914World.com _ 914World Garage _ My car is in Panorama December 2013!

Posted by: orthobiz Sep 20 2013, 03:21 PM

Edit 12/14/13: I started this topic a couple of months ago; the article has finally come out. Everyone here is a part of my 914 journey, so thanks to all!

Paul

Original thread:

Sunday I have a 45 minute phone interview for the article. I was approached at the Parade by Panorama staff, wanting to do a story on my car (and me).

As some of you know, my 1974 won Best In Class for Preservation, air-cooled cars older than 1977, less than 1000 miles per year.

For whatever reason, I'm nervous!

Paul

I have noticed much more 914 content lately.

Perhaps because Pete Stout is a 914 owner? idea.gif

Manny told me once (Fort Worth Parade) that my car was conflicted. Track vs. street. Even thought I told him it was by design it was apparently all for naught smile.gif

Beautiful car. Congrats on the interview!!!

Yes. Then sign up for the Escape to LA event. Right now I'm the only 914 going... sad.gif

Nice car. Too bad it's only driven less than 1000 miles a year.

My car has just over 26,000 miles now.

I know what you're saying, but I believe I have a higher responsibility owning this car. When I bought it, I sent it to Brad Mayeur (sight unseen!) to go over the car and had a lot of mechanical work done (clutch, resealing, etc.). During this phase, he would ask questions such as, do I want a passenger mirror added. Most of the time, I would say no as I wanted the car to be as original as possible.

These cars will only be "new" once and unmolested cars are hard to come by. They certainly aren't making more of them. But getting all of the positive comments at the Porsche Parade has changed my perspective on ownership, as did spending at least a couple of hundred hours cleaning and preening it before the event. I feel like I am driving a museum piece and I worry more about it. Will I get in an accident, will it get a rock chip, etc.

So, I have just purchased another car, a red 1974 1.8 liter California car that has been repainted, that doesn't have original speakers, has polished Mahle wheels, Euro turn signals, redone leather interior, period "incorrect" radio, backdated bumpers, etc. I am committed (at least now) to driving it, enjoying it, letting rain fall on it. I pick it up this coming Friday and am driving it back (over 2000 miles!) to Michigan. In fact, the odometer is broken so I don't even know how many miles are on it.

But my orange car will be driven infrequently and kept as clean and original as possible. I have driven it 4000 miles in 7 years of ownership and will continue to take it out on clear, sunny days.

914 ownership and membership in the 914world has done so much for me. Call me crazy, but people like me need to keep cars like this in pristine condition. So please don't feel sorry for us (I'm not alone), we're having a blast! (BTW, no offense taken, I'm just yakking away.)

I was in Cadillac this week on Wednesday for business & thought about calling you for a cup of coffee, but got ambushed with time. Next time.

Great news, your original 914 is special, you are helping the 914 $$$$-market. w00t.gif Here's a few photo's from Parade.

Look forward to your article.

I'd love a story on original owner cars and have suggested it to Mr. Stout, starting with Mike Robbins, though unfortunately he sold his Speedster not that long ago.

Paul, This is a fantastic story. The car is stunning. I Love the interior colors. You are a true "Steward". Very cool that you have purchased another teener to drive and enjoy in a different way. I recently met a 914 guy by the name of Bob Davis. He has a beautiful 73 2.0 that he has owned since new. Hearing these stories and seeing the people and cars behind them is priceless. All the best.

Paul, your car is magnificent. I owned a new 914 in 1973 and seeing a pristine example takes me back to that time when mine was new and every detail was amplified, and the paint was so deep you felt like you could walk right into it. I'm glad you're preserving this one and have acquired another to experience a 914 as a driver.

Just one question I had from one of the pictures at the Parade...do you intentionally index the icon on the cigarette lighter?

Posted by: JawjaPorsche Oct 29 2013, 04:23 AM

Paul, your 914 looks awesome! I am like you. I like originally. To see a 914 look like it just came out of the showroom brings a big smile to my face. I purchased my 914 new and it has a zillion more miles than your 914 but it I have tried to keep it looking original. The badge and euro tail lights are the only real change to the appearance but I guess that is a personal preference.

My 914:

Expect to see a fair share of 914 related articles into the future...

Great article!

As a long-time PCA member (40 years), I've definitely seen more and more interest in the 914 over the years. Where we were first not accepted as real Porsches by PCA, more and more folks are realizing the great combination of handling, mileage, and storage capacity offered by these neat little cars!

And yes, I also seem to sense that Porsche AG seems to avoid acknowledging the 914 like a bastard stepchild.

I really like the new format of Panorama. There articles every month on cars and owner's journey with these cars.

Now that the articles include our beloved 914, Pano has raised the bar.

Congratulations Paul. I was also pleased to see Brad Mayeur featured as well. He has supplied parts and advice for my 73 2.0 restoration.

Paul,
We are soo proud of you raising the 914 bar. You worked hard for the Pano award. pray.gif Great job @ Parade, you deserve the honors.

Wow, what a car...what a write up for the 914 in Pano...I'm not sure I've ever seen that many pages on a 914. I think that's b/c of the quality of the car.

I've been a PCA member since 95'...my only regret is not joining in 77' when I bought my 1st 914.

btw: I didn't know chrome bumpers were available in 74'...I thought they all were black

Posted by: chrisz01 Dec 21 2013, 01:06 PM

Great article enjoyed the read. Nice to see Brad M mentioned. I bought my first 914 through him on consignment. I just had some things sorted out by my mechanic and he was impressed by the condition of the car. Brad M represented the car honestly as I purchased the car trusting him. I am out in a CA and had not seen the car in person. It's fun being in the 914 world.
