914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What's your color? And why?

Posted by: mgp4591 Mar 10 2014, 08:12 PM

Some of us may have our "favorite" color, but does it work on a 914? Very few cars look good in ANY color, so if you're a fan of yours (which you should be) tell us why. To keep it an original color is a great reason also, even if it isn't the most popular or even "fits" the design. Maybe we can all learn something about ourselves today... idea.gif

Porches should be light silver. Period.

L50E Adriatic Blue.
I decided after doing some samples that I liked the stock color very much.
my other options were a very bright almost neon green and Plumb Crazy. The wife didn't like the plumb crazy (i was surprised) and really liked the blue. It helped that it was the stock color.

One advantage we have is that the cars are small- if you have a BIG car and a loud paint scheme it can look obnoxious. I've been looking at Laguna Seca Blue and saw it on an M3. It's very nice and with the right accent pieces can look damn sexy!

Nice! I looked at the S4 Audi blue for quite some time. very pretty. but, since my car is mostly glass, I didn't want to spend a lifetime sorting out every wrinkle.

That's kinda what I'm saying- your blue looks great! On a Ford Econoline, probably not so much...

When I was looking for my current car I wanted silver. But, as often happens, the color finds us and I ended up with Marathon Blue, which is an icy blue. I dislike the black bumpers used in 73-74 so I went with body color bumpers when the car was painted. I think it improves the visual proportions and makes the car look a little longer and sleeker.

Canary Yellow. 70's cars look good with wild colors. Mine is the brightest shade of yellow PPG had that didn't look neon to me.

The obligatory 4 sports car colors of course. But these little cars really excel with all the skittles colors. Must be because its a child of the 70's. Taste the rainbow!

Posted by: falcor75 Mar 11 2014, 05:52 AM

I'm trying to decide on the new colour for my 914, learning towards silver or grey....or Cobolt blue....
Anyone got a comparison between the original silver and diamond silver, the diamond seems more grey which I like.... I think...doh!

Posted by: boxsterfan Mar 11 2014, 08:44 AM

Aubergine or blues (Alaska Blue, Adriatic Blue, Gemini Blue or Marathon Blue)!! I flip flop back and forth between liking these colors. Too bad aubergine and blue don't go well together as accent colors.

Aubergine pic (not my car):

Metallic Copper. Because that's how it came I don't know thats what I would have chosen if I'd had a.choice but I really like it and when it gets the full rustoration it will be metallic copper. But I really like Ricks black GT look, I would take either marathon blue or Adriatic blue. My next choice would be yellow, I already have a Speed yellow Boxster

As far as colors go, I can say that I think almost all of them look good on the 914.

What I find more challenging is coming up with interesting - yet good looking - color combinations. Thanks to whoever built the 914 Configurator, but this is a great tool for trying various combinations. Here's what I'm shooting for on my current build - Nepal Orange over a dark red.

Here's the same basic configuration in different colors: Marathon Blue over Alaska Blue.

although many have said "Any Blue" it seems Olympic Blue - L51P, is left out,

Mine is that color and I doubt if I would pick it if it wasn't the stock color.

I mean it does look like a robins egg or maybe something that would be given at a boys baby shower.

But I am pretty sure I will repaint it that color when the time comes.

I like Olympic Blue. I think it would look really good with body color bumpers instead of black.

I think my original color is either Irish or Zambezi green- someone painted white over my sticker, but looking at the harder to reach places it's definetely a darker green. Mine's a 71... confused24.gif

Posted by: Type 47 Mar 12 2014, 08:57 PM

There were so many great 914 colors. If I had eight 914's they would be in this order: Signal Orange, Summer Yellow, Black, Silver, Saturn Yellow (light green), Olympic Blue, Lime green, Laguna Blue.

No white, no red.

SO was the color of my 1st 914

Posted by: jrrhdmust Mar 14 2014, 12:55 PM

The car came to me as Olympic Blue, painted over by dark red, with silver doors and lots of rust.

I would take it Orange - I love that color, but since this is a budget restoration, it is going to be way hard to change the color of the whole car in all the nooks and crannies. Sooooo I am going Gloss Black....

Posted by: JmuRiz Mar 14 2014, 01:15 PM

I've kind of fallen into green cars.
First car was an A4 in Cactus Green - I love that color!!!
Next was the 914 in Ravenna Green - A perfect 70's color!
Then it was a Mercedes 280C in two tone green with a green interior - Loved the look of that combo too...but on to a new, good, home.
Now I have a 356, it's Black, but I want to repaint it at some point to the stock Bali Blue.

I guess I like color, something different than black, white, silver or beige.

Posted by: mittelmotor Mar 14 2014, 03:36 PM

I think my two favorites are Ravenna Green and Signal Orange, but I like my Saturn Yellow…sort of a tennis ball yellow-green.

Back in the day mine was a burgundy red only because the paint was free. They put an expiration date on paint at work and had a bunch they needed disposed of so what better place to use it than my car.
