purchased this car last night for the sum of $400. here's the good, bad and ugly.
1975 1.8
rear trunk, no rust.
front trunk/gas tank area. no rust.
pass door. $%*#@ speakers!
no cracks in dash or targa pad.
ouch.
broken windshield.
engine bay, including many leaves, spiders and probably mice. but... no rust that i can find
hell hole. surface rust, no holes. battery tray has surface rust but only pinholes.
beneath pass jack point, looks good.
a very creative muffler repair
so that's the story. since rust issues are very, very minor, i think i'll restore it rather than part it. first on the list is getting the engine started. it turns, but doesn't fire. next: the windshield i think. comments, suggestions and pointers welcome.

Looks like a good score, congrats!
definitely a keeper !!!
Andy
Wish I could find a deal like that. does I run? Turn over ? whats the deal with the engine
Very good score! You paid $400 for it? I will give you $500 and come pick it up. I love that color! Looks like a 75'.
Got a picutre of the whole car?
You know what I want to say here. . . . .
It looks great. I realize you cant swing a dead cat out on the left coast without hitting a clean teener selling for $5, but that looks like a clean one.
I wouldn't loose any sleep over the windshield. Very manageable do it yourself gig, or about 3 bills if you have to pay somebody.
Very good score! I like the Folgers muffler. Be careful when removing the trim pieces for the windshield. They bend reallyl, really easily. (I bent most of mine a couple of months ago removing them)
looks like a $4500 ebay car.
"You've done well, pilgrim."
(Name that movie.)
Nice score....keeper
Non running car + trailer = comealong or winch
Looks like a 1.8. I had a 75 1.8 that turned over, had spark at the plugs..but wouldn't fire. Here are some easy things to check on the ljets:
1. first, see if the injectors are firing, all you have to do is turn the engine on, with the distributer cap off open/close the points (don't use metal!)...you should hear the injectors clicking on/off
2. Is the fuel pump running? Fuel pump on the 1.8l's only run when air is passing through the MAF. If you don't hear the pump run while cranking, remove the air cleaner and push the flap in the MAF open..you should hear the fuel pump turn on. If it doesn't, check the fuel pump relay and check that you are getting 12v to the pump
3. also possible if you are not getting gas..that the flap in the MAF is stuck closed (they can do this from sitting).
5. If the pump is running and the MAF flap is free...your injectors maybe clogged. Squirt alittle starter fluid in the air cleaner box and see if you get some chugging...if you do either injectors are clogged, fuel line somewhere is clogged
Jim
The windshield is super easy to replace and a good used one is only about $100. If I remember, I'll take a bunch of pictures when I put in my next windshield later this week.
Are you gonna beat that fender or replace?
That's a beautiful car for the money and then some, and a really smart looking pair of seats! I recently picked one up for $300.00 here on the East coast, but your's is WAY! WAY!! WAY!!! nicer than mine wil be when it DONE! Let alone right now . . .
"yes, it's a 75 and it doesn't run. that presented us with some rather interesting logistical opportunities in trying to get it on the trailer."
We always put in a fresh battery and crank the starter in first gear, the car chugs right up the ramps no problem.
Luck,
TC

no idea, i'm open to opinion on that one. it's banged up pretty good, and i'm afraid the lip won't come out right, since that's probably the trickiest part. i'm very handy, but have no experience with auto repair really. i have a hunch i'm about to learn quickly

who's robert redford?
Checking this thread by title, I thought you found another Howard or Slits.
Aaron, congrats it looks like a great deal.
Could you post some more pictures of the plaid seats?
Oh, those seats!!! Sceamin deal. my friend!!! I got a 72 same color. minus those gorgeous seats... Ill be watching for the windshield picsas I need to do mine too someday ,along with a few other things. I got to drive mine home though... for about 9 times as much!!! In a sense you just made a lot of money.
Thank you - he reminded me of me
That is a real score. Worth at least $3K, more if you can get it running.
Sorry I couldn't get by in time today. Maybe tomorrow.
Remember, car has been sitting 20 years. Gas tank, lines and injectors are likely solid with varnish. Don't try too hard to start until fuel system is checked and cleaned. Gas tank will probably have to come out. Then either clean it or get another from Camp 914.
First time I have seen orange plaid. Plaid cloth inserts were common in '75's and '76's. I have seen gray/black, red/black, green/black and here is a mint set of yellow/black from a one-owner car from Eugene, OR that was purchased by one of our members in Florida last fall.
The lady had custom made clear plastic removable covers made to protect them.

