Why are the shock towers different than most others I've seen? Has this car been rear ended? Try image 5.

Maybe if anything looks like the factory seam sealer was cleaned off of them and they look smoother than normal?

does yours not have the rubber nipple covers? It does look like seam sealer is gone though.

Was looking at this cat today. Perhaps nothing is wrong, but welding/forming of steel was different (way smoother) than anything else I had seen. What could be the reason for this?

The trunk was re-done. It would originally have been body color, this is black. So chances are the seam sealer was removed as part of the stripping process, and it was either re-applied with a very smooth finish, or not re-applied at all.
