I have 2 LeMons race cars One is a 1974 BMW 2002 and the other is a 1973 914 2Ltr. Has anyone seen or heard of the BMW engine being installed into the 914? I see that Kennedy has an adapter plate. The reason I'm contemplating this swap is it would be nice to have the same power plant on both cars.
Does it turn the right way? Does it fit in the engine bay?
There was another 914 with a Rabbit engine.
I have owned many BMW 2002s and they are great cars.
Did you know that a 2002 SEDAN with an iron block, 4 seats, rear side glass, an iron diff, etc, etc, weighs exactly the same as your 2 seat, aluminum or magnesium case engine and transaxled 914? 990 kgs. Pretty good engineering.
Did you know that when they raced the BMW 2002s in Trans AM, SWB 911s (which don't handle nearly as well as 914s) blew their doors off? Betcha you didn't even know 911s were sedans, right? SCCA said so ....................
The Cap'n
Don't get me wrong, I love my 914s that's why I have two, a 2.2 six and a 2.0 four.
However,
The owner's manual for my 914 says acceptable oil consumption for the air-cooled engine is one quart per 600 miles.
The owner's manual for my 1970 2002 ti (factory eurospec 11 to 1 comp, dual side draft Solexes) said "Maximum engine speed is 6,500 RPM. DO NOT DRIVE AT A CONTINUOUS 6,500 RPM FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS".
For the Autobahn I guess.
