914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Replacing rear view mirror glass

Posted by: Qarl Apr 20 2014, 10:39 AM

I have a correct really NOS 914-6 mirror (the smaller skinnier one), obtained from Mittelmotor years ago.

The mirror silvering is a bit discolored on the edges.

Does anyone know of a reputable company that can replace it without damaging the plastic frame?

It's worth saving. AASE has them for about $450 new.

Thanks,

Q

The mirror is this type.

It's smaller in width and height than the later 914 mirrors.

Eric Shea was looking into this a year ago. I don't remember the result. I have 2 early mirrors that need to be redone.

I think I have one like that. I'll look tomorrow and see if it's the same. I've done a late one. Not sure if the "gromett" is the same or not.

Here is the glass. It's yellow/discolored around the edges.

I don't really see a gasket that can be removed. It appears to be assembled and the frame heat sealed in place.

I'm wondering if a mirror place cut new mirror exactly and mount the glass without f-ing up the housing.
