914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Sun visor rebuild group buy need to do 20 sets

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 5 2014, 12:36 PM

There seems to be enough interest to put another one of these together.

You would be looking at a high quality vinyl that would be stitched on the edges. I know the OEM was thermally bonded, but the cost to set up and do that would double the cost at less that 100 sets. So, they're not exactly like OEM, but they will have the mirror sewn in like the OEM.

I will also make new visor clips available if you wish for $50 a set of all 3. These are the ones with the stainless pins. This will be only to those that are in on the visor refurb deal.

Just chime in on the thread here to get yourself on the list. As soon as it looks like we've got the 20 sets, I'll send the details.

The price for vinyl is $104 with your cores. Please send stripped as shown or there is an additional $10 in cost (any it costs you more to ship). This price is + shipping back at cost. Figure about $10 domestic give or take a few bucks.

It really depends on when we hit 20.
Thy all have to be done together, so if guess we could start in 2-3 weeks, and it would be 2 weeks from there.
The big issue is I need 20 sets in hand to start.

Posted by: sbsix Mar 5 2014, 01:53 PM

Mark my guess is that there are hundreds of 914s that need new visors. I don't know where anyone could get a set these days. I've been searching for a set for years to replace mine. At your price, its a no brainer.

Posted by: Scott S Mar 5 2014, 01:54 PM

Wow - those look great!
You wouldnt happen to be able to a set for a 911 would you??

Posted by: andys Mar 5 2014, 01:57 PM

BTW Mark,

Shouldn't the mirror flap be hinged on the other (bottom) side? You'd want the flap hang down and uncover the mirror without the need to otherwise hold it up. To me, your setup looks upside down.

Also, any news on the dash? I have a 75 and the interior is the next stage.

I like MoveQik's idea: no mirror on the passenger side and no pouch on the drivers side. Keep things simple. If it's too much of a PITA to do I understand.

One set plus clips. I reside in the underside of the world where we drive on the left hand side of the road so it is OK if the mirror is on the US driver's side.

Will strip cores this weekend and send them to you.

Is the layout the same? Just curious. If so I'd need to note for the construction.

PS It may be cheaper to buy a set of cores here from someone to ship to me.

If this is a go, what address do we send our cores to?

How do you want payment?

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 7 2014, 04:23 AM

Ok,
I have this set up to keep it organized. This is listed in the group buy section on the website. You can get on, and "order" the item "914 visor rebuild service"

http://www.shop.914rubber.com/914-visor-rebuild-service-GB-914VRB.htm

You do not need to pay on the website. What this does is allows you to generate an invoice that you can mail a copy in with your cores and a personal check. You can pay on the website if you wish, if that's easier for you. I will hold the checks until these are ready to be processed. We will start as soon as we get at least 15 sets in. We anticipate 5-8 sets per week can be processed.

To get the clip at the special price you can enter the code I will be PM'ing those that have signed up. You will need to select the clips so they can be included with the visors when we return these. The clips code will not work without the service selected in the cart, so make sure they are on the same invoice.

Thanks again,
I will be holding this group buy open til production has ceased.
Thanks,
Mark

We do have a clearance issue that would require moving the position of the mirror up to accommodate. We will be producing all visors as shown with the exception of the one that has been specified. As it gets more difficult with more options, and more opportunity to have problems any further requests for the flap on the opposite side will cost the same price as these were when we did the last group buy. $125 per set.

Looks like this can be fixed by switching the orientation of the small threaded clip. Makes sense to produce one frame and use hardware to determine the proper orientation.

Andys,
We are offering a GB on the format we have produced and have templates for. We are doing so at a price $21 less that the last GB. We can move the mirror up slightly to make the flap on the opposite side as requested, it just costs us more to have more options. It has to do with the way we make them. These are not idential to factory, but are a good alternative.

No the naked does not cost less, as we are giving you the buy at the price of the naked ones on the old GB.

On the last GBthe majority of the guys want them with all the options, so we set up to make them in mass at the lower price. We have made all the parts, the question is do you want them attached to yours?

Were just trying to get you a good product at the best possible price for the majority.

I'm short 3 of the screw hold down clips (as pictured above). Mine were so rusted up there not usable. Any suggestions on getting these clips or another way to add a speed nut? confused24.gif

I'll look into this as I have a set here that I just noticed was missing them.

Yes, You will need to check naked, and note you do want the pocket if you do.

I am tryig to round up some cores, but have not seen any come through yet. so I can't say if I will have any until I see them on my doorstep.

Thanks!

Emailed McMaster.Carr. So far nothing like it local. Let u know.

Posted by: bandjoey Mar 18 2014, 12:20 PM

Mikey unless U can locate a source for the screw clips I'm going to be out. The factory screw down tension clip has the backstop to keep the screw from putting a hole in the cover material and will not slip down into the visor if the screw is pulled out....2 Strikes against using a speed nut glued onto the metal.

Any and all suggestions for a source. McMaster Carr did not have anything close.

To buy another set of cores they'd have to be really cheap. I am a CSOB Teener.

If nothing comes out by the end of the GB just issue a paypal refund. Thanks Bill

Waiting for my guy to finish up a few more for me should be Friday. These are coming along more slowly than I'd like, but we are making progress. I'm going to have to check in the shop to get more rolling. I do understand that a few of these did get made out of sequence and I had not stacked them in order, for that I apologize.
I have Cheryl handling these exclusively so she can keep track as many are on the print and call program, and a few came without checks.

I have a guy doing these for me, and I will have another 6 sets this next week. Unfortunately, he did get some out of order, so I don't know where we are until he gets them to me. Less than ideal, but they will get done. He's great at doing the work, but the organization is killing me. At least I have each set tagged so when they are done I will get them back to the correct party. But withe the print and call it's hard to get the time line correct, as a few guys that were the first to order (lower order number), were the last to get them to me.
So, please be patient with me we are getting them done, and hopefully picking up the pace.

