Ok, all you Can Am/Limited Edition 914 enthusiasts.... this is the gathering you have been waiting for 
In celebration of the 40th anniversary of these special cars 
Okteenerfest will double as a reunion for all Limited Edition 914s. I know there are a LOT of these 914s in the Southeast (and beyond) so dust 'em off and tune 'em up to make the journey to Townsend, TN this September 25-27. Let's make this the largest gathering of Limited Edition 914s in the world 
Don't have a 914 LE? No worries. ALL 914s are welcome to join in 
the awesome mountain roads of east Tennessee and western North Carolina. Since the government shutdown affected nearly 3/4s of our original route in 2013, we will be using that same route for this year. Dubbed "der Nebelbergring", the route circles the Smokies and includes not only the world-famous 318 curves of the Dragon, but also Foothills Parkway, a portion of Moonshiner 28, Little River Road, and a run through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 
In addition to the , Okteenerfest will feature plenty of good eating, an awards ceremony, tons of give-aways from the most awesome vendors, a Peoples Choice Car Show, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet gathered in a single place 
Okteenerfest will be hosted this year by the Talley Ho Inn located in Townsend, TN just a mile or so south of last year's venue (no longer in business 
)

We have 40 rooms blocked on a first come, first serve basis. Ask for “Porsche 914 Group”. Once these rooms are all taken, they will direct people to other local places that they work with. We have basically the entire place except for a few rooms already booked…They will release the block of rooms on August 25.
Standard Room: have microwave, frig, coffee maker
$68 for Thursday night (Sept 25)
$109 for Friday and Saturday nights (Sept 26 – 27)
(Plus tax)
“Original 8” rooms: VERY basic, smaller rooms, no frig or microwave.
$56 for Thursday night
$93 for Friday and Saturday nights
(Plus Tax)
They also have some that are jacuzzi rooms for $83/$124 prices.

Registration for the event is not yet open since we do not know what our costs will be for food, t-shirts, awards, etc that will be part of the package. Once that fee is calculated, we will post in all the usual online places.
If you know you will be attending, do not hesitate to go ahead and book your room(s) as soon as possible. You can then register at a later time.

Bill , are you going again this year, i didnt make it due to the brake issue i was having-it was a good thing i didnt go 
, but it looks like i will be back on the road this month, , so i guess if nothing else comes up, i should be good to go- i am signing up for sure!!!! maybe dave can get that suby on the road by then? what say you Scotty? would be cool to get a few more S.C. guys out there!

As Steve said, really the only part of the weekend that will be the same as last year is driving the Dragon...and who doesn't want to do THAT again?? 
We really wanted to set a date early and at least get the hotel confirmed so that everyone can plan way ahead. We moved it back a few weeks to September to take advantage of lower room rates, and tried to avoid conflicting with anything other events we knew of. I'm sure we missed something, but we tried....
Looking forward to seeing everyone from last year, and LOTS of new faces!!

-jake, i met a guy down here last week at Bob Woodman's shop, during the costal PCA club cook out and tech session that you did some work for - i think IMS and other goodies, etc, anyway who cares if its a 914 group primarily, lets see some other stuff too!

Actually, Oktoberfest in Germany is mid Sept to the first weekend in October, so we are right on schedule with Okteenerfest!

We had a great time last year. The organizers did an amazing job considering it was the first year and I am sure they will make this year's event even better!

YES!!! I found out about Okteenerfest a week after it ended! I've owned 3 914s in the last 12 years but never driven one out of town in fear of breaking down or not starting for one reason or another at any given moment. I've never been able to go to a 914 meet and have always wanted to. And with remaining Creamsicle drivers in the mid double digits, I think Valentine and I may need an Okteener weekend holiday getaway!

You coming up I-95 to I-26? You can meet up with Phil W just over the SC-GA line and I'll join in around Columbia. There's safety in a convoy!
That sounds like a great idea! I can take two routes: I-95 N to I-26 W (your way) or I-75 N. There's only a 10 mile/10 minute difference between the two. So yeah, whichever route we can caravan would be great! I've had 3 914s and never once driven one out of town (not counting St. Augustine which is just 26 minutes away) for fear of anything going wrong at any minute and getting stranded. I've been stranded enough in town with 914s, let alone out of town. I just hope it will make it without problems. It's still not 100%. Sometimes the power hiccups, occasionally it screeches when I try to start it and once in a great while, it won't turn over after it gets hot. So keeping my fingers crossed I can make it there and back. I wish I had something I could trailer it with. Maybe I should take out long distance towing insurance like AAA before I go just in case. But yeah, that would be great to caravan up there for sure!

Everyone's risk tolerance is different; but, it's really not that risky.
First, anyone with a classic car should have AAA 100+ mile towing.
I don't know what's south of Savannah; however, once you get into SC I know several shops between here and TN that can work on a 914. Phil has a 2.0L with FI so between the two of you carrying spare parts most likely someone will have a part if needed.
Don't forget that once you're at the venue there will be 914 experts everywhere.
So, take a chance and make the trip. Last year's trip was the farthest I had ever driven a 914. The car ran great and I actually became more comfortable with the car than I had ever been before! These cars are meant to be driven. In the case of my car, the more I drove it the better it ran...seriously!
And, btw, you may want to make sure you have a working radio. I love the sound of my 6; however, I can tell you that after a few hours of driving I was pretty much over it for that day!

I also need to figure out what kind of fire extinguisher to get for my car just in case. I also want to add a second oil cooler as well since I'll be driving at high rpms for a long time. Need to figure out which kind/size to get. I'm also going to check the brakes close to then and go ahead and get new tires for it soon so by then they will be nice and sticky in case those twisty roads are wet.
Oh yeah, and my radio works and is OG. But of course, I can barely hear it at 80 mph.

The only time I saw higher oil temps was on the long uphill grades in the mountains of NC/TN. Even they, they weren't that high.
I'm running the factory engine mounted engine cooler on my 6 (similar to what your 2.0 has) so I doubt you'll have an issue.

last long trip i took it was 95 degrees and i drove to Port Orange FLA- ran great!, looking forward to this trip, its been a couple years since i took it on a good drive. - i will travel with some extra parts for sure! i have an extra distributor with new points, extra MPS etc. for 2.0 tools etc. never had to use the extras but most of that stuff is brand new anyway. Would be great to get a few of us together for the way up!

