This is me feeling out how likely it is we could get enough people together for a clinic while I am out visiting with family. Here is the questions that need to be answered.
1- Is McMark and his shop available the weekend of Oct 19-20, and would he be willing to host?
2- Is this too short of notice for most of you?
3- Can I get that time off for this?
#3 is the one I see being the biggie as I need to talk to my medical director and ask for time off before and after the clinic. Noel and I will be celebrating out anniversary on the 18th, I have already requested no work on the 18-19. I can request 8 days off in a row as I only have to work 14 a month. I need to see if I can do 3 before and 3 after or some configuration thereof.
I am thinking that McMark's shop will be the best venue with Disco Bay being an alternated.....but I anticipate a lot of people.
Let me know if you are in as a paying participant. Stay tuned. My wife has put pressure on me to keep the number of these clinics to very few and more local so I do not know when I will next be out this way. Keep this in mind
Potentially. My biggest concern would be that if it's rainging it wouldn't work. I have too many projects in the shop that can't get wet.
You have a month and a half to finish them
I've got 4 transmissions that need opening....is that enough
I'm in
Jeff
So, is there a "watcher" fee and an "I brought my transmission to work on" fee?
I'm not to the "tear it open" point, but I'd love to watch the process and, perhaps, be someone's diligent helper? I just need to know so I can ask off for the Saturday (IF someone will cover for me. . it SUCKS being the "saturday Dean)
Sean
Nooooo.....not THAT weekend....
As with previous clinics:
Participation - $300 per builder, as many transmissions as you can. 18 and under are free.
Spectators - Free
I will have used parts for sale, and stainless hardware is free.
I'd be a maybe
I might come to hang and drink beer
My Cayman S 6 speed does not need a rebuild...
I need this but wont be ready till after the end of the year. (to much other stuff needs to get done before I tear into the new project) How about a PNW clinic in Jan or Feb?
I would be interested in attending but the transaxle that I had was taken in the theft; could be a spectator and willing to contribute something. At least. it would give me a reason to visit the Bay Area/Sac area. Will keep tuned.
Steve
Dr Evil you still owe us a clinic in the south at some point. My wife says it is unlikely that she will fly me and my trans to SOCAL!
This will possibly be the last west coast clinic for a year, or longer. Each clinic I do will push the next farther back and I am trying to plan an Australian/New Zealand clinic early next year.
Do I need to have a core?
My son has a wrestling tournament that weekend :-( We have been anxiously waiting for your return!! If the date changes you can count us in!
Regards
James IV & V
I will be out on my boat that week so Disco-bay is out unless you want to do it the weekend before or after the 18th!
I have been waiting for this to happen for a long time!!!
PS: I have 3 core transmissions and one that I want to put a flipped H gear in!
Crap. Well, I can not do it any other time so it is Napa or nothing. We may need Easy Ups if rain is forecasted.
Hey Mike
Man I need this clinic in the worst way. Since I first contacted you in 2009 I've been collecting gears (got all 5), a 904 shaft, and parts to make my 74 sideshifter more compatible with my 3.2 sixer.
My case is leaking now, so I probably need a new case too.
But I've got music gig on Saturday the 19th.
Would it be possible to ship my tranny unaccompanied to be torn down on 10/19, and then be there for the rebuild on Sunday the 20th? My gig is in Yreka, which is extreme NorCal, so I would be driving until 10pm to get there, but could make it.
I'd still be willing to pay full fare.
Mike
I can make this....we have relatives in Monterrey if you aren't going to be in SoCal for another year Mike.
We'll have to drive up to Disco Bay from there.
Keep us posted.
Yes I have a core to rebuild.
.........it's even been cleaned.
If rain is a concern, bring your stuff to Paso Robles and do the clinic in my hangar at the airport.
what's wrong with us texas people? we keep asking and you just turn your ugly eye back to california. kinda pisses us off sometimes. we love yankees and hold no grudge that you didn't come here to be a real doc. we're good folk too. we're simple country bumpkins with a porshe car too. we ride horses and love unicorns like family. we can probably russle up a barn to work in and promise to shovel out the shit before you get here. you can also put your 6 shooter in your belt and go to mcdonalds and the kids will praise your sole for such a big gun. whatcha you think about coming down to gowds country sometimes? see if we can get you a meetup with Ted Nugent - how bout that?
just asking...
p.s. don't judge us by lone star beer either. It sucks.
That's an even better idea. And next time you see him, say hi for me to Ted spoiled, rich, rock star, draft dodging, pussy, asshole, Nugent.
I've got a 930 box that just started with the infamous 3rd gear grind. Could this be brought to the clinic for rebuild?
