I get back from Nashville.

I ask about it, she said it does not belong to the motel. Didn't say we couldn't use it, but didn't say we could. Clerk seemed a bit surprised that people might be trailering in some of the cars. Longest trip yet in mine since putting it back together has been about 80 miles and I don't think the wife would like the noise and no a/c for a day. She would rather ride n the truck. Posted by: AZ914 Jun 20 2013, 07:33 AM

Mrbubble...
I'll let Sharon give you the official details, but the RRC is usually a loose, fun, get-together. We usually all roll in on Friday sometime, do a BBQ at the hotel parking lot, sip some adult beverages, shoot the sh*t, etc. Saturday morning, get going on our drive, have lunch about half way, do a little show & shine, continue the drive, chill a bit, then have a dinner/banquet. More parking lot festivities... Sunday morning, maybe some breakfast but people start heading out.

Posted by: SharonG Jun 20 2013, 10:16 AM

Event info updated in 1st post.

Excellent news Amigos! Mike and Mary Moorman are hosting the Friday dinner! They live approximately 7 miles north of the hotel. We were thinking about renting a shuttle depending on interest. Let me know if you'd do the shuttle thing if it was available.

Mrbubblehead:
Jason (AZ914) did an excellent job outlining the event action plan. All the event info will eventually be listed in the 1st thread. The RRC planning team is still ironing out the details. There may be a different thread to order t-shirts once a design has been established, but there will be a link to the ordering thread at the beginning of this thread when it's available.

Posted by: AZ914 Jun 20 2013, 11:54 AM

Bubble.. I have camped at a place called 'United Campground' just north on the 550 from the host hotel. (I just googled it.. 2 miles north) The narrow-gauge railroad goes right thru the middle of it!

Sharon.. Since we are at a driving event, I'd be up for driving the teener to dinner wink.gif

Posted by: shelby/914 Jun 20 2013, 11:58 AM

Try Durango on google maps then put in the motel address and the word camp grounds and I got about 4 pages, of course some were fairly far away but several were within 2-4 miles.

I agree - United is the best/closest to the hotel.

EDIT: United Campground at 970-247-3853. The website states $29/night for tents. And yes - those are the Narrow Gauge tracks right beside it. The earliest train (right now) is 8:30AM at my house so maybe 8:15 at United Campground.

I am taking the South loop to get there, and the North loop to come home.
I would pick up 40 in Kingman. My plan was to hit Flagstaff or Sedona for the night.
I expect Wills and Company will be heading north from Phoenix early Friday morning. I wanted to hook up with them traveling on 40 East - then either 160 or 491 up to Durango. (Both are better suited for a Silverado instead of a Sports Car.)

On the long way home - after Pikes Peak I plan to wind my way back across the scenic routes. Grand Junction or Moab as a stop. I would hit Zion and Bryce on the last leg home.

im just taking the basics. throttle cable, clutch cable and all the pieces, dizzy parts, hand full of tools etc.

I talked to Kelly. Actually he's on his way to my house today in his 914. He said he has his sights set on this event. It would be nice to have a small caravan from points north.

The real question will be not if I make it to RRC 2013. Will I make it in a Corvair powered 914? Then what will it look like when I leave? Here is my starting point (See pic)

My route will take me to Phoenix first for 3 days of golf. Starting Labor day or the day after. Then on to RRC Friday. Sunday off to SLC to see my daughter. Monday drive back home to Oregon. Google maps makes the trip 2996 miles & a minimum of 44 hours of seat time blink.gif . damn a flight out is sounding better all the time evilgrin.gif

Seriously though I hope to get my car ready for the trip. If Rick beats me out for farthest distance traveled in a 914. Maybe I can get the POS914 award first.gif

Well, you told me I have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora. biggrin.gif

Only pinky lifters use shot glasses to mix their Mojitos.

VW drivers pour two to four fingers over ice.

VW-Porsche drivers drink from a red plastic cup or chilled bottle. It is up to the individual whether he breaks the neck off against a solid object.

Sorry gang, I have been waiting for this event all year. We are officially out this year. I was just deployed to Toronto to work. I would have passed but I haven't worked since last December and quite frankly I could use a couple bucks to get through the winter. If we are back before the event we'll have to crash in the parking lot.

