Hell yes I'm in! Timing is perfect as I need to be in Vegas for work the following monday. So instead of the company spending money on my plane ticket. They can pay for most my gas evilgrin.gif . I think my daughter Kiana will be coming with. Looks like a great week for me. I'll fly her back to SLC from Vegas. Then fly my wife out to Vegas later in the week. She'll keep me company on the drive back through CA the following weekend piratenanner.gif . I'm stoked

I see it as about 1400 miles each way. With a 4 and somewhat heating heads i may just see you in passing. But i am tweaking towards rich to get the heads happy. And eric is either going to findv me new shocks or perhaps evaluate the car in person. My moms ashes will be riding along. How she loved the four corners region. I think Seattle was never the same for her, beautiful as it was even back in the quiet days. She wont be making the return trip.
Here it is just going to sit beflow zero for a week, so when my block of lectures ared done yet spring is a minimum of two moths away, well. I hope to be ready. Last year i missed out.
Gonna try to make this work. I have the summer tires on. Need to change?

I thought it went through santa fe, not abq. Route 66 that is. I admit to being vague on this.

Posted by: rnellums Jan 17 2014, 11:22 PM

No, it ran through ABQ (Central Ave. is old Rt. 66), although for some reason there are some historic rt. 66 signs near Santa Fe too... Is a cruise up through the Jemez on the Docket? I know the owners of a Music camp in Jemez that might let us rent out the camp (individual cabins, etc. if that would be of interest).

Your car will be done by then....no reason not to go. driving.gif

My white car won't be making the trip...its being taken apart and body work started....once the engine mount is welded in and oil tank holes cut it will get painted before I put it back together....so no trips for that car this year....unless I make RRC. shades.gif

But I did buy a "running" car so I would have something to drive, it may look ugly....but if I can get it mechanicaly sound, or close...I'll drive it driving.gif

Donald - we already know you are crazy so that tactic didn't work. (FAIL)

We already know you have driven twice that far by yourself in a 914 before. (FAIL)

We also know you live in Memphis which is on I-40 and Albuquerque is on I-40 so there are not even any turns for you - just head West. (FAIL)

You also know that if you come Mary will make her special dessert for you and I will have a bottle of your favorite Scotch...

Do it!

By the way I have a spare 914 if someone wants to fly into Durango and drive it down (some assembly required so you might want to add an extra day....). smile.gif

Rt66 in New Mexico changed at least once (I think twice) over the years, so it's a matter of when you're talking - the very old, original route used to swing down to Los Lunas about 20 miles south of Albuquerque, then back up through the ABQ, up to Santa Fe, and finally over towards Arizona. Hey, it's called the Land of Entrapment for a reason!

I am advocating a Jemez run (actually up to the Valles Caldera for pics). Even if it isn't part of the group plan, one could always do it anyway. It's a great twisty, scenic drive (once you get past the Jemez Pueblo) and can even be made into a loop to go through Los Alamos and into Santa Fe to return to Rio Rancho/ABQ via I-25, though that would take up most of a day if one wants to stop in either place.

Personally, I might not have a car to drive during the event, but I could be a front-seat driver/guide/annoyance! happy11.gif

I have a snow blower on its last legs if that will help.

I am on the fence because I built the engine and tranny last year and wonder if the car will make 3,000 miles. And also something else could fail I suppose. Can I use the summer tires, or is it going to be up into the frozen passes?

But, tell me it won't be snowing down south and I could be persuaded.

It won't be snowing down here in late March. Unless it snows, of course. rolleyes.gif The drive is planned for a trip into the local mountains, but I doubt we'll do that if there's a chance of snow. It's hard to predict in the high desert, but it's very rare we have snow (or anything like it) at that time of year. Some of the other mountain passes I can't say. confused24.gif

ALL!! I talked to the owner of the local race track and he said we could have 2-3 hours of track time if we can round up 10 or so cars. The cost would be $50 per car. Yeah, you read that right...$50. beerchug.gif The only catch is that we would have to do it Friday from noon-3 as he has races after that and then on Saturday.

I can be there no sweat and it would be a blast! Is there enough interest? If so, I will reserve the slot. Please post here if you are interested and can make it Friday!

