914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Thermostat replacement

Posted by: 19732.0 Oct 13 2013, 07:21 AM

I have a '73 2.0-liter with a bum thermostat. I've been shocked by how difficult it is to find a replacement. It doesn't need to be an original bellows-type unit, I just want something that works for a not-insane price. Any recommendations?

Not sure what you consider an insane price, but check out this guy if you haven't already:

I've been pleased with mine.

As for non-bellows type, factor in fabricating mods to make them fit, so for me I went the extra $ and went original for a quick, simple install.

There is a guy on Samba that sells USA made new ones for $100. I've bought two of them and they work. Ray

How about this thermostat from Automotive Atlanta? I assume it doesn't have to be modified to work on the 914 like some do. Is this a new item?

That thermostat will fail in the closed position sad.gif

The one linked above is what I purchased 6mos ago and it's awesome. It will outlast the original one.

That thermostat is a VW part that will fail closed instead of open. You want fail open. $120 is pretty cheap insurance.