I need the location to be close to the family in the bay area that I am coming out there to meet with our new son. I think Sac may be too far, unless Mark feels this is a better idea.
Mike Knox, I am sure we can work something out.
Pat, I will not be set up for the 930. Sorry, but hauling extra stuff for several boxes will be difficult. I am limited on space and weight due to flying out. I still need to find out how to get around this when I eventually go to Oz as we are trying to do 915/930 there.
Alright gents, the tickets have been purchased (ouch). The family and I will be arriving the afternoon of Oct 17th and departing on the 22nd. If it helps, I can do Fri and Sat if Mark can. I am flexible in the time I am there.
Time to start taking money for tuition! PM me if you are in.
Alright, the 912 guys have been made aware
so - exactly where & when is this actually gonna happen?
i have lost track of all the potential dates & locations
can you do a 915 flip conversion in the melee?
No 915 this time
Oct 19-20 at McMarks shop http://www.originalcustoms.com/
Shall we raffle off the flared chassis I have? $600 a ticket.
I need a few new synchros.
I'm a definite maybe for this meet.
I will be there!!
PM sent.
Mike Knox
I had a great time at the last one helping people with trannies. I still don't need a trans. I have two "spares" trannies... would love a LSD, but no $
Dang, it is shaping up.....if you have a912 I have 3 committed 912 people and one 914. Its all good. This will happen.
pm sent!
As I said in an earlier post while you we're gauging demand, I am definately in.
Im in, PM sent!
Doc If you come thru so cal I have a lot of gears and some sportomatic trans and gears for sale email if you are interested bernbomb914@verizon.net
I will be there. Do you supply cores, or do I need to find one before I get there?
Bring a core. You can probably find one from someone coming.
My tuition payment to Gearhead University is in the snail mail for Dr. Evil as of this morning!!
Mike Knox
Things are shaping up. Gonna be a good turn out and clinic.
I will hopefully be there! But as a spectator.
IF I end up going, and IF there is anyone in the SD/LA area that wants me to bring up their tranny for rebuilding i would be more than happy to shuttle it up and back and do the rebuild during the clinic (you would pay the rebuilders fee of course), shoot me a PM if this is something you are interested in.
I also have a tailshift core that i do not need if anyone is in need of one, again shoot me a PM.
I am so jelouse!!!! I have no chance of attending this and I have been trying to get it here for so long!
I just hope we get another some day!!
Up to 11 or more
I am trying to find a core, but if I can't I will try to make it up there anyways.
FL is going to happen someday, at Joe O's shop. However, I need to schedule it. Australia is gonna take a lot of my resources.
I did a Dr Evil clinic in 2007 or 08 or something. Still going great!
I'll be watching this thread w possibility of joining as a spectator or helper.
The clinic gave me the confidence to go back in and swap gears in my 901- I now have a flipped 5th gear in 3rd for a short-shift 2->3rd that I love when AX racin.
If you end up w more cores than hands, I could roll up the sleeves and do a supervised rebuild for a small fee of premium beer or wine
ALSO, if it's sunny, then
I have one maybe two extra transmissions if someone needs one to rebuild, I can bring them to the clinic. Pm sent.
Jeff
Wow, this is blowing up. 13 students so far.....I hope McMark is ready
:-)
Mike Knox, your check arrived.
Do we need to bring a gasket set? Anything else we should bring.
Jeff
Yes, please bring your own seal kit and normal tools. Anything special will be provided.
Lemme see what I can get seal kits for... I love GPR, but I can save shipping.
Okay here's what I can get
Seal Kits: $45
Dog Teeth: $145
Synchros: $100
Rebuilt Speedo Drive units: $65, but I need cores to do ahead of time.
I'd like to bring my 16year old son in and walk thru the rebuild of my '76 transaxle.
So other than my tools, I need to bring seal kit and trans?
Anything else?
Where do we "sign up"?
Thanks
Brian
Mark, I have a box of good speedo cores that I can mail you. When you say "synchros $100" you meaning the bands? That is more than Pelican at $85ea.
This time around I am not ordering seal kits as I am limited on weight and space with my family coming west for the trip. Thus, y'all got to get your own kits
If anyone needs a transmission to rebuild I have two available, one came from a parts car at pick n pull, turns but don't know anything about it, $150 includes a seal kit.
The other I drove in my car a while, came from a 74, worked fine except 2nd could be tough at times, $250.00 including a seal kit. Or make me an offer.
I can bring them to the clinic, or if no one buys them...I'll rebuild them.
Jeff
They get a better price than me because of volume. I won't be offended if no one buys anything from me. Just offering as a convenience for others.
I'd love to get those cores. Ship them to the shop and pm me a price.
I ordered seal kits from EBS Racing, $43 no tax, free shipping.