I gots a mighty-fine gas tank that I just took outta my car.
Tip -top condition & cheep too.
Damn, I use ta have some pants that looked just like those seats. I wore them on the street too. They were stylish.
Dave
thanks guys, glad you like it. the color is starting to grow on me.
jp, i'll let you know on the gas tank. i might try to get it out today, i don't think there's very much gas in there. car needs a battery too.
dave, my parents have many pictures of me circa 1979 with gorgeous red and white plaid pants.

AA if you have the windshield removed or do it yourself. Be very delicate with the trim. It is NLA, except from Roger Bray in GB, and then it is not cheap. I bought four sets to put away for future projects. The first set came "bent" , filed a claim and I then instructed Roger Bray to tape the next shipment to thin veneer, they arrived safe and sound.
Looks like a good score. Lots of fun stuff to keep you busy.

cleaned up the engine bay a bit last night, sucked up a bunch of leaves and spiders, and here's a better look at the hole. no rust!

Looks like a great score, tub looks really gud!
Far better getting a decent body (rust) and fixing up the engine and fender dents than starting with a fabulous looking/running car that needs surgery underneath. Price sounds great. If you need a bunch of tools, go to harbor freight and pile up. Stuff is cheap there (some inexpensive, some cheap), and pays for itself pretty quickly for one use jobs like hammer and dolly sets etc.
Sounds like you got lucky on the trailer ride home, I trailered mine to it's new home backwards on the trailer and forgot about the weak rear trunk pin. Needless to say I have a custom rear spoiler (wrapped up over the roof, broke the hinges, bent up the engine lid). Ahh, I miss portland and scooting across that bridge.
The performance MJB muffler is kewl too, very stealthy hiding the coffee can further up the tailpipe
damn good buy man!!
Aaron you have done more with that car in 3 days than I did in 20 years. I hope you are enjoying your project. My new to me P car will now be enjoying my garage. I gave your brother a card for a glass guy that maybe able to help you out. Call me if you want to talk.

progress report! got her cleaned up a bit: hood off, interior out, windshield track cleaned real good, ready for new windshield.
here's how we flushed the fuel lines, which were full of 20-year-old gas and who knows what else. feeder line from gas can through new fuel pump (thanks camp914! ), through system, return line to milk jug.
... and here's what came out of those lines. yum!
got the rocker panels off too, for probably the first time in this car's life. found the usual pile of dirt, rocks and crap per side.
and here's the passenger side longitudinal, cleaned up. i expected much worse, this looks great.
and finally, here's my little helper.
that's all for now. mucho thanks to jim chambers for his help thus far. engine tune-up in the near future, hopefully we'll find out why the distributor is not sparking.

Deja vu!!
I had a 75 VW Scirroco with the same color and the same plad seat inserts.
At least I know the paint and seat material didn't go to waste when they dumped the 914 in favor of the Scirrocco
Wow, that is a clean car! I would just clean it up, fix the dent and enjoy! Doesn't look like it needs much of anything if you ask me.
making some progress. new windshield is in, $375 installed. guy said i got the last 914 windshield in the portland metro area.

AA did you put in new trim clips before the windshield went in?? Or are you going to use a newer black push in trim. Like the Honda and other new cars have?? Just asking.

