914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Simple Daytime Driving Lights

Posted by: Mblizzard Mar 16 2014, 02:44 PM

I have been toying with adding some daytime running lights. I got some 14cm LED driving lights for about $14.

Was going try and mount them inside the fog lights but I am not sure that would work. So I thought I might be able to insert them under the glass lens of the fog light. Just mocked up for now.

Seems to work pretty well. These things are damn bright!

Thoughts?

why not just turn on the fog lights when driving?

That is an option but this would be an always on option that could not be overlooked. Also these are several stiles more visible during the day than the fog lights.

I use my foglight switch to actuate my DRLs; that what I did my '74; I changed out the internals of my foglight with SMD LEDs and because of the wavelength of the SMDs, they are much more visible than incandescent foglights.

Can you give more details on the LEDs and the changes in the turn signal buckets? I think that along with third brake lights, the addition of daytime running lights will help to make us more visible to other drivers.

here is the thread on the turn signal bucket conversion; the lower light is driven off a separate fused circuit which turns whenever the igntion is on

here is my thread on the fog light conversion to DRL; the "DRLs" switch on when the fogs are switched on. If high beams go, on, then they go off as in OEM operation.

here is my thread on third brake light with pulse option

I did you third brake light pulse install!

Really like your driving lights but as mine are the late style I can't go with the cat eye option. I am going to remove the fogs today and see about just replacing the existing bulbs with the LED strip.

depending on the socket of the fog light bulb; you may be able to just find a bulb that will go into the socket. if you have issues trying to mount a strip inside the housing, you may want to consider a change out of the bulbs. i tried sourcing a bulb for the round foglamps, but learned that they are not made. i could have fabricated my own, but that would have meant sacrificing a pair of OEM bulbs.

Well I went with my orginal plan and it seems to be pretty nice.

Bright enough to be noticed but not overpowering.

I find it interesting that folks with older cars want to have DRLs (NOT a bad idea, IMO) and people with factory installed (and maybe even legally mandated) DRLs are looking for ways to disable or eliminate them ...............................

I think some people have no concept of how distracted the world is today. If you want to stay safe you have to be seen. Th 914 is small enough already, add a driver on a cell phone and it can turn bad quickly.

So I will keep my lights on!
