can't help you with the fix, but you should get zone labs alarm when you finally get it sorted out. (about 16 mos ago I got some viruses and ended up wiping my pc and reformating) I haven't had any problems on any computer I have run Zone Labs Alarm on.

I forgot: with the zone labs stuff you can deny stuff from accessing the internet, and it also blocks anythng that would otherwise auto download. Nothing seems to get by it.

(I don't have the professional version, but my dad has it at work, and if you get it you can get hackers ip addresses, email addresses, and even their Street addresses and phone numbers. Some guys I know have had fun with this. Note: I'm pretty sure zonelabs is the stuff you can track people with, it could be another program though. I do know that it works great though)

I had one last year that constantly popped up " about blank" and would keep popping up new windows. Afetr trying about 6 different scaners, I was told to try ANTI VIR and it worked the first time. Only problem is when it is on your time really slows down. Oh yeah it made by a GERMAN company!!! Imagine that.

STOP USING THAT POS WEB-BROWSER FROM MICROSOFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, or anything else non-InternetExlporer.

hahahha not funny IPB Image IPB Image

anyway... could this have anything to do with being hooked up to a huge LAN without a firewall?

Yes.

Take Andy's advice. Reformat your hard drive and install a Linux distro. Try Fedora. It has Firefox and Open Office in the distribution. For IM, download GAIM. What else does a college student need?

XP SP 2 has firewall protection in it you may just have to set it up. Also Norton Internet security has a firewall with it.

Now look into all the cool extensions you can add.

Tools-->Extensions--->GetMoreExtensions (takes you to a mozilla website where you can lookup and install extensions you like on-the-fly)

I use:
CopyPlainText (copy from text from webpages and paste without funky html formatting)
Nuke Anything (click away banner ads and anoying objects you don't want to see or print)
Paste and Go (copy a URL, then in the go-bar you can "paste and go" to load in a single click)
ieView (Some websites SUCK and don't follow HTML rules. Lets you open a page in IE if needed)
Gmail Notifier (let's you know if your gmail account has new mail - open it with a click)
Allow Right Click (let's you "save image as" even when the webpage tries to block you)
Single Window (helps with tabbed browsing. Events opening a new window open a new tab instead)
Dictionary Search (right click on any text to look up a definition)

For clarification.....is it just the Russian ones we should be watching out for...? IPB Image IPB Image

There's no way I would connect to a broadband network without at least a software firewall. I always suggest a hardware firewall if its for a person's primary connection (like at home or in a dorm)

My brother was on his school's network without either and brought his computer to me complaining that it was too slow. Adaware found more than 800 bad things on it. Spybot found 80 other items Adaware didn't find. Plus Norton said there were two trojans. It took me forever to clean that computer up. (He didn't want to wipe it due to it having a lot of school projects (commercial design/graphic arts) on it.)

I got him a $30 linksys router on sale and he's had ZERO problems since. Software firewalls work well too, but they do take system resources. You probably won't even notice though.
