914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Need Help with a Name

Posted by: seanery May 30 2003, 10:35 AM

I'm looking for help in designing some Porsche related media- Web Page, newsletter, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The name needs to represent Porsche and jump out as easily recognized as Porsche to you and other Porschephiles.
However, it can't use the name Porsche or anything that PCNA or father Porsche in Germany and their lawyers wouldn't allow.

The name shouldn't exclude any models or be specific to any particular model. What we are looking for is something that ALL Porsche people can enjoy.

I have a free set of front Euro lenses and a 914Club poster (13x19) to the winner, if there is one...if not, I'll throw all the names of those who responded in a hat and draw a winner. BUT, you have to have your location listed in your profile to WIN.

Thanks in advance.

Hard to do this without focusing on a particular model. They all differ so much. Engines in the front, rear, AND in the middle. Affordable to astronomical. Oh well, someone will come up with something

Nice try.

The name Carrera would stick us in a 911 only hole.

Has to cover Porsches in general.

naaaa, at least in europe, Carrera stands for fast/racing/porsche etc.
it's not in general associated just with the 911.

maybe that's different here, but in germany, when i would say
"Carrera Central" people would think of fast Porsche Cars instead of a '86 911 ...

Andy

Posted by: seanery May 30 2003, 11:51 AM

Andy's right about Carrera.
I thought about it.

It means "race" I think.

356 Carrera's were the bad-assest of the day. There was a Carrera 6 (not a 356) and then the 911 took over the name.
I think there was even a 924 based Carrera.

Ausgezeihtnet (I think it is the spelling).

German translation is "of note" or "excellent."

Andy

Actually, check out this page. It even has legal correspondence from Porsche's legal eagles.

http://http://www.internet-law-library.com/pdf/CybersquattingArticle.PDF

You can use the words Porsche and Carrera as long as it has nothing at all to do with Porsche autos. (ie. jewelry is sufficiently separated from Porsche autos so as to cause no confusion)

And, as is always the case, the law favors those with the most money and or lawyers. They have legal precedent already set that any use of any of their trademarks in a similar field (autos or racing for example) is prohibited.

So according to the law (according to the explanation on the page linked to above), they do in fact own the name itself as long as it is used in the field in which they have trademarked it.

Scary, isn't it?

Posted by: Lawrence914-6 May 30 2003, 01:35 PM

EASY solution.

The spanish word for race is "La Carerra". So use that.

Be sure to use Babel to translate some of your site into spanish.

Come cut off my arm, you German shysters!

hmm, not bad ...
just a few things:

DasPitstop,
das is the neutrual "article", Pitstop is male, so, it would be
"Der Pitstop" or "Das Auto" or "Der Porsche 911/914"

RennWaggen,
(der) "Rennwagen" just means Race-Car.

DeusheWerks, EuroWerks,
there is not such thing as "Werks", the right spelling would be (das) "Werk" (which simply means Factory). Soooo, (das) "Euro-Werk" would work ...
on a unrelated side-note, the correct spelling for "Rennlist" is (die) "Renn-Liste" with an e at the end.

DeusheExcellence,
how many americans actually know that germans don't call germany "Germany" ????
only english speaking people call Germany Germany. German People call Germany "Deutschland" and themselfs "Deutsche" and they speak "Deutsch".
"Deutsche Excellence" sounds good ... wink.gif

Autoforus,
what does "forus" mean? i could not find a translation for that. do you mean forum?
that would be the same in german,
(das) "Auto Forum" or plural (die) "Auto Foren" ...

later,
Andy

OK Brad,

Several pages back on this thread you said you liked the name 'Stuttgart Garage'.
If you want to make it a little more personal -

"Motor in the middle" best describes what we are all about. I like it. mueba.gif

Ok, so Ausgezeichnet is out.

How about schnell (or is it shnell) I believe its meaning is quick, fast or hurry.

A whois lookup finds that it is not in use, but owned.

- Joe

.ps of course, quick doesn't really describe my 914 1.7, but that's ok wink.gif