Pelican shows $32, but they're out of stock.
Jeff
I hear you on the parts cost, Mark. The person I usually get parts from does low volume for my stuff because I do low volume so my savings is not always that much. Nice of you to offer and nice to have available.
I will ship the cores I have to you, no worries.
count me in ill just have to make sure i dont have work those days... anyone have a core i can buy off them, my car might not be here by then. (getting shipped back from nj)
PM sent - is there a limit on participants?
20 paid is going to be the limit, I think. Currently 8/17 paid.
Wife sent check yesterday.
I plan on going as a spectator/assistant if anyone needs one.
It might be worth the trip just to eat at the Girl and the Fig. And of course I'll get to again see the transmission expert, M.D., Rock Star.
Has anyone made plans for a motel close in?
Up to 10paid/19registered
12/19
13/20
Any cut-off date to register & pay.
Jim
you being a contractor, saw horses and a sheet of plywood works great. when one was held in tacoma, i took a set of waist high horses and an old pingpong table top to mike's house. made for ample room with up to 5 or 6 guys working on the trans. 3 2x4s under the pp top made for a sturdy surface.
k
don't use AC plywood!
I was going to be one of the lookie-loos, but I'm out that weekend. Moving.
--DD
Alright - so this is my first clinic and I'm trying to sort out all of the details. From what I gather I need to bring the following:
- Transmission core
- Standard set of tools
- Table to work on
- Gasket Set
Is there anything I'm missing? Also - is this a one day or two day event?
A good pair of snap ring plyers will avoid having to wait to share with someone else!!
You can finish in one day if you are motivated and if you let me do your assembly.
Will you have the bus done in time ?
get the ext of the trans cases as clean as you can prior to the event. the fumage at mike's was a bit overwhelming from all the cans of brake cleaner and paper towels soaked in it. might consider a run to costco, sam' club, etc for a jumbo package of towels. you're going to need them. don't forget to drain the gear lube.
Besides the tranny you bring. It's great to bring a spare tailshift you can use for parts. You will need them for sure. Dr Evil will have plenty too. Just don't forget gears & things can be spendy. It will cost you more than your entry fee for the parts you need. These clinics are a blast. I'd still like to make the trip but doubt I can swing it. October is a busy month of travel for me.
Mike,
Which club are you doing the arranging for your Oz trip with? I would like to keep abreast of arrangements.
We have a much bigger 911 cohort here than 914 as the 914 was only LHD. I guess you are negotiating with the 911 blokes.
Would be handy to plug in to things as they happen through the relevant forum.
Look forward to seeing you down under
David
The Oz trip is being brokered on many of the forums there, not just one, and I am not sure which ones. Michel Starling is the guy doing the ground work. I know that the early S forum has a thread.....that I can not post too because I am not a member
Update, things are heading along perfectly. I plan to gut several core gear boxes in the next two days to build up stock. The current stats are that 16 out of 23 paid. Those that reserved and have not payed per my records:
Rottnjohnny
Skeats
Andrew Brooks
Dale Presson
Let me know if you have changed your mind so I can remove you from the list.
Some of these are likely paid under a different name so let me know if this is the case.
I will be at the NorCal Transmission Clinic later today! Hope to see you all!!!
No, you will be at Original Customs later today. Dont go confusing people into thinking that they have the wrong day. I dont want to field those emails
WTF! No one showed up!
Hey McMark, this is almost all of the cores I am sending you. I have 2 more to extract from two cores.
Here is a nice pinion I found in one of the cores I parted today.
Is there a difference in the colors of the angle drives?...or are they just dirty?
Dirty drives.
Skeats, got you now that I know who you really are
Actually, the early 911 ones are brass instead of aluminum.
I never noticed as all of the insides were ugly. The one with the angle still on it is 911. I dont have a cone to hold it to pull it off so you get the whole thing.
I am hoping to come but just for fun. Not building any transmissions this time. Happy to lend a hand & I will bring some of the tools just in case. I know I have a few of the required.
I do have a good "H" Gear if anyone is interested. I bought it for $450 & will sell it for that also.
Separated the trannie from the engine out of the white car, drained the fluid and pressure washed all three transmissions....they're all purdy now.
Guess I'm ready, working on the shop the rest of the weekend, roll up door goes in tomorrow
Jeff
Not a good idea to wash the gear boxes until the day before. Water will get in and your parts will start to get rusty.
Pretty sure I posted that in numerous places previously
If you taped up the vent, you probably didn't get a lot of water in the trans. The seals will deflect a lot of the water from the pressure washer, at least that has been my experience.
Go get a gallon jug of WD-40 and put about a quart in each trans and "roll" them around and drain them again. That should get most, if not all, the water out.
