Hello everybody!
Next Porsche 914 International Meeting will take place in BORMIO - Italy, from May 28th to June 1st 2014.
Dedicated website in online!
http://www.914meeting2014.it/
I hope to meet You all in Bormio!
Ciao!
Luca
Wow! I wish.
how much to fly a 914 over to Italy?
That would be awesome. I'd love to see Italy.
So come on guys, we wait 4 u in Italy!!!
In a 45' should be possible to load 4 "normal" 914
...or 2 "normal" and 1 limo !!!!
The Alien could fly there....
This one is nice !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=e8rsBDwr1as
Not that I could afford it but lets start a conversation about how and how much it would take to do a trip from the US to Italy.
What port would you ship from?
Where would you ship to? (pick up the car) Germany and drive to Italy? What a cool trip that would be.
Maybe Don will see this and chime in.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought a teener was 13' long, pre 75 anyway. So therefore, in a 45', you should be able to put 6, with proper racks to double stack them.
I will join for sure ...
Here are the roads next to Bormio
Stelvio Pass anyone ?
A video ???

Only 5 hours from Bormio to Stuttgart.

Count me in!
Naysayer!
I guess that even the aircraft carrier idea may not be the best...
That would be fun...
Buy an original clean and reliable 914 at US price. Ship it to France. Have fun at Bormio. Resell the car in France (or Germany) at Euro price and return home with the change...
I do need to sell Betsy. Besides, the aircraft carrier is a bad idea, half our cars would be rusted away by the time they got there.
I shipped my 911SC to Germany for 6 months ( maximum allowed by law)
It was the right thing to do with the car, the car loved it. crusing at 120mph
I was a bit rattled though on the Autobahn because every 20 min and Audi going 180 mph would try to eat my bumper.
I think shipping the 914 to Germany or Rotterdam should be less expensive than Genoa.
It's only 630 miles from Bormio and Stuttgard is right on the way!

