I'm easy, I have close to 50 days of leave so can take the time off. I will go with whatever date is chosen I just need to know so I can make sure they don't schedule me to teach any classes on those days if it is not during a weekend.

I will also need total count of people so I know how much pig to make. Since I can't dig an imu in my back yard I'll make pig Hapa Haole style and then bring it up the next day in a big ass crock pot and roaster to keep it warm.

It's going to be pretty darn cold in Feb. We may have to push all of Scotts projects out to work in the heat???

I haven't used the last rebuild yet blink.gif

If I can find another one cheap I'm in for a rebuild. If not I'm a lookie-loo.

SOT- hijacked.gif Scott- I have 4 FG Patrick fenders I need painted. If you can work them in. If so, will probably mail them to you in next month or so. Will be talking.

If anyone wants to go but needs a tranny to rebuild, shoot me a pm. I have a spare sitting on the shelf. My schedule is pretty tight nowadays, so I probably won't make it down.

Posted by: Cupomeat Nov 8 2013, 07:24 AM

I'm in, plus maybe I can get my dad's 901 (911) trans then as well, if not before.

Posted by: billh1963 Nov 8 2013, 08:29 AM

I'll plan to attend as a spectator/helper. I still have my two rebuilds from last time!

Then again, I think I may have a spare transmission I can bring for a rebuild.. idea.gif

Posted by: Philip W. Nov 8 2013, 08:46 AM

i do have a line on a supposedly "good" 901 trans that a guy is giving me. might be worth $300 to bring up and crack open, idea.gif
put me down as "probable".

Are there any weekends that month that do not work for people? I need to get this submitted. The sooner the better.

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 8 2013, 09:37 AM

Also, I am always looking for "spare transmissions" so let me know if yo have any. I can buy then at the clinic, or trade some tuition/parts for them.

So we have weekend of Feb 1 and 8 thrown around. Are there any weekends in Feb that do not work for people? If no one speaks up, I will pick one and stick with it smile.gif

Sign me up! I'm a lurking early 911 owner.

Mike, we corresponded last year about a 902/0 4-speed I wanted to convert to a 5-speed. In the meantime, I found a 902/1 with the AFSMX gear set I wanted. I want to rebuild the latter at the clinic. Seller said it worked fine, but after it arrived at my place and I put it on the bench, the selector shaft is "frozen". headbang.gif

I can bring the 902/0 with me if you're still interested in the parts. (I also have a 911/01 I can bring.)

Do you want tuition in advance?

Posted by: Cupomeat Nov 11 2013, 05:14 PM

I'd rather it be the 8th or the 15th, otherwise I am out. 1st is a big work event and 22nd is little one's bday.

Thanks, Ed

Posted by: stephenaki Nov 11 2013, 06:48 PM

Just had to move my TIG welding class to the weekend but I can miss a class so I'll be there on the 8th with some Kalua pig.

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 11 2013, 07:55 PM

billsimmeth, cool. I am interested in parts and cores so bring them.

The clinic is the 8-9th. This is set.

I would like tuition later. Dont sweat it. This will happen regardless of number so I can wait until about a month before. That way if anyone has a change in plans between now and then I do not need to be bothered with refusing refunds wink.gif tongue.gif

Dr. Evil where is the best place to get the seal kit? Also, is there a way to add a slightly taller 5th gear without breaking the bank? Not thinking about a gear close to what you would do with a V8 but something just a bit taller.

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 14 2013, 05:45 PM

Mike, seal kits are available at all venders, but I try to patronize the little guys that support us so GPR is my usual go to. Dont wait until the last minute. smile.gif

The options for a taller 5th are basically a flipped H gear. I do not have any currently, but am always looking for people. Prices are all over the place for these and urgency of need is why larger prices are often met.

If you want further help, PM me and we can chat.

Ran across http://www.9magazine.com/dr-evils-901-gearbox-rebuild-clinic-and-why-you-should-take-it.html and thought it said a lot.

As a question, do we get a copy of the DVD or other material to study before hand?

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 15 2013, 07:26 PM

My DVD are always available for sale. Whether or not you would benefit $25 worth by studying it before the clinic is up to you smile.gif

Thanks for posting that link. I always forget about it....now I added it to my sig.

Obviously the trans should be pretty clean before starting the rebuild, but what about inside. I have drained the gear lube already, moving it around to try and get it all out. would there be any harm or benefit to maybe putting a quart of kerosene in to clean out the remaining lube?

