Not going very fast..we need to work out some of the bugs,And my pilot needs some more air time lol

Posted by: IanJ Jul 6 2013, 02:57 AM

When I've looked at ones the can manage 30mph for about 8-10 mins.
I thought it might still be cool for small

Does it have a follow me or was someone controlling it?

What camera does it use?

Posted by: euro911 Jul 6 2013, 05:23 AM

That's cool, Jaime smile.gif

I picked up a small quad last month. I'd like to go FPV when I get the hang of it.

Related, I'm getting tired of the legislative bodies interfering with just about every hobby I have. Who in hell are these people? They sit on their asses every day dreaming up new ways to spoil our fun (and all done on our tax dollars) mad.gif ... They must lead very boring, mundane lives. [/rant]

Posted by: bulitt Jul 6 2013, 05:33 AM

Thats cool! I read where a commercial pilot landing at JFK? or Newark? spotted a drone on his approach. That had everyone asking questions.

Posted by: euro911 Jul 6 2013, 05:45 AM

People are always going to do stupid stuff, but they're trying to outlaw FPV in a lot of states. Apparently a lot of people are running around scared because of the military and HLS drone issue screwy.gif

Posted by: rick 918-S Jul 6 2013, 06:45 AM

That's Cool! Looks like shots you would have needed to hire a helicopter to get. Puts low buck filming in a new light.

Check out what these guys are doing in WA State. I've been watching them grow and build some amazing footage from their 'copters. They've got some epic views of some race tracks, simply because they can fly their 'copters over head.

They run a two pilot system: 1 for the aircraft and the 2nd for the footage. Carrying a full size camera. That's some lift capacity!

http://vimeo.com/63142147

Their Web Page: http://shiftedcinema.com/

For those on Facebook...they also have a page.

I purchased a small quad for my GoPro and I am building up a larger hexacopter, but will take some time as I practice my flying on the quad. It's a very cool hobby.

Posted by: Elliot Cannon Jul 6 2013, 10:43 AM

Future airliner cockpits excuse me, "flight decks" will soon be occupied by one pilot and a dog. The pilot will be there to feed the dog and the dog is there to bite the pilot if he tries to touch anything. av-943.gif

True! BUSTED! Should be 'hexacopter' with the six arms.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Jul 6 2013, 01:01 PM

Yikes! You really, really need a much less wide-angle lens on that puppy! The distortion is really distracting (not to mention stomach-churning!) when the copter moves at any speed. Most especially if it changes pitch angle!

Pretty damn cool otherwise, though!

Blade is coming out with a new model that is designed to work with GoPro cameras. It should be pretty reasonable (I would guess under $200 for a BNF).

Avoid the iPhone controlled junk. I have a helicopter with an iPhone app to control it (would gladly sell it for $15 plus shipping). There is no substitute for real RC controls. The phone controlled units are just a novelty toy and they have a very short range (similar to a Bluetooth headset).

Sky's the limit though. The heli setup we used at the resort had a few thousand invested.

There is some flex in my quadcopter, but also the GoPro mount doesn't quite take it low enough to get it out of the picture. I try tilting the camera as best I can, but then I have to fly this at a weird angle to get the 'shot'.

I'm saving my pennies so I can buy a gimbal that will hang the camera lower and then auto level the camera despite the attitude of the 'copter.

Flying a home built hand-me-down I bought off of eBay a few months ago. Bought it to learn and now I'm building up something bigger. Too much fun!

As for the place filmed. In-laws live on the beach. If you watch again, you can see a "A FRAMED" house at the top of the property. That's our cabin. It's my wife's (sugar momma) and our go to place for a small get away from the Seattle people. It's always about the meal, the family, and a few cocktails.

Farming Oysters for personal use on the beach. Yea, Happy Hour at any hour here! Current neighbors are awesome and they make their place look like a fuch'n park setting.

I married UP....way UP!

One of my HAM radio buddies is pretty heavy into RC copters and quads. He's planning to build his next (larger) quad from individual components, says it will cost much less than a pre-built RTF or ARF craft. I asked him to order two of everything and we'll get together to build them idea.gif

GPS, gyro stabilized pan/tilt camera gimbal, FPV, the whole she-bang smile.gif

He recently attended a function where there was a lifting contest ... one gas-powered quad lifted a payload in excess of 50 lbs aktion035.gif

I've got a DJI F550 flamewheel coming with the Naza V2 GPS on its way. piratenanner.gif

I'll get some flying time on it and practice my control familiarization. Next purchase has to be a gimbal so I can film with the GoPro with a steady view.

I'd love to get some autocross footage from above and 'chase' a car through the course. The editing is the key to any footage. I often shoot with my GoPro a shot for 3-5 minutes just to edit out most of it for a 10-20 second view.

Good times!

Not to be a skeptic, but I'd love to hear what he builds for how much. Especially if he factors in any time at all. The Blades are great bang for buck. I know my time is worth more than building one from scratch.

I used the following frame ($30) as a basis for my tri copter.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=28496

I replaced the motor mounts and tail servo mechanism with more robust versions.

Without radio/chargers/shipping etc (ie just the tricopter) it's about $200. If you are starting from scratch (like me) and need radio/battery chargers etc, and include shipping from china, it was $450 with extra batteries/props.

This method allows a lot more flexibility with the design. That could be good or bad.
Also, the building/designing phase is also a fun part of the process for a lot of people.

I just ordered some FPV goggles for my tricopter.

I bit the bullet and purchased a DJI Phantom. You can get 'em for as low as $650. I added a set of prop guards and 2 extra batteries to the order.

The Phanotm is really cool. With the built-in GPS, it will fly back to the 'home' location if you happen to lose contact between the TX and RX.