Phil...if yours didn't overheat then you both should be good. I forgot that I do have about 9 or 10 quarts of oil which aids in the cooling process

As Bill noted, these cars want to be driven...the more, the better. Seriously. We drive ours everywhere and never even think of having problems. Only time it gets trailered is if we have an autocross to go to so we can bring the sticky tires.
Really looking forward to seeing all these LE cars!!

Meantime I keep seeing all these LEs' with exact birthdates listed here, so I went to check out my paperwork. Nothing on the window sticker, original write up, final write up/BOS & then I look @ my COA & suddenly remember why I hate the damned worthless COAs- dated 03/01/74. Too bad the still there, original door sticker says 02/74.

Well, your COA says it is but I'm sure you know how I feel about that.
Color code is right, most were made w/ black interiors, engine # was recorded but the tranny was not (common), should have a center console w/ 3 gauges, all gauges should be black centers (not shiny ones), front & rear factory sway bars, 2 horns, black surrounds on headlights, grey surrounds on headlight motors (inside front trunk), need to check the VIN to see if it falls w/in Bowlsbys' LE VIN range, tits (bumperettes) on front & back bumpers. Hope that helps.

According to the Can Am register... VIN 16764 is the last 914 Porsche Can Am Limited Edition VIN authenticated in PCNA records.
So, that being said, looks like the one you refer to is one of the last few LE cars produced.

Decode the Karmann tag. It will give you the XX week and day of that week.
EDIT: I just checked the VIN database and your CS has a VIN 15 less than my CS. So, that means yours was possibly the 51st 914 built on Thursday, Feb. 21, 1974.
Decode the Karmann badge just to be sure.

Nice! Welcome to "Le Club"!
When I first decoded my chassis number I thought my car was made on the exact day I was born on 17 February. But once I realized the days of the week in the decoding began on a different day, it came out to 14 February. So I named it "Valentine". It also helps that the colors are red and white.

Nadine and I (and possible Steve) will be doing a scout out for Okteenerfest on the weekend of May 10. We are staying in on of the economy 'Original 8' rooms at the Tally Ho Inn, so we can report back as to what the accommodations are like. Maybe even post some video...
We hope to tie down all the costs in the coming weeks so we can get registration open fairly soon.
And remember:
YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE AN LE/CAN-AM 914 TO ATTEND!!!

While hovering over and closely observing 6" from our actual, original Constitution of the United States, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights with my brother at the National Archives in Washington DC, my phone rings. It's my little cousin John in Grosse Point (Detroit).
Me: "Hey buddy! How are you? My brother just told me last night you got engaged! Congratulations!"
John: "Yeah! Thanks man! That's actually why I was calling you! I would be so honored if you came to the wedding! I really want you to be there!"
Me: "Of course! I'll definitely be there for you! Any idea when it will be?"
John: "Yeah, actually we have a date set - September 26."

My bother: "Shut up. You don't have something on September 26. That's like 5 months from now."
Me: "Actually, I do. It's that big 914 event I invited you to come to in the Smokey Mountains. It's the 40th anniversary of my car the LE Can Am. They're extremely rare to begin with and there's only a handful left in the world and they're trying to get as many possible left in the country to come."

Me: "Don't worry, John. I wouldn't miss it. I'll definitely be there and really looking forward to it, buddy."
So... unless someone has come up with a way to teleport me and my car, I guess there will be one less Creamer at Okteenerfest. I've been looking forward to this since last year, especially with the 40th anniversary. I'm really dying to go, but family first. I hate that I'm going to miss this and seeing you guys and other Can Ams together. Sad to say, it looks like me and 'Valentine' won't be able to make it (again). I wish Okteenerfest was in Oktober.

or...
come up to the Smoky Mountains, party, drive one of the most famous roads in the world, hang out with like-minded nut cases, party, mingle with celebrities, see some one-of-a-kind 914's, compete for highly coveted Okteenerfest prizes, not have to explain to everyone what type of car Valentine is, etc. etc. etc...

Because this is an important event, and I feel it is important to Valentine, I am willing to travel to FL and bring the car to the show. I am helping organize the event so you can trust me to return it! Like in 20 years maybe. What a great car.

**********UPDATE**************
This past weekend, Nadine and I scouted out the route and met Steve up at the hotel. A few notes:
- The route should be a lot of fun!! A little less quantity of driving than last year, but better quality than even what we planned for (until the govn't screwed us) and much easier to follow - nobody should get lost!!!
****YES WE WILL BE DRIVING TAIL OF THE DRAGON AGAIN*****
And the Foothills Parkway, and through Great Smoky Mountain National Park - which we didn't last year....
- Lunch will be in Bryson City, NC. There are a lot of options for lunch, but none are big enough to accommodate all of us, so we're really going to have to emphasize that people split up and explore this nice little town and find a lunch spot. It's only a few blocks long total, so no big deal. Parking is a bit of an issue too - there are lots all over, but none big enough for all of us... A very detailed map of the town will be provided with lunch spots and parking area, so don't worry...
- The Tally Ho Inn is nice!! We stayed in one of the "original 8" rooms (see the first post on this thread) and it was really nice. Small yes, but all new furniture, very clean, nice bed, hardwood floors, etc. Would certainly stay in one again!
- The hotel has HUGE fields for us to park and display our cars. Almost too big (seriously). Ample parking for tow vehicles and trailers for those that plan to trailer their car, Everything is all together and close by so very easy to get around the property.
- Currently, the plan is for a casual BBQ in the field on Friday night after the drive, then use the adjoining Carriage House Restaurant for the Saturday night dinner/awards. they have a private room for us, unless we are too many then they'll close the whole restaurant for just us!! Dinner will be a really good Country style all-you-can-eat buffet. More details as we get closer.
At the moment, over half of the hotel is booked with 914 event people!! So...make your reservations quick if you don't want to be left out or staying down the road.
We hope to have Registration open soon, so be ready.

Done, reservation made! I enjoyed making this trip in 2010 with Mistress, my 1973 teener, and this bunch of gearheads. She is an almost all original with 54K miles, but is now at the paint shop for a repaint in beautiful Delphi Green. I just couldn't stand watching any more of the old clearcoat peel off, so at least the same color will be "almost original."

Looks like Betty and I will be going to this event. I tried to do the registration thing, but I can't. We want to bring two cars, but the registration form won't let us.