Posted by: Dr Evil Nov 26 2013, 09:17 PM

Nope. Drain it is all you need. Dont pressure wash it more than a day or two before rebuild as moisture will get in there and start to flash rust parts.

Posted by: balljoint Nov 26 2013, 09:23 PM

What is Scott's home address? I will want to drop off my bag and my sousaphone before heading to the shop.

He can't get out of the ward, the gates are locked and his ankle tracking device tends to lock down the facility when he roams outdoors due to an incident with some jelly, a penguin a banana, and the mayor of Toronto.

I am still planning on coming to the clinic. I have a 914-6 with an A,F,N,S,X gearset. The trans is not numbers matching. I appears to be a later model and a side shifter. It has been modified with a 930 LSD and 911SC CV joints modified to fit the axles. There isn't anything wrong with it and it shifts very smoothly. However the S,X is not to my liking.

You had recommended to me in an earlier email of replacing the S,X and going to stock V, ZD or with A,F,O,X Flipped H. Have you got these gear sets and how much would they be.

When do you want the $300?

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 27 2013, 11:25 AM

Hey Rob,

I just sent out a group PM to those wanting to attend. Thanks for hooking me up with Paul. I hope to get to him soon in Jan. I will see if he will let me pull the other drive trains smile.gif

My gear inventory is always fluctuating and I can see about if I either already have them and they are not spoken for, or if I can find them for you.

Posted by: type47 Dec 31 2013, 07:12 AM

How can I/what do I need to do to inspect a trans to see if it's worth rebuilding? I have 2 trans to choose from to bring to the clinic (was hoping root would do one) and would like to avoid a surprise when I'm there...

oh, and icon_bump.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Dec 31 2013, 08:13 AM

We can rebuild anything. I will bring spare R/P, BUT it would save you time and money to pull the side cover and look at the teeth on the pinion. If one is galled, pick the other. If both are galled, congrats, you need a replacement R/P.

Posted by: crash914 Dec 31 2013, 02:44 PM

what? its not tonight? oh well, I will just go to first night Williamsburg...

Posted by: type47 Jan 8 2014, 08:46 AM

with this about a month away, time for a icon_bump.gif and maybe propose a GB on gasket set and a question about what tools should we bring ...

... and root, yea you ... time to take a weekend off and go to this ... biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 8 2014, 08:56 AM

Regular tools.

I guess we can GB seal kits. I will check with my supplier for cost. At the very least I tend to get free shipping.

What time does this begin?

Posted by: Dr Evil Jan 19 2014, 08:16 AM

9am

Posted by: Mblizzard Jan 20 2014, 09:35 AM

OK so I am preparing for the good doctors clinic. My trans is pretty clean so no pressure washing or other cleaning was required. The oil was drained and was fairly clean but only because it was almost empty when I purchased it and it now has less than 1,000 miles on the new oil. Got my seal set in hand along with a few extra parts I have on hand for the transmission.

I thought I had a noise in the ring gear that the Dr. said could be the ring gear carrier bearings. Pulled the side plate off and the bearings were noticeably scored and darker on one side so I have new ones ready to go in. Sorry I forgot to take a picture. But the ring gear and pinion seem to be in good shape. So I am just waiting for the opening to find out if there is anything else wrong.

So getting to the point finally. What all to bring? The Dr. said bring basic tools which I would take to be the standard metric wrench and socket set of common sizes up to 19 mm, the standard screw drivers, pliers, BFH, adjustable wrench, seal puller, and a set of punches. I am bringing a pack of cleaning rags (the 100 pack), zip lock bags for parts, lots of disposable gloves, cleaning spray, hand cleaner, and I will have extra tyvek suites if anyone needs one for the build. Oh and beer.

I guess I am wondering if we will have bench space to work on or if we will be working on the ground? Also do we need any special sealants?

So can anyone think of anything else we may need? I am sure I am missing a few important things? Looking forward to seeing everyone.

And a cover, oil will be everywhere. Also, watch the Docs video if you have it.
Make sure you dont lose the back up switch doohickky that falls out when you remove the switch. And count the number of seals when you disassemble, in case Doc forgets to tell you.

