Posted by: mohnliting Jan 5 2005, 09:20 PM

OK - I finally got some pictures of my 1972 1.7 914. I picked this up for $500. I think I got a pretty good deal. As you can see from the driveway, I do have to get the oil leak fixed. IPB Image

Hell, that rear bumper-taillights-trunk lid and p-o-r-s-c-h-e lettering alone is worth 500 clams...

Good for you on the deal--bad for the guy selling it-he obviously does not know its real value!! IPB Image

The trunk looks pretty good. Only a little surface rust under the carpet.

There is a small hole by the driver's door. Any suggestions on a fis. I love to tear apart engines, but I haven't done much body work.IPB Image

I'm new enough to the forum that I don't know what you mean by the "hell hole" and the "longs". Sorry!

The hell hole is the area below the battery tray - passenger side of engine compartment. Prone to rust from battery acid. The longs or longitudinals (sp) are under the black rocker panels below the doors and are part of the main support of the car. Take the rocker panels off and inspect.

the "hell hole" is located underneath the battery tray, where the framerail meets the passenger firewall

the "longs" are behind those black rocker panels

Damn you guys beat me to it.

Henry, any rust can be fixed, don't worry about it. IPB Image Engine looks nice and clean, now to fix that leak (check the valve covers) IPB Image Stick around, you'll learn alot; I certainly have IPB Image

I've actually done a lot of research on the oil leak issue. I have been under the car several times to find the leak. The valve covers and tubes look great. It is coming from up high on the engine. Either oil cooler seals or pressure sensor from what I can tell. I replaced the oil cooler seals and it didn't seam to help. However, I probably over tightened the bolts on the cooler and may have distorted the seals, therefore causing the new seals to leak. As soon as the rain lets up I will crawl back under and check this out.

The battery tray area has some surface rust, but nothing bad. While under the car I have looked the frame over pretty good. I can find only minor surface rust here and there, other than what I showed in the two pictures.

The interior isn't bad. The passenger seat needs a little work. The carpet could be replaced in the future but it only has wear and tear aroung the gas peddle. The dash needs the be re-glued in one small area, but no tears. The steering wheel needs to be re-covered at some point, but the cheap cover I have on it will do for now.

The other big issue is all of the seals. They all need to be replaced, but I am going to have to start slow and buy one or two at a time.

I love a good challenge and on top of it all, my wife likes the car.

I paid $400 for mine and had to drag it home, it sat for 9yrs. Worked on it 3days to get running and the 4th tag and ins. You got a great deal there. Oil leak check the valve cover seals and the push rod tube seals. Even it is air cooled there is a thermostat moves a cable and goes around a pully at the bottom of the motor. If it is not there and the pully is gone the bolt hole for that pully goes into the crankcase and needs to be capped with bolt and flat washer. Mine is an ugly great running 72/1.7L as well in Sarasota Fla.

What colour is that? Looks like Aubergine (sp?).