If anyone still needs a core trans for this clinic, I have a spare.
Jim
Do not pressure wash the transmission. Do not sand blast the transmission.
Guess I should clarify....didn't actually "pressure wash" , sprayed degreaser on...did some brushing and scraping, then used my pressure washer with a gentle tip to rinse them off, I have a hot water hook up, so it rinses well without a lot of pressure, plus I avoided spraying directly at the seals, and vent areas.
Pulled all three out today, pulled the drains, rolled them around and got some remaining gear oil out, only one looked like it might have had a little water in the gear oil, but not much if it even was. Just to be on the safe side I took some Mobil 1 I had left over from the Boxster and put a quart in each one, rolled them around, tipped them up and down, spun the gears, then drained them...came out clean looking no water.
Guess I missed your previous posts on the subject, I'm old... cant read everything.
Should be fine.
Jeff
You cant read the entire internet?
Alrighty, I just finished a marathon parting session and the guts are cataloged, packed, and due to head out tomorrow to McMarks shop via USPS Priority Flat Shipping Gonna ass rape them on that one. I hope they dont lose my shit or I will be getting done.
I have to report, though, that I only have 4 good used 1st sliders, and one new. So, if anyone gets stuck needing a slider I will have to talk them through the procedure to install. It is very easy and is the last step in assembly so only minutes worth of work. However, lately I have been finding that 1st sliders are not as bad off as they are, nor as their owners are cheap. So, this has not been much of an issue.
Time is running out! Hows the weather looking? Bring cover if you have it.
Supposed to be 80ish and sunny all weekend...though we are counting on California weather people here who are questionably correct 15 minutes out, let alone 5 days:)
Jamie, you going through Sac Saturday morning?
If it is nice out, maybe McMark will be able to push some projects out?
I have 20 students coming. Gonna be LARGE.
Mark, two heavy boxes coming to you priority USPS with lots of parts. One has your speedo parts in it.
The event on the 19th is at Alameda Naval Air Station. You can check Google Maps for how far from McMark's shop (or Sac) that is. It's a good ways from Sac, though.
--DD
Why the fuck are you chiming in on matters that do not concern you?
If I want your $.02, I will ask for it.
Actually, it does concern me. Mark is my friend. Sunday is the first day of his work week. He has two guys who are going to show up for work and expect to get payed for it. The available work space in the shop is roughly half of what it was the last time you did a clinic there. Even with projects pushed outside, there isn't the room there was unless he pushes everything out. Mine is one of the projects that would be pushed outside so there is my concern. I don't want it outside.
Don't even get me started on what I think of the value of your clinic... Remember, I promoted the last one, I kept waiting for some instruction to happen. It didn't. It doesn't. $300 dollars for you to look at people's parts and say it is good or no good? I thought some instruction was going to happen. Wow.
This is a forum. Last I checked, everyone's $.02 was welcome... I certainly don't need you to ask for mine...
Rob, send me your address and I will send you a check for $300. I had no idea that you felt this way. This is the first time you mentioned it and you are the ONLY person to ever bitch.
As far as the "well he is my friend" shit, that does not give you social charge to chime in on shit that is not concerning you. Last I checked, I was setting this up with Mark, not you. I was communicating with Mark, not you. You are not privy, nor should you be to what Mark and I have discussed as it is not your concern.
As for your feeling that since you have a car in his shop you get to pipe up and dictate what goes on, you dont. You trust Mark with your car, he will do right by it as is his charter and nature. For you to come in here and post about shit means that you either do not believe he will act appropriately with regards to your car, or that you are the type that likes to get involved with shit that does not concern him. Many of us know it is not that you dont trust Mark.
Your comments on the operation of Mark's affairs, my clinic, and finances are in poor taste and character. Please stay out of my affairs as they do not directly concern you. Mark can speak for himself so I will not attempt to do so for him.
PLEASE send me your paypal addy. You will have the money back in seconds. I can not believe you had such animosity pent up all this time. Did you not get a rebuilt transmission? If you expect to learn to rebuild completely in one weekend, you are sorely mistaken. Not only that, but I need to teach a large group of people to cover the cost to come out. This cuts into the 1:1 cuddle time you so richly missed out on. Consequently, I do plenty of free tutoring and Q/A via phone and PM on an almost daily basis. You never even tried to contact me with issues, questions, problems and NOW you want to pull these feeling up as justification for why you are qualified to hate me and my clinic?
WTF?
BTW, I publicly invite any of you who feel that the clinics were not worth while, and have not yet spoke up for fear you may waste the vitriol rather than saving it up for later when it can come out in an argument, to post your negative comments so that I may address them and make amends.
Like arguing with a woman.