Posted by: puffinator Feb 4 2014, 01:44 PM

Mike Blizzard had earlier posted a list of items to bring to the clinic based on Dr. Evil’s guidance plus there were a few more suggestions. This is the list so far:
- Seal kit
- standard metric wrench and socket set of common sizes up to 19 mm
- standard screw drivers
- pliers
- BFH; I am guessing that is a big f….ing hammer
- adjustable wrench
- seal puller
- set of punches
- pack of cleaning rags (the 100 pack)
- zip lock bags for parts
- lots of disposable gloves
- cleaning spray, hand cleaner
- old clothes - Mike says he will have an extra TYVEK suit
- Beer
- Folding stands and board or folding table
- Sealants of any kind???
- Ground cover to catch drippings
In the Dr. Evil DVD the following additional items are used during the rebuild:
- Micrometers
- Big chisel
- Metal straight edge
- Vaseline
- 400 grit sand paper
- JB Weld
- Soft hammer
Anything else?

What is the solvent? Any of the water based solvents like simple green may cause rust if left inside too long. I flushed my out with a good spray of WD-40 after cleaning. Yes WD = water displacing.

Dave has had Scotty's shop wired for satellite video feed for a few years now. Multi-camera, motion sensors, infra-red . . the whole deal. Pretty good quality too.

Great clinic! Thanks Mike and great to meet all of you. A long day but well worth the price of admission. I couldn't insert images of my trans here but did post them in my ongoing nuts and bolts restoration timeline, here.

Have you ever been to the states?

What a weekend! Meet some great people from 914 World, had some excellent pig, and walked away with a Dr. Evil rebuilt trans. You can love or hate the Dr. but there is no denying his skill and knowledge regarding the 901. If you get a chance this is a very worth while clinic to attend. I learned more about transmissions in a weekend than I had learned in the 50 previous years.

Thanks to everyone that helped me out and I hoped I help a few of you in turn. Can't wait to install this trans!

After seeing my first gear dog teeth I have no doubt it will be better. But for a 40 year trans it was in pretty good shape.

OK, as promised here is the Kalua pig recipe, it is really very simple.

Ingredients.
Pork shoulder or butt - I used about 16 lbs for this event and used 20 people for my planning.
Liquid Smoke - Hickory flavor - I usually use about 2 bottles per 4 pounds. Start with one if you have a small piece of meat and then add more based on your preference.
Rock salt - sometimes called ice cream salt
Water.

Preparation.
1. Score the pig; checkerboard cuts across all angles of the meat. They don't have to be very deep about 1/2 a CM in depth. This helps with soaking up the juices.
2. Large roasting pan with a cover; if you don't have a cover you will cover it with tin foil.
3. Add a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water to the pan, sprinkle some rock salt in the bottom of the pan.
4. Place pig in pan, pour a bottle of liquid smoke all over it and then rub some salt on the top and side of the pig. Go easy on the salt, it is easy to make it saltier but harder to cut it if it is TOO salty.
5. Cover and place in oven that is at about 300 degrees.
6. Let it cook. Check on it ever couple of hours and, as it starts to get loose, pull it apart and into the juices. You need to watch the fluid level and not let it get dry. You can pour in more liquid smoke about 3 hours in. You may need to replace the tin foil part way through, keep an eye on it.
7. It will take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to cook, when if falls apart in the pan, it is done. SERVE and enjoy.

You can also use a crockpot or roaster to do this. Let me know if anyone has an questions. chowtime.gif

I am making this! Thanks Stephen. Amazing how something so simple is,so great.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend with the company of fellow Porsche enthusiasts! I don’t say 914 as there were a few 911 people who stopped by and assisted with cleaning as well as disassembly and re-assembly of the transmissions. Not to mention one individual who brought his 915 box for a rebuild, I think he may have gotten my donor trans differential, not sure but someone got it. beerchug.gif

As for Dr. Evil or Mike of the shiny cranium hide.gif , I truly enjoyed his caustic and quick witted repartee. A man after my own heart with an intellect that juxtaposes the medical and mechanical realms of concept and experience; an oddity to some but truly a diamond to those who wish to learn more about the inner workings of our beloved vehicles. Although he exudes a short and acerbic exterior at times, it doesn’t take long to see that this is merely an act and that he really does give a rat’s ass about what you are doing with you gearbox. He is not a ‘professor’ that will stand before you and lecture you on the finer points of gear ratio’s, tolerances and specifications. No, he is a go too guy that focuses on getting the job done but, will take the time to explain the finer intricacies of what he is having you do if you ask.

The price of admission was worth it, not just for the expertise that Mike brings to the clinic but for the opportunity to meet many of the forum members and put faces to names. I can’t thank Mblizzard (Mike), James, Steve, Tim, Zach, Eric and other’s enough for the great time and assistance as we went through the weekend.

My hats off to Scotty B for putting up with us in his shop as I know he had to move some things around to make up the room. You know you have a free meal here in the Norfolk area anytime you’re down here Scotty! Hell, I got a guest room if you ever need it.

