914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Hand throttle for carbed cars GB $120 maybe less $99?

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 1 2014, 08:29 AM

Here's the deal-
I had been buying these from a member in Germany. He has decided to stop making them. I've decided to tool up to make these as he has opted to discontinue.
I have a carbed car and these are basically a choke / and way of setting your throttle to a base RPM as desired on the fly.
Since these have a value I've decided to pick them up. It's a pretty simple set up, the only real cost is the stamping for the lever section. I have a few ideas that may reduce the cost to the $99 area, but I have to see how they work.

I will have these in about 6 weeks, so who's interested? Cost is also a function of how many people want them. If I can do 30 units I will guarantee $99 price point.
So who's in?

I'm interested. Let's see where the price falls.

Posted by: eyesright Feb 1 2014, 09:28 AM

I want one, maybe two, possible three.

Would heater cable levers work? I bet you could scrounge for many of these. Would the labor of clean-up/refurbish be cheaper than new manufacture...?

One complete and one extra front mount if possible.

Aren't there lots of similar lever assemblies already around used for throttle or choke control on garden tractors & mowers and such ??

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 1 2014, 02:09 PM

The lever is the most expensive part. The rest I can make for about $40, I do make the correct black knobs, so the arm assembly is the biggest cost. If anyone can source them for me I could make these for even less. I had thought about looking at other levers, but had to get a better look at what's out there.
But yes, it would save some cash.

Posted by: JmuRiz Feb 1 2014, 04:33 PM

Question, can they be used with a rennshift?

If so, I'm interested, as I know it'd be awesome to have on my other carb'd car.

Posted by: Harpo Feb 1 2014, 05:55 PM

I also have a aftermarket shifter so I'm interested but concerned about compatibility

Thanks

These work with aftermarket shifters with modification, DEC has a picture.
I have already machined the rod and the the plates. The lever is the last piece. This is one of the projects I just needed to wrap up.

Posted by: Racer Chris Feb 2 2014, 08:29 AM

Mark,
We need to talk.
I've been working since the middle of last year to produce an inexpensive hand throttle kit.
Planned release is this spring.

I need one

Posted by: Kansas 914 Feb 2 2014, 11:54 AM

I need one - if for no other reason too warm the beast up so it will idle - stupid carbs.. smile.gif

So - YES - I am in for one.

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 3 2014, 01:02 AM

Kind of nice to be able to set it up enough to warm up. I haven't done much AX but I bet it's nice to not have to have the motor spool all the way up from idle.

Well that's a problem for the 912, I didn't think that out. That is where the heater control lever goes. Maybe an extension piece to mount it on the tunnel just behind the shifter? Kind of like where the heater control is on a 914?

Since I am running headers and have no heat that would be perfect.

If the final product is as accurate a reproduction as the one from your German guy, I would definitely take at least one.

FWIW, I wouldn't mind a higher price if that's what it took to make it original looking.

Have a few parts still in finishing for the 1st batch, the rest will be about 2 Weeks behind. 1st group is 12-13 units.

Posted by: morgan_harwell Apr 24 2014, 07:39 AM

I'm looking forward to receiving one of these hand throttle sets.

I think about it every morning I fire up my 914 and then place a wood block (a very high precision tool) between the brake and throttle pedals to hold the engine at a high enough RPM to keep it from stalling. The CIS engine always starts instantly (neet, neet, VROOOM!), but will not idle until it warms up a bit. After about 2 minutes, I remove the very finely crafted wood block, put it back into the driver's door pocket (don't want it tumbling about on the floor while driving (ask me how I know)) and procede out of the garage and on my way.

edit 1/26/2015:
I installed one of these hand throttles this past weekend. Install went smoothly.
My 2.4L CIS engine is an early one out of a 1973 911T, which was not equipped with an Auxillary Air Regulator the later CIS injected 911s got. If I remember correctly, 1973 911s also came with hand throttles.
To start the cold CIS engine now: depress throttle pedal slightly, pull back new hand throttle lever, release throttle pedal, turn ignition key and "neet neet VROOOM!", and the cold engine now idles by itself without stalling smile.gif. I have since retired the very finely crafted wood block into the wood stove.

I remembered seeing a picture of what might have been a very early car, maybe a 6, and it had the black lever..... blink.gif I wondered what that was.

For the Fuel Injection Folks, can someone post some pictures?

Is that really what it is for, Cruise Control. Seems a bit dangerous, doesn't it?

EDIT: Post 58 cleared that up a bit. So they could be used on FI cars. I was envisioning the rod going to the carb, but it goes to the gas pedal..... KMA.gif

Posted by: Qarl Apr 24 2014, 07:57 AM

No it's a throttle control for warming the carbs up at startup. Connects to the accelerator linkage and by pulling the black handle just sets a tiny bit of throttle to raise RPMs during warm up.

I would definitely NOT use this during driving. Very unsafe.

Posted by: JmuRiz Apr 24 2014, 08:42 AM

I know, I shouldn't have brought up the joke biggrin.gif
I'd LOVE to have one on my 356...it's rather finicky until it warms up.

I'm excited to buy one for my 914 when they are ready.

It's as safe as you want to make it. Using it as cruise control on a high speed crowded freeway? Unsafe. Using it as cruise control in the middle of the desert on interstate 40? No problem. driving.gif

Just thinking Perhaps this should be sold with a disclaimer. Not intended for automotive use. It's a replica of an old part for ornamental purposes only. DO NOT INSTALL ON YOUR CAR as we will not be liable for your misuse of our product.

In this day with those type of questions being asked. It's best to state it's not intended for installation on your vehicle.

Doesn't the throttle lever assembly attach directly to the body and the plate goes over it. Looks like you'll need a slot cut into the plate for the lever to move ?

Is the mod on the parts I bought or the console? I was thinking that someone mounted it on the side of the console somehow or?

You can easily modify the board on the bottom, it just takes a little time and patience.

Are you thinking cut through the board just ahead of the shift boot and screw the L shaped bracket to the bottom of the board, as that was my first thought by making a metal plate for the lever to slid through and bolt up to.

I need to remove the center consoul and install the hand throttle. Cut a clean ski in the carpet. See where it interacts with the board. Drill 1/4 holes where the slit will start and stop, and probably take a dremmel toot to connect the dots making my slot. I would like to make a finished "trim ring" to make the edges nice. I'm thinking ill modify a section of engine deck lid welting seal to do so.

I like it, so it still is attached as without the console!
