914World.com _ 914World Garage _ First Build Begins 71 1.7

Posted by: Sfreeman615 Mar 10 2014, 01:13 PM

Hey guys, well here it is. My 71 1.7! I'm anxious to get started. First thing I want to do is sand the body down and start the primer process. First Question, what grit sandpaper should I use to begin with to start to get some surface rust off as well as the old paint? I want to get it down to metal and go from there, inside and out. The car also came with 2 trans and I want to know how I know which one came with the car? Sorry for all of the stupid questions, but I'm a nube! Also gonna post a link to more pictures in a post to follow this. I will also add the VIN number to the database on here...Attached Image

You should take off the passenger side rocker panel and check your jack point first. How's the hellhole?

Posted by: Sfreeman615 Mar 10 2014, 02:17 PM

Here's a link to a couple hell hole pics. Not to bad compared to some I've seen. It is not rusted thru, just some surface rust.

Re: The Transmissions,

If one has the input shaft at the tail (tail shifter) that would be the correct type for your year. Can't say if it is original to your car. If you have one with the shifter input on the side towards the rear (side shifter) you may want to use it as it will probably shift better. It would require a different shift rod after the firewall. You could use the other for parts if they are in good shape.

Looks they are both tail shifters

You have come to the right place - congrats on your purchase. It may be motivating to start a build thread on it. poke.gif

Best of luck on your project!

The battery tray and stand are interesting. biggrin.gif I'd poke all that with a screw driver.

It's odd the the driver's side seems worse than the passenger side.

IPB Image

The car does have some east coast rust going on, definitely want to see what's under the rockers. No use making the outside pretty if it's about to break in half. -It doesn't seems that bad, though.

HEY HEY... another Nashville World member. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. I am in Mount Juliet, I'll be glad to lend a hand. beerchug.gif

I think the previous posts are correct dig deeper before you start making it look pretty. Pull the carpets, seats, firewall pad, threshold covers, rocker covers, put it on stands and poke all over with a screw driver and a wire brush.

Really, let me know if you want assistance. I have gotten great help from this forum, I need to pay it forward.

Took me 2+ years of engine rebuilding and body welding, but I have been driving my 75 pretty much daily since last July. driving-girl.gif

Good luck,

Clark

Very good points here!! Gonna start stripping everything out tomorrow interior wise and do some poking around... Keeping my fingers crossed!

Ok I've stripped the interior completely, of course found more rust, but hey what's new right? Need to get busy on the engine rebuild, sending the body for media blasting and priming in a couple weeks! I'm bound and determined to be driving by July!

I saw a you tube video, that I can't find now, and they did exactly what you plan on doing. He made a comment in the video about paying a little extra to have them root out ALL the seam sealer. You need ALL of that stuff gone. blink.gif

While rust attacks these cars it is WATER that causes the rust. Not just driving in the rain, but when water gets in behind the seam sealer and makes a home. that is at the bottom of the sail, behind the door latch, in the trunk, the floors, etc..... And into the longs. The dirt and mud around the rocker covers, windshield trim, all that holds water. Just look around it is everywhere.

Pay extra to have it removed! You don't want to paint over 40 year old faulty seam sealer..... My 2 cents.

hey post some ugly rusty pictures! sawzall-smiley.gif You need some BEFORE shots for your scrap book.

The worst is at the seam in the floor pan in the passenger side, done on the drivers side, I'm replacing them both! Anxious to see what the media blast will reveal!

Update?

Posted by: Sfreeman615 Mar 21 2014, 05:45 PM

Well,I have been slammed stripping the car down getting ready for media blasting and primer! I'm trying to get done stripping everything off so I can take it early next week. Once it has been media blasted and primed, then it will go have the floor pans welded in and the rust repaired before heading to Knoxville for the new engine build!

I was thinking while I have it in this stage, should I go ahead and replace the struts, calipers and rotors? The car hasn't run in 16 years, so I'm sure it needs them. If so, what struts have you guys had good luck with, there's so much money going into everything else, thinking of just doing the KYB (OEM) replacements.

Also, while I'm doing this, should I do the 5 lug conversion?

Posted by: injunmort Mar 21 2014, 06:05 PM

I have heard kyb's referred to as "kill your backs" they may be the cheapest but I like the bilsteins in my dd. not too harsh a ride. for track and autocross there are others on here that know better than I.

Posted by: Sfreeman615 Mar 21 2014, 06:10 PM

Also, finally looked...My car has only 88,000 original miles, not too bad for a 71.

Posted by: trojanhorsepower Mar 21 2014, 06:15 PM

Keep at it. I can't wait to see the media blasted results. I would love to get mine blasted some day.

Gonna take pics and actually go out there and video him doing it! This should be interesting! The price was REALLY reasonable for the blast then primer.