Hopefully, my teaching schedule will allow me to make Hershey’s now that I am stateside and I can link up with many of you again and maybe meet some new members of the group. Would I recommend attending Dr. Evil’s clinic? Hell yes! But, only if you come with an open mind and round shoulders. If you get offended easily or have a set of preconception on how he is going to do business, stay home. Mike is not for those with pussy sensibilities. lol-2.gif

In closing I have one thing to bring up. Is it me or does Dr. Evil kinda look like an Amish proletariat waiting to take over the US akin to Stalin or Lenin… blink.gif

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Feb 9 2014, 07:41 PM

Stephen - the OINK was awesome! I also appreciated the rice.

Theo and I had a good time. Doing my part to raise future car nerds. He did drop the "oh shit" comment on the way home. Had to explain that he was not in trouble, but what happens during guys weekend can't come back into the house. LOL!

Did not spend as much time as I thought I would heckling the builders. Lots of great work was getting done. Always fun to hang out with everyone. Sorry I checked off to bed somewhat early. Still not feeling quite right after the illness earlier in the week. Get really tired really quick.

Made it back to York PA this afternoon in record time. 3.5 hours (ie- no traffic on 95). Usually its a 5 hour trip.

Scott - Erin busted up laughing when I told her that Theo called you a dick. ;-)

It was great meeting everyone. Thanks Stephen for the pork and rice, excellent. Also, thanks for the differential (901 Box). You have to love Dr. Evil, very entertaining and incredible knowledge on the transmission. I hope to do it again when I get the other trans out and will eagerly await his next local clinic. Anyway, great weekend and great bunch of people. Steve

Thanks to Mike (Dr. Evil) and Scotty for leading and hosting the event, Stephen for the really good pig, and bozo914 (I didn’t catch the name) for the great chili. And thanks to all who helped. It was a super learning event and it was amazing to watch Mike tear open a transmission and toss the parts out helter-skelter as we newbies were trying to remember how it came apart – no chance!

What a great day and excellent to hang around with like minded (a.k.a. "Crazy") 914 owners.
I truly appreciate the abuse I took from Mike and his willingness to give much to our community.

Great Pig (thanks for the recipie)

Lots of fun!, Thanks Dr. and all!

Hats off to Stephen for the pig. I had a great weekend and met some really great people. It is amazing how much I learned. Being able to watch the Dr. work and then have him explain how things worked was amazing.

I hope I was helpful to those that I tried to lend a hand to. I think I did it wrong a couple of times on my trans before trying to help others. But of course there was that first gear incident on Stephens trans but we are never going to speak about that again! idea.gif

I would do it again this weekend.

Put the trans on the motor tonight.

Had a pretty good start thanks to you Dan! There will always be things that happened in the life of a 40-year old car that will make you wonder how that happened. But I have just been scraping away some of the rough spots and polishing it a bit. Well a lot when it comes to the trans. But all the trans needed was some first gear dog teeth and a few scynros.

Hope the Dr. gets your trans sorted. I consider myself an average shade tree mechanic but this guy is friggin awesome! Learned so much in a couple of days it was unreal. Even if you don't want to build a trans, doing this clinc just puts you in such a good position to understand the trans and prevent any big issues because you did not have the right information. If he comes to TX you should go!

Got the motor in last Monday and everything all tweaked and dialed in today. Took the car for the first drive with the fresh transmission. What a difference 5th gear makes!! Very smooth through all gears. Thanks to everyone for all the help and knowledge they provided. This car has been off the road since 1991...Now on to the fun stuff!!!

Posted by: Mblizzard Feb 16 2014, 08:19 PM

Got my engine and trans back in the car. Have to put everything back on the topside but should be ready for a drive this week.

Going to have to teach my wife to drive the car now that the trans is in good shape. But I guess I know how to rebuild it so I have no more excuses.

Drove the car for a short time this afternoon. No grinding into first! Shifts like a dream. Just a little catch on reverse going into second at times. Needs a little adjustment. Have not driven it at highway speed yet.

But I did notice my reverse lights are on all the time. I did not think there was an orientation to the wires. But I was wondering if I should swap them around or look for something else?

The lights are defaulted to off. You need either a short between the two wires in the plug outside of the switch, or you probably installed the pin under the switch backwards and it is always pushing the switch to ON. There is not order to the wires.

I bet it is the pin. If I helped you install your backup switch at the clinic you may want to check it because I think I did them the same way.