As Steve said, think of it as you're registering the car...with it's caretaker...

I have officially decided that Betty and I are insane. We are going to take TWO 40 year old sports cars and drive the 894 miles, 13 hours, 40 minutes non stop to get to this event. Then we are going to go drive around for 3 days. Then we get to go 894 miles, 13 hours, 40 minutes non stop to get home.
Abbreviated.. we are going to drive 900 miles to go driving for 3 days just so we can drive 900 miles to get back home.
Good thing I have a hand throttle and a Valentine 1.

Two fold
1) we'd have to charge everyone who used paypal more to cover the fees, which would in turn really mess up my way of keeping track...
2) I don't have a paypal that I could use - mine is tied to my company and I would have to pay tax on the "income"...meaning I would have to charge you all another 25% to cover my taxes.
If you really want to use paypal, Steve said he has one to use, but it will have to be $80 per person then, and makes it more complicated to keep track of because he would have to then write me a check for the amounts which wouldn't equal what in registration...

Screamsicle: A 914 high power conversion (V8, Big Six, etc.) painted in the White with Orange color scheme of the 74 LE Creamsicle.
There was a Screamsicle at Hershey. It was flared, heavily modified, and had an LS1 Chevy V8 in it.

Heck, I'm toying with the idea of taking a roll of blue painters tape and turning my orange car into an 'extremely rare' blue and orange Gulf themed LE just so I can fit in with all the others. If there's any scoffing to be done they'll be directing it my way.

Why no Autocross this year?
If you can't coordinate one with the local region, how about a blind autocross?
Simple course. Start finish gate and a 3 or 4 cone slalom. Slalom down the course, turn around and come back.
Here's the twist. You have to do it while blindfolded. You get a passenger who tells you when and where to turn.
Sound easy, doesn't it?
We did this for a few years at the MUSR events. Once everyone got started, they loved it. And it only takes a small parking lot, 5 cones, and a stopwatch (the times are not close enough for anything but a stopwatch). Plus some "Peril Sensitive Sunglasses" to use as a blindfold.
First time we did this, we were all laughing so hard it hurt.

A Blind Autocross is a lot of fun but we simply don't have the time in the schedule.
As far as no regular autocross, very few took advantage of the autocross we had arranged with the local PCA Region last fall so we scrapped the idea this year.

Yes, it's been way too long since we've had both cars together. Hopefully in the next couple weeks, Huey will be back together and we can at least get the girls and go for a ride somewhere.

At one point we were getting Pappa smuf's engine in and running. We found it had an oil leak in a weird spot in the middle of a cylinder. Turned out there was a crack in one of the cylinders. Found it at 7pm and had the engine back out, torn down new cylinder in place and running for a race the next day! I'm still trying to figure why we were putting the engine in the night before a race anyway. Lol

Well I don't think I will be removing the transmission to get ready, but I have a list. Which recently got longer after breaking the windshield. 
Now I have to refinish the chrome strips. Going to use the 914 Rubber trim replacement seal while I am redoing the chrome.
Going to replace the CV joints.
Get new tires.
Mount fire extinguisher.
Replace triangle window door seals.
Install the new German sail vinyl I got from 914 Rubber.
Adjust valves.
Get and install new speedo cable.
Clean the engine and trans.
And a few things I forgot......

Got the seat cushions done for Betty's car, so she sits higher in the car. The foam was collapsed, and the driver's side had torn.
Working on the AC evaporator replacement for the fresh air blower on my car. First thing has been to relocate the wiper motor. Had to move it to the driver's side, and still leave room for the defrost duct and the air flap boxes.
I have the evaporator figured out, and it is going to fit very tightly.
You know, I should probably start a thread on this, but I am really making it up as I go along.

The paint on her car is 14 years old, but it is suffering from the clear coat issue. Plus it has some rust spots that need fixing. I have definitely seen worse on a 914.
But she probably has the highest mileage locked up. 370,000 and still counting every day to work, plus AX weekends.

Sadly (and most regrettably) Valentine (my LE Can Am Creamsicle) and I will not be able to attend due to my cousin's wedding being that Friday and rehearsal dinner that Thursday in Grosse Point, Detroit. I had been planning on this for a year and would really love to have my LE there for the reunion. Same damn weekend. She could've been a contender.
Anyway, I'm posting this because I just cancelled my reservation at the Talley Ho Inn. It took me 4 months to finally give in and cancel my reservation. I had one of the "Original 8" rooms booked from Thursday to Sunday. So if anybody needs a room still, there is now one open for the entire event.
Have a great time everybody. I still would like a t-shirt and goodie bag if possible.

Well new windshield goes in tomorrow after 3 weeks. Replaced the triangle window seals! Mark from 914 Rubber had a list of suggested parts in his install instructions (window fuzzes and such) to replace while you were taking things apart. Mine looked good from the outside so I did not order them.
Well anything that looked good promptly fell apart when removed. So now I have all new window and door seals for Okteenerfest. Next sail vinyl. Then new wider tires to help tackle the Dragon!

Yes your list was much bigger. While I don't mind a few bugs in my teeth that you get from driving without a windshield, those rocks and rain drops hurt!
Part of my delay was not listening to a Mark and ordering all the parts recommended. Of course ordering and getting the windshield took forever!

Sometimes there are conditions out of your control...like a wet and oily bridge in the middle of a race!! 5 others went off there to, and that's AFTER they had a flagger warning them...we didn't have the warning since we were first..

Not all of them are listed yet on the web site but if you register for this event you will likely receive some great prizes and gifts that far exceed the cost of the event. We have a number if $100 gift certificates as well as a $500 gift certificate from LN Engineering. Some of the prizes like the PMB calipers and Custom gauge lights are valued at $400.

I’ve only ever driven The Dragon before (stuck behind a mini-van for most of it) I was wondering if there are any sections of mainly scenic driving ? Stretches of scenery in between sections of technical driving sure are fun.