I have a good set of front Boge I can bing you. So spend the money on some good rears. Pull the calipers and send them to Eric at PMB. No options on the brakes. He is the best. His brakes save my car.

thats an ambitious goal to be done by july! but getting it blasted and primed will certainly help. If I had mine blasted it would have come back in two 5 gallon buckets haha. 5 lug conversion depends on what wheels you want to use. good luck man smile.gif

Trust me, I'm nervous about what it might reveal, but I've poked and prodded a lot so I'm feeling better about it. I really want to do solid black fuch style wheels. If I could find 4 lug wheels that look the way I want, I would just stay with the 4 lugs.

The only thing I think we are missing on the forum is an emoji of a smiley face burning $100 dollar bills, can someone get on that please. Would make for a much quicker daily update to build posts biggrin.gif

I do like the 5 lug Fuchs too. There is so much you can do to these cars to get them to look like you want them too.

I decided to "JUST GET IT RUNNING". Problem with that is I like driving it so much that I stopped doing stuff to it. Everything works, lights, gauges, brakes, parking brake, engine.... tranny is a bit grindy. So now I just drive it. It ain't pretty, but it is fun.

My after market gauges are on a piece of cardboard, wedged under the dash, I have no carpet, no trunk carpet, no radio. Plus side is it gives me time to save up $.

Took an awesome drive to Franklin yesterday. About 20 minutes of good speed. not sure about my interstate speed, the speedo gets stuck at 80. But man it is peppy.

They both look like tail shifters. That would be the style that came with your year car. The PO probably bought a core. I got one for about $125. Tore it apart, practicing for my rebuild. Got a few expensive parts out of it to break even and learned alot.

Some not so good WTF.gif I am glad I opened this tranny up. A new dog tooth is over $150. and there are 5? (IIRC)

Attached Image

I watched Dr Evil's video several times then jumped right in. You should get the video and tear into the spare tranny.

He does all 901 trannies. Tail shifters, side shifters, plus the 914-6 differences and 912 differences. Worth @$25. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=113587&st=0#entry1402767

I bought a few of the required special tools, so if you want to borrow them, I'll be glad to share.

UPDATE: Thanks to a great heat gun I finally got the engine firewall pad off! Also, tried heat, pb blaster and wd40 on the screws at the bottom of the rocker panels , got fed up and went ninja on them and got them off! GREAT NEWS, NO RUST behind the panels!!! Lots of dirt but no rust in the frame or tub!!

Excited about pulling the motor this weekend and getting to media blast next week! That being said, I have decided on the paint color I'm gonna go with. I have chosen a Lamborghini paint color called Verde Faunas with all black trim and wheels. Here's what it looks like:

My only reference was this picture until yesterday I was driving thru St. Louis and passed the Lambo dealership! So I pulled in and took a look in person up close, there's no other color to consider!

Posted by: ablesnead Apr 3 2014, 06:46 PM

Good choice...take some time to incorporate the black to blend the chopped 914 lines into the sloped look of the Lambo using that color...old and new nicely intergrated make a resto mod nice

The plan is to do the rocker panels, bumpers, top and wheels in black with the calipers and other parts powder coated in this Verde green!

Posted by: stugray Apr 3 2014, 06:59 PM

I have been a fan of the green on the 914 forever.

I think I want to go with the porsche viper green if I want a more classic solid color.
IPB Image

If I go with a more metallic, I will use chevy synergy green.:

As for the 'prep for media blast in one weekend'... you are either a boss in the disassembly dept. or you arent planning on stripping the whole car!

I can drop an engine in about an hour, but stripping a tub bare would take me days.
Are you just blasting the exterior and keeping the interior intact?

Posted by: ablesnead Apr 3 2014, 07:32 PM

My initial thought is that is a little to linear...vertical black while harder to intergrate would help there...but I realize that its gotta light your fire not mine

if you want the best quality job and a car that will last for a long time to come. get it on a rotisserie its worth the cost and im sure a member on this site will be happy to take it off your hands when youre finished with it. then get it completely stripped down and flipped over and remove all the seam sealer before you have it sent off for blasting. somebody posted about faulty seam sealer and they are entirely correct the blaster wont remove it and theres bound to be some rust under it after 40 plus years just itching to come out in your nice fresh paint job. after blasting wipe it down with a metal cleaner to remove any oils that will be left from people handling it and give the entire car a coat of "EPOXY PRIMER" to seal the metal do all your repairs over the epoxy.

Great advice, thank you!! Just about have it totally stripped, by then end of the weekend it will be! The company that is doing the media blast is Restoration Media Blasting just outside of Nashville. They have a rotisserie there to do exactly what you suggested to make sure they get EVERYTHING! Once they are done with the blasting they are gonna do the epoxy primer just as you suggested!

check with the paint supplier for the tech sheets on the epoxy primer you use they have an adhesive built into the epoxy to help the filler and sandable primer bond to it but it only gives you a 2-3 day window that you can cover over it. you will want to scuff a panel at a time respray and do body work then cover and move to next panel. i know it sounds like a pain in the ass but the benefits are worth the extra effort. looks like you're really digging into this build hope to see pics of the progress and a finished product soon

LOL!!! I thought Darren's call to me today questioning the sudden change of shipping address was strange!!! When it comes back from blast, we can reassemble into a solid roller and get it ready to take to Robert in Knoxville! I am so pumped right now!!

