914World.com _ 914World Garage _ RSR style Cookie Cutters?

Posted by: roachghia70 Apr 12 2014, 12:54 AM

Maybe it's not new, but I haven't seen it before.

I love the look of RSR Fuchs. But I can only afford Cookie Cutters right now. So I'm trying to make the best of it, and give the cookie cutters the best chance they will have at looking the part. It's a fun little project. Please let me know what you think.

Please note, these are just rough mock-ups at this stage, just to test the concept. If they look good, I will clean them up and paint them nicely. For now, they were just wiped down with a rag, masked, and sprayed. So please don't fret about poor masking, paint imperfections, or the minor curb rash.

Here's the first one:

Yes, my 4 year old and I were doing arts and crafts together.

I thought the wheel turned out pretty nice! But it wasn't quite what I was looking for. On this one, I painted the entire lip silver. But I understand that RSR wheels had the outside edge polished. So I decided to try that next:

Posted by: roachghia70 Apr 12 2014, 01:04 AM

On the second attempt, I masked the paint break just a bit further down the spoke, so that the silver section wouldn't look so thin. I also left the lip polished, which is hard to tell because these wheels had some nasty faded lips.

I'm pretty happy with where this is going!

This weekend, I am going to strip the silver paint off these two wheels, and polish the lips properly. Then I will mask and paint them properly.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or opinions.

Thanks!

I think both look great. It's hard to tell the polished lip in the pictures, but either way, they look really nice.

How did you prep the wheels?
What color silver?
Is the paint from a rattle can?

I like them too. Best looking cookie cutters I have seen.

silver cookies look great on a 914 and they are still available cheap.

Posted by: PanelBilly Apr 12 2014, 08:12 AM

I like the way they look too. Looks like the star is floating in the center of the wheel

Posted by: Sleepin Apr 12 2014, 08:23 AM

I have seen that done with bronze....pretty sharp. I am a huge cookie cutter fan myself.

Posted by: Madswede Apr 12 2014, 08:54 AM

I like how those are looking! shades.gif Personally, though, I've grown tired of silver and/or chrome, too common these days. Why not paint the star to match body color? idea.gif Good stuff, man!

Posted by: ConeDodger Apr 12 2014, 11:56 PM

I'd like to see them on a car...

Posted by: euro911 Apr 13 2014, 12:58 AM

We've all seen all black, and blacked out centers with polished lips, but I haven't seen this paint combo before. Looks good smile.gif

I like how you did the first wheel, silver painted recesses and lips, but also like the depth on the center on the second wheel.

Can't wait to see how they look on the car popcorn[1].gif

One has plenty of options with paint. I'm currently working on a set of MBZ CLK wheels for my westy camper van (named 'Eileen'). Using Rustoleum "High Performance' wheel paint (just doing all silver though). There were too many lip knicks to warrant the $ to polish them, so I just filed them hand scotch-brighted them before painting.

Update!

I got the 4 wheels painted and done. But I did not polish the outermost lip of the wheels. I tried to do it, but I failed with the tools I had. First, I tried using paint remover to pull off the clearcoat, but the clearcoat was not cooperating. It came off in blotches, and left chunks of clearcoat all over the wheels. So then I resorted to sanding the clearcoat and trying to flatten it all out. It was a ton of work and enormously frustrating, because the clear would gum up the sandpaper constantly.

In the end, I just sanded them the best I could and simply painted the lips. I could have taken them to a polisher, or a sandblaster, or somewhere to dunk the wheels and have them stripped... but I didnt' really want to spend that kind of cash on this little project. For now, I compromised and just painted them. If I get myself a set of Fuchs, I will do it the right way. But this turned out alright, especially for a budget project!!

Here's my process:

1. First I painted the whole wheel silver, so that I could mask it all off and paint the black section on top. This seemed like it would be easier than trying to mask the black part of the spokes and the lip. I then used a piece of tape to mark the line where I wanted the paint break to be. I did this because you can't really see what you are masking when you are placing the tape on the top.

http://s255.photobucket.com/user/LOW145/media/1970%20Porsche%20914%20WRX%20Swap/1.jpg.html

http://s255.photobucket.com/user/LOW145/media/1970%20Porsche%20914%20WRX%20Swap/2.jpg.html

2. Next I placed a piece of tape on the end of the spoke, so that I would have a reference that is parallel to the edge of the spoke.

http://s255.photobucket.com/user/LOW145/media/1970%20Porsche%20914%20WRX%20Swap/3.jpg.html

3. Now I could mask off the spokes. I started nearest the center, and rolled one single piece of tape all the way around. I used the piece of tape from step #2 as a reference, and kept my tape parallel to it. By rolling one piece of tape all the way around the spoke, i kept the paint break clean.