I don't harbor animosity. If I did, you would have heard about it. I brought a rebuilt transmission to the clinic and my own expert (jcd914) who is a trained Porsche tech. We brought our own factory 901 tools intending to install a M and S gear. I even told you that, though it was clear you weren't listening. In point of fact, you slowed us down when you came over and started scrambling the parts around. I guess you didn't see the looks you were getting when you did. I paid for the clinic so that there would be enough people. I arranged with Mark to use his shop and promoted your clinic. Knowing what I now know, I wouldn't have done any of that. If you're going to have a clinic, teach. You don't. What you do is give people the confidence to tear into their own transmission because in the end, you will rescue them. I guess there is some value in that though I'm not sure it is $300.
By the way, if you don't want people to tell you what they really think, don't tell them it is none of their concern. Wow... You think you can intimidate me? You need to check your ego.
"Why the fuck are you chiming in on matters that do not concern you? confused24.gif
If I want your $.02, I will ask for it."
Give that money to Mark. It doesn't begin to pay him for his lost shop day but at least it's a gesture.
Oh yes, I remember. You were the guys that refused to listen to me when I told you not to do something, or to do something else. Yes, I basically left you in the hands of your trained mechanic at that time. He wanted to put RTV on the seals. This is wrong, I said so, the manual says no sealant, and he told me he would do it any way. Your handicap in that clinic was that you brought a teacher to teach you and then wanted me to agree with him. Nope.
Intimidate you? Seriously? What are you, 12? I am not trying to intimidate anyone. I posted my relevant thoughts, on a topic that I started and am in charge of, in response to your, now continuing, irrelevant thoughts.
Where do you get off dragging Mark's financial status, agreements, or other monetary issues out into a public forum in a topic that has no concern to you? Wow. That is some seriously ballsy shit.
My offer of a refund is good until the end of the day. After that, I do not care what you think and you can pound sand. You are an outlier, thankfully.
IBTL
For those here for the right reasons, the PO was closed today due to Columbus day.
I think I will have time to ship them and have them arrive on time. If there is doubt, I will be flying with them. Cost a lot of $$ to bring this crap across country, shipping is best.
Consequently, the 912 guys that were at the last Sonoma clinic loved it so much that they are now making up the bulk of this class They are a great bunch and melded well with us 914 guys. It must be the shared feeling of marginalization by the real Porsche owners
Gonna be a fun time and cant wait to see some new faces and some old ones.
Well I'm in the middle now. All I can add is...
Looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend.
I accepted your refund offer. I said Give it to Mark.
By the way, I'm not sure who you are thinking of, but there is no RTV on my transmission. But, I'm not surprised. You spent a total of 15 seconds at our table, barely said anything as you scrambled the well organized parts around, then walked away. Why would you remember correctly?
Pillow fight!
Dr. Evil & Rob please just hug it out. In private though. Non of us like to read this bashing of each other. Your both good people so chill out & handle it privately. If this clinic is going to have any of this going on. I won't drive the 17hours round trip just to hang out with people I consider friends
Now back to the clinic. I am just coming down to hang out. If the weather is nice I see no reason we wouldn't be doing it outside. I am only coming to hang out really. I'd throw my canopy in but I'll be full up in my 914. Was going to bring my trailer too but I don't have my stinger setup done. I also can fit what I need to bring in my car. Mainly Jeff's set of Fuchs . Then I'm picking up some parts for Hines there. I also have an "H" gear coming down for Wes. Going to be a fun weekend I hope. Oh yeah & without the trailer. I don't get stuck with CA trailer speed limits
Interesting read...
That said, allow me to throw in my long overdue dos centavos...
I was no less than stoked when I discovered there would be a clinic (by my understanding, a place where one might go to have a health issue addressed by a doc/professional) within very reasonable distance. My patient is my transmission; it was in dire need of some servicing. As the time neared to make payment, I let Mike know that I'd be unable to attend as my financial situation had not improved, and that I'd hold out for the next time.
Mike insisted I attend regardless, and I took him up on his generosity. For my own edification, I am very thankful that I was able to attend. I did not expect to walk out knowing confidently that I could rebuild a 901, but I did walk out with a transmission that performs as best as I can expect. Did he instill me with confidence? Based on the moment when the patient was completely torn apart and lying on the table, with nothing short of did I just get myself into, I'd say, ultimately, absolutely.
What I saw was someone who could dis/reassemble one of these with the veritable both eyes closed. I was nothing short of amazed, especially when my massive brain fart handed over the wrong race for the very nice spare main bearing to replace my cracked one. It was near the end of the day when it was discovered, and instead of saying something like don't worry, it'll be fine, Mike disassembled the tranny, replaced the proper race, and had it back together in some 17 minutes.
