914World.com _ 914World Garage _ LAST DAY- The coveted triangle window seals! Closes Feb 14th

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 16 2014, 12:54 AM

Yes, I've been working on these for awhile. The fist ones were copies of the best I could find, and not as good as OEM, I made then as cast molds using catalyzed rubber. Sometimes it didn't flow all the way as the pressure required to make these meant that I wound up throwing out about 1/2 of the ones I made. I cheated the formulation to make it flow better and found that didn't work as well.

The only choice was aluminum tooling. It can take the pressure and allow for using a compound that flows and and looks correct.

Well I finally did it. I actually improved the little skinny part on the back edge of the seal so that it actually fills the little void in the indentation on the inside of the door. This is something the OEM current version does, but it's a little loose.

So below is a picture of the OEM and one of my seals. Guess which one is mine.

I'm posting in larger files so you can zoom in on the details.

This is one of the big projects I've been trying to get off my plate for about 18 months.

These are the tip of the iceburg. I'm doing a ton of stuff for Stoddard too!
It's how I have been able to afford to make the tooling for this and more new stuff.

+1 SET..
I will maybe soon have doors worthy of putting these in?

Thanks, Mark...

Posted by: IM101 Jan 16 2014, 11:05 AM

Seriously Awesome! I wish I could be a fraction as good of a vendor as you! I will probably be ordering a bit here in the next couple months to finally, hopefully get my own 914 on the road =)

Mark,

I'm in for one set as well.

Any chance I can combine with some other seals I need? I can get a list together.

If not, no biggie, I still definitely want one set.

thx, Turk

I'll take a pair.

Posted by: Racer Chris Jan 16 2014, 07:49 PM

After a good external fit is acheived, my biggest concern is that the glass will sit deep enough that the top cap isn't deformed, causing a leak point.

Yes Pat,
Your name came up the other day. I still have the files, just need to make tooling.

Posted by: Mikey914 Jan 17 2014, 02:32 AM

Well, after Chris's response I decided to do the install on a car not just a door. With all the parts in it. I did forget how much fun this was last time.

All this working at night I should change my company name to midnight auto supply?????

Actually I did find that the dimensions are spot on. The issue Chris brought up, isn't a problem on mine. The biggest problem is trying to wrangle the seal and bar into place without having it creep up on the bar. Well I found a good way to do it.

It's late and dark and I'm taking pictures with a flashlight in my mouth as the flash on the camera is creating glare and making it look fuzzy, but these are the best pics I can get right now.

I do plan on doing a full write up in a few weeks. These will be ready in about 18 days so sometime before I start shipping. But these do look good installed.

I recently replaced an old tattered one on the 'BB' that had been bugging me for years (passenger side), so I think I'm OK there ... need to check my wife's car next. Will probably order a pair as her car will be getting all new rubber everywhere else during the restoration.

You never cease to amaze us with your new bringings, Mark beerchug.gif

As soon as I have the parts in full production I'll start taking the cash. Should be about a week before I have the material in and a few days before I can process it, so I'd say about 12 days.

I'll do one side only if you want, but it'll be $60. Only during the group buy as once I start putting them in inventory, it becomes a pain to keep track of and if I sell 20 right and o extra lefts, I now have to go back into production early to have sets. It's more of a wildcard for me and makes inventory a pain to manage. That's why most everything I sell is sets.

So until I close the GB yes.

I planned to do a thread on the install for these this weekend but got 12" of snow. Next weekend I'll get one posted. These do require dissassembly of much of the door parts. The aluminum pillar that holds the triangle window has to be moved back at the very least. The seal with the window in it will not fit into the door, and the top cap will not sit correctly unless it's seated all the way down. You can see from my midnight installation that I removed the bar, fitted the seal with the window in it, and attached the cap before reinstalling. The shrink wrap was a very helpfull part of the install.

It is required to move the bar back at the very least, and it was faster to install the way I did. I will get step by step pictures next weekend.