Anyone that has a room in another hotel and would like to stay in the host hotel I would be glad to give you my reservation. I booked a double bed room.

That was I-70 over the peaks at Fishlake Nat'l Park area. Between Beaver, UT wub.gif and Richfield, UT barf.gif .

Fortunately, the only place well see snow is Flagstaff as the rest of the trip is thru the Navajo Nation which is DIRT, to the Four Corners area. After that, all bets are off (Cortez, Mancos).

Eric,

I was thinking about that same as Donald. I had no problem with the old motor moving to Durango - but the new motor (to be fired up this weekend) was built and tuned at sea level. Is there a rule of thumb to use as a guide? Maybe change jets by "X" for every 1000' of elevation change?

Fun facts:
• Elevation in town is 6,500’
• Elevation at Red Mountain Pass (part of the drive) is 11,018’
• Gas octane is 91 around here and not 93

This is from 30 minutes ago. We are at the end of monsoon season - where it rains almost daily for 30 minutes in the afternoon. That said we had a storm move through last night at 3:30AM.

Octane requirements drop at elevation because there is less oxygen in the mixture and less effective compression

I have a spreadsheet that gets you dialed in for jets etc. all I need to know is engine size in CC and where your cam makes peak HP.

Posted by: rnellums Aug 24 2013, 12:33 PM

Eric, I would love some of that insight! I've got 2366 cc, peak power probably around 6K RPM, the cam is .521/286 duration.

The carbs I have are 44 IDF's with 36mm venturis. I think i'm running:

200 A/C
F11 emulsion
155 mains
50 idles

That's just another great thing about the 3.2 FI. first.gif Having said that, I had my 914 at the top of Sandia Peak (10,600 ft.) during the Atomic Ramble a number of years ago (2.2 liter type IV with 44idf's), with no problems. And that's when it was jetted so rich I was getting about 18 mpg. Just keep the rpm's up and you'll be fine. I'm not too worried about the mountains in Colorado. I'm just worried about getting there from here. driving.gif 1000 miles. laugh.gif

Hi E,

Displacement is 2143cc

I don't know where it makes its power - it is chipped at 5200rpm right now.

Cam specs:
Lobe separation: 108
Valve lift: .429
Duration: 270

I don't know how the car is jetted now but it was done at sea level using a wideband AFR to properly jet the Weber 40IDF running 32mm venturis.

I will pull the jets, Emulsion tubes, AC tomorrow and look.

Is anyone bringing an AFR? Maybe we could have a clinic - and you can practice on my car! happy11.gif

When we were at Priest Gulch a couple of weeks ago, we noticed signs on the road about construction on CO 145 near Telluride. I could not tell just how extensive it is or how close to town it is because I don't know where the mile markers are.

Right now the Durango - Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad runs right the morning gathering spot at 8:30am and 9:30am. I have permission from the owners to rope off the back row (closest to the tracks) of the lot so there should be a great photo of a line of 914s with the train behind them. I have a friend in the press and he is trying to get a reporter here to do an article on (as he said) "these rare cars".

Jim, if you want lunch, let me know and I'll give it to you at the 9:14am meet up before the drive. We don't have a planned lunch location in Telluride - there's too much stuff to do there and I didn't find a good picnic location close to parking. I figured some folks may want to just hang in town and find a sandwich shop there where they don't have to eat sh!t on a shingle, which is what I'm planning chowtime.gif . Of course - the more the "Mary-er" - (See what I did there?).

If you are in town don't just sit at the hotel. You can come and help get some of the bugs off of Donald's (Hot_Shoe) bumper (he drives at night a lot).

As a matter of fact if anyone wants to come to the house Friday and scrub bugs off their cars feel free to stop in as I will have everything you need to shine your ride (no enclosed trailer queens). biggrin.gif

So much easier than trying to do it in the motel parking lot.