I'm interested if I can get there early enough. A definite maybe. I'm in process of installing new shocks, springs, bushings, and front sway bar. It will be a good opportunity to test out the new hardware.

It's actually a decent track, if a bit bumpy. Not terribly long or complicated, but entertaining with its symmetrical pattern. Start/Finish line is on the longest straight, probably a 1/2 mile, into a decreasing radius left, through a shift-while-you-steer mini-S challenge, then a hard right, another S, a tight increasing radius left onto the back straight, and then all of the above in reverse that is the symmetrical "other half" of the track. That's my memory of it anyway, but it's been a while, and I've only watched, never driven it. EDIT: I know I'm missing some curves in there. Never mind, it's fun.

As for me, I don't think my car will be driving at that time, and I have next to zero $ to get it tuned and set up (not as in racing set up, but it does need to have equal camber instead of where it is right now). I might not have the time either - things are very much in flux. But I don't need to be there, YOU guys do! It's a pretty fun course, from what I've been told, worth checking out.

Posted by: JRust Feb 20 2014, 07:58 PM

Maybe if it's a car issue. We can dbl up drivers on cars? I wouldn't mind doing a co-driver thing with mine confused24.gif

I think everyone who can should make this event. When it was in Arizona, it always seemed to involve Flagstaff; I lived there so I would go meet the people wherever they were staying. Had a lot of fun and the group AWESOME! DO attend and venue being planned seems to be another great one.

Cannot make it this time since my 914 is down and out from the theft we had in Barstow while moving to Oregon.

Okay people we show 12 people attending. Looking at the list it seems they all have 914's. So how about track time. Wouldn't you enjoy geting out on the autoX track. Just for fun. I could care less who is faster than who. It's just fun to get out on the track & see if you can improve your own time. It's a blast & unless your insane your not going to break anything on your car evilgrin.gif . Just DO IT driving.gif . We need 10 people to step up so we can get the track. At $50 each it is a cheap to have the track for 3 hours. For that matter if we are short a few people. Can we just each pay a little more to do it Mike? We are talking $500 for the track for 3 hours. If there were only 5 of us that's $100 each. I'd certainly prefer to spend a little less than that. So let's get at least closer to 10 confused24.gif

I called but didn't get an answer. Maybe a busy time there. I haven't seen above freezing since I went to Seattle at Christmas, so I am ready. beer3.gif

Now! I need suggested spare parts. I have a ton of extras and I do not want to bring them all. But, what should I have?? Need to take a break from the -6 build anyway and start planning. Trying to decide whether I will be able to hear the radio or not. If I head down the Mississippi it will have to be Uncle Tupelo for a day or so...then maybe the AM band. In that case I really should attach the rear window so I can hear anything at all.

I will try calling again.

Changed my oil last night. Getting everything set for my trip. I'm a little limited for space. Still deciding between the spare saver & a full size spare. As limited as my space is I will probably just do the spare saver. I just need to get my flat tow Kit installed tonight. I bought a truck in Idaho. So I will be grabbing it on the way back from Route. I also need to put my travel kit together of tools with a couple parts. Not as worried on parts with the suby.

I got the 914 out of storage yesterday. First week this year with a thaw. Alternator (new) isn't producing the voltage I expect on the gauge. Grounds are good, several new regulators have been swapped. New harness, new battery. New belt with tension. I don get it, but suspect maybe the gauge?

SInce I am covering a lot of ground I would appreciate suggested spares to take and also if there are folks along Route 66, possible havens in distress. With such a simple car, I figure that the breakdowns are likely to be big if at all.

Stock car with FI or carbs? When I had my 2.0. I always had 2 spare injectors, Points Cap & Rotor, Clutch cable, Accelerator cable, Fuses, A small floor jack & 2 small jack stands. Oh yeah a Spare is always a good idea biggrin.gif OF course tools to be able to change any of those out is good too confused24.gif

Hi Jason,

It will have to be the red one - the Willow car is in the same state as when you last saw it but it is my project this year. There is talk among my 914World friends that they are planning an intervention (spelled weekend build) to get the car done. smile.gif

I am trying to get some locals to make the trip - though a few of them might be tail draggers. I know you wouldn't mind!

