914World.com _ 914World Garage _ How much does your....914 wiegh?

Posted by: Root_Werks Dec 22 2004, 03:37 PM

Ok, Joe posted what his 914 wieghed which really interests me now that I see his under the 2000lb mark. My 914-6 wieghs in at 2275 with 1/2 gas, glass bumpers, full int, 16x7&8 fuchs, heat, spare tire, tools in trunk, roller blades in rear trunk etc. Certainly not a stripped down car, nice driver.

So what do other scale in at? I wanna know! IPB Image

This is my weight with me in the car, helmet, fuel, etc...

So I should be around 1900 dry. Since then I removed some stuff like the headlight motors and buckets but I added coolers, lots of ss oil/fuel lines, etc.

Car has full 8 pt cage, full metal bodywork and bumpers, all lexan windows, etc...

I like the pic, that is cool. Yeah, here is something I have wanted to try: Pull the headlight motors, use the struts like the GT's do, but with the cable, I was thinking about having something rigged up so you could push it, release the lights(up), pull it, moving the lights back down. Simple and save lots of wieght I would think. Plus driver friendly. I have some plans already, just have to try it out. IPB Image

Is that an X-ray of your car? Cool!

I don't know if mine would show up in an x-ray. IPB Image

hmm at the local recycling center (Alhambra, Ca) there's an actual scale built into the ground to weigh a car before/after recyclable materials are removed....i should give it a try....before/after my scrawny IPB Image is out of the car IPB Image

I measured 2087 with about 1/4 tank and no spare. Also
I have no more tar. But done using digital bathroom scales
and levers, so any error will be multiplied. Anyway, I wasn't
concerned with the absolute numbers, just correct corner
weights. (corner weighted with my weight in driver's seat,
but I subtracted to get the 2087).

2065lbs

- 3/4 tank of fuel
- 14 qts of oil with front cooler
- 2.7 with 40IDA3C Webers
- Roll bar
- 225/50/16 245/45/16 on 8"/9" BBS RA wheels

Still has:
- glass windows
- all interior tar mats

2345 with spair, no jack/tools, full interior, all glass, 3/4 tank fuel, and 165# of me in the drivers seat. Also has the Brad Mayeur long repair kit, the extra heavy duty set, which I bet adds at least 50-75 to the total. Corner balanced to 49.7/50.3, but it took the spair and gas to get to those #'s. Oh, its a 1973 (heavy doors) 2.0.

How much weight would you loose by:
light weight battery?
headers+ supertrapp vs heat exchangers and bursch?
light weight gear drive starter?
no interior tar, no undercoating?
13 x 9 rims w/hoosiers?
early doors?
early interior?

(I think thats about all the DSP mods that could be made)

How would you best remove the tar/undercoating, short of "the dip" ?

2189 lbs w/o driver

Pluses:

+ 3.6, 915, front mounted oil cooler

+ brad meyeur long kit + misc additional chassis bracing

+ steel GT flares, 16x8&9s

+ early steel chrome bumpers

+ passenger side mirror IPB Image

Minuses:

- early 73 doors (no reinforcement [lighter], but late window mechanism)

- full, but minimal, lightweight leather interior (no tar or sound dampening of any kind)

- carbon fiber front and rear lids

Striping down the interior and going with lightweight lids can save a lot of weight...

Pretty interesting reading about the combinations of parts we have on our cars.

I like the easy cheap stuff, Floor tar (Gone), under coating (which still have) Dumping the stock heat exhangers, Thought about the super trapps IPB Image
Engine sound pad gone and very heavy.
fiberglass bumpers getting weight off the ends is always good.
12 lb battery
Hmm Honey I need one of them lite weight starters IPB Image
How much can you get off the trailing arms?
Been kicking around the idea of Lexan rear window.
AND I really want fiberglass trunk lids.
Deleting the head light motors would really help they are heavy. Pull cable and just spring up? I wouldn't mind stopping to put back down. Come on just design it I'll do it. IPB Image

As per the scale at a nearby scrapyard, a couple of years ago: 2,150 lbs. With the 2.2 /6 engine, no driver, I believe the spare was in.

IPB Image Yeah, this rocks. I like reading about what other people have and have done to thier 914's to loose or gain wieght. I know my next projects will include stiffinging(adding wieght) and glass lids (taking some back off). Also maybe even moving to early doors? IPB Image I dunno, maybe I should just have Paul come visit for a few hours. I put my car on the scales at work and it weighed in at approximately 1400 lbs. It's a stripped tub with no interior, no engine, no transmission and no fuel tank. But it did have the following when it was weighed:

Sheridan Wide Body Kit
Kinesis 17" Rims w/315 & 285 rubber
Chassis/Control Arm stiffening kit
911 Front Suspension
Six Conversion Parts (bulkhead mount, oil tank, etc.)
Front Mount Oil Cooler
Pop ups w/motors, wipers w/motors, etc.
Partial Roll Cage

I'm hoping with the engine, transmission and Renegade Hybrids radiator that I can keep it under 2000 lbs.
