I bought a used transaxle that I am hoping shifts better than the one I have.
If it doesn't then at least I have a core to rebuild while the car is still on the road.

Can I just lower the rear of the trans a bit and swap out the gear stack or am I looking at taking the entire transaxle out?

the tranny case can stay in place and you can remove the gear stack. drain the tranny, remove the gear stack; here are the instructions from Pelican Parts.

Can and should are two different things. .
the ring and pinion gears are a mated set. .
At the least, you'd need to re-set the pinion depth [gaskets are shims] and that
requires mandrels and dial indicators. .

You can not just swap the stacks. The pinion shaft and ring gear are a mated set and must not be interchanged. Your best bet would be to rebuild the core and swap it in whole. Then you can sell or rebuild the one in the car now and keep as a backup.

Rebuilding a tranny is pretty simple. Get the good DR's video it is excellent.

I also have the syncro removal tool, lineup jig and giant snap ring pliers if you need to borrow them, plus some spares from the 4 I pulled apart to make 2 good ones.

I also have a cut open transmission case that works very well for setting the shift rods...better than the jig.....

I also have air tools, space and the shop...(with spare parts trannies) if you want to do it....

Pull your stack, bring that and the new tranny.....we can make one that works well..

I will also leave you alone if you just need space to do it....no problem.

I'll let you know when I have a window to do it in.
Rich I like the idea of pulling the stack and making one good one.
I have the Dr.'s DVD's I just haven't gotten around to watching them.