Posted by: Mblizzard Apr 7 2014, 07:23 PM

I you get time this week think about the other parts you may need to get it rolling.

I will grab you a right upper engine tin, the window parts, tail lights, head light buckets, and a few others.

Need to think about exhaust. You will need a fairly free flowing exhaust but I would try to get one that has heat exchangers. I have a dual Monza muffler for a 2.0. Not the best but it might get you by until you decide on a performance muffler.

Looks like you're doing a great job with your re-build. I came in looking to see if anybody had a recommendation on where to get 1.7L Heads (mine are finally shot), but I see that you are going way beyond what I am able to do.
I've owned my '72 1.7L since 1982 and it is my constant project (very fun project). One thing that I did about 20 years ago with my first engine rebuild was that I hard all the engine sheet metal bead blasted, zinc plated, and powder coated. The zinc plating keeps the rust away. I chose white powder coating and it really lightens up the engine compartment when everything is back in the car. Here are a couple of pictures.

I have a set of 1.7L heads that came off of my car if you want them. If you are looing for something newer, I bought my new heads from DRD Racing Heads: http://drdracingheads.com/

Another major step today, got my transmission back from Dr. Evil! Can't wait to bolt it on! A little more time and few more $, but that's the 914 way I guess!

Posted by: slimeytoad May 31 2014, 07:27 AM

Thanks for the tip on DRD Heads. I'll keep that link for future reference, but I was looking for stock 1.7 heads for 90mm bore cylinders. I've since found some through my local VW shop. It was good to see that DRD advertises that they use AMC castings because that is what I got from my local shop.

Thanks man! I got slammed with work for about a month and wasn't able to do much, but I went the other day and bought a mig welder and a plasma cutter and we are back in business! Hope to have the new floor pans and the patches on a couple other areas welded by the end of the week, then its on to body work! It's going on the rotisserie in the morning, I'll be able to do some fast work once that happens. Eric Gardner at Restoration Media blasting has been awesome. He has basically given me free reign in his shop to work and he's helping a ton! I'm ready for our reassemble day and get this thing on the road, hopefully complete by Okteenerfest!!!

Posted by: Sfreeman615 Jun 26 2014, 09:01 PM

Fabricated the braces to keep everything straight and correct while on the rotisserie! Thinking of making several sets of these if anyone is interested! I wasn't gonna pay what some of the vendors were charging for these. They screw right in the existing door latch holes with the custom brackets we made! Very efficient and strong, also adjustable!

Posted by: zambezi Jun 26 2014, 11:49 PM

Looks good, the only problem I have with braces in that location is you cannot put the door back in periodically to check gaps as you progress.

These are much easier to take off then busting the welds on other braces I have seen every time you wanna check the doors. 2 bolts and these come off! We also fabricated additional brackets and braces that run across the top of the targa top. This car won't move an inch and they are all removable in 5 minutes!

Really enjoying reading your build thread. Great pics, and your enthusiasm is contagious! Keep up the good work and keep up the documentation. This is going to be one outstanding finished product.

Make a jig out of wood or scrap metal to slip in place every once in a while, or just measure NOW and along the way. Make marks on both sides so you know where your measurement should be taken each time.

Spread the welding out to reduce heat concentration and use compressed air to cool the spot.

Posted by: Sfreeman615 Jun 27 2014, 05:50 PM

More work being done today! Finally got to see my teener upside down! LOL. All of the suspension is out. Taking lots of pieces to powder coating next week. Also got some spot welds drilled out!

Yes, the media blast booth is right behind where my car is sitting about 20 feet away. We will completely go over the car once again. Once complete, we are spraying por15 on everything on the bottom side as well as in the trunk, hell hole and under the hood up front.

Hate to admit, but I got under the car and just kicked the rocker panel covers until they broke off, then cut the screws and bolts off! Not the proper way to do it but I was pissed off 2 hours into trying to get them off! I'm going back with fiberglass rocker panel covers, so it didn't matter in the end smile.gif

Usually yes, but I am doing the 5 lug conversion and changing the hubs and all the bearings later this week! Congrats on yours being ready for paint, feels like mine is taking forever, but I should be done by the second week of September!

Before and after painting the suspension! We media blasted all the parts, then painted them with EPX 908 Epoxy. This epoxy is amazing and goes on very smooth with NO dripping or running. A novice can use this stuff and look like an expert painter!

looks great, make sure you clean and use weld thru coating on the edges before you weld panels together or the seams will swell up with rust and after its welded use epoxy on it before seam sealing.
