914World.com _ 914World Garage _ looking for a place to refurbish wheels

Posted by: SirAndy Dec 25 2004, 01:47 PM

hi all,
i'm looking for a place to refurbish wheels in the greater bay area ...

anyone have a lead for a good & cheap (haha) place?

i have a set of alloy ronal wheels, 8" x 16 and 9" x 16 that currently have a "chrome" finish on them that is flaking off.
i would like to go with the polished look and black centers.

PS: here's how they currently look ...

Highly recommend Wheel Techniques in Campbell.

If you are not in a hurry and want an outstanding job (but likely more $$), try Harvey Weidman in Oroville (530-534-7903). He will arrange local pickup and delivery - way less hassle.

See if you have any truck wheel polishers in your area. They will usually do cars wheels also.

the polishing of the rims will be easy, it's how to remove the chrome finish in a cost effective and non-damaging method???

If you want a bit of DIY , Call your local chrome plater and tell you want to remove the chrome from alloy wheels they should do it . Its a electrosis method. they have to keep an eye on em thou, I have had a few chrome sets stripped, Cost 125.00 for 4 wheels they come out sqeaky clean. Then they need polish and paint.

Someone once told me that once a wheel is chromed, it will never polish out right. Something about the way they have to chrome it. Kind of like chrome plating a painted bumper. It doesnt work well. I hope it is not true but I thought I would pass it on to you.

The Fuchs I had done were fine , But theyre forged, Cast wheels maybe a different story.
I do know its a time senstive process with Alum.
