That is a 1.7 muffler. Definitely not 2.0 which is a banana shape. The 1.8 looks much the same with the exit on the end. Will still fit a 1.7L

Here's a diagram that can help you tell the difference:

Depending on what you mean by "the single side holes", it sounds like a 1.7 or 1.8 muffler. The 1.8 mufflers were a sausage shape, much like the 2.0 ones, without the flange sticking out around the body of the muffler. The one in your picture has the flange, so I'm pretty sure it is a 1.7 muffler.

That's a great diagram for the sizing. I'm going to make a copy of that for my records, that's if don't mind...

Not my diagram. I swiped if off Jeff Bowlsby's site. I knew about it because he had posted it here before...

I thought the ends of the heat exchangers had the flange upside down on 1.7 versus the 2.0

Meaning the two bolts are on top for one type and on the bottom for the other type???

Second point.
There are bus mufflers out there that are being passed off as the OEM porsche 914 muffler yet they have the exit on the passenger side and you need the cross over pipe to get it over to the drivers side exit in the valance.

From what I have seen, those don't line up correctly, but it can be made to work.

Have him post a picture of the other side of that muffler to be sure.

another image of same muffler.

I checked the existing, ( soon to be replaced) heat exchangers and their orientation

is as depicted in the diagram provided above. single hole on top...

thanks for the info....

Buy it, those are no longer being made.
Get it coated again so it lasts...

The next replacement will be a bus muffler

Why did Porsche change the exchanger design for the 2.0 cars? I understand the dia is slightly bigger. On the SSi replacement the dia is the same for both designs. Just wondering why they flattened out the rear bends on the 2.0 To make more power?
