914World.com _ 914World Garage _ The Official 914 Ashtray Cupholder Order Thread

Posted by: rnellums Nov 4 2013, 10:33 PM

Alright everyone! Ray and I are finally happy with the design quality and are planning to begin printing units Tuesday! This thread is going to be the official order thread, and orders will be filled as quickly as possible in the order of posts up here. Payment is preferred through Paypal (I’ll give the email for paypal out in a PM confirming your order) when it is ready to be shipped, but mailed check is also acceptable. Please, no payments until the item is packed and ready to be shipped.
There will be four models available, each priced at $45 shipped. Each model can hold a 32 oz “Big Gulp” comfortably, and excel equally well at holding more traditional 16oz coffee cups. The units will be printed in black ABS plastic, assembled using ABS glue. Each of these designs takes approximately 9 hours to print, allowing us to print two units per day. With the amount of interest in this item some will likely be waiting 30 days+ before delivery. The models are described below:

#1 The 914 Ashtray Cupholder - $45
This model has a printed front face and is intended as a direct slide-in replacement for the stock ashtray.

#4 The Stealth Ashtray Cupholder (Up to 73') -$45
This model re-uses the stock front from the ashtray, making the cupholder indistinguishable from a stock ashtray when closed.
There are differences between ashtrays! See http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=81276&hl=ashtray for more information. I expect that prior to mid-74 the ashtray fronts was held on with screws (100% compatible with stealth design), and after 74 they switched.

74 and LATER ASHTRAY CUPHOLDERS are now available!!

IMPORTANT: before placing your order, verify which ashtray you have (either a screw on ashtray front, or one with funny rivets).

There will also be several accessories available. The list of accessories, along with short descriptions of each are listed below.

#5 Soda-holding Insert -$8
This clips into the ashtray cupholder allowing it to hold a soda can or small water bottle

#6 Phone Holder -$15
This accessory clips into any of the ashtray cupholders and rotates to lock in place. I currently have holders for the following phones, but will be continuing to expand the models available.

An anticipated accessory eventually is an adjustable holder, but no design work has been completed on it at this point.

In summary, the prices are as follows:
Any 914 ashtray cupholder - $45
Soda Holder -$8
Phone Mount - $15

Below are some videos of the ashtray in action. These represent the worst case of use for most users, as the test vehicle is a 2.4L typeIV, with the Koni suspension set to full stiff on bumpy roads! I did not go easy on it!

I'll take a #1 with the pop can holder option & the Samsung s4 mount. My question is will it accommodate the case on the phone? Or will I have to remove the case to use the current setup?

The mount is designed for a phone without the case, so a phone-in-case will likely not fit. If you want a custom size, i can make one using dimensions you send me after the main ashtray cupholder production run is done, but I can't verify the fit will be perfect(there is a lot of tweaking involved to get the fit right).

Road testing this tonight, but the picture is misleading. That can is a tall boy. The can sits down in a 2" deep pocket that should hold it pretty well.

No worries! I'll take it as it is. I will want an adjustable one when they become available. Should be much easier for you as you can just carry the one adjustable for all the phones. Thanks for taking this on biggrin.gif . I've got a cup holder now but this will be great piratenanner.gif

The first 6 are shipping out!

Ray and I are going to wait until we hear back from the first six customers on how they like the quality before heading into production full swing. It is my hope that these first buyers will post their honest opinions of the product in this thread to provide a customer's perspective on the cupholders.

It is very important to us that people are happy with the product, so I want to be very clear about the level of finish of the 3d-printed parts.

Due to the way the printers work, the top of each part looks like a topographic map, and the build layers are visible. This is a 3d-printed part and looks as such.

Ray and I feel that the resolution/finish of the printer leaves something to be desired(is not that of a production part). That said, for us, the usefulness of the design far outweighs the aesthetic compromises.

I couldn't be more happy with how it works in both my 914's.

How's production going? Any feedback from the first batch yet?

Posted by: naro914 Nov 21 2013, 11:07 AM

I got mine on Monday and really like it, though I have not really 'tested' it while driving. I am not bothered at all about the 3D build layers because I got one of the 'stealth' versions so the only time you would see the surface of the part is when its pulled out...and to be honest it looks MUCH better than the old finish of my ash tray anyway!!

To me, the usefulness, quality and value FAR exceed any concerns one would have on the look and feel, which honestly is not bad at all anyway.

Here would be my only comment...you need a fairly large mug/cup to fit in without sliding through. No wimpy 'small' size Starbucks...though I think a pint glass fits nicely... beer3.gif

(Gosh, look at those cracks in the dash!!)

I got the package last night.

After looking at the product for a few minutes I have to say I was impressed with the engineering/design.

The use of the lap joints/rabbet joints really make for a strong unit. I gave it more than a just little lateral pressure and doesn’t flex.

