914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Can I make my own heat exchangers tin?

My 1.7L heat exchangers' tins are being eaten away by the rust bug, would it be possible to make my own box-like (heat catching) tin and weld or somehow fasten it over the exhaust tubes that seem to be in pretty good shape other than surface rust?

I'm restoring my car (going down to bare frame) and I would rather save my money for more important things, for now at least.

Anyone done anything like that?

you either can or you cannot, it all depends if you have the "skills" and tools IPB Image

is it a "do-able" project, yes...the hardest part will be getting them to fit without rattleing too much and making noise.......

Can it be box-like or does it have to be form fitting like the originals?

box like is fine as long as you have plenty of clearance between the motor and the ground.

there are a few aftermarket 911 and 914/6 headers that have a simple box to provide heat....

I saw those and that's what got me thinking about doing that to my 1.7L heat exchangers.

I think I have a set I can sell, not too expensive. Let me look at what I have and tell you how good (or bad) they are.

I saw some shell halves at a 914 specialist in Germany, 914 Erstazile, I think was the name of the guys shop. Nice guy, unique parts.

Just make sure the exhaust pipes you are encasing are perfect. We don't want to send flowers to your funeral.