Thanks again,
Mark

I need mine done, so put me in for a set (black). What's the lead time?

Thanks,

Andys

It really depends on when we hit 20.
Thy all have to be done together, so if guess we could start in 2-3 weeks, and it would be 2 weeks from there.
The big issue is I need 20 sets in hand to start.

i am in as well, but; i do not have any visors at the moment so not sure how that will work. let me know if you have any ideas.

Mark, Could I get a status update on my visors please?

Sent my visors to you on 6/16/2014.

I've sent a couple emails as well, but received no reply.

Thanks!

According to FedEx, Mark received my cores and check on 7/30. Mark replied to a PM from me that day. No reply to my 8/8 PM or my email yesterday. Mark on Vacation??

Thanks Guys,
Yes I get it. The GB has drawn out longer than I'd like, but I have kept the door open so that means these are not the only things going. I'm not personally sewing these myself, but have to rely on my assistants and guys I have doing the work. They get busy too, and I have to be poking them to make sure they are keeping things moving.

My situation at the airline I've been working for has changed. I took a captain upgrade, this meant that I was in training for 4 months, and I'm now based in Medford on call. This has taken a lot of the flexibility out of my schedule. My assistant Blake has stepped up, and the day to day shipping and anything that processed through the site gets out quickly.

The GB for the visors has not been completely seamless. We double shipped Mike Blizzard (thanks for your honesty) and shorted JStroud (who will be receiving his second set in the next few days). Just switched a label. I do have another 6 sets that will be in by the time I get back tomorrow morning.

Yes, I have been more difficult to reach. My only other option was to fold the business or sell it. I didn't want to do that. Things are getting more back to normal, and I do have a few other projects that will be ready in a few weeks, but it has slowed down my momentum.

The good news is I was have much deeper pockets for tooling. I do have a few items that I've been wanting to do that we can all use, it had just been a matter of cash flow.

To all I appreciate your patience, the opportunity presented at the day job was something I had to do, I only had 2 weeks notice, so putting a transition plan in place was a little crazy, but it is working. I will be changing the contact info to allow you all to contact Blake directly, and I will still be available for help, but I may not have access to your tracking number or order status at any given moment. I can get you the info, but it may take a day or so. I would like to spend more time here but a reply off a thread may take awhile. The contact info will be switched over later today for better service.

By the way, yours is one of the 6, that will ship tomorrow. Cuda11, yours should be in the sets to go out also.

The rest should be wrapped up in the next 2 weeks (except the 2 sets that are inbound).

My visors showed up... worth the wait, very pleased with them!!

(Mark... one super minor issue... posting here for others so that they can easily fix.... The people assembling the re-covered visors are using screws that they manually cut down from longer screws. These wont work, since they don't thread into the rear hole on the clips. So, it's impossible to tighten them onto the visor support posts.

I saved my original screws, and that works perfectly. Minor, I know, but just wanted to let people know to save their original visor screws.

Anyway, they look great, Mark....thanks!!!!!

Still waiting for mine...

Did the price go up $76.00? I noticed that your web site says $180.00 now for vinyl.

Posted by: Mikey914 Aug 24 2014, 11:54 PM

The price was never $76, I had these on the site as a special GB, so from here on out yes I can do them, but they are no longer effectively large enough of a group to be a GB. Hold off unless you really need them, if we get another 20 together I can do a GB again, but I have to stop the trickle somewhere are the economy of scale is not there.

Thanks Mark!!

I meant that they went up in price $76.00 to $180.00 on your web site, compared to the $104.00 group buy.
I will wait for the next group buy. My stock ones are in pretty good shape.

Mark, I have PM'ed you, emailed you, sent you the FedEx tracking info on my cores/check and left a msg on your answering machine. I still have not heard back from you to confirm you received my cores and check and have no evidence that I should expect some nice naked sunvisors. I understand you are busy but I'd really appreciate some communication. thanks, Steve

Yep, I've been waiting for the next time you do a group buy. They look great and would go perfectly with a stitched leather or vinyl dash!!! maybe I'll have to get one of those too.

Posted by: Jett Aug 28 2014, 09:42 AM

I would live two sets when available.

Thanks

Frustrating to say the least! I ordered a set a few months ago, without mirror and pockets, and when the first mailing went out I received TWO sets WITH mirrors and pockets. Contacted Mark and sent the extra set back.

I have ordered several items from Mikey914 and have always been happy.
He makes stuff that no one else has bothered to even try to make.
He is singlehandedly keeping our cars going!

BUT

He has a daytime job.
He does this as a side line.
He ALWAYS offers a group buy AND runs his website with regular inventory as well.

I have a daytime job and have been having a lot of fun selling just a few parts on the forum here this year. But I have no idea how Mark holds it together: taking orders, getting them in the mail, figuring out who has the group price and the regular price, blahblahblah. And tracking people in the various group buy threads here, the group buy area of his regular website and the regular area of his regular website. Daunting to say the least!

I can appreciate the frustration, it's not fair if you pay for something and it doesn't arrive as promised or scheduled. If you PM me I can send you the phone number for Mark. I have the number because I once ordered something, he had a question and he personally called me back.

Paul

Posted by: JStroud Sep 5 2014, 08:47 AM

Thanks Paul, I don't need his phone #, just frustrated, and posted to let him know I still haven't received them.

Edit: received my visors today. And I appreciate you checking with me Mark.

Happy customer! Didn't mind the wait, I was in no rush. It was certainly worth the wait. Great work Mike! Can't wait to see them on the car!