Man glad I've had my teener out driving this week. Took it to work today. Stopped for gas on the way home & it wouldn't start. MY ignition has been squarely. Replaced the switch twice with no change. I can turn the key & it will turn over no problem bt not start. If I wiggle the key a little while turning. Some of my gauges get a pulse & all it fires & runs. After My key side of the ignition was a little sloppy. After getting gas my key didn't turn as well. I've replaced everything but the key side of things. So glad I had this happen 30min from home. Instead of mid trip. I've got a complete column out of a 73 to replace it. Going to look into new options too. If anyone has one they recommend shoot me a PM

Strange that it turns over... Maybe in the START position, the starter is obviously getting power but not getting the 'ON' position power. I wouldn't think the tumbler would matter, unless the nub on the end that turns the switch is faulty or twisted or something.. Seems once the starter is turning, the power should be on to the rest of the car. But I don't know squat wink.gif

Sorry about the missing pieces. I have to leave a little earlier and we have wiring, new headlights, bilsteins (thanks Eric) and the bloody wiring to the gauge isn't reflecting the real voltage at the battery. Also Dakota Digital CHT gauge. Trying to decide between keeping the vdo, which i mistrust and installing the new cht on the other bank or replacing outright, keeping the thermocouple under #3. Leaning towards more gauges.
I know some of you could do more, but i am not looking for more than 500 miles in a day. My back isn't up to it.

Also, i have no idea about when and where to meet. I promise not to bring snow. driving.gif

I'll be glad to see them in person! Good to see your slumming it in the 914 this trip evilgrin.gif

I installed my push button to fix my ignition issue. Spent probably half my day screwing with stereo stuff. Man I am rusty. Been about good 15 years since I've done any car stereo stuff. Added an amp & have the option of a sub when I want. Stuck it in the front trunk just to see if I could notice it. I'll be doing some kind of custom box soon. I like a nice complete sound. While I like the sound of my motor. I've got a good 45+ hours of driving this trip ahead of me.

I also installed my flat tow kit. I really need to do a hard wire deal that uses my cars lights. Rather than bring my magnetic lights. One less thing to haul around with me. I need my flat tow kit as I bought a truck in Idaho. So I'll be towing my 914 for about 10 hours on my way back home.

Local update:

WX: It's been chilly and rainy (unusual), and now it's windy and warming up (the usual). Early NWS forecast for the weekend has it in the mid-60s. Will be colder, perhaps as much as 10-15 degrees up in the Valles Caldera (aka Valle Grande), depending on cloud cover. Should be a great and beautiful driving weekend! I scouted the road not too long ago and it's in very good shape. (During the Atomic Ramble it was stripped and covered with gravel, not driveable for our purposes, so the route was changed to the Cedar Crest run that we went on).

Blah blah: Due to other commitments, my personal attendance will be limited I regret to report, and my car won't be at the event for various reasons, much to the relief of Wills I suspect. rolleyes.gif I should be around Friday (lunch at Sadie's is a great idea!). I don't know about Saturday. I'm hoping to have time to make the drive up with someone (it's one of my absolute faves!) as either a passenger or with my FJ Cruiser as a sag wagon. At this point, the dinner is out for me. sad.gif Can't have everything, where would I put it? By the way, I'm a good weight penalty for all of you FI big-6 guys!

The Drive: If I can't go on the drive, LizO can guide I'm sure. It's really only two turns to make. The host hotel is on Hwy 528 which you can take north to Hwy 550 at the very north end of Rio Rancho, then turn left and go to San Ysidro where you turn right on Hwy 4, and follow it up. Los Ojos Saloon is right on Hwy 4 in the middle of the town of Jemez Springs, and the Valle Grande is also on Hwy 4, with some turnouts for photo op moments with the gorgeous valley behind you. So if anyone gets lost, let me know so I can laugh at them. lol-2.gif

It should be a blast! aktion035.gif

Anybody on my drive down want to caravan?

Hey! I'm actually on this thing! (MIDTERMS ARE DONE!!!!)

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend! I have to work until 5 on Friday (The only way to get saturday and sunday off.... couldn't swing all 3. Yay restaurant life.) so I'm out for the Sadie's lunch. Have some stuffed sopas for me. Delish!

(Yes, Sadies is where the locals go.)