Yes, less money than good seats at a football game and certainly more entertaining. My tranny shifts great, all grinding is gone, I can downshift without fear, and overall performance is what I'd hoped for.
So if your considering attending one of these clinics, Id recommend it. It's fun, educational, you'll meet new people, and the Doc will regale you with a few stories that'll provide more than enough comic relief.
I too was like Porschef, I did not have the confidence to tear into my box alone! I went to the first clinic at Marks and learned enough to at least consider doing it again! When I sold my original 6 with the rebuilt trans and bought another car that needed a trans I offered to host one of the clinics at my house in Discovery Bay! I (with the help of Lennies914) rebuilt two boxes at that clinic and both are running flawlessly! The doc has the ability to look at your box and tell you why something is bad and what it will take to fix it! There are lots of core parts around so you can almost always find the parts you need for next to nothing or even free!
Anyone who thinks this clinic is not worth the $$ is just plain wrong and should pay the $2000 to have your box rebuilt!
Thats my $.02!
Thanks Doc for the service you provide and I wish I could go to this clinic and install my flipped H, maybe next year !!
But what about the...ya know...gas thing...is the legend true or what? (Sorry trying to lighten it up gents)
Guess I am going to chime in so members reading this thread several years from now can consider several views.
There is no way in hell I would ever break open a transmission on my own! Something about all that stuff in there I just cannot visualize. In addition there are limited options on this planet to have your transmission rebuilt and modified with an H gear as I did, all for the sum of 300$ Drop your 901 off at a dealer and see what it would cost.
The clinic was fun. I got to hang out with great people all of whom drove far to attend. I got to put a face on the members names. I learned the rebuilding process from 500 feet. I never worried it wasn't going back together correctly. Dr was there for every minute and he would spend as much time on your box as you asked for. There was no slide show, no formal presentation, but he walked you through the entire process. He answered any question I asked him.
Can't speak for anyone else, but for me -
It was Fun
It was Educational
It was part of my experience of building a 914 within a budget.
It allowed me to meet others who support this community- Dr. Evil, ScottyB.
I ended up with a rebuilt box modified for my V8 project
It was well worth my time, effort, and money. Jeez my wife spends 300$ a month on her frickin hair!
I would and will do it again. And those are the facts in my reality.
Didn't mean to stir up anything when I asked about being in the parking lot, just wanted to be prepared. With the forecasted weather, outside might be nicer anyway.
Looking forward to it, had a good time at the last one.
Thanks to McMark for the use of his shop, in or out. But that's the kind of guy he is.
See you there.
Jeff
Not sure what everyone wants to do for , I've got a few roasts left from our last steer, got a good BBQ beef recipe from my son in law in Texas, so I was thinking BBQ beef sandwiches, easy to warm up on the BBQ.
If that sound good I'll cook up the BBQ beef, maybe someone can bring rolls, salads ect to go with it. Maybe a big pot of beans for Doc.
Let me know.
Jeff
I have a mid sized easy up that i can bring ...
What is the starting time for the clinic Saturday morning?
Hi everyone,
I have a music gig Saturday, at 2pm, and will be driving down from Oregon after that. So I'll miss the BBQ, but I will be there on Sunday.
Looking forward to getting my transmission problems fixed, and a properly geared tranny for my 3.2.
Mike
Kick off is 9am, food is a good idea. Generally, it is up to the individual unless the natives wish to provide. I am a gear monkey and not a cook at these things.
If people want to chip in for grub, that is cool. If it is something that needs to be cooked, then that is up to who ever wants to volunteer. BUT, that will cut into build time so let me know so I can cover you by doing more of your build.
I unfortunately do not have the excess to buy everyone lunch as I use these clinics to pay bills after transpo, shipping, core purchasing and harvesting, etc.
Just put the order in for the stainless hardware. Trying to work a shit load at my day job and get this all done is a real.....adventure I ordered enough SS nuts and washers for all participants to outfit one box.
Shipping directly to OriginalCustoms, should be there no later than Fri and as early as Thurs as I paid for 2 day.
The two big boxes left today, should arrive Thurs. Mark, if you want to open them, one has a smaller box of speedo drives and some drives tucked in and around. Cant remember if it is the medium or large box. Your name is on the smaller box so you dont have to dig if you dont want to.
You're welcome. Pretty darn good stuff.
Thanks again.
I planned on making enough BBQ beef for around 30, if skeates brings the rolls that should take care of sandwiches. If anyone else can bring a salad, chips, beans, plates ect we should have food covered.
I planned on cooking this slowly in the crock pot ahead, so we will just need to fire up the BBQ to warm it up, shouldn't cut into build time too much.