Jeff Bowlsby really wanted to attend this event but can't make it. While I would love to meet Jeff and pick his brain but because he cant make it he is sending a few goodies along for prizes.

the only real 'technical' part of the drive is the Dragon and parts of Moonshiner 28. Foothills Parkway is really pretty, as is Moonshiner 28 which runs along the river/lake for a ways. GSMNP is VERY scenic.
The route instructions are VERY detailed because we emphasize that people that want to stop along the way to take pictures or just explore should not feel pressured to keep up with any group. We DO NOT subscribe to the notion that we should stop at every light, every stop sign, every turn...so we needed to make the instructions very foolproof.
We have a few planned stops along the way to regroup, gather, take a restroom break, etc. Basically, the route is:
- Leave the hotel, run the Foothills Parkway to US 129, stop and regroup before the Dragon
- Leave regroup point, over the Dragon, stop at Deals Gap and Dragon store for purchase of momentoes
- Leave Deals Gap and a short run to go to the top of the Fontana Dam for some great views, photo ops, and much cleaner/bigger bathrooms!!
- Leave Fontana Dam and run to Bryson City for Lunch (no particular place for lunch, we will provide a detailed map of the entire town - only a few blocks long - with lunch options)
- gather after lunch, drive through Chrerokee then up through Great Smoky Mtn National Park.
- There are rest areas at the entrance and exit of GSMNP, our route plan is to stop at the exit one (about 45 min from Lunch)
- and from there, we head back to the hotel on Little River Road - again very scenic.
Along the way, there are tons of great stopping places, plus 'fun' shopping in Cherokee, so we really encourage people to stop and enjoy the place. There's plenty of time....
Unfortunately, there's usually more slower traffic through GSMNP, so there's plenty of 'Look at the Scenery' time...

For those of you that know about Tim's custom light gauges, he has just finished the set that will be a prize for Okteenerfest. If i an not mistaken it looks like he did a complete restore on these and they are amazing!
I know Tim has improved the wiring set up and produces some quality product. Beside these things being completely restored, they also have the programmable lights that have shift point indicators and redline indicator. These were a highly sought after prize last year. At heck of a value at the price of the attendance fee!

Yes, the gauges all went through my restoration process. The gauge cans and bezels were vaporblasted then repainted, along with the gauge needles. The 3 plastic lenses were removed and replaced with new glass lenses. The speedo was also repaired and re-lubed.
A super special thanks to Mike Blizzard ( ), because of him, all new generation gauges comes with a custom built wiring harness which is connectorized, to help ease the installation process
As a service, I typically charge around 300 to retrofit gauges with LED's which comes with my very custom programmable controller that can change colors at different RPM thresholds, and a warning indicator when you're low on fuel. To do a full restoration on gauges, I charge an extra 100-200 dollars depending on the existing condition of your gauges. All and all, this is over a 500 dollar value, not including the price of the gauges themselves! No core is needed from the winner.
From the sounds of it, this will be the 914 event to be at this year!

Hi all
I wanted to address the questin regarding paypal vs. sending a check that we get every so often. I did this long ago, but it's buried in some post way back 11 pages or so ago, so I thought I would repost.
There are a few reasons we chose not to take paypal:
1) paypal fees. I've put together a very tight budget on this event and we're trying to keep costs as low as possible. Even the paypal 3% charge is a lot (figure at 50 people x $75 x 3% is $112.50 lost to fees). I didn't want to have a 'paypal cost' and a 'mail a check cost'...too complicated and too hard to keep track of.
2) since I am paying most of the bills, the money needs to come to me. I do have a paypal account, but it's attached to my business NaroEscape Motorsports. At this point, I don't really want all the $$ flowing through it because of tax implications.
3) Not as important as 1 and 2, but..... there is a HUGE amount of behind the scenes work that goes on putting this together by me, Steve and Mike. So while sending a check might be inconvenient for some of you individually, it would be much more of a pain for me to keep track of different types of payments when dealing with a lot of people - some sending checks, some paypal, etc. That's just one more thing I really don't have time for. Remember, we all have day jobs so we fit this in when we can...not complaining at all, just trying to minimize the extra work.
So there you have it....I know sending a check can be a bit of a pain - I don't use them much either though many PCA and SCCA events we do still require a check. It just makes it easier for me to keep track of and allows us to keep pricing down as low as possible.

Clay just got the news that his customized speedometer is done and he will be able to get it in his car in time for Okteenerfest. It’s different… subtle, but different!
I’m not going to ruin it for anybody – you’ll have to see it for yourself. I’m going to try to talk him into putting the audio on his phone so people can hear what prompted him to get it done like that. It is AWESOME!

Since we are now just over 6 weeks away, I thought I would post up a basic schedule for the weekend, maybe entice some of you that are on the fence to register:
First of all...this entire weekend is BYOB. We did this for a couple reasons: to keep costs down, some of you don't drink and shouldn't fund everyone elses habit, and because we have no idea what everyone who DOES drink enjoys...so...easier for you to all bring your own. We will have plenty of water and soda, just BYO alcohol...

snack/munchies provided, a chance to say hi, meet your fellow teeners, check out some cars, etc.

Friday

- Swap meet running concurrent to the Show

The focus is on FUN!!! If you haven't been to this area, we have some of the best roads anywhere to drive. Our little cars were made to enjoy to drive, so it's a perfect fit. We'll be seeing some great sights along the way: Fontana Dam, Foothills Parkway, Cherokee (where there is a casino should anyone want to stop and play a little) and Great Smoky Mtn National Park. Plus, we have lots of social, hanging out 'in the parking lot' and just BS'ing time..

Unlike Okteenerfest, most of these guys - if they've even ever seen a 914, it's been a few decades. The gentleman in front of the car kept asking me about selling it. He took a picture "just in case" I decided to.

Ending my 6-year lurk to say I'm thinking of joining you all (haven't logged on here since 2008--where does the time go?) Just one question-- Last fall I took my Miata out with a local Miata group for a drive around SE Ohio. It was a fun time but the group got a little crazy...blowing stop signs, stopping traffic, that kind of thing. This was right after those motorcyclists in Manhattan were caught on video doing stunts on public streets and then ganging up on the Range Rover driver. People were yelling at us and I got pretty uncomfortable so I eventually backed off and finished the drive solo.
Can anybody give me an honest assessment what this drive will be like? Not trying to start a flame war here--if some folks like to drive like described above, so be it. I just need to know what level of intensity to expect.

As one of the co-founders of this event, I can tell you that we absolutely frown on such shenanigans. Okteenerfest is not a race
That being said, individuals will do what they will
Getting pulled over in a federal area for speeding, reckless driving, etc (Foothills Parkway, Cherokee, Great Smoky Mtns National Park, and Little River Road are all federal lands and a large chunk of the drive) can be very expensive
We promote safe, fun, spirited driving and encourage people to drive at their own pace (though we do have a few scheduled stops). Many of you will never have been to the Smokies before. Go ahead and stop and enjoy the views. We'll see you at the hotel in the evening if not sooner
I, too, have been to events where some participants have driven like maniacs. I did like you... backed off and drove the route at a much slower pace.