Camera on top makes no sense. The Blade will let you shoot downward at any angle you want. And from the sky, downward makes sense. I must be missing something.

They show you how to mount the battery (or batteries) on top and the camera below.

Would need a taller landing skid too, but all doable for minor $.

Received my FPV kit today (Fatshark Teleporter V3)

It's not going to be as easy as I figured to fly. The lack of depth perception and the wide angle lens makes it difficult for close in flying. I think if I got it to sufficient height and then switched to goggles, I might be ok.

I also need to get rid of vibrations in the frame.

Notice how you can see the blade arms rock from right to left but the camera stays stable. We still need to wire the tilt control for the camera on the gimbel.

Finally have my DJI Flame550 flying. Need to work out some kinks and practice flying. Make sure you view this in 1080HD.

Here's what I shot this weekend at the family farm in WA State!

Neat clip. I like the Flame's 'cameo' shadow in the composition. What editing software are you using?

I'm still dicking around with the FPV set up on the DJI Phantom. Running an older GoPro HD 1080, so I had to update the firmware to allow for the menu function for 'live' streaming video out of the AV (TV out) jack.

I've been using a generic 200mW 5.8gHz AV system and an old Citizen 3.8" LCD monitor (not the best method for bright sunny days) dry.gif ... but it works.

The good news - I just received a Fat Shark 250 mW transmitter and V3 goggle system in the mail today. Bench tested it this evening and it's really cool smile.gif ... the wife even thinks so mueba.gif

I bought an extra Fat Shark 600mW transmitter for another quad that's on the way (the Walkera QR X350), so I won't have to move one transmitter from craft to craft.

Also bought two larger 5000Mah batteries to power the FPV equipment and extend the flight time, but I need to fabricate a lightweight holder under the craft before it takes to the sky :elliot:

This is some fun shit and you guys are way ahead of me. Just been doing the FPV so far, so I'll have to record some video and figure out how to post it on YouTube one of these days confused24.gif

Not a quad/hex/oct-copter, but a rear-facing video aboard a 45"-span Piper Tomahawk taken out at El Toro.

USPS dicked me around on shipping the QR X350 and it was sent back to the vendor blink.gif ... was told that it has something to do with overseas shipping of lithium batteries bootyshake.gif

The vendor expedited the second go around shipping via DHL and it arrived on Friday (a month after I ordered it) dry.gif

Installed the landing skids, prop guards, props and a GoPro mount, but haven't flown it yet. Still need to mount the 5.8gHz FatShark transmitter.

Marc bring it to G&R...

Posted by: euro911 Nov 7 2013, 01:19 PM

Cool, Rick thumb3d.gif

I conducted my first Fat Shark goggle flight at the shop parking lot yesterday, but forgot to push the shutter button on the camera, so no recorded video - duh slap.gif

It was fairly windy, so the video would have sucked anyway. Weird sensation with the goggles too, not as easy as I thought it would be. Think I'm gonna go with a flat screen monitor for a while shades.gif

The park flight (non-FPV) was a little better (more wiggle room), but I need a lot more seat time before I'd feel comfortable flying around a crowd of people ... so no G&R this time.

OK, I'm unfamiliar with the rules, so tell me something. If one of you fine but curious folks, or the kids of the dick who lives down the street, starts hovering over my backyard pool while we're comfortably at ease in what we thought was the privacy of our own home, can I shoot that M.F. out of the air? Over my own property, of course. Can I?

Probably not. Why would you assume your back yard is private? Ever heard of google earth? Shoot that down. bootyshake.gif biggrin.gif

Posted by: euro911 Nov 13 2013, 02:48 PM

Hopefully that won't happen, DB, but I'm sure it has happened and will happen to folks in the future as this kind of technology grows. When things like this do happen, it's 'bad press' for all RC aircraft hobbyists and will probably cause some new laws or additional restrictions to get enacted.

Depending on your local ordinances, discharging a firearm into the air might not be the best approach. I would think that a warning to the perpetrators should suffice first time. For additional occurrences you might need to get law enforcement involved confused24.gif

I'm rural enough that shooting is no problem. Google Earth doesn't have the resolution that these noisy little local mosquitoes do, so it might be able to recognize what's going on, but not with who. It could be Google or Taliban for all I know, so if it's on my property and unmanned I'm shooting and we'll see who complains. Sorry kids, if you really want it back you're going to have to knock on my door and ask me for it.

Sorry was away from the WORLD for awhile. Our family farms wheat/barley and now the WIND. Dad retired after 35 years of farming and the land is leased to a family member who also puts his cattle on the land. We have some prime deer and pheasant hunting too!

I love being a farm kid. My backyard was HUGE!

I would NOT use a firearm. I'd think some sort of arrow with a string or high tensile fishing line attached. When within range I'd lasso that thing and pull it in. biggrin.gif

Hold it hostage and when the person comes looking for it. Make sure you have them understand what tactics you will employ to protect your privacy. confused24.gif

The rules are changing. The FAA has some charter locations to review the rules surrounding the pilotless flights. This shall be interesting.

I love my 'copter, but I seriously would not use it in anyway you describe it. What the hell????

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 27 2017, 11:57 AM

I wanna buy the big one that would actually hold a person and put a big net under it. Fly too close to my place and the drone pirate will get ya! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Elliot Cannon Dec 27 2017, 10:50 PM

I think one of the rules now is you can't fly the drone without keeping it in sight at all times.

Posted by: euro911 Dec 28 2017, 12:48 AM

You are correct, Elliot - and sometimes you'll need a spotter on your crew if you're flying FPV with goggles or an LCD monitor.

The FAA has implemented a host of rules & regulations for hobbyists as well as commercial operators. I'm in the process of attaining a commercial license - might as well make some income to offset spending a lot of $ on these damn things laugh.gif