Jeff
As a host of one of the clinics, I have to admit, I am in all honesty sorry for those of you who feel you are getting a one on one tutorial to be able to build trannies for customers for only 300.00. I watched ( and God forbid worked ) as Mike helped to build around 8 transmissions in about 10 hours to, AFAIK, happy customers. If you expect to be able to be a competent professional trans builder for 300.00, you better keep on
For those of you with real expectations, enjoy the clinic, and your like new trans
Sorry there are misunderstandings higher up the thread.
I've rebuilt my share of various engines with my dad. VW's like popcorn, MG, Nissan, Mercedes Diesel etc. My dad was a machinist. I'm a Mechanical Engineer. Machinery is in our blood, though I'm sure there are people who are attending who do this stuff in their sleep.
When it comes to transmissions/transaxles, we never had reason to crack one, so it's a "mystery". I'm very comfortable with precision machinery, but I'm also the same guy who took a perfectly working Daisy BB gun (at age 9) and said "let's look inside"..... SPRUOooooooooooooIIIIIINNNNGGG the guts of my rifle flew across the garage, never to be found again.
I'm hoping that my 16 year old son and I can get enough guidance so we know where the "exploding springs" are and not totally screw up the gear box.
Looking forward to it.
P.S. I don't have an easy-up, but my pickup has a lumber rack we can tie some ropes to and suspend some shade tarps, what do you think?
Did this happen already? Did I seriously miss my chance to go to a legendary clinic !?!?! I have a transmission that has a troubled 5th gear I need help with... Bummer.
-Luke
The clinic has not happened yet. It will be this weekend.
I'll plan on rolls for 30 (ish) people.
I'll bring potato salad.
Had some plywood and 2 x 4's laying around, so after work today, I put together a 4' X 8' work table. I Have enough materials for another one, if I have time I'll put it together and bring two. Since I have to drive the work truck, I have lots of room. Figured there might be a few who don't have or can't bring a table.
See you there.
Jeff
I'm planning to drop by on Sunday to say hi and hang for a bit.
For those of you thinking about indoors vs out, with a dozen or more people cleaning up their parts all in the shop at the last clinic, the fumes inside were intense. I'd snag a spot outside if you can. The weather should be nice!
Cheers,
dug
I am going to autocross Saturday in Santa Rosa, then come buy Sunday to hang.
Remember to drain your trans before!!!
I'll bring baked beans
wrap that nice work surface in some 6mil plastic. maybe twice. it'll be bonfire material after the clinic.
I'll bring Plates, forks, and napkins!
Got the other table put together, but I only have one set of saw horses, if anyone has a set they could bring that would help. Planned on covering them with a blue tarp.
With Wes bringing plates forks and napkins looks like lunch is provided, any other food items are welcome, don't forget to bring your beverage of choice.
Getting close.
Oh, if anyone still needs a core, there will be some available at the clinic.
Jeff
I'll bring some links and some
Hell yeah I will be hitting the road tomorrow. Hopefully by 1 but we'll see how it goes. Still need to put a travel tool kit together & get packed in general.
Don't worry Wes I allready have your "H" gear in the 914
Don't worry Jeff I have your fuchs in my 914 too. Actually they are still on it. I'll be pulling them off tomorrow & removing the tires. Text me your address sometime tomorrow. I'll update you sometime during the day when I hit the road
I just built a set of beefy sawhorses I'll bring along with a table and some ply.

Pulled my engine and transaxle last night. Wow I've forgotten so much. I remembered having once pulled my trans and leaving the engine propped up with a jackstand in the car, but totally forgot the two upper bolts on the bellhousing face FORWARD with the nuts in the engine bay.. struggled for an HOUR trying to get my wrenches or sockets on the bolt above the starter.. really pissing me off so I finally relented and dropped the whole thing.
HAHAHAHA.. I'm getting senile.. there they were easy as pie if you knew where to look.
Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. Take pics, notes, make new friends, ask questions, have a good time, learn, teach, gonna be great
Tranny Clinic Advice
1. Bring your A game. Herr Doktor has heard them all and has Gravy responses all ready to go. Your grade three insults will not suffice.
2. He has lost a lot of weight since you last saw him. Compliment him on his figure. A lot.
3. Do not give him any gifts until your tranny is done. Especially if the gift is alcohol or a relative.
4. If you have a question, you should ask it.
5. The woman in his video is not his wife. So, feel free to comment.
6. Any and all personal medical questions can and will be answered. If you are shy, just take a cell phone pic of your rash and show it to him.
7. Do NOT get him wet.
8. Do NOT feed him after midnight.
9. Your neighbours are an invaluable source of telling you that you fucked up on reassembly. They are also an invaluable source of incidental parts. Bring lots of cash or lots of Vaseline and rubber gloves.