I can navigate on Saturday for the drive. I will not be taking the 914 on the run, so we'll have a sag wagon. (pesky registration and insurance. blink.gif )

Hopefully I'll get my car to the parking lot on Friday night though!

Over and out!

Jamie - US550 runs behind the house so we are taking it all the way down. What time will you be going thru Farmington, NM? We are planning on leaving the house between 8:30 and 9:00am Friday. and Farmington is just over an hour from us.

Our plan is to be at Sadie's close to 1pm.

If I am stuck working a full day then I may not leave SLC until early friday morning. Be cool to make the Sadies lunch but is probably doubtful at this point. I'm sure I have a Jackpost cover no problem. I'll dbl check lenses but I don't think I have a set nice enough to grace your car. Last nice set I had were Euro's & they are on Pederson's car.

Not for me.
I have to get some southing in first. Well the vdo cht on 3 reads more than 100 degrees higher than the Dakota digital on 2. Could be the position, but so far out of 4 kinds of new vdo products i have purchased of late the only one that seems reliable is the clock. Put it this way. Just as it was in the summer after running an hour or two in 75 degree weather, i am seeing 450 from the vdo. But this time it is about 30 outside, and the oil temp is not even started on the way up, and yes. The cht reads exactly the same. chair.gif

From Oregon? I doubt it. I've done several drives in the winter between here (Rio Rancho, NM) and Boise, and I've yet to need chains - then again I've always done it in a 4x4 vehicle of some kind. Besides the potential trouble spots in southern Idaho (Mountain Home, etc) and northern Utah (from Snowville down into Ogden), the mountain pass between Provo (or Spanish Fork, really) and Price might be a troublesome area as well as the area south of Moab around Monticello and over into Cortez, CO. Still, while I've seen some weather in those areas, only in the dead of winter has it been necessary to use 4WD in snow and ice. I doubt it would be sticking this time of year. I don't think any of the areas require snow chains like northern Idaho or Utah or Colorado (they never have any such posted requirements in New Mexico, even when they're needed).

I bet you'll be fine. Safe journey!

EDIT: Just a suggestion on the end of your route - I find the road down from Cortez to Farmington (the old US-666 - I think it's US-491 or some crap now) down through the Navajo Nation is very bumpy, to the extent of rattling your teeth, especially in a 914 - if you want to find out if you've got anything loose, that's your road! I find it much more pleasant driving, weather permitting, to leave Cortez heading east on US-160 through Mancos and into Durango. It is high altitude that way, so weather can be unpredictable, caveat emptor. From Durango, it's south on US-550 all the way into Rio Rancho (through Aztec and Bloomfield of course).

I agree with Jon. US-160 into Durango is smooth and fast (you might be ready for smooth by then) and then US-550 South to the destination. The temperature should be near 60 on Friday so it should be a good drive.

Car started shifting tough last night. Not sure whats going on yet. Dropped it at a shop to take a look for me as I've got a busy day of work. Just tough going into gear. Clutch isn't slipping & still seems to engage fine once in gear. It is just getting into gear is tough. This is a suby transmission too so not your typical 901. Hoping it is something simple. Clutch shouldn't be toast & doesn't feel like it. It doesn't have but 15k for mileage. I know how to drive a stick so it's not like I am burning up the clutch. Hell maybe it's just low on fluid. Although I haven't had any leaks that would explain that. Hopefully it's something simple the shop will find. Going to be a bitch if I need to pull my drivetrain tonight to replace the clutch. Especially since my lift is tied up with a 914 with no suspension at the moment sad.gif

Thanks. I made it as far south as Peru. Illinois. Late start, back roads and still just a little worried about the temps. I have the higher quality gauge on #2,, rather than #3 because i have the vdo still under plug 3. Vdo sits at 450 and the dakota digital at about 300. Made double sure it was not centigrade. Air is still just above freezing.

With the new bilsteins it runs like a top but i need to lower the front some. Didnt have time with the dozens of little things before launch. Fixing the door pull on the left and adding trunk lights will have to wait.