Aesthetically it is fine. I ordered a black unit and it is true black in color with a uniform color throughout. Since I have seen 3D printing many times before it is exactly what I expected. If anyone is unsure then they should order the “stealth” unit as after the original front is attached it is unnoticed.

The fit in the dash was great – it slid right in with enough of a friction fit to let you know it isn’t sloppy and will stay put. The tab on the rear of the unit is a nice touch to keep the holder from being extended too far. I used an Allen wrench to turn the tab to the locked position (between 7 and 8 O'clock) after the unit was partially inserted. You could at least provide the wrench like the Chinese furniture companies do – just kidding!

I love the product and am now motivated to go to my storage unit and get my spare ashtray unit with the removable front. This will be going in the near Concours Willow green ’72 car that I hope to complete by next Summer.

Thanks a million, I hope this helps – cheers!

Posted by: ben*james Nov 21 2013, 09:54 PM

I love it!

It's not so close to OEM looking that you would mistake it for being factory but it is tastefully done and seems to function very well.

My vote for best new 914 product of the year.

(My balls thank you. No more scolding coffee burns)

Posted by: rnellums Nov 23 2013, 08:17 PM

Ray and I are rolling into production! Several more will be headed out monday!

I have attached a couple of images of how the locking lugs work. You use an allen wrench to turn the lug from the 3 o'clock to 7-8 o'clock (straight down on stealth models will hit the heater controls behind the dash).

With regard to the stealth models, I want to make sure everyone knows that they do not come with a front. You will need to re-use the stock ashtray front portion.

I'm looking forward to getting more feedback!

You didn't miss a thing. I don't wan't so take any payments until the items are printed, packed and ready to go. Seems to me like that avoids a lot of drama in case Ray and I have to stop production (like if the printer breaks).

I'm e-mailing people on a per-person basis once i have printed and packaged their part. Then I give them the paypal info and get their shipping info.

Posted by: billh1963 Nov 27 2013, 06:53 AM

I'm late to post a review but I'm very please with mine! The fit is good and it fills the ashtray hole nicely. I won't bother posting a picture since others have done that already.

I don't drink coffee so I can't comment on the fit of a coffee cup. However, it does hold a water bottle with a little persuasion smile.gif

The only issue would be the texture on the front,,, that will be a matter of personal taste.

Overall it's a great product and I'm sure improvements will be coming at a rapid rate over the next few months!

Posted by: rnellums Nov 27 2013, 09:13 AM

A bit of bad news. Looks like the controller board on the printer bit the dust last night dry.gif . We are on the horn with customer support trying to get this issue resolved, but it might take a while. I apologize for the delay everyone!

A bit of bad news. Looks like the controller board on the printer bit the dust last night dry.gif . We are on the horn with customer support trying to get this issue resolved, but it might take a while. I apologize for the delay everyone!

Sorry to hear that Ross.

Maybe a bit of self fulfilling prophecy?

"Seems to me like that avoids a lot of drama in case Ray and I have to stop production (like if the printer breaks)."

Good luck - cheers!

I got my #1 Basic Cupholder today. Just in time for my road trip to Tangerine on Friday!

I have never seen a printed part before so I was really impressed. The engineering is great, the fit, perfect, and the little allen stop couldn't be easier.

I think I might like a stealth version, but the front of my ashtray to transfer isn't that great so I think this is the better version for me now.

Thank you. thumb3d.gif thumb3d.gif thumb3d.gif

I got my Soda Can and Iphone 5 holders today... all I can say is Wow... Everything fits very nicely, very snug and is very solidly built. Very, very impressive!! The Soda Can accessory works great for small coffee/water bottle/other small drinking objects....a must have IMO

They have done an awesome job with all this.... my 911 buddies are jealous!!

You should consider printing these with the Taulman 645 nylon filament. I've used that a lot lately, and I am really impressed. It's tougher than anything I've printed with before, abrasion resistant and flexible. Short of taking a box cutter or lighter to the printed parts, they really cannot be destroyed.

Ray is really interested in that! Thanks for the tip! Even with the material we are using out parts are strong, I can't imagine how strong they would be with Nylon.

I received my cupholder yesterday and spent a few minutes installing it today! Although it looks good and I am sure it will function as advertised I wanted to put out an issue that I had when it was put in!

I first tried to slide it into the ashtray slot and it started to bind up. When I got it to go all the way in I tried to pull it back out and the back lip kept hooking on the top of the ashtray track frame! I took some sand paper and smoothed out the edges on the back of the holder. It worked pushing it back in and out a few times so I decided to put the stop down to keep it from sliding out beyond where it is supposed to go! I then pushed it back in and pulled it back out and it stuck half way again on the lip. I pulled hard and it wouldn't budge! I started wiggling it and pulling it and WAM it popped all the way out braking the stop off!