installed new german fuel and vacuum lines in the engine bay, new fuel lines in front too. also new distributor, rotor, points, condenser, plugs. and engine still no worky
we've narrowed it down to the injectors i think. they don't seem to be getting juice.
~a
I just went through my ljet this past summer, it's great once you get it nailed. First thing is if you know if the injectors are firing? Best way to this is to remove the distributer cap...points closed!...and with your finger or a non-conductive material (like a wood) open and close the points with the ignition on. You should hear each injector firing when you open the points. All injectors fire at the same time. If you hear clicking then they are firing (doesn't mean they are not clogged and thus not letting in any gas!). If they are clicking, the next test would be to see if they actually are getting fuel. Your fuel pump on an ljet doesn't run unless the MAF flap is opened. Do you know if it is stuck closed?. Easiest way to test this is to remove the air cleaner and hold the MAF flap open with your finger or a screw driver and then turn the ignition on. You should then hear the fuel pump running. If the fuel pump is not running then check the relay or the fuse on the relay board. Also check to make sure you are getting 12v at the pump (remember..have to have the flap open to check voltage).
If you injectors are clicking and your fuel pump is running, then the next thing to check is if you are actually getting fuel. To check if the injectors are clogged you need to pull the injector (easy...you have that retaining bolt and they pull out) and place it in a jar and pump the engine. You should get fuel. NOTE::::::pull the coil wire to the distributer before you do this as you want NO spark! If you get no fuel you either have a clog elswhere or the injectors are clogged. Test each injector and if you get nothing there then start backing up to see if it is clogged elsewhere to rule out the injectors.
Jim
p.s. also check to make sure you MAF is wired up to the injection harness!
we've done quite a bit of what you have suggested. i installed all new plugs, cap, rotor, points, condenser, fuel pump, vacuum lines, fuel lines. additionally, the aux air valve works, cold start valve works, afm flap operates properly, injectors work (at workbench with 9v). fuel pressure is 37, compression is between 140 and 150 on all cylinders.
what's probably happening is that the injectors are not receiving spark, or if they do, it's intermittent for some reason. we'll figure it out today i think.
~a
if you do that distributer test...opening and closing the points with the ignition on...you will definitely hear the injectors clicking...should be every time you open/close the points. If that isn't happening you may have an issue with the resister pack (check those wires...it hangs off the battery tray) or the wiring harness itself. It's unlikely that you have a ECM problem as those things are pretty rugged.
update: it runs!
there were two culprits. craig laughlin put me on the right track for the first one. he suggested that it might be a loose wire on the resistor pack. this turned out not to be the case, however while i was down there i took a good look at the double relay. sure enough, on one of the plugs there was a wire that had worked loose, just happened to be the thick red wire from the battery. this explains why some injectors were working intermittently. the spade was making random contact whenver the plug or wiring was jostled. and we did a lot of jostling.
the other culprit was the oil filler neck. the filler cap on l-jet is supposed to have a gasket to help it seat properly. this gasket was missing on my car, so we went to the local hardware store and picked up a decent o-ring that will work until i find the correct part number. btw, anyone know the part # for this seal?
gotta give props to jim chambers who drove over to my house from portland on several occasions to help me test a bunch of stuff. he checked the dwell and set the timing this afternoon after i got it running. also big thanks to craig laughlin for providing a new fuel pump and putting me on the trail of the injector problem. and thanks to all who gave me many suggestions on things to check.
so after not being fired for 20 years, it runs! not super smooth yet, but we'll get there. now all i need is new tires, some body work, a new muffler, and...
~a
Aaron:
I have a 73 that I'm going to take the windshield out of to refurb the car...The trim looks good, scratched but not bent...
I am not going to reuse it so it's yours if you want...The down side is you have to come take it off yourself (Just south of Seattle) as I have had no luck removing without bending in the past...
Let me know quick because I want the windshield out in this week to start on the clean-up...
2-OH!
installed new fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel tank and sender. uninstalled rats nest of relays and wiring for the aftermarket fog lights.

whew! lotsa work to get this one roadworthy. during the brake bleeding process (which btw yielded brake fluid that was chocolate in color) i found out the mc was hemorrhaging fluid badly. here's a pic of the pedal cluster sitting in a lake of brake fluid. fluid had also migrated down the center tunnel. mucho fun...
after cleanup, which involved a shop vac, dawn detergent, and lots of water.
while i was under there, i also noticed a different paint color on the bottom dash metal. hmmm.
anyone know what these wires do???? they weren't plugged in. i'm especially curious about the round one.
the spring for the clutch pedal is broken, so i need a new one, or a new pedal cluster that's not coated with brake fluid and beginning to rust.
jp would be so proud, i built myself some 12" cubes out of 3/4" plywood to set the car on. jackstands make me nervous too.
that's all for now. new 2.0 liter exhaust and ss exchangers comes in a few days, i need to get off my butt and remove the stock exhaust system.
~a
AA while youare in there you might as well throw a 19mm master cylinder at it. The round plug is for the EGR counter which sits up under the foam in the passeger footwell. The other wires I believe are for the optional center console gauges.
Looks good kepp at it.
The dash color is normal. most 914s had a different color dash inner structure than the outside car color.
CCLINDUMPWASTE
I'm guessing the wires are for an appearance group center console (all except the round one). Buy yourself a pedal cluster rebuild kit, it will have all the springs and bushings you'll need.
Looking Good