Oh yeah - it doesn't always start. I have 3-4 starters at home and this one has a fussy solenoid. Fortunately i decided to throw a hammer in the tool bag this morning. rolleyes.gif

Hey worn! If you're coming into town via I-25 heading southbound (I think you'll be coming in that way), it's best to get off at the Bernalillo exit for US-550 and head west through the town of Bernalillo into northern Rio Rancho. From there, turn south onto Hwy 528 (aka Rio Rancho Blvd) which will take you straight to the host hotel, about 10 miles down or so.

If you're taking I-40 into town and then taking I-25 north to get to Rio Rancho, it's best to get off I-25 at Alameda and head west into Rio Rancho. The main road most mapping software will send folks through is Paseo del Norte at I-25, which is under heavy construction and could be in major delay mode. Not recommended. Not for anyone, for that matter, so to all reading this that may be considering using Paseo del Norte, beware.

This reminds me that we should have a network of 914World members that have volunteered to be on a rescue list. I know the 356 guys have one. So if someone is broken down and stranded on a cross-country drive there is a published list (or a list the admins keep) of people that can help if needed.

Pelican is fedexing a new starter to the nearby hotel where i am holed up in. Have to hike back to the car because i discovered all of my books are still there and i dont watch tv.

The starter solenoid is irreparable without a shop and the new starter arrives sometime tomorrow headbang.gif

So it may be late on thursday i am back on the road. The car was running sweet, but that would be a long way, with festivities beginning friday. I will keep you posted, i have little else to do.

I don't think I would carry a spare starter either. I do carry a spare throttle and clutch cable put that is about it. I might re-think the starter now...

Thanks Brant,
I figured that i had started rolling twice and hitting with a hammer three times and my luck had run out with food, an albeit limited supply of tools, but lots of cheap hoodies and a $49 hotel room. That's the way road trips go. You have be ready to think on your feet. And when all else fails call AAA, get the car someplace safe and hop on an airplane for home. I've had to do that once. Came back with the trailer.

Another time I had to rent a car, drive home, get the trailer and fetch the car. It happens. Costs a few extra bucks and a couple days extra off work. But it part of the journey.

Safe traveling! aktion035.gif

Yes - or even better just stay on the 160 to Durango, then pick up the 550. That 140 is mediocre if I remember it right from September. The bumpy stuff is on the 491 south of Cortez.

What Jason said. I would stick to US-491 all the way into Cortez (bypassing Dolores), then US-160 all the way into Durango (through Mancos, passing turn off to go to Farmington on the local routes you have selected). https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Moab,+UT/1465+Rio+Rancho+Blvd+SE,+Rio+Rancho,+NM+87124/@37.1306874,-108.2443422,9z/data=!4m24!4m23!1m15!1m1!1s0x8747e1e59ab82d8d:0xb32b17af1d5c42d!2m2!1d-109.5498395!2d38.5733155!3m4!1m2!1d-108.5895868!2d37.353948!3s0x87396fbef2f4e6b9:0x3d10d6801afd4472!3m4!1m2!1d-107.889729!2d37.2700616!3s0x873c029b7f8f35fb:0x8fcad00166a24d72!1m5!1m1!1s0x872270e3f651a9a5:0x32d32739732dfcf1!2m2!1d-106.659559!2d35.232645!3e0?hl=en

Jeez that's a huge link. Hope it gets truncated! blink.gif

Anyway, I've not taken those smaller highways through Dolores and from Mancos down into Farmington. They most certainly will be smaller, slower roads, but they may be more fun. Dunno, I haven't driven them to be honest.

PS: Don't take US-550 all the way to I-25 and into Albuquerque unless you're staying in ABQ somewhere! The host hotel is on NM-528 (aka Rio Rancho Blvd) and US-550 takes you right to it. If you cross the Rio Grande river you've past the turn onto NM-528, and you're in Bernalillo heading the wrong direction. And, if you go all the way to I-25 and head south towards ABQ, you're nearly committed to going all the way down into ABQ, which means having to re-cross the river, in traffic, back to Rio Rancho. That little mistake could add an extra hour or more if you're in rush hour traffic!

I am going to post a couple photos, but the story is - I am heading for home. The fed ex promised by 3 pm, so at exactly 3pm the truck arrived. Then I remembered installation is a two person job because the nut and bolt head are in two widely separated places. So tape had to hold the nut in place while I jiggled the bolt into threading. A half hour was all it took to back on the ground. But the battery hardly started the car. I decided to press on, but it died before I could leave the megalomart parking region; the battery was good for maybe six volts.