I can tell you that the intent of the drive is to finish it safely. Most of the roads we will be on don't lend themselves to over aggressive driving. Last year, I thought it was extremely mellow. Don't get me wrong there are lots of challenging roads. Lots of fun to be had. But I did not see any highly aggressive driving. I am sure others will chime in but I don't think there will be any concers like you mentioned. Also there is usually a pretty good police presence on the Dragon which deters the idiots.

So, lets complete the organizing team comments here:
This is an official PCA 914 Registry event run under the rules and insurance of PCA, so stupid or wreckless behavior is not tolerated. If you're speeding and get caught...you're on your own (and will be summarily chastised and made fun of publicly). We are here to have a fun and safe weekend. No, we are not boring and anal old fogies - we didn't put a 3.2 engine with 964 cams, ported heads and Steve Wong chip in the car to poke along - but we ARE a very safe group. We aim to have fun, but not be reckless.
As Steve said, we encourage people to drive at their own pace, stop, enjoy the scenery, have fun. Heck, stay in 1st gear and follow Clay all trip, no problem!! We get our need for speed fix on the track or in the hill climb events we run. This is a relaxing fun weekend for us.
Rrrockhound...we really look forward to you joining us!!
Oh, and yes, that is a very fair concern and I'm glad you brought it up. FYI, I used to be the Carolinas Region President, then PCA Zone 3 Representative. Technically, it was my job to make sure everyone followed the rules, so i've certainly seen my fair share of stupid behavior....like I said, that will not be tolerated...

Last time we were up there was for MUSR 11, and I had to drive back to the hotel on the Dragon with a broken clutch cable. So I was stuck in 3rd gear. Had a guy in a new Corvette that, for some reason, kept running up behind me on the straight bits, but kept disappearing when the road started to turn. So if you choose to stay in first gear, you will be left behind. Quite quickly I might add.
Oh.. and my rebuilt speedometer came in today. I love what North Hollywood Speedometer did for me. I took one look at it and said Oh Wow!

I'm with you, driving like an idiot on public roads is not to be tolerated!
I am just as competitive as the next driver..... on a track (yeah I autocross, yeah my 'track' is a parking lot, I have a blast doing it!)
I'm coming for the great driving, the beautiful scenery, I get to hang with my own 'kind', the sitting around and talking afterwards (that part is AWEsome!)
I wouldn't miss this for anything - the guys putting it on are real stand-up people.
You would be SO sorry if you missed it!

If you are planning to attend Okteenerfest and want to stay in the host hotel Tally Ho Inn where all the events are run out of, as of this morning there are only 7 rooms rooms left of our block. The block is released on August 25 and I was just told this morning that they have 20 people that are NOT from our group on the waitlist - waiting for the rooms to be released.
Book your room NOW...we want the whole hotel to be 914's!!
If you don't get into the Tally Ho, don't worry, there are plenty of other hotels within 1 mile of the Tally Ho, but from the sounds of them having such a large waitlis, you still need to book now or potentially miss out!!

-Leave hotel at 9 or so (assuming I don't break a clutch cable again!!)
-Lunch in Bryson City at around noonish
-Back to hotel about 3:30 or 4
-Dinner 6 or 6:30
Once I get a chance to look at the timing, I'll have something a bit more accurate...

Another part of the 2013 drive: Moonshiner 28 - and yes, we will be driving this too this year!
This is the part immediately following the previous video of the Dragon. This part is such a beautiful drive along the river.
These videos are the only parts of the drive that we will be repeating from last year, the rest will be all new. We figured most people won't complain about having to drive the Dragon or Moonshiner 28 repeatedly...

Man those GPR guys know how to get you what you need. Brian sent some complete oil change kits. With Brad Penn oil, filter, crush washer, and even a set of valve cover gaskets so you can set your valve clearance. A complete package!

Doesn't work on my six, and we use Valvoline oil. Plus, we always carry spare valve cover gaskets for her car on long trips.

Time is running out! Just take a look at the exceptional items Chris Foley of Tangerine Racing has sent.
First, one of his new Type 4 engine oil pressure relief assemblies. This easy drop in assembly replaces the 40 year old spring that may be robbing your engine of oil pressure. It eliminates the stock crankcase oil cooler bypass circuit directing more oil to the parts that need it and can raise peak operating pressure to 70 psi.
I am installing the one I purchased from him on my car this weekend. I can give you a complete report at Okteenerfest.
Chris also sent one of his new hand throttle kits that work just like the hand throttle on the 914-6. This will work on carbed or FI 4-cylinders. This is a very well made item that will be very handy in cold weather.
Either of these items would be a great addition to your 914.

A good loop if you do the dragon is to follow 129 into robbinsville and hit the cherohala skyway back to telico plains/vonore tn. It is 51 miles and it took over ten years to complete. There are over 15 miles above 5000'. The road markers at night are very cool and terminal velocity is possible but not suggested for those not familiar with the corners that tighten in.
On the NC side, the Joyce Kilmer memorial Forrest is the last stand of virgin poplar trees which are about 25' in circumference. You might see a panther if you are stealth.
Also, horseshoe cove is serene.
Past 914 owner and local. I have a 4cylinder but it uses coolant.

I'm really looking forward to this weekend though. Just have a few small things I'd like to do to the car before its good to go. I guess I should give it a wash too.

unfortunately I'm also bailing.. Car didn't quite make it as far along as I thought. The mythical beats does exist and even made it out of the garage on my last visit!!.
Its too frustrating to see running 914"s one more time.. I vowed to return this year in MY 914.. Maybe the tropical Ramble ??
Im currently living 850 miles away from my car so extra plane tickets need to be pointed at getting the beast running.

This is Knikki, w/ 47,700 original miles on her chasis, about 5000 on the new clutch & cylinders. She's pretty much a garage queen, a rare east coast teener that spent 90% of her life sitting in a garage. Repainted, maintained but never restored.

I always have a basic set of tools. Oil is a must. I like having a spare cables (clutch and accel). I will have a set of late front wheel bearings, fuel injector, fuel filter, alternator belt, spare MPS, fuel hose, clamps, zip ties, fuses, and a few electrical items.
Make sure your spare is in good shape and carry a can of fix a flat.