10. Bring lots of rubber gloves.
11. Bring lots of rags. Or, a super absorbent long haired cat.
12. Don't get mad. Get Steven. ( I think that is the saying... )
13. Whatever other shenanigans you have in mind, finish your tranny first.
14. Help out others. But only if you didn't screw your tranny up.
15. Don't bother wearing pants. It's hot out. And tranny fluid is stinky.
16. Under no circumstances should you wear a stingy brimmed fedora.
17. Ever.
18. Do NOT fall in the fire.
19. If there is not a fire to avoid falling into, you should work very hard to avoid falling into something else which might do serious damage. Like love.
20. Have fun. It might be hard. Or it might not be. Either way, if you work it hard enough it will come together between your fingers.
21. You are disgusting.
22. flip-flps. wrong move. you might miss the fun and you'll could wind up with a trans in pieces after you get back from the er. trans clinic not medical clinic.
k
seems like a show that is too good to miss, I'll try to drop by Sat or Sun or both to hang wich' y'all....
OK, got everything loaded, BBQ is still cooking
See those at Carols for breakfast, the rest see you there.
Jeff
What time does everything get rolling?

Just made it home to Corvallis. Plenty of driving for me 914 seat time is good for the soul . Good to meet some fellow world members I hadn't yet. Always nice putting a face to a screen name. Although please don't be offended when I don't remember your name next time I see you. I a middle aged old guy my memory for names is horrible . Thanks to Mark for doing a little work on my car while I was there too
Mark always does some work on cars. Great guy, great mechanic!
I am so spent. Nice cold added to the beat down this weekend.
Hollister, my ledger says you need to settle up. True? PM me
Jamie I'll rember yours evrytime I shift into 5th, thanks!
I had an awesome time at the clinic and learned a TON about our transmissions (even got to see how to set a new ring and pinion). Good food, great people, and some really nice cars. Thanks Dr. Evil! Well worth the admission!
Had a great time also, found the whine in my one tranny, bad bearing, the other just needed minor parts swap, so now I have two rebuilt trannies.
Thanks for the help Doc, thanks Mark for letting us take over his parking lot.
Nice seeing you Jamie, thanks for delivering the wheels.
Till next time,
Jeff
Made it home from the clinic last night about 5 pm. What a fun time!! I have to admit to being filled with dread when I completed the disassembly. (What have I done?!?). After all, I'm a musician and social worker, and came very late to the world of wrenches.
But Dr. Evil is very patient and walked me through the rebuild. There must have been a pound of sludge adding up the crude in the case and between the teeth on those gears. Doc's medical training came through as he called it tartar (as in floss all that tartar out from those gear teeth).
Thanks to Jeff, McMark, Andy, John, and all the other 914 guys for the loan of tools I didn't have. It was also great to see Jamie, all the way from Corvallis.
The 912 guys were great too, especially Reiner.
Most of all thanks to Dr. Evil for sharing his massive knowledge and talent. His vision and capacity for encouraging us to be the best we can be and keep our cars on the road is unparalleled.
Mike Knox
skeats, you should be proud of yourself. You picked up on everything so fast, were explaining the inner workings to other students, and tackled changing your ring gear with only limited verbal instruction from me. Well done!
I am sorry that you all had such a crappy time and learned nothing
I wish I'd been able to see the R&P setup. I didn't get into that with my gearbox, so it would have been completely new territory.

Useless without the tool
And the tool using the tool
It was an awesome experience.
Some things I learned:
Most 914's have shitty paintjobs.
All 914's have shitty rubber.
At 1.7L as our smallest engines, we are spoiled. 912 guys have underpowered and heavier cars.
Asphalt is a ready substitute for Copper Hammers.
I'm not the only idiot who constantly verbalizes his stream of conciousness, no matter how annoying it is.
Transaxle parts in Aluminum Foil Trays look a lot like barbecued meat.
Forget about buying special tools. Just weld bar stock to broken trans bits.
Transaxles aren't the delicate/precision mechanisms I falsely thought they were, they really are more like rock-crushers.
My cousin used to back his shop truck into his engine rebuild shop each night before closing up. I personally witnessed his back bumper bouncing a Ferrari and Bentley block across the room. He would just shrug. After watching Dr. Evil bounce mainshafts off the parking lot pavement it all seems to make sense......
I was joking with Jeff when we couldn't get the gears to drop off the shaft (treating it too nicely) that Mike would probably come over in a minute and drop it on the ground and they would fall off in one whack... and that's exactly what he did.
I think there are delicate parts in the trannies and other parts that will be around with the cockroaches after the apocalypse, it's just a matter of knowing the difference!