It looks like the COTM won't be at the RRC this year. I got about 100 miles east of Needles and lunched a valve. I made so much smoke on the interstate, there can't be a live mosquito anywhere along highway 40 for miles. AAA towed me on a flat bed most of the way home and my wife met me in Tehachapi with our pick-up, a tow bar and hitch. I got home about 10: 30 this evening. It's been a long hot day and I'm glad to be home but am sorry I won't get to see Durango this year. So now, instead of drinking tequila with the barbarians in the parking lot I gotta start pulling the engine out. Have a good time everyone.
Cheers, (sorta) Elliot

With all the cancellations and your problem, I am now officially nervous. Last time there were so many pullouts, I broke piston ring lands on the six and didn't make it.

Already looking forward to next year. What a great event! Thanks to all for setting this up!

What a great time. Moveqik and I had a great drive back to Phoenix thanks to the cooler temps due to the rain. No problems other than finding another leak in my car during a hard rain. Many thanks to Brant, Sharon, Mike & Mary, and all those who helped with the arrangements. Hopefully next year I won't be on medication that prevents me from drinking.

Posted by: MoveQik Sep 9 2013, 07:04 AM

Ditto what everyone said! And to top off an amazing event, Mike & I were treated to a down right chilly drive home until
The last hour. Never before seen for an RRC drive!

Sharon, Mike, Mike, Mary(and anyone else that helped)- thank you! Jason and Andy - thank you for the awesome stickers and awards.

Interesting drive back from PHX, but not too bad. It seems that on Saturday night, I started losing some gears. Trying to go into first gave me 3rd, .. 3rd gave me 5th. I'm assuming (hopefully) linkage bushings. Luckily I can get the car rolling in 3rd, and kept it in 5th the entire drive.

Thanks to Sharon, Gint, Eric, Val, Mike, Mary, Jason, Andy, Brant and everyone else for putting together and participating in such an awesome event. I am glad that I finally got to make it out west for an event and meet a lot of great people.

Car ran great and all 3000 miles were trouble free (except for thebusted windshield) and I finally made it home about 11:00 this morning after rolling out of Durango about 9:00 yesterday morning. I'm thinking if I make another RRC, it will be by aircraft.

Had a blast and really enjoyed meeting everyone. I hope all made it back home safe and sound and trouble free. beerchug.gif

Unfortunately not, Rick. We're looking at either Moab or something close to Bryce Canyon if we can find something that we won't have to room 6 people per double room to afford the lodging cost. blink.gif beerchug.gif

I would like to thank:

Mike (Gint) for being my silent backup crew. biggrin.gif wub.gif

Mike and Mary Moorman for hosting the best BBQ EVER!!! And for coordinating Saturday dinner (delicious).

Val and Sleepin for coordinating the Saturday lunches.

Sleepin for yet another epic t-shirt design.

Jason (AZ914) for excellent awards!

Brant for coordinating the t-shirt orders and being my admin assistant. biggrin.gif

Andy for the super cool decals (one is on Mike's Audi).

I look forward to seeing all my 914 peeps every year. wub.gif

RRC attendees......thanks for coming to Durango for RRC. Because of this event, I had the great fortune to meet Mike and Mary and now consider them friends along with the rest of the RRC crew. Thanks for the award, NARP. I know she (997) has water in her veins but you can't hold that against her. Great to meet all of you.

Wills and I were shooting around a couple of ideas but nothing solid... Trying to mix it up a bit.

There was talk about a party at Wills house and then a trip up to Pine for lunch where you get burgers with no tomato easily av-943.gif .

How 'bout Phoenix to Payson to Pine to Winslow to Holbrook to Heber to Payson to Phoenix? 313 Miles. Pick a spot to stay the night.

I'm flying to pick mine up in CA later this month and driving back to Michigan over four days. I saw your windshield (ouch!) and found clear duct tape at my FLAPS. I didn't know they made such a thing! I don't want a stone to ruin the ride back!

What a great event ! Had a great time; thanks to Sharon for organizing everything. Thank you Mike and Mary Moorman for hosting Fridays dinner and arranging the site for the awards. Eric and VAl did a great job organizing the trip to Ouray and Silverton. And thank you Mike Wills for the ride Saturday to Ouray. Durango was a fun place to visit, there is much to be seen, and the weather was terrific. As is common at these events, I got to meet members who I only knew as screen names and hear their stories of 914 ownership.

Thanks again. See you next year