This is standard stuff I bring to the track - plus a bunch of other things - so I have a tote with all of it together already.
In reality...you shoudl have not problems. Last year we had one guy with a bad bearing, and some bozo that broke his clutch cable first thing Friday morning that delayed the whole thing!

Since my bearings are all new, as are my clutch cable and accelerator cable, i probably wont source a new one to carry with, - no one mentioned dont forget the AAA card!! ( i have road side assitance with haggarty as well) i think i might want to reattach my heater flapper boxes too, i just thought about that- and oil gets changed this weekend .

Well because we are only having random drawings for a few prizes and all of the really cool stuff you have to enter for the drawing it would be hard to assign someone to manage your entries. Also we don't have a way to get your prizes to you. You may be able to have someone who is attending do everything for you and collect anything that you win but that would be up to Bob to decide.
Due to the massive amounts of cool stuff we got from our great sponsors I think you could be pretty sure that unless the Pope was your guy on site, there would be no prizes coming your way!

Just finished regulars sing (that is auto correct version of reglassing) the front air dam and spraying with the closest rattle can match to the side lettering. Autocross tomorrow as a sort of shakedown cruise. Here it could be snowing for the trip back (back if we are lucky). We are getting psyched. Getting old too so it ain't gonna be 700+ miles in one go. Have to think of a touch down point part way. I bought a GPS receiver from aircraft spruce that makes my ipad know where I am. Psyched.

The way we do door prizes is:
- Each big prize (most of what Mike has gotten) will be on display and has a container associated with it.
- Each registrant gets a bunch of tickets (as many door prizes that there are) with your name on them.
- You put as little or as many of your tickets into the containers of the items you're interested in. You can put one in each, a couple here and there, or all in one depending on what you're interested in winning. This way, you don't win something that you have no interest in.
so...to Mike's point, the chances that 1) you have a friend up here you can trust will enough to put your name in for the things you want and 2) that if you DO win you will actually ever find out and recieve your loot is slim to none. Here are a few things to check before you leave so, hopefully, you won't need spares.
1-Check transaxle gear lube level.
2-Check for debris in the engine fan also check the alternator belt.
3-Buy a cheap "pick up tool" the kind that has 4 steel "fingers" and a spring plunger that extends them. Remove all 4 spark plug connectors and maneuver the tool thru the sheet metal in several directions to grasp any nesting material that might be found. You will need to remove the sheet metal to thoroughly clean if you find any. Plug any gaps in the engine compartment that would allow "recycling" the already heated air from below.
4-Have a working oil temp gauge or purchase a dipstick thermometer from Mainely by Design. Maximum sustained oil temp? Every "expert" has a different number. I believe F 250 is too hot.
5-Check CV bolts for tightness. ALWAYS replace the serrated lock washers when removing a CV.
6-Check for rust in the inner trailing arm mounts and open up the drain holes at the bottom of the mount.
7-Pack the outer front wheel bearing, check for ulcerations on the rollers (replace both inner and outer wheel bearings if found), add some additional wheel bearing grease behind the outer to lube the inner bearing.
8-Grab a hand full of wrenches and check tightness of drivetrain mounts, engine to trans fasteners, front and rear suspension fasteners.
9-Check condition of all fuel hoses, carry a fire extinguisher!
10-Check for loose wires, exhaust system including muffler support bracket, shift bushings (see if you can break away a section of the bushing with an ice pick) wipers and wiper blades, brake lights, turn signals (be a Porsche driver, use them!) headlight aim, all other lights including dash and finally, probably should be the first on the list, brakes, condition of pads and rotors, check reservoir, see if they will lock up all 4 on dry pavement.

The other day Betty comes home and says her transmission is making noise when she decelerates, and also her car needs gas. So I get in and drive it to the gas station. LOUD noise on decel in 3rd, 4th and 5th. So I get back to the house and put it on the lift. I drop the back of the trans and pull the gear stack...
After 40 years and almost 400,000 miles, the nut on the input shaft split from metal fatigue. It loosened up once the tension was off the threads, and the input shaft bearing slid out of the trans case. That was causing the gear whine on decel. Found it and the washer rattling around the input shaft.
This happens less than two weeks before a 2,000 mile round trip to North Carolina.
So off to Zim's to get parts. I get out there this morning, and replace the bearing, the lock plate, and the nut. I start to put it back together and the stack won't go in. So I look further, and find the pinion shaft bearing is damaged. So I call my good friend Al Zim, and he gets one from his parts supply for me, and they will bill me later when they are actually open. I get back and pull the gear stack apart and find that the input shaft bearing in the intermediate plate is broken too.
I pull a good used one from my parts stash, and I put everything back together. Now the gear stack will slide in. I reassemble everything else, and spend an hour doing an imitation of the statue of liberty to put gear oil in the transmission.
To top it all off, the throwout bearing in MY 914 is making noise. And that bastard is almost $300.00 now (71 911 pull type clutch). I still have to do that and my nieces' 2004 Saab with a check engine light and the top that won't go down.
I am still looking forward to the trip!

That is what we keep saying. It would suck to have that happen somewhere in Mississippi!
FYI... we are taking I-20 west from DFW, and staying the night on Wed in Livingston, Al. We will be continuing on I-20 until we get to Birmingham, then we will be headed north on 59 to Chattanooga, TN.
If anyone is coming from that area, they are welcome to meet up with us for the drive. Just let me know and I will give you my cell phone number so we can meet.

We did the Hillclimb this weekend - All good until my last run and the steering feels strange. Last time it was like this, the bolts down at the steering rack to the shaft came loose. (long description, no need to explain here). So now I might have to take the gas tank out, take out the rack, figure out whats wrong, hopefull fix, reassemble, realign, etc...and I have NO free time between now and Okteenerfest, not to mention having to print up all the registration packets, finish the trophies, etc...
Nothing ever is easy, right?

Nah, just messin' with you....you said cleaning "again"...we'll be lucky to clean "at all" We just beat on Huey pretty hard, and we had way too many events planned for him this month, just the way the calendar worked: Carolinas autocross, Rennfest rally and autocross, Dragn Hillclimb, another Carolinas autocross , Okteenerfest. All with only one week break in there back a few weeks ago! Heck, the Okteenerfest drive will be a breeze compared to the previous weekends!!
Hilllclimb is rough. high speed, very rough road - bounces you all over. Tough on equipment - 7-8 people put their cars ino the guardrails this weekend.