http://s255.photobucket.com/user/LOW145/media/1970%20Porsche%20914%20WRX%20Swap/4.jpg.html

4. Once the spokes were all masked off, I used electrical tape to mask off the lip right at the peak. it took some practice to use several fingers to make the tape curve around the lip without stretching it so much that it wouldn't stick.

http://s255.photobucket.com/user/LOW145/media/1970%20Porsche%20914%20WRX%20Swap/6.jpg.html

5. I then masked off the remainder of the center, and the remainder of the wheel lips:

I wrapped them in 225/50/15 tires, Falken Ziex 912 touring tires. But I could only afford 2 tires so far, so it'll be another week before I have 4 matching wheels. haha

It is a TIIIIGHT fit in the back, especially on the driver's side. But the 225s do fit, and my car is pretty low. I believe that the PO had rolled the fenders a bit, and the fender support bracket in front of the tires down by the rocker has been cut, so that the fenders could be pulled outwards.

The 16" Fuchs on the front of my car don't belong to me. They were just loaner wheels while I got my engine swap finished up. I'm going to return them to DBCooper as soon as I get my two front tires.

I've painted my bumpers the same color as the Cookie Cutters, with Rustoleum Satin Nickel spray paint. The black part of the wheels is Duplicolor Trim Black spray paint. It has maybe just a little bit more shine than I wanted, but I think that will fade down a bit with time. Overall, I am very happy with the wheels.

Do you know what would "finish" off these wheels?

Paint the raised areas on the center caps with black...

like this!

Are those 7" wheels in the rear? You said the tires are 225's. Are they 225x50's?

Posted by: roachghia70 Apr 19 2014, 11:30 PM

Yes, they are 15x7 wheels, and 225/50/15 Falken Ziex 912 tires.

It's my daily driver, and I couldn't be happier with it. Well, actually, I'm dying to get the cable shifter done so that it doesn't shift like a butter churn anymore. haha Other than that, it's been an awesome little daily driver!

Your car and the wheels look great! Are the RSR wheels painted to get the flat silver look or are they bead blasted flat with glass beads? I've always wondered about this and always assumed they were bead blasted. How much did you have to pull the rear fenders to get 225's to fit? Also, did you have to run spacers in the front to get the wheels to keep from rubbing at full lock? If using spacers, what width did you use?

Posted by: rgalla9146 Jun 15 2014, 07:24 PM

Those are not just any cookie cutters.
I think those came on the rear of early 911SCs only.
Anyone ? 15 x 7 or is it 8 " ?
They look beautiful.
THEY are perfect for a Vanagon Westy. But would be a real adaptation.
5 on 130 vs 5 on 112, backspace ? who knows ?

Posted by: JmuRiz Jun 15 2014, 07:42 PM

Cool look, I like the outside of the box design.

Also like the front spoiler you have...where is it from?

Posted by: lonewolfe Jun 15 2014, 07:57 PM

I believe Cookies only came as 15x6 on 911's and later as 15x7 for 944's.

Thanks!!!

I painted these with Rustoleum Satin Nickel paint, out of a rattle can. Lots of prep work first. And they aren't perfect, but the price was right. If I were to do a really nice set, I would try bead blasting and then clear powdercoat, keeping in mind that they dry darker that way.

No spacers at all, and the front doesn't rub ever. But the rear driver's side does.
This thread has some details about fitting 7 inch wheels on a narrow car, including what the PO did to my car:

These are all 15x7. I'm not sure which car they came from, because I got them on Craigslist. I'll look on the backside of them the next time I have the wheels off.

Have you seen that either Empi or a Flat Four make a reproduction Fuchs in 5x112, with the correct backspacing for a Vanagon? That might end up cheaper than buying a set of cookies and a set of adapters.

Thank you!
That spoiler was on the car when I bought it, and I haven't seen any markings on it unfortunately. It looks like an LE front lip to me, or at least similar to that style. Let me know if you'd like me to take any detailed puctures of it.

The PO actually cut the center section out of it, so that the RennMetal tow bar can be accessed without removing the bumper. That section attaches with a couple of small Allen bolts. Pretty clever solution.

Wow, quite a tedious bit of masking there! But it does make all the difference. Just goes to show you that there are a million little details you can work on that make your car look great without having to rip it completely apart or spend a fortune.

Looks like the mag part of the fuchs have been milled away.

Ugh. I thought they looked interesting when I first saw those, but do you notice how the cut out part looks like those old stick-on flowers that wannabe hippies used to stick on their Volkswagens? Once I noticed that it turned into the only thing I can see when I look at them. Ugh.

Those are awesome!! What a clever idea.
But I agree, they're not as good a design as the original wheel. That shape stands out too much, and it does sort of resemble a hippy flower!

That being said, if you twist my arm I would trade them for my Cookie Cutters. haha