floorpan refinished and pedal cluster rebuilt with the great bushing kit from pelican. roll pin gave me no problems. this was before, with a moat of brake fluid. yuck!
flaking paint and rust was ground off, masked, primed with etching primer and painted body color from rattle can.
used a wire wheel to grind down the cluster parts, repainted the ones that were originally black.
cluster, rebuilt.
partially installed. dead sexy!
Very nice work. I'll bring mine over tomorrow. Where did you find the nice matching rattle can paint?
jim, i got the matching paint mixed at bob's paint land up at the intersection of 99 and hwy 99. great place, been around for years. i was there to get the etching primer and thought i might as well see if they can match signal orange. they had a manual with all the paint codes so it was a done deal. it's not exact, but good enuf for the floorpan.
I have the window trim out of my car. I ain't puttin' it back in.....come & git it if you still have the need......cheep!
Beautiful resto on the pedal cluster double-a, now you need one of Engman's aluminum pedal boards (of which I'm a proud owner ) so you can peel back the carpet and display your handywork.....it'd be a shame to hide it!
VERY NICE!!

update, for those who care. more progress towards getting this rip van winkle back on the road after 20 years in hibernation.
purchased: new ssi 2.0 heat exchangers, muffler hanger, heater ducts and bursch muffler, all from hph (thanks rich!), for a complete swap from the old, ugly, and poor quality 75-76 exhaust to an earlier 2.0 setup.
ducts needed some cleaning. or maybe they didn't... i just felt like cleaning them.
cleaned and test-fitted. they'll never look this good again.
heat ducts primed & painted with high-temp paint.
installed, with much help from my wife, who is 7 months pregnant. yes, i can confirm that the paint on the bursch begins to burn off in approximately three minutes.
on saturday morning i dropped the car, started the engine, and took her for the first self-powered drive in more than two decades. runs and handles good! now the real work begins, making it shine.
~a
yeah i had a bursch header on my 82 924 and the spray can or what ever they used just burned right off... She is lookin good though- the car- glad to see another making progress.

Craiglist 1500.00 end all your troubles.
That is one fine 914 glad to see you doing such a great job on it.
the saga continues. lots of fun stuff added. look what i got in the mail
koni sport struts installed, with adjustable springs. the old springs were terrible, and had a curve in them from the car sitting for 20 yrs. right front shock insert was rusted to the strut. took me two days, half a can of penetrant, and lots of hammering to get it out.
finally got the new zimmermann front rotors installed. also had front calipers rebuilt and polymer coated red by goldline brakes, a local outfit. the quality and craftsmanship are superb.
euro light kit, and euro-spec h4 headlamps. very bright!
momo steering wheel (i already don't like it - too small) and nice combo gauge from palo alto speedometer. installed led gauge illumination while i was in there. oh, and i also installed a weird looking shifter that i found somewhere
closeup of the rennshift.
engine purrs like a kitten now, thanks to new, correct bosch plug wires (old ones were poor quality). that solves my persistent engine stutter.
also installed a passenger side mirror, and new rocker panels and rear valance too. next up: oil temp and pressure senders, and sway bars.

So I went and started your thread from page one, WOW!
What a great job and great find you have there.
Oh and congrats on the upcoming(?) addition to your family.
thanks! we're about five weeks out now, scheduled c-section on june 7th. another boy, making the total 2 so far.
this car has been a good project, i've learned so much. for example, a week ago friday, i fried my ignition switch and had to learn how to read a current flow diagram to find out what happened. things that seemed so daunting before are starting to make sense, slowly. i highly recommend the "project car" as a means of learning stuff.

i haven't located a fabric that exactly matches. i think i'm going to opt for the gts le mans seats anyway, so originality is not a big deal. i bought some groovy 70s orange striped stuff (from 1978 ford model year) at sms auto fabrics, we'll see how it looks in a couple months when the seats are finished.
i made a mockup that should be close to what they'll look like.