The "extreme budget makeover" continues on 914 which will actually look like a Creamsicle this year.
My "restored" targa top. Couldn't find Dupli-color bed liner that results in a similar-to-original texture so ended up using Rustoleum bed liner. Coverage is nice. Has a sand texture. I am happy 
Bumpers - lot of rust pitting and other blemishes on them but should look fine from 10 foot away 
10 days...

Ok time for one of those surprises! All of us know how fanatic our friend Chris Foley is about making quality parts for our cars. Tangerine Racing has already provided some really nice items for Okteenerfest. But that was not enough for a guy like Chris. Tangerine Racing has developed a simple and superbly engineered replacement for the the dreaded engine push tubes.
Anyone who has ever pulled a Type 4 head has struggled with the removal and installation of these rather flimsy tubes. Even after installing with great care you can have leaks. I think that is likely to be a thing of the past.
Chris is sending a set for everyone to see and is providing gift certificates for a sizable discount on the purchase of these. Pretty sure that there are a number of people (besides me) that would love to have a set of these.

My oh my can I use those. I have more than 700 miles for home and a lecture in front of 200 nursing students at 7:45 Monday. So we will be off and running before the banquet starts. Important questions that need answers;
1) Are there any provisions at the host hotel for car-washing? If not, are there car washes in town? My car might not be the prettiest right now but a girl does have her pride. 
2) Are there any places close to the HQ hotel to buy adult beverages; beer or liquor? What are the TN laws as far as closing times, days they're open etc. of said adult beverage purveyors? We live in the Bible Belt - they have some strange laws here that are holdovers from the original Blue Laws.
3) Mention was made of sitting around a fire pit or the like one evening - does that mean the makings for S'mores would be welcomed? Cuz I luvs me some S'mores! (if I can remember to pack the stuff that is... let's see, chocolate bars and marshmallows do not in the back trunk, else I'll be driving one big yummy smelling, rolling S'more!)
Clay only has to drop the transmission out of his car this weekend to fix a bearing that's aggravating him with the noise and then we are SET!!!

Betty can't wait to meet you! There is a car wash just down from the hotel that can be used. I asked about washing at the hotel but did not get a good answer. I will be bringing a hose and bucket and I bet we can find a water faucet.
You guys will be coming in from the west and passing through Knoxville on the way to the event. I will PM you my number so if you want or have time we can wash your car at my house so you show up looking fine!. Don't worry Clay, you can wash yours too!
Pretty flexible laws here. Just have to buy liquor and wine in a package store. If you get close to Knoxville call me and I will give you a good place to stock up as some areas are sparse on package stores. Beer is available in all stores.

Anyone from last year remember?I think the nearest liquor is Maryville, about 15 miles away, IIRC. Beer available in grocery store near the hotel.

Tore the dash apart on Monday to fix the gas gauge and volt meter. Good thing to have a working gas gauge for a long trip.
Tonight after work I dropped the trans and changed the throwout bearing. It was making noise that I didn't want to listen to for 900 miles... 
Tomorrow I have to finish hooking everything back up and fix the oil cooler bracket.
Oh.. and fix a tire that had a screw in it
Like my better half, I am really looking forward to this trip.

Huey has had a busy month - Rennfest, Dragon Hill Climb and just got back from the local autocross (I won our class, Nadine 3rd)...now getting ready for Okteenerfest. gotta modify the oil tank breather catch can - seems to either be filling up or spitting oil uncontrolably all over the engine..hmmmm.....
Few other minor things to do - figure out why he's idling so high sometimes, put street wheels/tires back on, and he will be ready! Think I'll leave the Glaspak mufflers on that we put on for the hillclimb..louder but sounds awesome!!
Gotta make trophies, do registration packets, then we'll be set!!
Looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend!

So many thing to do but so little time!
today-
1. New spark plugs
2. Fixed flapper box and tube screw came out and was vibrating on the engine mount bar.
3. Connected c heater flapper boxes.
4. New spark plugs installed
5. New thermostat and wire installed.
6. Oil change-valvoline vr-1 racing oil
7.fine tuning mps, idle etc
4 days left to :
Pack, install j-west driving light/fog light converter, paint wheels,
replace carbon in carbon filter

It is a long way in the wrong direction.
I got the trans hooked back up. Broke a weld on the exhaust, so I had to reweld it. Spent some time adjusting the shift linkage, now it shifts really well. Today I have to tweak the mixture on my car and straighten the steering wheel. I have to look for an oil leak on Betty's car that just developed.

Ok time for one of those surprises! All of us know how fanatic our friend Chris Foley is about making quality parts for our cars. Tangerine Racing has already provided some really nice items for Okteenerfest. But that was not enough for a guy like Chris. Tangerine Racing has developed a simple and superbly engineered replacement for the the dreaded engine push tubes.
Anyone who has ever pulled a Type 4 head has struggled with the removal and installation of these rather flimsy tubes. Even after installing with great care you can have leaks. I think that is likely to be a thing of the past.
Chris is sending a set for everyone to see and is providing gift certificates for a sizable discount on the purchase of these. Pretty sure that there are a number of people (besides me) that would love to have a set of these.
Stay tuned. There may yet be more to come!

i am trying to decide whether or not to bring the WAS top i was thinking about selling it, - i have the brake shields for you Al,(Al M.) in the front trunk!! , might have to pack a bit lighter with regard to extras and for sale parts, unless someone for sure wants it i may not bring the extra top or the early front bra

Dropped my car off to Robert Berry of Eurohaus for a professional once over before Okteenerfest. Oil change, set valves, new plugs, and timing check should be all it needs. Meant to do it last week but life got in the way.
Can't wait to see all of the cool 914s that are showing up!

I got the rear trunk on my car full of tools and spare parts. I even got two jackstands and an aluminum hydraulic jack in the car. (everything is wrapped in towels). Betty's car has the engine tin for the swap meet (also wrapped in towels), plus folding chairs, a folding table, a contribution to the door prizes, and a goodly supply of Texas potables.
Both cars will get duffel bags with our clothes and grooming supplies added to the front trunk in the morning.
So we really ARE packing for a cross country trip. See you on Thursday.

