I got an original VW windshield to replace the broken one on my 1974 914. Just talked to the windshield installation guy and he said I'd have to get the gasket for it...
So what exactly do I need to order so that they can install my new (old) windshield? I plan to get the rubber strip from 914Rubber that replaces the chrome trim. Anything else?
butyl gasket.
Pelican has them, as do ALL decent glass shops.
Do yourself a favor.
I believe there may be a classic thread on this.
Remove the windshield, paint underneath.
Then I believe painting the back side of the windshield, just at the edge helps to hide the rubber, paint etc that you may see with the new rubber gasket instead of the chrome trim.
Check the classic threads...

Rich
I found a blog detailing a windshield replacement using just the rubber from 914Rubber (that's how I first found out about them), and urethane adhesive.

Looks like it would work for me.
Yes, the guy from the blog did that too. I'll be sure to do it.
