914World.com _ 914World Garage _ windshield installation question

Posted by: dangrouche Apr 24 2014, 12:10 AM

I have read many threads and not seen anywhere Window Weld has been discussed to be used in addition to the butyl bead. I have the 3/8" butyl bead AND the 3M Window weld urethane caulk. All the threads I have read in this forum have not discussed the usage of the 3M Windo Weld. I was at the auto paint store and the counter guys seemed to know what they were talking about. What have you guys used? Butyl bead only or Butyl bead AND the Windo Weld. The tube cost $22, so thats not the issue. Will simply placing the glass on the butyl bead do the job??
I'd like to see what you guys have done. I am in the first stages of installation. I have dry fitted, set up the spacers and tape witness marks.

Butyl and urethane is redundant. Urethane. Period!

IMHO opinion you can use either. The butyl has a consistent thickness and straighter edge. If you use the urethane you will need to put a consistent thickness all the way around and probably need some spacers as to not squish it flat. The Urethane needs 24 hrs to cure.

When using the butyl you position and pull the backing as you go which for most of the time works. But it's really sticky and if you slip and put it on askew it wont come off easy. Don't pull more backing off than you really need to work with. The Butyl will have a small seam which if I recall goes on the bottom. Think it would be best to install the windshield, then sit it in the sun and press it all around again.

Chrome trim will hide most of the irregularities. The rubber trim isn't as wide so you will need to paint the edges of the windshield.

Many threads on the subject.
Here is one- http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=74816&st=20

Have fun.

Urethane was designed as a structural adhesive for unitized construction where the glass is actually part of the vehicles integrity.

914's do not reply on the windshield frame as part of the structure. Infact if you use urethane and get a crack in your windshield good luck removing your trim without ruining it.

Do it old school. Windshield primer, Butyl tape new plastic clips and trim.

I have used Butyl Tape on all my installations except for a couple of cars where I used the rubber trim.

The Butyl tape allows me to lay down the strip without excess that will bind the bright trim also. This allows me to remove the trim without screwing it up.

And it's less messy than a tube of shit that is usually applied in excess.
