This is the strangest thing I have ever seen. Trying to set the timing and the flash from the light is intermittent at best. Ok so I have a cheap light but I know number 1 has spark. I used my self as the ground to be sure.
Engine runs like it is hitting on all 4 and pulling #1 does change the engine speed. But move the clip to any other wire and it works. Swapped the wire from 1 to 2 and the light works on 2 but still not on 1?
I have a compufire ignition. Swapped caps and rotor and got the same thing.
Ideas?????????
2.0 dual 44s. Using the dizzy that was running my 1.8.
Wires can go bad and caps can go bad.
The light triggers by current.
If #1 is the only one that gets too low of a current to trigger (after moving wires) means that the Distributor is at fault.
Change caps to see if problem goes away.
and then check dist bearings (reason caps go bad)

EDIT: oh and a plug that is not firing....
The clamp on my old timing gun didn't pick up the signal from the #1 plug wire that well at times. Moving the clamp around to different spots on the wire seemed to make a difference.

My timing light has to have the arrow on the clamp pointing to the spark plug, else it does not work... /lars s
Similar to what Lars said, you can try clamping it the other way or you can clamp onto #3 wire.
Mark you cant set the timing using #3 right?
Set timing by ear and drove it a bit. My snail guage broke so I can't really set the carbs at all.
I am going to switch back to the orginal 2.0 dizzy and see if #1 will show on the timing light.
Have you checked the plug?
A fouled plug may not give a "sharp" enough edge to trigger the light.