Front trunk packed with clean up stuff, extra oil and break fluid, my duffel bag with clothes. The only thing left is Ali's little suitcase. rear trunk tool bag, car cover, two chairs with a little room. Nothing in towels I will be adding to the trunk patina. Flying to Baltimore today for a day trip and will be ready!!!!!! We are looking forward to meeting every one!!!

the decision has been made-i am going to drive the car, not trailer it- since neither my son due to work&school, or my wife are coming, i am going solo! The roads up will be much more fun that way! So the AAA card and Hagarty roadside assistance will be close at hand i hope not to use them. - will leave tomorrow morning and take the whole day to enjoy the drive up thru rural South Carolina, NC and TN.

well this sucks...
I have to go pick up Huey at our mechanic. It's raining. Huey has not been cleaned since before the Hillclimb two weeks ago, and just last weekend at the autocross the oil tank breather catch can spit oil ALL OVER the engine. So the engine is a total mess....
So...Huey will be on a trailer later today, filthy dirty, filled with dirt, gravel, etc from the past few weekends exploits...and not get cleaned at all...
Did I mention it's raining?

I spent hours this morning thoroughly cleaning and maticulously detailing Valentine. Washed, polished, waxed, cleaned the wheels, dressed the tires, bumper tops and targa top, polished and shined all the vinyl interior, cleaned and Rain-Xed all the glass, vacuumed all the carpeting and cocomats (and she was already clean). She's immaculate and beautiful now, ready to drive and show! Now to pack for the trip tomorrow...

My camera took a dump on me 2 days ago & now only takes "artful" pictures. Artful as in you just took a huge dose of LSD artful.

Got as far as Indy last night and then alternator stopped pumping electrons met Brad on route and it was nice to have an expert push the car to roll start after he tightened the belt. Didn't want to push on into darkness with a low battery though. Stopped next to SAMs club and they let me buy a jump pack. On the road again.

The car show was a blur. After taking pics of the cars coming in (see the live uploade thread), I then took one shot of each car showing the plaquard so I knew which car belonged to whom. By then it was time to set up for the group shot.
I REALLY wanted to see the Renegade conversion with Boxster 6-speed

Just got home. THANK YOU everyone that attended!! What a great group of wonderful people!!! I agree with Steve and Mike, the entire weekend was a blur!! But we had a great time seeing old friends and making new ones!
Thanks to Steve for having the vision to come up with this idea and creating something long overdue here in the Southeast!!!
Planning for 2015 has begun.

...And well deserved! Thanks to everyone that put this event together. It was a blast and well organized. Will sign up earlier next year to make sure we get that big tent again. Probably will need a larger one for sure next year.

Traffic from Townsend to I-40 was absolute hell- half hour drive took over an hour & a half, however I made it fine & Knikki is back where she belongs (her garage) Aside from having my posterior handed to me in the car show, , I had a fantastic time & met some very cool people & their teeners. Thanks to everyone & I look forward to attending again next year.

Thanks for bringing Knikki to the event. It was interesting to find out she and my 914 were built the same day with only ten cars between them. And with the same interior color, nearly twins.

Donna and I just got back. Two thousand miles and four roll starts later. Donna got a certain sense of insecurity re the getting home aspect of the trip but things went pretty well all and all. The event was perfectly planned and I couldn't ask for nicer people. Hey - we didn't win anything yesterday while running for home did we? Perfect event either way.

Donna got a bit tired of the roll starts that seemed to be completely sporadic. Two voltage regulators from hell. One that seemed to like charging towards say eleven. The spare was more gung no boiling batteries at say sixteen volts. Ok, now we haul out the whole parts collection and get it right. Would a bar b que chicken jog the memory cells? Schaan or Heideman. Perhaps something I actually want?
You guys put up a heck of a show. Wish I coulda seen the banquet!

999.5 miles from the parking lot of the Tally Ho Inn to my parking space inside our garage. With the driving on the dragon, we probably put 2500 miles on both Frody and Igor. Somewhere on the Saturday afternoon drive on the dragon, Frody (Betty's car) turned over 6666.6 miles. She was a bit busy to take a picture.
Thanks to all of the people responsible for this. It was a really well done event.
We are looking forward to next year!

I knew the odometer was going to flip over to "66,666.6" (it's actually 366,666.6 but the odometer doesn't have a digit for 'hundreds of thousands') at some point on this trip and the plan was to take a picture of it when it did.
It happened when Clay and I had taken off to run the Tail of the Dragon again on our own Saturday afternoon. Two sets of three sixes - on my second run of the Dragon during the weekend. It just seems very appropriate!
Umm... yeah... you could definitely say I was a little too busy at the time to take that picture!

Clay and I know what it takes to pull one of these off and this one was done with class; with grace; in a spectacular fashion; and everybody seemed to have a great time. I didn't hear one complaint from a single person - and that is equivalent to pulling a hat out of a rabbit!
Well... I have to modify that last statement a bit. The only complaints I heard were from people that didn't win one of the FANTASTIC prizes. Holy cow.... the sponsors were incredible - their products were drooled over and coveted by everybody. I already have a shopping list started and Christmas is coming up!
This 914 event ROCKED!

I would also like to give a high-five to ALL that set up this event and to the vendors that have the same passion that we do. Without them these cars would soon be gone.
I have a crazy idea to suggest:
I thought the name tags were great, lots of info, smart to give us 4, had many conversations because of them. Here is my idea.
Could you add our 914WORLD screen name (or whatever it is called)?
tell me to jump in the lake if you want, but we always have a "Good, Bad and Ugly" meeting after projects at work, you can call this my "Good +1"

Can you give details on the cover (materials, weatherproofing qualities, breathability, etc.)? Is it a custom fit for the 914? Any pictures of it on the car? Am interested.

Something that really impressed us this year was the quality of the cars that attended!! That can be seen by the voting which was VERY close in most categories, with most being decided by only 1 or 2 votes.

Did anyone get any photos of the blue with white accents, 1970 that showed up late Saturday night? Some guy & his girl showed up very late & I think they might have attended the banquet. Rough paint job & a textbook hell hole, but I liked the color combo a lot; blue/white can am look.
Washed 800+ miles of Okteenerfest off of Knikki & now I'm going to jack her up & change my master cylinder & swap out the fuel lines for the stainless ones I got waiting on the shelf. Wish I could get Jim & Mel to come up & detail her for me