Here is a good website with lots of information on how to ship your car for a trip in Europe.
http://www.bmwccaringschool.com/EuropeCarShip.htm
...
Are you going to this event Wolfgang?
well ... I'll wait till my teener is on the road again (about 2 or 3 weeks) and then make my mind
but at the end I think the mountains might win
Not a fan of large crowds either. The wife and are talking about it...we have some logistical things to resolve. Would need to sell a lot of wiring harnesses between now and then to afford it...
And we would be in a rental car...Stelvio would not be as much fun as everyone else in a 914.
I am feeling like there is some interest in a USA contingent attending.... will stay tuned to this thread.
Is it true that there are 40 cars already signed up? The dates indicated by sign-ups look odd.
Hello Jeff!
As organizer, I'm really surprised for the 40 cars already singed up, but they are absolutely real!
And where You see "OK", it means the payment has been received.
OK mm = OK Main Meeting
OK pm+mm = OK Pre Meeting + Main Meeting
format date is of course DD/MM/YYYY
What else...
...I think I'll have to find some more partners to have more and more prizes for everybody!
Ciao!
Luca
Ah...
I agree with You and Wolfgang about the large crowds, but can You imagine one hundred of 914 climbing the Stelvio Pass?
The best traffic jam ever!
that's why I think the mountains might win ...
I already know the Bernina, but didn't run the Forno and Stelvio yet
I think I will check the Status of my car tomorrow, when I meet my German teener friends (they already registered, as I've seen)
Jeff,
I mentioned this to Sandy and she seemed intrigued. I would want to ship a 914 over though. Maybe not the Alien but a 914. I like the idea of selling a car and bringing it over but who ever purchased it would most likely want it for the event.
Thank You Jeff!
Email sent!
Jeff,
Welcome in our http://www.914meeting2014.it/En/partner-1.html !!!
It's a great pleasure and honor for me!
I so want to go to this.....
Here's what we can do.... from the US or CAN, buy, build and document a US or CAN 914 here in the states over the next 8 months. Ship it to Europe for the trip, pre sell, or arrange to sell the car after the event.
We can call the campaign - "Love it and leave it"
In order to do this, we need to organize, plan, and get to work.
I wonder if there are any classic car dealers over there that would purchase the car after the event....
Hi Luca, we will be pleased to offer your group some msds raffle products for the 914.
Send me an email to tech@msdsinc.com and we will have "Samples" sent over for the event.
Have a good show!
Marty
Luca, thank you for adding Jeffs 914 Harnesses to the sponsors page, I have some great prizes to contribute as I have emailed you.
Bormio 2014 is looking like the 914 Porsche event of the century, at least 10 more people have signed up in the last couple of days. The cut-off is 100 right? For the 2004 West Coast Classic in California we had 75 participants...I think you may surpass that at this rate. Very exciting to see and be a part of.
Great idea Rob...this could help pay for the trip and provide a 914 to drive during the event. How many will fit in a container and how much does the container cost to get it there?
I was thinking Luca, is there any possibility that 914s could be rented or borrowed for the event?
That icon you have is really nice quality...Can someone make me a Bumblebee image with this?
Attached image(s)
ehmm...
Jeff, it isn't mine.
I borrow it from the forum of "Club Porsche 914 de France"
I think it's very difficult to rent a 914 for the event.
Anyway I'll explore this possibility.
Question for Wolfgang or other guys that may know. What is a good major port to ship to. I was doing an online search but really don't know where to ship to from the US. I was thinking Rotterdam in the Netherlands or someplace on the Germany coast. My logic would be they ship cars here and need to get containers back to Germany. I would think they rather ship them full than empty.
If Rotterdam, maybe visit Jeroen, Drive to Frankfurt then onto Bormio for the event. Just tossing stuff out there. Lots to think about and lots of info to research before anything could really happen.
well, I'm no expert in these questions, but my teener came from LA to Rotterdam
I know that Bremerhaven is another big shipping port in Germany ...
Welcome to BORMIO 2014, Wolfgang !!!!
And again
in all EMU Countries (such as France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Nederlands, etc.) Euro is the current currency.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurozone
Not in UK or Swiss - but Euro is accepted (and welcome) everywhere such as Credit Cards
I found an interesting site that shows a roll on- roll off system. They drive the cars into the cargo hold and strap them down. I'm going to call Monday and fly a trial balloon by them.
Major car shipping is out of New Jersey.
Major inbound would be Rotterdam, UK, Germany or Spain.
See what is cheaper.
So,
Anna, my genius daughter, is spending her second semester studying abroad in Denmark next year.
My wife and I will be heading over on may 18th to pick her up and drive south to see some of our old friends, housing, sights etc from when we lived there.
So, I will be free on the 28th, and close by.
I will be there.
Rick, they rent cool cars on Munich
Rich
I think you could manage to rent a 914 at Mittelmotor.
I am signed up for Bormio! Who else from 914world is going? Must sign up soon, its almost full, only a dozen more registrations are available, cut-off is 100 cars.
WOW !!!!
Jeff, You are the GREATEST !!!!!
Welcome to BORMIO 2014 !!!
Ciao!
Luca
There are two major dealers/importers in the netherland that import 914.
You could agree that they buy the car after the meeting.
http://www.erclassics.de/
http://home.mobile.de/HOFMAN-LEEK#ses
If you have the intention to sell the car instead of taking it back home, let me know and I'll see if I can hook you up...
I have been checking insurance and shipping. Hagerty will provide insurance for the trip over and back (marine insurance) and insurance while out of country. on a 20k value it would be around combined cost would be in the ball park of $ 1600.00. This was a loose price but did include a 30% surcharge for roll-on roll-off shipping.
I'm working in a shipping quote. I got a one way quote of $ 950.00 from Baltimore to Antwerp. I was told by the shipper this would be for roll on-roll off. They drive your car on the ship and drive it off. The company I checked with only ships one way. So I have a lead from Hagerty I'm checking.
It's cheaper to use a RO-RO service but there is a bigger chance for damage.
I was told that the port at Antwerp Belgium does not charge you a duty based on the vehicles value but I have not verified that. If you ship into the Netherlands they charge a sizable duty based on the vehicles value. As I understand they want to get any taxes owed up front in the event you sell the vehicle and not ship it home. I guess it's reimbursable if you ship the car back to the states but I would rather avoid that cost and red tape if possible.
Hi guys, great to see your efforts to meet us in Italy. I´m really looking forward to see some faces of the 914world community.
Let me give you some info, which could help. I have imported a couple of Porsches over the last years.
>> I would not recommend RoRo (roll on roll off) ! I´ve seen transport workers in the warehouses driving the cars on high revs over the ramps , having fun. There is also danger of dents, scratches and missing (stolen) parts. RoRo ports,I know, are Charleston SC and N.Y.
>> a 40ft.container is good for 3-4 Fourteeners. The workers usually do a very good and solid job on building racks and tighten the cars safely. When they are once stored into container they are safe and you don´t need any insurance. Maybe for "total loss" ,which means ,if the vessel sinks. But the danger for that is almost zero, because the ships are huge and have all modern navigation equipment to escape big storms and known hazards.
>> I have shipped from L.A., Houston TX ,Miami FL , and Linden NJ , but there are more ports like Baltimore,Boston,Ft.Lauderdale depending on the shipping line and your agent.
Miami and Houston have been very conveniant, all N.Y.places are a mess ! warehouses (where you deliver your car) are like battlefields dominated by russians and other east european agents. Pretty rough !
In january 2013 I paid from eastcoast to Rotterdam, 3 cars in a 40´ cont. :
$ 700 shipping plus $ 150 handling fee in U.S. That´s per car ,incl. storage into container (racks) and U.S.customs. It takes 10-14 days to europe, depending on the vessel and route.
Additional fees for unloading and clearance in europe, depending on the destination port.
If you have no contact in the U.S. ask me.
>> When you´re bringing your car to europe, you don´t have to pay any custom or other taxes and can drive it here for 6 month, unless you want to sell it. You need your american tag/ license and a liability insurance min.1 mio Euros. The car has to be in technical safe condition.
If you are determined to sell it here ,you can pay the taxes by arriving, or whenever and whereever you decide to import. But the taxes vary in each country, especially on vintage cars 30years and older. Best bet is Holland (Rotterdam) or France (LeHavre). I myself import to Rotterdam and pay a total of 6 % of value plus shipping. So bring a sales contract or any other document, stating the value of the car. (lower value > less taxes :-) Though fees for unloading and handling in Rotterdam are pretty high, about $ 530 per car.
In germany f.i. you would pay 10% custom tax on value and shipping, plus 19% GST on value, shipping and customtax !!! Again, this does not apply when you bring the car just for vaccation, no import !
If the car is once imported to europe, there is no more tax due in any other EU-country.
>> for me it always was a good deal to buy a Porsche in the U.S. and keep it or sell it here, but ,as you know, you cannot sell a car for a good price in between 3 weeks or so. Means, when you´re here, you won´t have the time to sell it easily. And a car dealer won´t give you the money, you have expected. My suggestion would be, advertise for free under mobile.de before you come and make appointments with interested people by arriving or before departing from europe.
And remember , it is a lot easier to sell a premium 914/6 (low milage, first paint, one owner.....) as an avarage 914/4.
>> You don´t need an int.drivers license, because almost every police officer can read your american one.
>> to rent a 914 is not easy. There was a garage in Eppan, not to far from Bormio, where they had a 914/4 for rent. Check on them : http://www.garage61.it/de
Or ask Wolfgang,Michael or me again in spring next year.
Italy May 2013
Very helpful information!
Thank you Towarish for the excellent information and detail, it is very helpful. I personally am not planning to bring my 914 to Bormio from the USA at this point, but others here are considering it. I would love to rent one or borrow a 914 while I am there, but I think it is difficult because of availability and insurance. I will be happy in a rental car and seeing 99 other 914s all together at the same time!
Looking forward to meeting everyone that I only know from the internet and seeing your 914s.
Tell me, is that snow in your photo something that we can expect at Bormio 2014 for the meet?