At first I was a bit miffed but I decided to make one out of metal and ground some more off the lips!

It turned out fine, and works great, but I wanted to let other people know that if it sticks you may need to grind a bit of the lip off the back edge like in this photo!

I do like the holder.....thanks driving.gif aktion035.gif

I have a Droid X2 which should have the same dimensions of the Droid X. I found a Solidworks model of the Droid X at grabcad.com (I use a version of Autodesk Inventor that cannot open the Solidworks file there but a colleague uses Solidworks and can convert it so I can check the dimensions). Did you get the dimensions from the above poster for his Droid X?

I am a design engineer by trade and was going to make my own phone holder for my 914 either by CNC or 3D printing (have access to both). However, I saw you had done the grunt work of the process and I being a good and proper lazy engineer I would rather order a good working and tested product than spend several hours of time and wasted materials fabricating my own.

If you do not have dimensions for the Droid X/Droid X2 I can design the mount for one and send the 3D CAD files to you (we can work out the details of all this later I am guessing). Let me know if you are interested or if you have already done the design work for the Droid X/Droid X2.

Hey Ross - I got my stealth cupholder the other day, thanks for the quick shipment!
It fits the dash great and I'm pleased with it. The only issue I see so far is my latch is getting hung up on my wiring for the "fasten seat belt" light underneath. I was in a hurry to get off to work and it's freezing in my garage so it'll have to wait for another day. Thanks for making a cool product for us!! Jon

I just got mine today and installed it. Nice product, very happy with it. Slid right in no problems. I just need to figure out how to reach back in there to turn down the latch, so it doesn't come out. The Soda Can insert is a must. Soda cans fits very nice as well as my small water bottles. I probably shouldn't have ordered the iPhone 5 adapter since my iPhone has an otter box case on it.

You should be able to use a 4mm allen wrench to turn the lug to the locked position (7-8 o'clock looking towards the front of the car)

I'm glad to hear you like it!

Got mine as well and I agree with the comments. However the iPhone adapter is useless and maybe to must of us. The issue with the iPhone is thickness,; one must remove the case To fit. I have the slimmest case and no go. Must of us have a case and it's inconvenient to remove.

I agree about the thickness. The holder must be a snug fit to prevent the phone from sliding out during bumps, and I have optimized the tolerances to be tight enough for the phone body itself. I really need to put together an adjustable adapter.

I'm going to hold off shipping any more phone holders until I have a suitable adjustable phone holder.

Thank you for the input!!

I'm sorry that this hasn't been going smoother. The order of sending got thrown off because there was a shortage of accessories being printed (soda holder etc.), so I sent out some of the surplus cup holders to those who only wanted the cupholder. Posted by: rnellums May 4 2015, 11:04 PM

Well I'm afraid to say the printed cupholders don't look like they'll be coming back, but I think I have arrived at a viable replacement.

Introducing the next ashtray cupholder - out of stainless!
Attached Image

Attached Image

Model 1:
Uses the stock ashtray front from a 73 or earlier ashtray, looks totally stock when it's pushed into the dash.

In order to get enough throw to fit a cup, the rails on the ashtray mount in the dash must be modified (filed) to be shorter. Does not effect the ability to go back to a stock ashtray in the future.

Model 2:
No modifications to anything. Remove your ashtray and slide in the cupholder, I think it looks better with the face painted black and the background silver personally.

I'm looking for 4-5 people to trial test a few models at a discounted price before I go into full production.

off topic a little but I turned my ashtray facility into a map light fixture that, when pulled out, has the Hella three-position switch therein (from the backpad), allowing the driver or passenger to open the map light tray (ashtray) then to choose to turn on the light / but in any case, in passive mode, it simply illuminates the cab when the doors are opened.....

The Stainless versions are probably going to land in the $75 ballpark depending on how much time it takes me to tack weld them together.

The plastic ones were a royal PITA for me to assemble (essentially glued together) and I was having some issues with the printed layers separating.

What it came down to was it was a $45 item that cost $50 in my time to make and I wasn't happy with the quality.

Posted by: bandjoey Sep 1 2015, 10:43 PM

Received mine today and it's made out of the left over steel from the Battleship Texas! Solid Stainless and in good taste. When the car is a small coffee can of rusty metal this cupholder will be sticking out of the can.

Are these cup holders still available?

Sorry to say that these haven’t been made in a while. If someone else has interest in carrying on the projects I would definitely provide the files.

Not trying to distract from this but presenting as an option - no affiliation - I found this the other day. Just not sure - when attached to the seat rail - if it would be high enough off the floor to be effective. https://shop.autoracingtechnik.com/collections/accessories-tools/products/porsche-911-carrera-911sc-993-964-944-968-cup-holder
