The Dakar Rally is already at day 7 and I have not been able to find any TV coverage!
Is there a Cayenne entered?
Well, at least we can watch NASCAR drivers B.S.'ing ....
Eddie
Speedtv doe's not list any Dakar Rally in ther schedule for the next five weeks.
CCLINDAKAR
SPEED apparently lost the bidding war for the rights to Dakar this year, to the Outdoor Life Network! OLN seems to feel they did such a good job with the Tour De France that they could do just as good a job with Dakar. Coverage will START about the time the rally is over, on 22 Jan.
I'll be watching. I love seeing those huge GAZ and MAN trucks jumping sand dunes right next to some poor sod on a bike...
I'm not sure if you can receive it via satelite, but http://www.eurosport.com/ shows every day live - moderation in english

They showed about 30 secons to a minute of highlights at the end of some show on Fox Sports World tonight. No commentary or information, just video of some SUV type vehicles gonig throguh the sand. One shot showed a Toyota truck blasting along, then the next shot was the truck on its side with the drivers side door several feet away from it, the occupants standing aronud outside looking displeased. That about sums it up.

Just out of curiousity........Do any of the WRC teams take part in the Dakar Rally? They would seem to be suited to that type of race. |
Thanks Wolfgang, Dakar is definitely a 'Murphy's Law' challenge. But I can't resist watching those Rally races......I don't know who's got more balls, the driver, or the navigator!
btw - there's an Austrian guy, he was motocycle-cross world champion twice when he decided to start at these long distance rallyes, on the motocycle
He won the Pharao-Rallye, even the Paris-Pejing Rallye but never saw the finish line at Dakar. If I remember right, he started Paris-Dakar about 10 times and broke more than 30 bones trying to finish it once ... no luck.
It's Heinz Kinigadner, the current racing director from the Austrian KTM-Team (motocycles).
At the current ranking they are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th
WOW! Kind of like the motorsports version of the Iditarod!
I used to race a Husky WR400 (local Hare Scrambles...yeeeaaars ago), ever heard of an Elefant?

Okay...maybe I shouldn't have used Iditarod, and "riding a Husky" in the same thread
The "Iditarod" is a extremely long and treacherous dog sled race in Alaska (don't off hand know the exact details........kind of like the Dakar, but with dogs, sleds, and snow........very long, few finish).
"Husky", as in WR400 Husky, is US slang for Husquavarna WR400 (One wicked dirtbike [motorcycle]).
A "Hare Scramble" is a type of motorcycle race in which you try to get from one location to another cross-country (no roads) first, without killing/maiming yourself in the process (lots of fun, but very brutal!)
And an "Elefant" was a type of Enduro motorcycle (used in the Dakar rally) back in the early 90's.........almost bought one, but got a deal on my Husky (not the dog kind).
thanks, that makes everythin clear
wasn't there a hollywood movie about that kind of dog sled race through Alaska a couple of years ago?

We should enter one of these:
I just cancelled my cable, and havent' gotten satellite yet - I was wondering about when the rally was going to be televised so I could finally pick it up, I really enjoy watching it.
Elefant = Cagiva motorcycle - BIG bike
Hey Gustl B, Austrian KTMs are great machines, so great are the big twins in the desert that I think I heard that all 2 wheeled entries in the Dakar this year are limited to single-cylinder models only!
Yamaha has even developed a hydraulic front-wheel drive system for their YZF's in the race (saw it last year), it helps in the deep sand and keeps the front end from washing out - it's way cool.
A professor in college kept his Husky in his office, for whatever strange reason... I remember seeing it in there a few times (insert creepy music)
Off- road motorcycling is my first passion, but I haven't thrown too much money at it lately because of my 914........
To be quite frankly, I don't know much about motorcycles
I just know Heinz Kinigadner (the KTM racing director), he lives about half an hour from my place.