Hello everybody!
Today we reached ONE HUNDRED of registered partecipants.
but...
...don't worry, I can wait for all friends coming from USA until the end of March 2014 and guarantee up to 5 rooms
(valid only for people living in USA and other American Nations coming in Bormio with 914)
So continue and find the best solution to attend http://www.914meeting2014.it, You are welcome!
That is astounding news Luca. Is this the largest 914 meet ever in history? Looking forward to it and I hope more USA 914 owners can attend, thank you for the special accommodation.
I think it is interesting what you have accomplished with this event, seemingly more than we have been able to do here in the USA. We can learn from you:
-An incredible location with great driving roads and scenery
-High quality lodging and meals
-Some terrific prizes
-No car show/concours type activity - this is a driving event for drivers
-100 prepaid signups nearly a year in advance, many from great distances away
Is there anything a guy from the USA can bring to his european 914 friends? What would they like?
Well done. Very much looking forward to the event.
<-- wish we had a Bumblebee version of this smiley!
Very cool! I will continue to work on a way I can attend. Lots going on here.
Your link is wrong http://www.914meeting2014.it/En/prizes-1.html
I was told 1994, 25 anniversary event in Germany (Europapark Rust) had 200 cars
Yes Europapark is in a town named "Rust"... weird choice for a 914 event...

wow
great views.
We haven't had that many 914's in one place on the west coast for a long time. It looks like at least 70 cars. I think we had less than 20 at the West Coast Ramble. Not like it used to be. By the way that is one gorgeous looking airport.
Hello everybody!

that's me (in the middle) with two friends from Bavaria
You don't own a 914 if you are a conservative guy
...
But it does seem like there's a lot of non-flared cars there, so maybe the term "conservative" is reasonable to an extent...
Forgive me, but is this Blofelds' lab from "On Her Majesties Secret Service"?

Thanks for the pics guys.....
Wow....these are some of the most awesome posts with pics I have seen here since being a member.
Doesn't look like it gets any better than that.

Look at that freakin' weather....Damn perfect !!!
Are the cars with Porsche on the engine grill all US imports?
Very few flared cars. Americans are into big horsepower and big wide wheels!
wow what a dream cruise!
How many 914s total?
I did that pass in an Opel in 1980 (power brakes, power brakes) and it beat the hell out of me...can't image running through there in the teener. Awesome

Let me take this opportunity to thank Luca again for this wonderful event.
Unfortunately I had troubles with with the MFI. I knew the fuel mixture was very rich anyway, but in this height at 8000ft.and up, with very low oxygen supply, the engine was dying every second hairpin. Many others experienced the same issue, but mostly 6-cyl.-carb-engines.
Hi folks,
Mine wasn't ready at the time but hopefully I can join the next event

ps : indeed Europeans are not into widebodies, flared 914's... and yes, a lot of US cars end up here... like mine
Thank you for the link
An absolutely fantastic gathering! The 914 looks so good in those European settings and on those alpine roads with all the hairpins and switchbacks. Those of you who attended must certainly have had an experience with memories to last a lifetime.
Many thanks to all who contributed to this thread with photos and commentary
A last observation......had anyone recorded the VINs of the participating 914s?
