My project is in peaces now, trying to clean up any surface rust and taking some peaces to be blasted. I'm going to have all the 996 suspension parts soda blasted so it looks new. I tried to clean the aluminum suspension parts but blasting is the only way to get all the areas clean.
Have you tried engine degreaser? I've found that 25% bleach, 75% water is pretty effective too. Scrub it on, Scrub more on...scrum more on....then rinse. Oven cleaner may pit aluminum though, so be careful.
Looks like a very very interesting project. 996 rear suspension grafted on a 914 body. Please keep us posted.. Thanks and good luck with this project!
isn't there a phosphor etch that removes surface rust and leaves a light coat to inhibit rust?
this stuff http://www.ospho.com/
Anybody known where I can find some Ospho in San Ramon, CA area? I've got some areas I need to get treated/worked on.
Awesome Cleaner from the dollar store is, well, awesome! Combined with a power washer, the aluminum parts will clean up very well.