I bought a new battery and nosed north instead, driving by day. Something is very weird because I can use my fog light and running lights as a voltage regulator. I learned ohms law in grade school, but this isn't adding up in my addled brain.

hissyfit.gif hissyfit.gif damn it all! I really wanted to meet you guys and make connections in the world! I was going to introduce you to a twelve year old (scotch). I was going to vainly try to keep up on the roads. So many plans lost, like tears in the rain. wacko.gif

The lesson learned is it just isn't ready cause it still has unaddressed problems as a rolling restoration. The tr6 would have made it because all the bases were covered before I took it out. Not so for this working sports car, or trying to work at any rate. Gotta call the hotel and cancel.
Warren

Posted by: worn Mar 20 2014, 06:22 PM

Sounds like I cancelled an hour too late, they said they might ding my credit card for a late cancellation fee. I waited till I had internet access so I could look it up. Don't have an iPhone.
I am still optimistic and will keep you posted.

My damn clutch is still screwy. It will work fine in the morning. As I drive through the day it gets progressively worse. Just doesn't want to go into gear. It will grind some too. Yet when it's in gear it does not slip. Engages like it should. I'll adjust it in the morning but this doesn't seem to stick. The linkage is all fine. Shifts perfectly with the motor turned off. So they are adjusted right. IT is my clutch that has me a little stumped. Oh well thats a problem for tomorrow. I've been driving since 4 this morning & I am going to bed

We are leaving the house at 8:30 but we drive slow and stop for coffee a few times. That means we will hit 160/550 in Durango at 8:45 so you won't be far behind us. Text me (817-832-4171) if you have a problem and we can turn around. Odds are you will catch us by Bloomfield! smile.gif

Okay this is the route I am taking now thanks to all the advice.

I expect to hit Durango & the 550 about 9:30. Anyone going to be going through about then?

My damn clutch is still screwy. It will work fine in the morning. As I drive through the day it gets progressively worse. Just doesn't want to go into gear. It will grind some too. Yet when it's in gear it does not slip. Engages like it should. I'll adjust it in the morning but this doesn't seem to stick. The linkage is all fine. Shifts perfectly with the motor turned off. So they are adjusted right. IT is my clutch that has me a little stumped. Oh well thats a problem for tomorrow. I've been driving since 4 this morning & I am going to bed

That's a real bummer, but I guess these adventures are what makes the trips in these cars worth while - kinda like they gotta break down so many times in order for that one single weekend spent driving long distances and eating and drinking copious quantities to feel like a real achievement and justification for owning these things! Did I just say that?? blink.gif I'm reading too much Zen truth books.

Anyway. Sorry you couldn't make it, maybe the next one will getcha.

172 knots true airspeed. Not bad for a machine older than my 914.

Elliot, you have the picture focused on everything BUT airspeed. Looks like you are at 1500 feet heading east banked a bit left? I see the rate of climb, but i am taking your word for the airspeed. Two engines? Looks like new. Total distance?

My Dad wears the same oxygen job, but he is older than we are. I always wondered how you dealt with the high flying. How do you keep warm though. Dammit, i wanted so much to meet you! hissyfit.gif headbang.gif

Kind of a bad iPad pic. I was at 11,500ft, the third altitude pointer was hidden. "True" airspeed is not shown on the indicator. It has to be calculated. Total distance Paso Robles to Albuquerque was 699 miles. The airplane is a single engine Beechcraft Bonanza built in 1958 with a few upgrades. I found the heater works great. Same type of heat exchangers as the 914. Sorry you didn't make it. NEXT TIME.

I landed at Paso Robles this afternoon at 3:20. A reeeaallly bumpy ride. It was another great Rt 66. The barbeque (when it finally happened) was great. Much thanks for the veggie burgers. Lots of beer, wine and other stuff was consumed. We had a great run up into the mountains and my rented Hundai performed flawlessly. biggrin.gif At $6 a gallon for avgas, maybe next year I'll drive the car. laugh.gif Mike Wills organizes a great trip every year and this one was as well and he is just soooo cute doncha think? lol-2.gif
